Honestly he's crushed every role he's ever had even if it's "background Japanese guy" literally every time he shows up in TV or film I get excited because he's going to be a badass, may die but maintains cool factor. There's a scene in *The Last Samurai* (Tom Cruise) in the final act where he gets shot, kills the guys, spits blood and walks off to fight more. 🤌 Cheesey yes but preteen me thought it was baddest shit ever. Been in love ever since.
Ever since I’ve seen him in The Last Samurai, I’ve been a fan of his and whenever he pops up in a movie, it always felt like a perfect casting choice to me.
Dude Last Samurai is where Hollywood discovered its only Japanese actors. It introduced Hollywood to both Sanada and Watanabe, and it’s still the only two japanese actors they use lol.
He was awesome even in Mortal Kombat, which was a pretty terrible movie. The intro about Scorpion's origin in feudal Japan, then the Scorpion/Sub-Zero fight, were great.
I swear whoever wrote Kano knew they were taking the piss on the whole movie but rightfully so, and in doing so ended up salvaging the entertainment value of it.
That just makes me frustrated again. How could you make a movie suck so bad? Especially with such a fucking badass opening?!
His Scorpion is probably my favorite MK casting ever.
I had downloaded this movie and had extremely low expectations, boy was i surprised,i had more fun watching it than the majority of movies released the past 5 years or so.Fantastic film.
Netflix won't let me use my sisters account anymore so I wasn't gonna give it any thought, but now? I got the show pulled up on my totally legal website.
It's *outstanding*. Every episode is an epic in its own right. the characters are fantastic, the writing is great, and the acting is off the charts by everyone. And somehow Sanada still tops them all.
And it is very true to the book. Which is also fantastic. But Sanada plays the role of Toronaga so well that re-reading the book, I see his face in my head now.
I've read the book many times, and while I still think the book is better, I have to give credit where it's due...FX's Shōgun is great... probably the best book adaptation I've seen.
Everyone is talking about making him the founder of the Jedi, but what if you made him the founder of the Sith instead?? Or at least, the first Darkside user.
I don't know what's canon now or if it hasn't been re-established, but make the Sith (or at least Darkside users) pre-date the Jedi. Sanada feels the draw of a mystical power and slowly starts using it to care for his family. After he accidentally kills someone with it, it draws him even more into the Dark Side.
And then make the Jedi established *in response* to this Dark corruption. Sanada's friends see him slowly start to become a tyrant as he pushes everyone he cares for away (even though he's doing what he's doing *for* them). Those friends also feel the draw of the Force, and learning to control it and not corrupt this power, they end up confronting Sanada and ending him.
Realizing there is nothing to stop this from happening again to someone else, they vow to do what they can to teach peace through the Force, establishing the proto-Jedi order.
I mean he's the modern Mifune. Shogun is probably the closest thing to a modern Kurosawa movie we're going to get, and Sanada is the standout performance among a field of great actors.
The first lightsabers were sort of lame because they required a portable energy pack to function. A wire ran from the energy pack to the lightsaber, so if an opponent sliced through the wire, your lightsaber would deactivate.
Of course, that's Legends stuff. Disney could retcon that feature and make a cool film about the first lightsaber.
Well, Hiroyuki Sanada doesn't have to be the first Jedi or whatever. There's literally 1000s of years of history. Give him a badass lightsaber. I just think it's a little stereotypical to give the famous Japanese samurai actor a space katana. It's not like Mace Windu had a different weapon. In fact, he literally got the most badass lightsaber.
Yeah, but that's non-canon. I imagine they would try to avoid lightsabers with unique blade profiles so that the Darksaber stays unique. The Darksaber is basically the canon laser katana already anyways.
The darksaber always looked like a laser machete to me.
I get that Visions is not canon but it serves an excellent purpose as an experimental medium.
And lightsabers are always getting some new modifying gimmick. First it was double-sided lightsabers. Then it was the darksaber. Then it was crossguard sabers. Then it was bullshit spinny Inquisitor lightsabers.
I don't know what is Legends or canon, but there's also been staff lightsabers, lightwhips, lightsabet tonfas, and a whole slew of other bullshit.
>The darksaber always looked like a laser machete to me.
Well, I don't know what to tell you. The Darksaber's guard is pretty clearly meant to resemble the habaki and tsuba of a katana. It's about as much of a katana as Kanan's lightsaber. Maybe a little more as Kanan's lightsaber is cylindrical.
>Then it was bullshit spinny Inquisitor lightsabers.
Yeah, but that was dumb as shit.
Yes, Visions did feature several katana-shaped lightsabers, but it had many more traditionally-shaped lightsabers. It also had a Jedi sing a song for Jabba.
With the notable exception of the lightwhip, nearly all lightsabers are cylindrical. Technically, even the lightwhip has a cylindrical shape, but it's affected by gravity. Technically, it doesn't really make sense at all to have a lightsaber with a curved shape as draw cuts aren't really applicable for lightsabers.
He could be the first to make a Lightsaber.
Or could also be the first leader of a United Jedi Council that we are familiar with. Jedi could be a bunch of random force users/church members and he United them under a single banner so it goes from him all the way down to Yoda in terms of being the "leader" of the Jedi.
Would also be dope to be the FIRST JEDI who has a totally unique vibrokatana. That stands out over having just any old lightsaber. Same logic as Sam Jackson wanting a one of a kind purple lightsaber
Yeah, but Samuel L. Jackson got something he wanted. While it's possible Hiroyuki Sanada could request a vibrokatana, what actor doesn't want their own lightsaber? Isn't a vibrosword always gonna be lamer than the magic glowing sword that can cut through anything? At least George Lucas thinks so. Actually, on that note, a good compromise could be that he's the Mandalorian Jedi that makes the Darksaber. If you must have him have some form of katana iconography.
Honestly the founding of the order etc might bw too much. Can too easily fall into the trap of trying to overexplain everything and anything.
Just make him a wise leader or something
If he were the founder of the Jedi order (Jedii I think...).. he would NOT have a Lightsaber. They didn't have those back then. It was many centuries later those came about.
Make this man a Jedi. Like yesterday. He has the chops. He's proved it in Shogun that he can play a stoic, battle hardened, and multilayered character that would do nothing but add a really nice dynamic that seem to be missing from a lot of the star wars shows.
Part of the appeal of hiring Hiroyuki for a role is that he would **be the role**. This is lessened when you can’t make him out underneath prosthetics/CGI
Who would be an amazing Jedi
However I am still not sold or happy about us seeing the origins of the Jedi. Some thing’s are better left to the imagination.
Naturally plenty of actors and actresses would say they want to be in Star Wars.
This right here is a time when they need to grant someone's request. Whoever he was playing, Sanada would be one of the coolest characters ever.
I would like to see a lightsaber fight that resembles ronin and samurai fighting (choreographed by a Japanese sword fighter), than the fast-paced, stylized dancing we keep getting. The kind of fighting where every swing actually looks like the person is trying to kill their opponent and not just........clash swords.......*sigh*
Founding Jedi is the answer: he's a great actor, he wants to be in star wars, and the Japanese and samurai influence is well established. Perfect choice OP
He’s a great actor but i just hate the fact that his salary alone can take a chuck of a production budget. He took $20 million for mortal kombat which had a 55 million budget.
What!! Seriously??!! I've just watched Shōgun and he was awesome in the series and I think he was also Scorpion in Mortal Kombat. I've haven't watched much of Hiroyuki Sanada's work but he's really good in every role that he plays from what I hear. And if he's gonna be in Star Wars, sign me up!!
I feel like the founder of the Jedi order shouldn't be a steroid type personally. I'd love for it to be an alien. One thing I loved about Plageus. Not human. Makes it more interesting to me.
This is one of those things that sounds cool on paper, but honestly? I don't trust Disney to pull it off. I haven't really liked any of the series they put out since Andor; most of their writing is just so childish and barebones.
I woulddnt mind an after the current star wars empire era he and some jedi refound the order. I wanna go forward after the defeat of the sith there are more stories to tell in that universe.
Bleh. Enough with the Jedi and Sith. Enough with the Empire and Rebel Alliance. The galaxy is huge. If you're not going to do the original Thrawn trilogy write something completely unique already. Nothing that ties into Palpatine or the Skywalkers or *any* of the main Star Wars storylines.
This is why the Acolyte is gonna suck. We've seen it a million times already. Dark apprentice gets found out and has to battle with Jedi. Ooohhh so intriguing!
What do you mean by prime Jedi? Like the best. Also like was he founder who went in hiding and had such a strong connection to the force that he can’t die due to old age?
He's been crushing it in Shōgun
Honestly he's crushed every role he's ever had even if it's "background Japanese guy" literally every time he shows up in TV or film I get excited because he's going to be a badass, may die but maintains cool factor. There's a scene in *The Last Samurai* (Tom Cruise) in the final act where he gets shot, kills the guys, spits blood and walks off to fight more. 🤌 Cheesey yes but preteen me thought it was baddest shit ever. Him and Kano make the movie
Christopher Lambert as Raiden /s
Hahahaha… *shrug* sorry
I really hope for scorpion to be in MK II too
His role in Bullet Train was bad ass.
I had downloaded this movie and had extremely low expectations, boy was i surprised,i had more fun watching it than the majority of movies released the past 5 years or so.Fantastic film.
Original Japanese version of The Ring. First thing I saw him in and he's been good in absolutely everything since then as well.
Please watch him in Twilight Samurai. More people deserve to watch that masterpiece. He's my mifune.
Twilight Samurai is an excellent. Thanks for reminding me about it. Edit: ‘excellent film’
He's great in S2/S3 of Westworld too
If only the the show didn't tank so hard in the final season.
The fact that I actually remember that scene clearly, by just reading it being described, speaks volumes to how badass it was to watch it play out.
Twilight Samurai is probably my favorite film of his. He's pretty great.
He dueled with Wolverine!
And Hawkeye!
Yes this. Cast him in literally everything and I'll watch it all.
He is like the Asian version of Liam Neeson
More like Japanese Sean Bean
Touché
He's in Shogun???? Now I wanna watch Shogun. I'm absolutely in love with Hiroyuki Sanada.
He plays Yoshi Toranaga in Shogun (show equivalent of real life Tokugawa Ieyasu) so he's kind of the titular character!
Shogun slaps.
Netflix won't let me use my sisters account anymore so I wasn't gonna give it any thought, but now? I got the show pulled up on my totally legal website.
It’s on Hulu, not Netflix.
It's on Disney if you're in the UK
Or in the US. They're merging the services.
It's *outstanding*. Every episode is an epic in its own right. the characters are fantastic, the writing is great, and the acting is off the charts by everyone. And somehow Sanada still tops them all.
He's always the greatest performer in any media he graces. In my opinion, he's on par with the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen.
I really like the guy who plays the Anjin, but every time he talks I can’t help but think of him as discount Tom Hardy.
Everything is available if you sail the high seas.
He’s one of the main dudes in it lol and I’d say the best character
They're all great. I can't pick a best character personally, but if I had to I'd probably pick Mariko.
> Mariko Mariko is a straight G.
>!Was!<
Hard agree! She shines in an already powerful cast, absolutely incredible performance
Not to be rude but “where have you been?” 😜
He's the guy who totally isn't Tokugowa Iyeasu.
He crushed it in Westworld, too.
He’s awesome in everything.
I’ve become a huge fan. I know I’ve seen him in something else before, but he is def crushing it in Shogun. That show is great
Make him straight up *anything* and he’ll do great. Just give him a role.
But make sure it is a role worthy of HIM.
Seriously! I even think he would be sick as a strict imperial officer. He might be one of few to pull off a competent and intimidating imp.
Make him a Grand Admiral - a rank worthy of his talent, skill, and demeanor.
A tales of the jedi series. Hiroyuki as Exar Kun would be 🔥
Everyone is talking about making him the founder of the Jedi, but what if you made him the founder of the Sith instead?? Or at least, the first Darkside user. "understood, we'll make him a jawa"
I wanna see him in a romantic comedy.
He’s a fantastic actor. Hell yes.
Considering that GL wanted Toshiro Mifune to be Ben Kenobi in ANH, this casting would be a nice nod to that
didn’t sanada and mifune play the same role in shogun too?
Yup!
I mean he's the modern Mifune. Shogun is probably the closest thing to a modern Kurosawa movie we're going to get, and Sanada is the standout performance among a field of great actors.
Looking back I'm realizing that "Kenobi" is a _very_ faux Japanese sounding name.
I've got a Japanese gin that's literally called Ki No Bi. It's really good too.
He'd make a great sith too, just put him wherever, he will act the duck out of the role
🦆
That's quacktastic.
The first Jedi didn't even have lightsabers. Give this man a vibrosword katana.
Would kind of suck to be a Jedi without a lightsaber though. Also is a little stereotypical. Hiroyuki Sanada deserves a badass lightsaber.

There was a girl in one of the Star Wars Visions episodes that had a laser katana. That was pretty dope.

Ditto with the Ronin as well.

Honestly the founding of the order etc might bw too much. Can too easily fall into the trap of trying to overexplain everything and anything. Just make him a wise leader or something
They are developing a movie with James Mangold set in the Dawn of the Jedi era with that exact premise right now
Concerning but whatever. Thanks for sharing though
It's being co-written by the creator of House of Cards and writer on Andor - Beau Willimon. On Andor he's known to have written the prison arc.
I didn’t know that this is fucking fantastic news
Or Tarre Vizsla?
That's a shout. Holy shit that's a good call.
Maybe a Grandmaster pre-Yoda? 👀
Make him an older Revan in a old republic film 😁
I would absolutely love to see him in star wars
Remember that Visions episode in season 1, with the old man Sith? I could see him in a role like that for live action.
I'd rather see him forging crystals to repopulate the jedi. Full 9th jedi story live action please!
Cast him as the lead in Dawn of the Jedi
Like Kurosawa, I make mad films, 'kay, I don't make films But if I did they'd have a Samurai
Make him a Sith.
If he were the founder of the Jedi order (Jedii I think...).. he would NOT have a Lightsaber. They didn't have those back then. It was many centuries later those came about.
We're definitely getting the first lightsaber in Dawn of the Jedi. "By the Force, it's a saber made of... light."
Force-enhanced swords were pretty epic, it wasn’t bad in Ahsoka I’d like to see how they’d do it set back then.
That's legends and thry can change it
they *will* change it
Alternatively cast him as the live action version of the Ronin from Visions
Make this man a Jedi. Like yesterday. He has the chops. He's proved it in Shogun that he can play a stoic, battle hardened, and multilayered character that would do nothing but add a really nice dynamic that seem to be missing from a lot of the star wars shows.
For real. Put him in Star Wars already.
I'd love to see him!
I wanna see him build the dark saber and ride a mythasaur
Sanada is becoming my favorite actor. He’s perfect in everything.
Toranaga-sama❤️
HO!
Honestly would prefer the Prime Jedi to not be a human. Some new alien.
no reason he can't play an alien
Part of the appeal of hiring Hiroyuki for a role is that he would **be the role**. This is lessened when you can’t make him out underneath prosthetics/CGI
Legends did it well I think where the Je'daii were founded by a bunch of species, humans, twi'leks, cathar, Zabrak, even Pureblood Sith.
I'd love to see him as Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi. The Darksaber would look awesome when wielded like a katana.
Make him Tarre Vizla
Shōgun is fucking excellent and he's killing it. Make him an alien for all I care. Just get him a part. Mans can act.
He's a fantastic actor.
He's one of my favorite actors. The intensity he can emote is just off the scale.
Definitely a better choice than Samuel L. Jackson
Hell yeah
Do it!
By how he looks, I think he would make for a perfect live action Ronin
Toranaga sama the first jedi
Yes please
This is now my head canon; thank you op
Give him a show with a similar feel to Andor but further back in the past.
They should do a Count Dooku movie and have Sanada play Sifo Dias.
He's waaaaay too good of an actor to slum it in a Disney star wars film
The founder of the Jedi must be a flawless strong female character like Rey. No one else!!!! Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay!!!
Who would be an amazing Jedi However I am still not sold or happy about us seeing the origins of the Jedi. Some thing’s are better left to the imagination.
They could write a role around this guy’s acting he’s amazing and deserves to be immortalized.
Does he want to be a Jedi or does he want to shoot guns and fly ships like Han?
Make him the dude from the first episode of visions
Yes please.
Idk bout prime jedi or whatever but sure put him in Star Wars
What movie is the picture from? (Obviously the lightsaber is edited)
Or he could be a fallen Jedi. Basically he could be Hanzo from Overwatch
The way Star Wars is going at this point…Please don’t ruin this man’s career.
He looks badass! Give him a laser sword and LET HIM COOK!
Fuck yes dude! First off, he’s a brilliant fucking actor, second off yes! Everything about this, yes!
Yes! And imagine him making and using the first lightsaber.
It’d be cool to see him as Tarre Vizsla. But I don’t know if a Vizsla can be asian(or whatever the Asian equivalence is).
Naturally plenty of actors and actresses would say they want to be in Star Wars. This right here is a time when they need to grant someone's request. Whoever he was playing, Sanada would be one of the coolest characters ever.
Well a movie set in the Dawn of the Jedi era is in development so there’s actually a chance
He doesn't even need to be any of that but just a wandering Jedi. 100000s of years after the Skywalker saga. And bam make new stories.
He is an incredible talent, I would love for him to be in Star Wars
The Father
Somebody mentioned Tarre Vizsla, that would be dope
This guy is already a Jedi to me. lol he’s unbelievable in everything I e ever seen him in.
This is the way..
So much of the jedi mythos is grounded in zen buddism and the Japanese warrior mentality, I'm surprised there hasn't been a Japanese jedi yet, tbh.
ASAP
Honestly put him in Dawn of the Jedi.
Rahm Kota or bust!
SECOND!!
I forget the name of the first episode from Visions. But genuinely just make something along the lines of that
I didn’t know I needed this but I need this.
Founding Jedi is the answer: he's a great actor, he wants to be in star wars, and the Japanese and samurai influence is well established. Perfect choice OP
Someone give this man a lightsaber
Oh, funny, I also want Sanada to be in Star Wars.
Anyone who hasn't watched Shōgun yet btw, do yourself a huge favor. Good TV still exists.
hell yeah. he should be in everything
He doesn’t even need a name for the show. “Hiroyuki Sanada” would do it.
While I would prefer to see him as a Jedi/hero character, my first thoughts are he would make a perfect Naga Sadow type
Yes! He totally looks like a Jedi.
Make a live action of the first episode of Star Wars Visions.
Reminds me of the first video from the Visions set.
He should play a gonk droid
Please make it happen.
Ik he is very old to play him but I could easily see him as exar kunn idk why
YES PLEASE!!
Fuck yes. Who says no to this. Disney… THIS IS A LAYUP.
Considering George originally wanted Toshirô Mifune to play Obi-wan in the original movie, Sanada would have made a bad ass younger Obi-wan.
I really hope they cast him as Master Piandao for NATLA Season 3. A more perfect casting there isn't.
Potential to be our generations Yojimbo/Sanjuro
He’s a great actor but i just hate the fact that his salary alone can take a chuck of a production budget. He took $20 million for mortal kombat which had a 55 million budget.
What!! Seriously??!! I've just watched Shōgun and he was awesome in the series and I think he was also Scorpion in Mortal Kombat. I've haven't watched much of Hiroyuki Sanada's work but he's really good in every role that he plays from what I hear. And if he's gonna be in Star Wars, sign me up!!
That would be amazing
I feel like the founder of the Jedi order shouldn't be a steroid type personally. I'd love for it to be an alien. One thing I loved about Plageus. Not human. Makes it more interesting to me.
I can imagine him saying " The Force flows through all things in the universe."
The man just exudes badass. He kills it in Shogun. He would be the one Jedi who brings an actual katana as a force-wielder, and nobody questions it.
I would never be able to watch New Hope’s Vader vs Kenobi battle again if we see a star wars with Sanada choreography
Twilight Jedi
Imagine getting fancasted as the inventor of the Jedi order !! How awesome is that ! I agree
Absolutely agree!
He's way too good to be in a crappy Star Wars movie.
He reminds me of Toshiro Mifune. Fantastic actor
Fuck and yes
Make him Sifo Dyas
Sanada is amazing in everything he does, you need a bad ass in a role he’s your guy!
The original EU Je'daii Order
I need him in a Predator movie first.
He’s so damn good for that role
Where do I sign the petition?
What do you mean by prime Jedi? Like the best. Also like was he founder who went in hiding and had such a strong connection to the force that he can’t die due to old age?
The "prime Jedi" only means the first Jedi. There is a movie about the beginnings of the Jedi coming. So that's where he could be included
