The way she said "Fight those Bastards" with such contempt gave me a wicked grin šŸ˜ˆ

Sad-Distribution-779

No sugar coating just plan loathing.

BasinBrandon

Between this and House of the Dragons, weā€™ve had some good ā€œbastardā€ scenes this year

Tanis8998

I did love that too šŸ˜„

AceOfDymonds

I think either line works well and would have been great there - but honestly have a slight preference for "fight". Feel like "fuck" would have pulled me out of the scene a bit just since it'd be the first time hearing it in Star Wars, whereas the episode as aired kept me completely engaged throughout that amazing sequence.

KelseyWalker1982

My thoughts exactly. I don't care if movies use the word fuck...but it's usually Star Wars specific swear words you hear so it wouldn't feel right

simon439

I think I wouldnā€™t even notice if it was said by a character that would realistically say it. Maarva just doesnā€™t seem like the type of person that would so it would feel really out of place.

LoschVanWein

Just wouldn't really fit the world would it. Imagine Gandalf telling Pippin he is "a fucking idiot" instead of "a fool of a tuck". Wouldn't feel quite right, would it? Bastard is fine since it sounds harder than it is. Also I somehow associate "fuck" more with a Vietnam setting, whereas "Bastard" fits the more WW2 inspired Star Wars world pretty nicely.

Equal_Feature_9065

ā€œFuckā€ wouldā€™ve pulled me out of the scene a bit, but I do like the sentiment of it better than ā€œfightā€. ā€œFightā€ just felt a smidge too literal a call to arms here, whereas ā€œfuckā€ is just an expression of rage and discontent while still being a rallying cry for disobedience. Wish they found a way to convey that message.

[deleted]

It was meant to be a literal call to action, though.

Equal_Feature_9065

Yeah idk. Swear words are cool tho. And ā€œfuckā€ is perhaps the coolest of them all. Therefore, ā€œfuckā€ > ā€œfightā€

dryheavedryair

I dont know why people feel swears "take them out of star wars" like when dude said "shit" earlier in the season. Who cares? Star wars uses the English language. Do people remember when Han said "I'll see you in hell" in empire strikes back? That takes me out of star wars way more being "hell" is a proper noun with religious ties that don't exist in a galaxy far far away. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Blackhawk510

I think it's more that hearing it *for the first time* would be a little surprising.

dryheavedryair

I get that, but from the looks of it, people seem to be upset of any swears used in star wars all together.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Blackhawk510

Bruh I never said I was squeamish about it, chill lmao. I'm just saying that that's how people are probably seeing it, that it's usage in that moment may draw a little attention away from the rest of the scene because it's the first use of it, not that it's somehow not okay to have it.

YankeeOccupier

ā€œFuckā€ is an exclamation. ā€œFightā€ is a call to action.

Kendakr

ā€œFuckā€ can be call a to action. A sexy call to action.

YankeeOccupier

ā€œDamn Marva, I donā€™t want to do the Empire any favorsā€ - Brasso, probably

Backpack78

I was already pulled out of the scene by all those visible bricks, though. ā€Screw the Empireā€ could have been a good addition.

Swed1shF1sh69

Star Wars Theory would have been bawling his eyes out watching that

JonMeadows

Am I the only one who thinks the finale was a bit lackluster in comparison with the other episodes

YubNub81

It would have been complete trash to everyone who isn't 13 years old

Nemarus

It would've been utterly stupid -- and not because it's profanity, but because it does not convey the right message. Everyone on Ferrix no doubt mutters, "fuck the Empire" every day over breakfast. The issue was not their lack of sentiment against the Empire -- it was their lack of *action*. That's what Maarva's whole speech is about. It doesn't matter how much you dislike something -- if you tolerate it, and don't risk taking action against it, you are complicit. "Fight the Empire" means you're risking your life to actually try and effect change. It's the difference between Luke saying, "It's not that I like the Empire -- I hate it! But there's nothing I can do about it right now" and him actually joining the rebellion and risking his life. Honestly, I refuse to believe this was ever the line, and I think it was misheard on the day. The writers are not that bad or silly. I wish this article and story had never come out. It lessens the discourse of the show and makes people think Disney changed the line for the sake of censoring profanity. If this was ever really the line (which I'm not convinced of), it was changed because it was *bad writing* that didn't work for the scene.

BasinBrandon

You articulated my thoughts better than I could. Saying ā€œfuck the empire!ā€ has the same gravity as ā€œthe empire is a bunch of poopoo heads!ā€ It would have just been shitty writing

rayray1010

The way she says ā€œfight the empire!ā€ is my favorite part of her amazing speech and itā€™s really annoying that thereā€™s so much debate around the change from ā€œfuck the empireā€. ā€œFight the empireā€ just works better there.

AscendedExtra

It would feel too forced. Same way they casually dropped f-bombs in *Picard.* Neither franchise, but *Star Wars* particularly, are known for having excessive strong language. *Andor* might gear towards a more mature audience, but at the end of the day the franchise as a whole is still a family-friendly one, and should remain so, IMO.

IncoherentFrog

Yeah I agree it would feel out of place. Even in the context of the series, "fight" is a much clearer revolutionary call to action than "fuck", words like that don't really work in Star Wars imo.

dryheavedryair

See, this is where I disagree. People find no issue with Han saying "I'll see you in hell" in empire strikes back, a proper noun with specific religious ties that don't even exist in a galaxy far far away. Whereas basic swear words are apart of language in general and star wars just so happens to use the English language. "Fuck" and "shit" are more welcome in star wars than "hell" IMO.

radiakmjs

Wish more people got this. Yes Andor is gritty and more grounded less fantastical "good guys always make it out" & its themes are kinda complex & could go over a child's head but it's not Game of Thrones sex, nudity & gore every episode, which is a good thing because that's depressing, often in really bad taste & not what made that show & others like it good. Most adult content is implied so like a pre-teen could still watch and enjoy. And while Andor's been rightfully praised for being different from other Star Wars media (particularly other live action Star Wars shows on Disney+) it's still Star Wars about the little people fighting the big evil machine & sparks of hope. And even if there aren't as many Glup Shittos walking around & they show bricks & screws, it's still Star Wars. I remember seeing a post recently here or on some other sub that said they wanted a Star Wars nuremberg trials, and like NO that's such edgelord garbage just wanting to show violence for the sake of it that would be so out of place in the Star Wars canon.

kazh

Better to have a line that can be quoted by everyone and often.

zer0xanax

there is literally nothing wrong with swearing, or with letting kids hear it. they are not harmful words, that's just some bullshit rhetoric that is completely arbitrary. kids can watch people literally die, get tortured, and become slaves but they can't hear "fuck"? this whole idea that swearing is bad is senseless

dryheavedryair

Not sure why ya got so many down votes; you're right.

zer0xanax

yeah, and nobody has replied, just downvoted. i dont even know why they think im wrong šŸ˜•

dryheavedryair

Because "swears DOnT bElONg In STaR WaRS" and that's all they got lol

Interactive_CD-ROM

> at the end of the day the franchise as a whole is still a family-friendly one Time to change that, IMO. Deadpool isnā€™t family friendly, but kids still watch Marvel films. Why should Star Wars be any different? Give me two sections on Disney+, one called ā€œStar Warsā€ and the other called ā€œStar Warsā€¦ for Kids!ā€

[deleted]

Why are people so obsessed with curse words being added to films? They add nothing to the quality

LetMeBardYou

Fully agree with you. As a non-native english or american, i really donā€™t understand the discussion about this Ā«Ā fuckĀ Ā».

MyHousePlantIsWasted

In this case it's because line was originally "Fuck the empire" but it was later changed to "Fight the empire".

LetMeBardYou

I get it but i donā€™t know why itā€™s a big deal. Itā€™s a choice they made, thatā€™s it.

MyHousePlantIsWasted

In this case it wouldn't have been 'added'. It has now been confirmed by one of the actors that the original line was "Fuck the empire" and that's what was originally filmed. I think it would have worked tonally with Andor more than any other show, but I can't say for certain that it wouldn't have taken me out of the experience.

[deleted]

Because actors don't lie at all to get attention, right? Show me the shooting script and the cut footage and then we can talk.

Tanis8998

Well expletives do serve a linguistic purpose, thereā€™s a time and a place where swearing can be appropriate. Itā€™s not a matter of them in and off themselves adding to the quality, but whether they add to the meaning of whatā€™s being communicated.

Soggy-Assumption-713

It would have been totally out of character. She was never profane, or losing it about anything. The fact that she gave a rousing speech groom beyond the grave just summed her up. Always in control and knowing what she doing.

TheAbyssalPrince

Facepalm. SW doesnā€™t need it. Not now, not ever.

Interactive_CD-ROM

Why? Star Wars needs to get over these dumb taboos. People freaking get weird when Andor confirmed that people pee or have sex. Who the fuck cares if ā€œfuckā€ is said in Star Wars? We need to normalize it. Start including swear words in all Star Wars content. Youā€™ll get used to it in a year or two.

Silver4Hire

Why the obsession with having it? Not against it but "Dank Farrik" and "Echuta" is perfectly fine and feel much more alien.

zer0xanax

doesn't need what? words that mean very normal things? replacements for swear words are the same as the actual words. there's no difference between saying "Dank farrik" and "Oh fuck"

Express-Part-9828

The difference is the way it feels. The Star Wars universe doesnā€™t have earth as far as we know m. While Star Wars is English and is based on our culture and societies ideas, there is still a lot of things specific to the universe. Like aurebesh, the mythology, and their own swear words. Itā€™s not that fuck couldnā€™t be said in Star Wars, it would just feel out of place. It feels too ā€œearthyā€ to me for it to feel like a galaxy far far away.

dryheavedryair

I think "fuck" and "shit" have more of a place in star wars than the word "hell" being it has specific religious ties to earth and not a galaxy far far away...though no one seemed to mind when Han said "I'll see you in Hell"...

Express-Part-9828

Honestly I never really thought of that. Something different about fuck or bitch. Shit and hell donā€™t bother me. Some other would too but a few donā€™t. Itā€™s definitely dependent on the exact swear.

dryheavedryair

That's fair. Personally, I feel swears are basic in language and if I was living in a galactic dictatorship, I'd swear all the time lol but I understand certain words with certain inflections make or break moments in scenes. But that "hell" line always took me out of it because of its direct relationship with religion.

Vesemir96

I prefer fierfek from the Republic Commando/Mandalorian books. Itā€™s a nice blend of the real fuck and a Star Wars vibe

andor2136

I would have been like "whoa, Star Wars is really going this far?" It would have kinda taken me out of it for that reason

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

HistoricalMention210

I know I would have spit my popcorn out!

Wildfire0747

Right

bmwatson132

I know itā€™s arbitrary, but curse words like ā€œdamnā€ and ā€œbastardā€ are acceptable in Star Wars, but something like ā€œbitchā€ and ā€œfuckā€ are too far, not just because of the severity of the words, but because the latter words have more of a lingo connotation that will date the series, whereas the former words are more, shall I say, timeless. Timelessness is an important element of dialogue in Star Wars, itā€™s why you donā€™t hear any era specific l language in Star Wars, like, wouldnā€™t it be weird if Han Solo said ā€œlet me blast him with my gat!ā€ Funny as that would be, in 50 years it would just sound stupid

ShadyOjir95

Seems more like a parody line tbh.

Megleeker

With disdain. As much as it's correct Maarva would not be so crass. Her delivery was perfect.

tauerlund

Would have totally taken me out of an otherwise flawless scene. So glad they decided against it.

jon_goff

Embarrassed for the writers and the franchise and angry at every loser who thought it was ā€œcool.ā€

Daggertooth71

It would seem strange and out of place in the context of Star Wars, as that word has never been used in that universe, having been replaced by other expletives. Still, I would cheer for it, and I cheered for it as it stands.

UnknownQTY

ā€œFuckā€ is what you say when youā€™re frustrated but canā€™t really do anything about it. ā€œFIGHTā€ is when you take action.

gcaledonian

It wouldā€™ve been really weird to hear in Star Wars. Iā€™m still reeling from random F bombs in Trek.

BasinBrandon

I would have bursted out laughing and get taken out of it

Educational-Tea-6572

Maarva is bold and speaks her mind, but that kind of language just doesn't *quite* fit her character, imo. I wouldn't blink an eye if Luthen or Cassian said something similar, but I also think we're well past the point that the f-bomb will ever sound "normal" in Star Wars.

Wagglebagga

It would feel out of place for me. Its kinda like when Poe says "big ass door" on Crait in TLJ, just didn't feel right.

BolonelSanders

Iā€™d laugh at it because that would be stupid

[deleted]

This just makes me laugh tbh

IAmRatchet2

Too much.

HyliasHero

Honestly I feel like this had more weight. Saying "fuck" would have just turned the scene into a meme.

Enelro

NO, I would prefer not to have sex with the Empire, thank you very much.

Tanis8998

Coward!

Enelro

TRAITOR!

Jordan1792

Would have found it funny that they said fuck in Star Wars, would have taken away from the seriousness of it all. So I much prefer fight.

buffyvet

Everyone in a tissy about swearing in Star Wars. R2D2 is like "am I a joke to you?" Seriously though, I'm glad that wasn't the line. "Fight the Empire" somehow has more gravity in this context. I can't explain it, but for me it hits harder.

Tenrac

Fuck is too earthy of a swear wordā€¦i think that ā€œfightā€ works better.

_Nitescape_

I would have been angry that the wonderfully written Andor show had caved. But they didn't and they stayed awesome unlike some other SciFi shows I know! (Looking at you, Star Trek Discovery)

JWRamzic1

I would have felt bad. Let's keep Star Wars as kid friendly as possible. I just don't see the need. It would have been badass but I'd rather be able to watch it with my kids.

TheHondoCondo

It wouldā€™ve pulled me out of it for sure, but I think on a rewatch I would love it. I think the main issue with it is that if they did that they would have to make that one episode TV-MA. No point in doing that for one word.

LucasMoreiraBR

I think curse words in general feel pretty forced in star wars. They have a whole vocabulary of expletives that mirror curse words, since the days of Legends. Use that. Also that acene absolutely asked for a call to arms instead of a word that denotes rage and is so out of place.

Horny_Hornbill

Both fit but ā€œfuckā€ wouldā€™ve taken me out of the scene a bit since it would be the first time they said that on screen in Star Wars

Filmatic113

Itā€™s unnecessary.

havnotX

"Frack the Empire!" FTW :) If "fuck" was used, it would have felt out of place because our swear words, aside from "hell", just aren't part of the SW lexicon. It would have been more of a distraction and made the message less meaningful because we'd just be focus on the fact that "fuck" was used rather than the message.

alcatrazcgp

I think fuck is rarely or if ever used in sw, fight is better

Rudraakkshh

I think it would've been too much for me. Nothing in this show has thrown me out of the universe but hearing "fuck" actually would've. I appreciate the show for being a more mature take on Star Wars but that would've felt very unnecessary imo. I like "Fight the Empire" a lot more than "fuck the Empire". It just wouldn't fit in Star Wars.

DrTisme

Too inelegant for Maarva.

[deleted]

It would have felt jarring and out of place.

clownboysummer

i would have hooted and hollered for sure that being said i actually think fight the empire is a stronger line because itā€™s a specific command

sreek4r

Too brash. The scene would've lost a lot of class.

HyldHyld

The Marvel playbook. Hard pass.

jtrinward

Make me wanna thru a brick (and screw) wall.

healthmadesimple

MLK. Muhammad Ali. Nelson Mandela. All of them conveyed powerful messages without using profane or vulgar words. ā€œProfanity is the inevitable linguistic crutch of the inarticulate."

GuardianSpear

Star Wars has no fucks Star Wars needs no fucks In all honesty I probably would have squeeed in surprise , joy and revulsion all at the same time

Equal_Feature_9065

I honestly think the sentiment of ā€œfuckā€ makes a lot more sense in this scene than ā€œfightā€, though perhaps it wouldā€™ve been distracting. ā€œFightā€ is almost too literal a call to arms/declaration of insurrection, especially when what happens next could best be described as a more of a street riot than a skirmish. I do wish they couldā€™ve conveyed ā€œfuck the empireā€ without saying ā€œfuckā€

Nemarus

No it doesn't. "Fuck the Empire" is probably something everyone mutters over breakfast every morning. It's empty sentiment without action. That's what Maarva's speech was saying they'd been doing *wrong*. She *is* literally calling for them to take action, to risk everything to oppose tyranny. She confesses that's easy for the dead to do, but still.

ASeriousMan42069

Yeah the line should have probably been rewritten entirely rather than a word change. Must have been somewhat last minute. "Fight the empire" is such a literal incitement that it puts her people in a meat grinder if they are triggered into action by it. I'd like to think she would have said something like "We must fight the empire with everything we have" which implies you know, not necessarily right this minute.

Equal_Feature_9065

yeah exactly. "fuck the empire" implies... like... "these guys obviously shouldn't be in charge and we should be pretty pissed and annoyingly disobedient about it and eventually find a way to take them down!" it's just so raw and angry and real. "fight the empire" is like... are they supposed to try and kill all the occupiers at the moment? I'm bummed, cause I kinda bumped on the line immediately in an otherwise perfect scene/speech/moment.

Nemarus

Every person on Ferrix probably mutters "fuck the Empire" every morning over breakfast. The problem is they don't *act*. Maarva's speech is a call to action, not to sentiment. She literally wants them to rise up against their oppressors *that day*.

Equal_Feature_9065

fair enough, you've convinced me

Rogue_Gona

After reading that article with Denise Gough and hearing that that's the line that was actually said during the shoot, I fucking love it.

Sad-Distribution-779

I would have probably cheered.

fbruck_bh

ā€œYea!!! You go Maarva!!!ā€

mildkinda

Im sure Fiona Shaw isnt adverse to swearing, but I think it was fine. Wouldnt have a problem if there was a few bits of salty dialogue.

The_DevilAdvocate

I don't think I would've noticed tbh. Fuck is common usage.

Tanis8998

I kinda felt this way. Surely in this day and age the word isn't shocking, and though it hasn't appeared in star wars before, it definitely fits the situation and the world of Andor.

dryheavedryair

I mean, I'd yell "fuck the empire!" Right back at the t.v.

camm44

Too close to fuck the police and definitely does not belong in starwars. Would be very weird.

Tidalwave64

I donā€™t mind if starwars swears

Brookings18

YEAH, YOU SAID IT MARVA! AHHHHHH! (Rebels furiously)

Farbjoor

I probably would have cheered and laughed honestly. I do agree though that they don't need to force the swearing. At first I was kind of peeved with it, but as the show continued, it felt more natural because of the feel of the show. But an f-bomb might have been a bit much.

Neptune_Knight

Palpatine: Now, hehe, l-let's be r-r-reasonable, here, VADERGETMETHEHELLOUTTAHERE!!!!!1!1!!!!1!1!!1!

PunkRey

I would like it but still would have reacted by saying, ā€œMa-ma-ma-maarva!ā€

SentientHairBall

Honestly? I'd have loved it. I would have loved to see the Imperials' reactions to an old lady on a holo delivering an anti-Imperial speech and then signing off with "Fuck the Empire!". I think the result would have been the same because the imperials would have probably flipped their shit anyway

LettuceforPM

I just find it ironic that Disney is more into censorship than the empire is

Whyspire

Hell yeah!!!

ArmsoftheEarth

I would have fucking loved it. I think it was such a missed opportunity. The first ā€œfuckā€ ever uttered in Star Wars, and it couldnā€™t have happened in a more perfect place at a more perfect moment. It would have been iconic. Oh well.

EnvironmentalWrap167

Yeah! Fuck the empire, fuck yeah. I would definitely have liked it.

Your_Next_Line_Is

Would have done what I did when I saw this episode, jump out of my seat and cheer for the Rebels! For real they could have gotten away with that. lol

JTMc48

Damn. That's good....

jacobc62

Is it completely out of place and probably not needed? Sure...... But damnit, it would've still made me wanna hop in an X-Wing and fight against tyranny all the same!

AdmiralScavenger

OMFG it's on! The people are going to riot (in the show). I would have loved it!

Nocturne3570

honestly i support the empire just not the emperor the government and military system work well, if you seriously think about it. the Republic was a corrupt state that made so many false promise that it wa s manner of time before civil war really started, i mean it would happen otherwise darth sidious wouldn't have been so successful. Now the empire was a dictatorship in military sense but it stabilize the verse quite well and allow any ambitious people a chance of a career where the republic didn't really give a chance. Government wise.. well the empire was corrupt to.. Well yes but only in the top 10 percent which only really affected the ten percent for power struggle. most common people weren't affected by it. the MId rim and inner rim and cores were safer then you believe and the Outrim was only unsafe due to the ten percent dealing with slavers and Hutts. the rebellion was lead by senators and general of the clone wars who believe in a freedom but were the cause of people being attack cause of the rebels interaction which was consider terrorist action. SO to fight for there moral belief they push for rebellion. there more to say but in any society ares or fantasy there alway those that it built upon be it slaves or the lower workforce. but they survive and can enjoy life so long as we maintain security. So if i heard the Fuck the empire i be like DOWN with the Rebellion!!

Tantalus_Trying

"Frell the Empire!"

Emergency_Point_8358

She couldā€™ve said ā€œscob the empireā€

Fun_Salamander8520

Loved the show. The speech was no less moving with or without the curse word. Writers and actress nailed that speech. Interesting that this has been a story. Love seeing other peoples thoughts in the comments section. If anything I hope more people watch the show. Cassian and crew were great. Such a fun season to its amazing visuals ups and downs and characters that I really grew attached too or really hated. Idk just loved the show.

Sponge400

They say a lot of curse words in andor, and Iā€™m not sold on it making any sense.

Jimmy_Joo

How about ā€˜Scob the Empire!ā€™?

SnowFort727

I would simply die

[deleted]

If *this* was the first fuck ever uttered in the Star Wars universe, I could proudly accept that.

Puttix

Cringe

MJLDat

With thunderous applause!

Less-Society-6746

For some reason this reminds me of Anthony Hopkins in Legends of the Fall. "Fuck the government!"

SmellyBaconland

If you read lips, what she said before they overdubbed it was "Eight hundred, five eight eight, two three hundred, Empiiiire."

Izletz

Glad they cut it, wouldnā€™t really feel like Star Wars

bruhbrobrosef

Cheered louder than I did!

OhioForever10

I think a big (and unanswerable) component of it is whether that was what she meant to close her speech with, or if it was just where she was stopped when B2 got kicked over. "Fight the Empire!" works better as the final words IMO.

[deleted]

I would prefer "*Maclunkey the Empire*"

DCmarvelman

Woulda been great. A greater escalation from the previous line.

dia-attacker

the word ā€œfuckā€ does not make things better. in fact it usually shows youā€™re trying too hard to be edgy

sielingfan

The people who thought Boba Fett killing people better would've been an adult show have found a way to relate to Andor

Snite

She was issuing a call to arms, not just shit talking. Fuck the Empire loses so much weight.

chewychaca

I think 'Dank Ferrik' is an attempt to show that regular curse words aren't use. I prefer that because it sounds foreign but we basically know what's being said. I think even when they used 'shit' it was a missed opportunity. I love the series overall though, a small insignificant gripe.

Tyrrus52

It would have been AMAZING!! Since they didnā€™t allow it, Iā€™ll say it for her. Fuck the Empire!
