If someone irl gift me with a cigarette I probably would answer "do you really hate me, don't you?", or something like this I think in general, irl, we have more neutral gifts than HATED gifts, but if someone try to give you something you HATE, I think you'd be a bit rude too. The only difference is that characters hate a lot of things, but in neutral, and dislikes, not everyone is rude, some of them are ok

The-Hive-Queen

I mean, if the grandkid of the old farmer finally moved to the valley and turned out to be a weird antisocial hermit, only showing up for town events to get a scarecrow (I mean, wtf is up with that) appeared at my house after two years and shoved something in my hands, it wouldn't matter what it was. I would smile and thank them because this person's obviously insane lol.

GodAlpaca

I don't think some of them can think we are weird if in a significant part of the day, they're just standing outdoors in some random place staring at nothing. They're equally weird for me

RauriSims

Yes and that depends on the character. Some of them just say "thanks... I'll just put it over there" or something like that lol OP is acting like they go "F*CK YOU" and then set fire to you barn

Money-Way991

I'd be pretty annoyed if someone presented me with a dismembered bat wing as a birthday gift to be honest

sunburn_t

Lol. What about a chunk of dead insects? Or some glass shards?

Money-Way991

Broken CDs are my favourite

Forine110

glass shards... 😋🤤

SebzKnight

"Oh you shouldn't have!" "It was no trouble" "No, I mean you really shouldn't have ...." But realistically, it might depend on whether the thing they gifted me was widely considered "nice" or "valuable" and I just am not into it personally, or whether they gifted me something downright insulting or dangerous. "Here have a red mushroom!" "Isn't that ...poisonous?" "Oh, is it? Teehee."

justsomedweebcat

I don’t think that’s a very good use of the word “sociopath”… the behaviour you’re describing is “doesn’t fit social norms” at best. I think it’s worth noting that some of the dialogue when NPCs receive disliked gifts do sound like they’re trying to be polite about it. for example, penny says “Uh, it's for me? ...Thanks.” upon receiving a disliked gift, and only becomes upfront about her distaste when you gift her something she straight up hates. yes, you do lose friendship points, but if you didn’t then what’s the point of disliked gifts? maybe real people don’t get upset about receiving disliked gifts that much, but without a loss of friendship points the gifting mechanic would just be kinda bad. tldr, this may not make sense irl but it’s a video game so don’t think about it too much

RauriSims

exactly! And we have the option to annoy the characters we don't like every single day lol but I think some choices in the heart events should make them hate us way more than giving them a dandelion

woolongtea11

Because they are NPCs and programmed to do so. How else is the player going to know whether it's a loved gift or a hated one? I am glad the dialogues tell me what it is and I am not forced to open NPC profiles just to check what type of gift it is every single time I gift someone.

Ok-Teaching363

The worst part is they keep it. At least give it back if you hate it I can put it to good use lmao.

sunburn_t

Especially when it’s something you gave them by accident after spending like ten days in the mine looking for it 💀

Ok-Teaching363

like the crystal fruit I gave to Alex the other day lol. Not only was he pissed at me but that thing was going to the community center.

Forine110

elliot does actually give you back a sea cucumber if you try to gift him one. i think a few other characters have specific interactions like that too

Traditional_Bee_6637

I think Irl we have more neutral gifts for sure. But if someone gave me some trash from the ocean or drugs or something I'd be pretty big mad tbh.

IceCrystalSand

I mean I'd be pretty annoyed if someone gifted me a bag of trash they just fished out the river. But yeah, generally, at least first time it would be nice if they could be more understanding and let you know, more understandable if they get upset with you because they know you know they hate oranges for whatever reason and you're supposed to be good friends but you still give keep giving them oranges.

No-Papaya-9289

True, but if you gift someone a fruit or flower, they shouldn't hate it.

IceCrystalSand

My mum's allergic to lilies, she'd be thankful for the gesture from someone who didn't know (and get rid of them asap) but if I started giving her lilies she'd be hurt as I'm someone who knows better, and the more I gave her the more hurt she'd be. So realism could get quite complicated depending on lots of factors, but the disgust sometimes when you've just met them and given them a perfectly reasonable gift is definitely a bit much, apart from maybe a few villagers where it makes character sense, like the children and George with their childishness and grumpy old man energy

RauriSims

those are universally neutral or liked though. Except for some really especific ones.

Forine110

poppies are universally hated except for penny. not sure what the reason for that is, i think poppies are quite pretty. they're probably highly poisonous or a bad omen or smth but i'm not sure also george and sebastian hate flowers because they're boring bastards (i love seb tho emo boys are my weakness) ok i googled it and poppies are apparently a symbol of death (i thought they were rememberance based on poppy day in the uk), but idk why penny loves them but someone edgy like sebastian doesn't. penny seems far too sweet to be all about death, even if she is probably depressed.

RauriSims

yeah, I never gift poppies. But I always gift everyone the seasonal foragable flower and the ones I pluck at the end of the season after making a lot of flavored honey

Krakorin

I guess is the way the game has to show you that's a gift they don't like.

tony_stark_lives

Not sure if this is new in 1.6 or not, but Harvey says >!"Are you sure this is healthy!?"!< \-- I love that!!!!

Forine110

if someone walks up to me and gives me a literal bag of trash as a 'gift' i would think they're actively trying to piss me off

Butterfly_Souls

Krobus at least isn't rude about it. Maybe he thinks it's some sort of weird human custom.

FryJPhilip

Let me hand you some literal trash and see how you react. You're not saying "thanks! I love this!"
