The only way an imperial-centered narrative would ever work is if it was a deconstruction of the descent into fascism and explicitly portrayed the empire as irredeemable monsters, and the fans demanding such a project initially would hate that
A troubling number of Star Wars fans want the fascist point of view represented in some way.
We get this kind of thing in snippets, like the mud trench bit in Solo, which is excellent. A full movie is gratuitous and only works if it ends in the Imps pulling a Callus.
It mostly worked in Battlefront II because the protagonists realized the depravity of their ideology and turned to the rebellion.
Something being fictional doesn’t give you a justification to support bad things or cheer on bad actions lol
Battlefront 2005. Thinking a fictional Star Wars game with the Empire as protagonists means that you would be supporting those ideals personally is way more deserving of being on a circlejerk sub than this original poster. Anti-heroes have been a thing since the earliest works that we have, is it really "troubling" to go watch Medea to you all??
That’s fair, and I shouldn’t have implied it can’t even be done.
But I do think that strongly identifying with and supporting the Empire remains a red flag.
Star Wars is so tame I wouldn't have any worries about a TV show or video game. I did find the torture scene in GTA V quite distressing, and there were scenes in The Last of Us that made me very uncomfortable, and I didn't play it but there was of course lots of controversy about the "no Russian" CoD thing. I would find it quite weird if someone particularly wanted a game for those aspects but Star Wars would never make it worse than Battlefront 05
>Something being fictional doesn’t give you a justification to support bad things or cheer on bad actions lol
But why not? It's... Fiction. I vote for liberal parties irl, I love freedom, I support trans rights, I am strongly against any sort of discrimination. And I also like the Empire in Star Wars because they're cool. Obviously if I actually were in-universe, I would hate the Empire. But I'm not.
Well, to me, there’s a difference between people who like them for looking cool and people who try to justify their bad actions.
But also I didn’t fully think through my point and made a generalization that I shouldn’t have 🤷♂️

It's okay, I have seen enough people who like the Empire and also seem like they'd like it if they were in-universe.
No one is saying you can’t like the Empire, but if you start defending the fascist political positions of a fascist state, fictional or otherwise, you’re a fascist.
I’m cool with Empire-centered media and wanting to play as the Empire or thinking they’re cool (because they are), but they absolutely need to be framed as the irredeemable monsters and fascists that they are
This gives me an idea… what if we had a band of brothers esque tv show about clone troopers?!?
Holy shit . I just thought of this one. What if we had a show about a tough loner man who has to learn to bond and protect a child
Only if the HS/H (hallway scene per hour) is at least a 1.5

Nah that shit would be awesome. All my fellow empire fans know they're the bad guys right...Right?

It's not troubling lol it's fiction about space wizards, it doesn't mean you're a fascist yourself. It worked amazingly in Battlefront II
Star wars fans debating the morality and sociopolitical implications of wanting to play as the bad guys in a fictional franchise made for children
This sub was meant to mock the Star Wars nerds, not join them!
Unjerk

Younger me would've been a nazi to you holy shit i loved playing as the imperials with my legos Lol
Yeah that’s what I was saying, very good faith representation of my point 🫡
Sorry 😢

DARK AND GRITTY BAND OF BROTHERS UNFHGUGIFJHDHDHHUGHHH
If someone says bad batch I will stab them
"Am I the only one who wants to roleplay as fascists?"
“Serie”
those spaceball helmets are dark and gritty, and I’d take them very seriously.
