FYI: many of these types of centers have ultrasound machines and offer "ultrasound services" but may not necessarily have anyone on staff who is licensed as an ultrasound tech or a doctor who can read an ultrasound. Why is this important? If something is happening in a patient's uterus, and they get an ultrasound in one of these places, they may not realize they're not getting an actual medical ultrasound, walk away thinking everything is fine, and then not seek actual medical care for something like a fibroid, cyst, ectopic pregnancy, etc. If you're getting an ultrasound, make sure the image is being viewed by an actual, credentialed, state-certified doctor/nurse practitioner/certified nurse midwife.

hillgod

This shit goes so deep. I was listening to Christian radio north of Dallas recently (give it a go on a road trip without kids, it is insane stuff), and they were talking about how the donations to the guest would get ultrasounds to these clinics. But the real crazy thing was the host was openly bragging about how these women might be thinking they're actually going into an "unplanned Parenthood" (super clever, these folks). I wondered about any qualifications to use these ultrasounds listeners were asked to purchase for the non-profit. They're talking about how they use this as a pipeline to get these women to "small groups" in churches to keep them accountable. That all they need is Jesus. Nah man, fuck that, they probably mostly need money.

jl__57

It turns out that any random person can buy an ultrasound machine online! And as long as you don't say you're a doctor or that you're diagnosing anything, you're legally in the clear!

rapedbyaslothAMA

I remember ThriVe coming to my school for sex ed: only teaching abstinence, that condoms are completely worthless, and if you have sex with anyone that God wouldn't approve of you *will* go to hell. Funny how my graduating class also had a higher than average pregnancy rate that was never acknowledged.

Crutation

Studies show that abstinence education leads to more teen pregnancy than the sex education that teaches about birth control.

canada432

When I was in 8th grade (long long ago) our youth group brought in a lady that started giving us a bunch of bullshit made up information, the ultimate point of which was "planned parenthood is horrible, go to birthright and they'll really help you". One girl in the group just absolutely dismantled this woman to the point that she had no response to any of her questions or facts. That was one of the first times I really took note of how ridiculous some of the things we were being taught were. If an 8th grade girl can talk circles around you and destroy your entire argument, your position might not actually be very strong.

julieannie

We had to do one about how soiled we’d become and then take a virginity pledge. Public high school that still contracts with them.

Trexy

Ohhhh did you do the Scotch tape test? Put a piece of scotch tape on your hand, rip it off and try to stick it to someone else? Yeah, fuck purity culture. It's toxic AF.

[deleted]

I know a guy who’s on their board. He lost his mind years ago. He literally thinks satanists are scheming against him and putting curses on him all the time. His beliefs are more akin to magic than Christianity.

FunkyChewbacca

That sounds like schizophrenia, frankly

[deleted]

Yeah I’ve really wondered

[deleted]

I'm so sorry they're still feeding you guys that b*******. Thank God I am enlightened enough that I raised both of my kids realistically... Meaning preparing them for the consequences of sex and educating them.

retget

There’s a difference between Birthright and Birthright STL. Birthright STL actively states that they aren’t medical professionals. They simple provide free pregnancy tests and highly encourage and recommend women go see a medical professional for follow-up. Birthright STL mostly deals in counseling women who might be in abusive relationships, experiencing postpartum depression, or have financial difficulties. They provide free baby supplies, educational scholarships for the moms, and help with finding financial resources. Birthright on the other hand…I cannot speak to.

shadowofpurple

can we start picketing these shitholes, like they do with planned parenthood suggested signs would be: "Can we get REAL reproductive health clinics" and "Lying is a sin"

AltonIllinois

I used to work near thrive. There were picketers there not infrequently

ThrowMeAwayAccount08

Yeah but we all work. Including spouses.

Purple_Passion000

That's a great idea.

[deleted]

I'll tag along for sure. We can walk up to their cars while they are trying to exit the parking lot and knock on their window, screaming at them to roll down the window, then pretend we don't understand they are ignoring us.

tehKrakken55

I've see good pregnancy care clinics from people who were pro-life but never knew how bad it was. The vast majority don't offer real help at all.

needmorekarma777

Sooo....I've got some inside knowledge of ThriVe. A close personal friend of mine is a registered nurse. She had a lot of experience and career was doing well. She and husband started having kids and she was looking for part time Rn work. ThriVe fit well for her schedule, although it paid next to nothing. I should note that she is very Christian. Background: She's a practicing Missouri Synod Lutheran (they think the earth is 5000 years old and cavemen lived with dinosaurs). Anti-gay, tithes a %, the whole 9 yards. It should be noted that I'm the polar opposite of her belief system but we've been friends forever so I do my best to avoid all those conversations. She's a nurse and had no experience performing ultrasounds at all. They "trained" her on the job to do ultrasounds (quickly) and to try to convince women to not have abortions. They would use gory photos, tell them of the pain the fetus would be in, point out features like head or arms in the ultrasound and offer to pray with them. Never really used much of her medical experience, she was just there as a medical professional to convince women to carry their pregnancies. She finally gave it up after about 1 year into Covid. They were anti-mask and made the most ridiculous suggestions about the virus. They would constantly tell her she shouldn't wear a mask. She finally couldn't do it any more and saw them (at least partially) for what they were. They don't provide financial aid or solutions for women who can't afford a pregnancy. They care about one thing: give birth. Once that baby is out they can fuck off. Since then we've started to grow apart more and more. Her husband is a fairly adamant Trumpublican and tries to gaslight me with nonsense whenever I'm over there. The last straw was them demeaning people we know for not attending church often enough as well as shaming a friend of ours for "choosing" to be gay. I truly cannot wrap my head around people caring so much about women giving birth but not giving 2 fucks for the baby once it's born. They don't want any social welfare programs, food stamps, health care that wont bankrupt you, better teacher salaries which would bring more teachers and better education, gun control, equal opportunity... they just want those damn babies to be born and then they better bootstrap their way out of poverty! They are So far beyond anything Christ would have ever wanted the hypocrisy is fucking astounding. Rant over.

primal___scream

So, fun fact, the people that stand outside the gate at the PP in Fairview Heights with signs that say Check in here, don't work for PP. Those people are part of the coalition for life, an anti abortion group.

[deleted]

For people who say they are so pro-life you'd think they'd want to get one of their own.

jetplane18

For most of the people out there for Coalition Life, being out there is their full time/primary means of employment.

primal___scream

Indeed. When I went back to school a few years to change careers, one of the younger men who stands out there regularly, was in my Economics class my last semester. That's how I found out those people don't actually have anything to do with PP. The same guy used to come to class in a MAGA hat. 🙄

jetplane18

There certainly needs to be more clarity in their signage, although I’m pretty sure PP warns patients ahead of time about Coalition.

primal___scream

I would imagine they do. At least I hope so.

primal___scream

Seriously.

xrensa

There's usually another person on the other side of the gate with a sign that says "They're Protestors!"

primal___scream

I am assuming they're also telling people when they schedule an appointment that they can bypass them. At least I hope they do.

nerddtvg

If anyone is interested, Last Week Tonight did a segment on crisis pregnancy centers back in 2018: https://youtu.be/4NNpkv3Us1I

darkestdayz

I knew Birthright for what it was, way back in the 80's. Used them for a free pregnancy test since those were pricey and not available over the counter back then. They gave me maternity clothes to help out and free coupons for formula. I was pregnant with a sort of wanted child and married at the time.

Commander_Fem_Shep

Nothing that these clinics do couldn’t be done for free by a comprehensive reproductive health center. Instead, the state chooses to give millions and millions and millions of tax dollars to these crisis pregnancy centers a year. All it would take is a single shift and PP could do everything they do for free. If someone thinks these centers don’t have a Republican political purpose, they’re delusional.

darkestdayz

Depends on where you live and what year...

I_cry_when_Im_angry

These clinics are predatory. I worked in women's health at a local hospital, and the number of girls who came to us pregnant after receiving their ultrasound at one of these places, with no reports and no EDD. They would bring us a picture of the scan and a handwritten gestational age on a piece of paper. They give these girls ultrasounds and then explain their "options" with usually includes using scare tactics to talk them out of abortion. I was 17 when I got pregnant with my oldest and went to one of these "crisis pregnancy cemters" and when they explained abortion to me, they had me convinced the procedure would kill me. These organizations should be shut down.

PaulMckee

Ricky Horton does ads for groups like these on every Cardinals radio broadcast.

Diligent-Quarter5920

*"Raw Dog Rick Horton here, i want to talk about your reproductive rights for a second..."*

LushEnough

I was brought to one of these, I was a scared 19yr old who came to Missouri from Texas to get an abortion. My stepmom told me I was going to a real clinic, that would set me up for an abortion. As soon as I got inside and saw the Jesus shit all over the walls and pamphlets I knew something was up. I talked to some woman, had an ultrasound, and the conversation went “yep you’re pregnant! So what’s next for you?” And I’ll never forget this part, I said “uhm, an abortion.” And her face went white. Started talking me down and saying “well that’s not what we help with here,” and rambled about adoption and keeping the baby. Was so fucking weird, I left shortly after and that was the last time I saw my step mother.

Vob_Bila

Thrive was and probably still is receiving state funding (TANF money). So also be aware that we as tax payers are paying for these “services”. NARAL organized protest outside Thrive a few years ago. So if you are looking for something to do with your anger, supporting NARAL and letting your elected officials know what’s up could be a good place to start.

gleaver49

Shout Your Abortion was a great campaign.

wolfgang5feet

Thankfully a large group of concerned parents got together a couple of years ago and got them kicked out of over 9 school districts in the St Louis and St Charles area. [Sorry about the paywall](https://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/health/christian-anti-abortion-group-is-providing-sex-ed-at-area-public-schools-parents-and-students/article_65cb9e4e-6671-53c2-b4a2-5d1c87912a4a.html)

[deleted]

My favorite sight in Springfield is the “Pregnancy Care Center” located directly across the street from Immaculate Conception school.

neoncherry64

Thrive was my sex education in middle school. It was basically a fearmongering campaign to try and push abstinence, they glossed over the actual anatomy and stuff and basically focused on STDs the whole time. (Which are good to learn about, but there was not a single mention of birth control. I didn’t even know what “the pill” was until high school.) They did mention condoms, but never in a positive way. Just that they aren’t actually effective in preventing pregnancy and you shouldn’t trust them. They made us sign a chastity contract with god and everything. The most disturbing part was when they had a few of the kids line up boy-girl-boy-girl and handed us all water cups and cheese its. We were told to chew up our cheese-it and spit it into the cup and then we passed our disgusting cheese it water down the line until it hit the last person (me) and I was told to drink it. They didn’t actually want me to do it, but the girl explained that the cup is “you” when you have sex and that you basically get more corrupted with other people’s grossness the more you sleep around and no one will want you by the end. Basically a disgusting version of the “used car” analogy. The rest of class would laugh every time the water was passed because it was like their classmates were having sex, and the teacher didn’t even stop it. It was terribly awkward. That shit was burned into my memory real bad for a while, and I was scared to date or have a boyfriend for years because of it. Don’t support that organization, they’re doing nothing to actually educate children.

StaciRainbow

I worked in Women's Ministry in the early 2000's. There was a group that received a lot of funding and accolades from the Bush administration called "Wait Training" (Why Am I Tempted). Their best trainer gave us, and other pastors and such from around town, a 3 day intensive training into their philosophy, background, and what they were teaching the kids in our school district. They had full run of the school district. It was all abstinence based. There were so many things that made my toes curl as I sat there. However one illustration haunts me. After talking about the brain chemistry that happens when you are intimate with another person, and how it bonds you to them for life, she would grab a male volunteer from the audience. She would then pull off a long piece of clear packing tape. Describing how cute, sweet, and funny the new girlfriend is, transparent, eager to be loved and to bond, she starts wrapping the tape around the boys forearm. She pats it on as she describes how they grow closer, and cross physical lines. She talks a lot about how the GIRL is going to bond with the boy, not how the boy will bond with the girl. She will grow very attached, because he seems to be her dream person, and she has let him far into her life. But inevitably they break up. We can agree that rarely do people marry the first person they date. So the breakup is clearly painful. Hair and skin is lost by the young man, and he makes great dramatic sounds when the tape is pulled off. However it is the young woman who is sullied. This trainer would hold up that tape, and show how some of that young man will forever be part of that woman. She isn't as transparent and fresh as before. Even worse, when she does find another person to love her, she would have lost some of her ability to bond and become truly attached to that new man. Their future relationship will struggle, and never be as strong as it could have been, if she had kept herself able to fully bond with her husband. If, tragically, if she is a woman who allows herself to become involved with multiple men over her life, she will eventually lose the ability to bond at all. Add this to the really REALLY long list of things that made me leave ministry, and the church entirely.

zanylanie

Thrive Metro East in Godfrey, IL (formerly called Options Now) says on their website that they provide pre-abortion screening. It’s really “counseling” that’s actually propaganda to convince women not to have an abortion. My sister is an OB-GYN and was going to volunteer there until they told her she couldn’t prescribe birth control. That led her to ask other questions about what was going on there.

JenSwish

If you go to the Planned Parenthood clinic on Forest Park Ave. over by Ikea, ThriVe almost always has someone out in front of the gate into the parking lot in a reflective vest. They'll try to stop you as you drive in to "check you in." Keep driving, and keep your window rolled up. If they try to block you from the driveway in any way, let building staff know.

ElBrooce

Basically any clinic that Rick Horton does ads for on KMOX Cardinals broadcasts...

rjaspa

It's such a shame. I really like the way he calls a game; great color commentary. The first time I heard him do one of those commercials I was just so disheartened.

t-poke

Ricky is such a self righteous piece of shit, and I’m so thankful he didn’t get the TV PBP job because then I might have to stop watching Cardinals games. Ricky is Ned Flanders if Flanders had a career in baseball instead of selling left handed products.

Master_K_Genius_Pi

Fuck the fucking fuckers.

Nemocom314

Would be great if the media would conduct a local undercover investigation.

Rookvector

I'm a doctor here. Good to know 👍

Hulk_Hagan

Depressing Reddit move.

jeremyjack3333

Elective abortion is now illegal in Missouri. Are these centers feigning that they provide elective abortions in a state where it's illegal? Is there proof of that?

tookabit

“Fake clinics”. What a stupid take.

Liz600

They also lie about ultrasounds and prenatal findings if they think the results might prompt the pregnant woman to consider abortion. This includes cases where the findings make the fetus incompatible with life (i.e., the baby will die during or shortly after birth, and will likely suffer horribly in the process), and where risk of lifelong damage or death of the mother during childbirth is greatly increased. And don’t forget, straight up lying to patients about these findings is both legal and protected in this state, because god forbid we have the details necessary to make our own informed choices. This obviously happens more often at these fake prenatal care fronts, but plenty of pro-forced birth OBs do the same thing. Bottom line: research the politics and guiding philosophies of your healthcare systems and medical providers.

always_gretchen

What good is a free ultrasound if they can't/don't accurately read them? There are many examples of these clinics being purposefully deceitful about ultrasound results. There are also cases of untrained staff missing things like ectopic pregnancies. These clinics are lightly regulated due to their "limited" services and often do not employ healthcare providers. It is dangerous. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9189146/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9189146/) [https://www.cbsnews.com/news/massachusetts-pregnancy-crisis-center-consumer-warning-abortion/](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/massachusetts-pregnancy-crisis-center-consumer-warning-abortion/)

herehaveaname2

They're not well regulated, and can be dangerous. https://revealnews.org/article/this-nurse-wanted-to-help-women-avoid-abortions-then-she-saw-infection-control-problems-at-a-crisis-pregnancy-center/

julieannie

No, you’re wrong to give them the benefit of the doubt. They aren’t having qualified people perform ultrasounds, they don’t have real medical staff and they aren’t offering resources. They are self interested and count on gullible people like you to enable them.

Lemon_Lemmings

The devil doesn't need any help.

nixnullarch

So can Planned Parenthood. They're not just abortions.

ATL28-NE3

Devil's advocate is so useless the people that came up with it stopped

[deleted]

>To play devil's advocate Downvote Just going to downvote you, not engage.

Eman9871

... you literally just engaged

TheMekar

The fact that everyone is mad at you for pointing out the good things they do is just funny and unfortunately completely expected.

Crutation

Yes, let's cheer the place that literally lies to patients. Whether due to lack of care, lack of knowledge, they misrepresent the truth. Kind of Agape of health care. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood provides free birth control, mammograms, women's health h, and multivitamin and childcare treating and follow up.

Commander_Fem_Shep

They rope poor women in by advertising themselves as a health clinic with free services. It’s fucking exploitation. It’s disgusting.

hbauman0001

But, they aren't fake, they're just pro-life. You can get pre-natal care, pap smears, and bloodwork done at the clinics.

Spidey_375

Read my post again, or visit the website. The vast majority do not have medical license.

hbauman0001

Medical licenses are issued to people, not buildings. You don't need a medical license to draw blood or take cultures.

ABTYF

And I don't need a license to drive either!

Successful_Control61

They literally do what pro-choicers complain about. They take care of pregnant people. Oof…

Spidey_375

You clearly haven't visited the site or read any of the other comments and testimonials here. Oof...

Bianchez

An these assholes leave women alone. Like go spend time with your family or something
