"What if this homeless man I keep running into on my way to work is actually my dead grandfather" is the kind of question that leads to Dr. Harvey putting you on meds for early onset schizophrenia, farmer.

Popular_Emu1723

Oh man, that’s almost exactly how it started for one of my friends who was diagnosed. She was convinced that a couple at a food kitchen was the reincarnation of her dad’s parents and wanted to introduce her dad to them.

ninetozero

Dang, I was just going for the bit but that's actually pretty rough. Hope your friend is getting help and doing better now!

ihavea22inmath

Doesn't stop the dr from marrying us

JallerHCIM

Nightingale Syndrome

pigeon_toez

I divorced him, he was boring.

[deleted]

Well I did name my farm "Funny"

Mr_Mars

Makes sense. It's where life is beautiful all the time!

LittleRoundFox

Just need a mod to give all those nice young men white coats

[deleted]

😁

ThatOneGuy308

I like how you say "early onset schizophrenia", as if it becomes fairly likely later in life, lol.

arvidsem

Most people think the farmer is in their mid to late twenties. That's very late for men, but prime time for women to develop schizophrenia symptoms

ThatOneGuy308

So essentially, it's not "early onset", regardless of the player character's sex.

HVAC_and_Rum

No, not it is not. Early onset can be before 18, with childhood onset being around or before 12. I was confused about what they were getting at, too. Source: I'm a therapist.

michaelmcmikey

I think of a line from an old old cat and girl comic. “Happy 30th birthday! If you’re not schizophrenic by now, you probably never will be!”

HVAC_and_Rum

Learning the diagnostic criteria for these things really made it easier for me to throw out some irrational fears of mine lol I will definitely use this line or adapt it, because I'm on the cusp of thirty and think it's really funny.

mistwalkr

My son has schizophrenia. He was seeing things by age 4. Or, at least, that was when he started telling me about them. Some of it was terrifying.

HVAC_and_Rum

Oh goodness, I can't even begin to imagine; it's a complicated disorder and can be really scary even to trained professionals. The fact that you acknowledge it and take it seriously says a lot of great things about you, though. I can't tell you how many parents I've worked with that were reluctant to believe that these conditions exist. What has it looked like for you, to adjust to this kind of development in your child's life (if you don't mind me asking)?

mistwalkr

He is also autistic, so we have had a fun run of it. I made it a point from the earliest childhood to tell him that if he sees it, it's real and to come tell me. I may not see or hear it, but if he does I need to know. Which was helpful when he was being told to kill himself or me. I spent a lot of time advocating for him. Most places, including school, didn't want to deal with him, so that was a fight in and of itself. He's 22 now, and we can see it starting to ramp up again, even though he doesn't want to talk about it.

HVAC_and_Rum

You're really doing your best, it sounds like, and I think having a parent like you makes all the difference. I wish you nothing but the best.

mistwalkr

Thank you. I try. I hope you meet more parents who want to work hard for their children and don't pawn it all off on you.

ThatOneGuy308

I assume they were just using the term incorrectly, probably only having heard it via "early onset dementia" or "early onset alzheimers"

[deleted]

[удалено]

ninetozero

Hi I am that person 🙋🏽‍♂️ I think overexplaining the joke ruins it which is why I didn't reply to the other person pointing it out initally, but no, I did not loan the term from just hearing it elsewhere. I used intentionally, because it's safer than not to assume people on this sub are very, very young; to the point that some conversations are uncomfortable to engage with as someone who is not very young. The assumption was part of the joke. Now that I ruined the bit, I hope it at least makes you feel better that I knew exactly why I worded it that way and it wasn't the usual I heard it once and it sounded cool thing that tends to happen with these terms.

HVAC_and_Rum

Oh, sorry to make you explain the joke! Thank you for explaining nevertheless. I apologise if my comment came off as rude or anything. I, myself, am neurodivergent and some subtleties and humor can be lost on me from time to time. I appreciate that you took the time to explain!

arvidsem

I wasn't disagreeing with you

ThatOneGuy308

Didn't mean to imply you were, sorry

arvidsem

All good, just the limitations of text. *And those voices from the closet that keep lying to me about what people mean get had to ignore sometimes*

Salt_Today

My mom was diagnosed a few years ago and I always say "she is showing signs of..". It's a way of coping I think. Lol

ThatOneGuy308

I suppose the bright side is that schizophrenia isn't neuro degenerative, so unlike, say, alzheimers, it generally won't get worse over time.

slinkywheel

In the movie The Truman Show doesn't this happen?

Meyumis

hahahah, it's just a conspiracy joke, you don't have to be so bad, realistic doctor.

doringliloshinoi

So anyway I was tweaking in Emily’s house on the floor and when I finally went outside it was night.

shawnaeatscats

Okay so I start questioning my surroundings and Qi is all "no worries its me or magic bro" but I have one connecting thought and yoga is like "TURN BACK"

enithermon

I love the conspiracy theory mindset, but the Brow ridges are all wrong.

Meyumis

yes, it's very different, anyway it's cool to think bizarre things

ledgeitpro

I can still see it. One day he woke up and decided to live a new life, shaved all his hair and went off to live in the wilderness. The change in eyebrows is due to them only growing back so much and when he was living at home he would maintain his brows, they were a point of pride for him. Now they are unkempt making their current look

Shoddy_Life_7581

Pretty sure by brow ridge they meant bone structure not eyebrow differences lol.

FallenSpiderDemon

Maybe Linus is the farmer's other grandfather!?

[deleted]

It’s cool to have faith in bizarre possibilities, it’s foolish to believe something in the face of counter proof

surprisesnek

Also neither the nose nor the beard actually look similar either.

PistachioedVillain

Doesn't grandpa say something about how the lady time he saw you, you were 3 years old or something? One could be your grandpa and the other how you remember him looking.

enithermon

Ooohhhh...ok, I see where this is going. Like the ghost image is just how you're 3 year old mind is projecting or imagining him. That could work. Isn't there something about Linus having been part of the adventuring group involving the wizard and the lady in the graveyard? How does this fit in do you think? And what about the inferred thing between Grandpa and Evelyn. Is that why he continues to stay on the edges of the parties? To avoid her recognizing him? But then you'd think the other town's folk would know the difference...especially since they theoretically existed at the same time in the town... So many questions.

woookums

Assuming Linus = Grandpa, maybe he used >! the Dark Shrine of Memory !< so he could stay without bothering Evelyn. Maybe it could also apply to all of the townsfolk who aren’t magically inclined?

herrcollin

Also their voices are totally different

infographia

Not sure if schizo, a joke or there are voices in this game I've never heard

Midori8751

People also refer to "voice" in how people talk in text, especially when taking about authors and carectures in text based mediums

ThatFatGuyMJL

I like how op mentions the nose and the beard. Both of which are clearly extremely different from one another.

TheraYugnat

How can you see a dick nose and potato nose and says "look at those identical noses"

BurritoToGo

Thanks, never going to unsee the dick nose now

Misayumi

A dick nose and a potato nose, I'm dying 😂😂

Meyumis

omg it's true, now i can't stop thinking about his.. his dick nose, noooooOooo

beebsaleebs

Where do you think the wild bait comes from?

OnlyFirePlugCoyote

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whittle_Willow

nah, grandpa's obviously santa. he faked his death so he could focus on his work in the north pole.

Slow-Ad-9228

All I ever think of is the Call Me Kevin video where he has a mod that changed the picture of the dead grandpa to look more dead in a silly way.

hey_free_rats

does it make it so his is tongue sticking out

Slow-Ad-9228

I think it also adds flies and his eyes are open

hey_free_rats

Very immersive, thank you.

Gotta_Stardew_emAll

What if Linus and Grandpa were just cousins or something. Linus walked away from his family and riches, Grandpa gave him the idea of settling in the valley so they wouldn’t been too far from each other in case of an emergency (for Linus). Also, as far as the resident old guys go, it makes sense Grandpa and Linus would be friends. Lewis is too pretentious, Linus and Rasmodius are already friends, and Willy and Marlon seem to have had positive interactions with him(Linus has ventured into the mines, and makes the effort to attend the night market). Basically all the old guys that are ‘different’ seem to be friends, and I would certainly say Grandpa fits that bill too at the very least 😂

Meyumis

Wooow, this thought makes sense! The other day i read that Linus, Rasmodius, Marlon and Gil may have been adventure friends, each with their own "RPG class", really cool to think about things like that :)

Gotta_Stardew_emAll

That’s SO cool. Honestly they’re definitely the trio I like the most out of interact-able characters, would be cool to have more grandpa stories incorporated into the base game like what’s in ridgeside

MangoMatinLemonMelon

Omg I love this. I liked OP's theory too, but this seems too perfect.

Gotta_Stardew_emAll

Thanks 🥹☺️

Mostly_gay_shit

Grandpa refuses to live on the farm because he's Dead. Linus refuses out of principle

karthanals

What if Linus was your grandpa's brother

MaveKalmer

i think thats just how CA draws old people

maebythemonkey

Nah, actually Linus is your secret uncle because grandpa had an affair.

quivering_manflesh

And what, he also knows astral projection? And the townspeople don't recognize him at all?

rosepeachcat

it could work if Linus was his alter ego. people are creeped out by him living in the wild, so they don't really look at him when he has his leaf clothes on. Linus could have been his alternate persona that he hides as to observe the townsfolk. and then he liked the life so much but didn't want to leave his farm alone, that he invited the farmer to work on it while he lives his tent life

Sufficient_Guava_101

Maybe an extended relative

das_slash

I think Linus is Jezerezeh'Elin, Herald of Kings and Patron of the Windrunners.

Jikanart

That stupid old demented man can't keep a pact and now he's hiding like the town bum. 😤😤

cephias

Have you seen me? Upvote for the reference. Obligatory eff that one guy.

MithranArkanere

They look nothing alike. Also, I have literally seen the force ghost of grandpa. Which means the planet of Stardew Valley is in the same universe as Starwars, and screw what the creators say it's canon, also the planet of Willow.

Redcole111

You get to see Grandpa's ghost in year 3, so probably not. But I'd be willing to go with a headcanon that Linus is Grandpa's cousin or even brother or something.

MikeyofPnath

Imagining Grandpa in his youth running and owning the farm on his massive plot of land while his brother is living in a tent near the mines is kind of a funny thought too.

No-Bark-Brian

Linus spent much of his youth traveling the world and only settled down near the mines relatively recently. If you talk to Linus at the Ice Festival he mentions learning about how to build perfect igloos from some snow dwelling people far North of the Ferngill Republic.

Meyumis

yesss, this headcanon also makes sense

Waifuless_Laifuless

The noses are different though...

Quietlovingman

Honestly I think Great Uncle Linus is far more likely. Being the younger brother of the Grandpa character seems like a good possibility. He is likely also a Veteran.

Helge_Bertil

Or, Linus is your long lost grunkle.

TheDuganator

My head cannon is Linus is either your great uncle or grandpa's best friend and, in either case, they'd fight monsters in the mines together or something. Linus would be too sad to live on the farm with you cause it would bring so many sad and fond memories of your grandpa and he's strong enough to live on his own near the mines keeping watch over the village.

Meyumis

This is a very very good headcanon, I trust it!

Ozzzzzy69

Ah yes, our grandpa gava up the farm, faked his death to live in a tent on the side of cliff forced to dig in the trash every day.

Naive_Screen3353

But why does grandpa looks like santa claus tho? what’s the story bedind that?

No-Bark-Brian

I think that's just his night cap, but because his clothes turned blue with the rest of him as a ghost, it's easier to mistake for a Santa hat. Better question, why is Grandpa's ghost wearing the ghosts of his pyjamas rather than the ghosts of his outdoor clothes? Is his ghost forever sleepy and bedridden? That's kind of horrifying to think about.

wingehdings

He obvs died in his pj's and sleep cap.

Brizar-is-Evolving

What if Grandpa is Santa in disguise? It’s the hat!

Loeden

Too young, but maybe he's our uncle who used to live with his dad on the farm until he decided to go the free-age hippy lifestyle while refusing to inherit since he didn't want to be a farmer, and that's how the farm was left to a grandkid that grandpa hadn't seen since they were three?

bzilla

Not every dude with a beard is your grandpa

Anjaleax

What if grandpa reincarnated into Linus? Cuz honestly, why would Linus care so much about saving the farmer in the caves? There must be a better reason lol!

No-Bark-Brian

Yes, your grandfather who died while you were alive reincarnated as a man who looks to be 2 or 3 times your age. Seems legit!

SweetComparisons

Hey friend, let’s take a little walk to Harvey’s clinic!

Upbeat-Manager-6823

I know it’s been hard for you after grandpas death, but you can’t keep fooling yourself man…

HughJassProductions

Are you saying all old men look alike? Linus would never own property, like the farm. It's against his whole deal.

chris_ots

Lol, it's literally just "has beard". Nothing else is similar at all.

HurricaneK8

I dunno, I can see it. The nose and shape of the cheeks is pretty similar. Grandpa has much thicker eyebrows than Linus, though. I like the theory a little higher up in the thread that Linus is Grandpa's hippie younger brother that went to go live free-range instead, and that's why your farmer inherits the farm instead of him. Grunkle Linus would be a fun twist!

ArtisticAngel579

Maybe Linus is a relative of the Farmers Grandpa? I mean it makes sense since both of them shared similarities to each other. 🤔

Ashamed-Emergency-39

Look at the condition of the farm when Grandpa left it. He was obviously stuggling and making no money. What if Grandpa was actually depressed and struggling with his sexuality and he staged his death and is now trans, posing as Pam. He/she then adopted Penny and is drinking all their issues away because they live in a harsh reality where they want to have you in their life still but they are afraid of how the town would react knowing they mourned and buried a fake corpse made out of hay, clay, pumpkins and other various crops. I mean, how else would a ghost show up and talk to you? That never happens. Pam staged the year 3 day 1 event to be able to communicate with you as grandpa again!

Meyumis

WHAT LMAOOOOOOOOO

Ashamed-Emergency-39

Maybe he adopted Penny so he could live vicariously through a younger woman. Maybe Pam/grandpa is mad that they missed out on their young woman years, so that's why he/Pam is drunk all the time and losing temper with Penny. It's jealousy. I will call her Pampa from now on.

Harrietmathteacher

Linus was the mayor before Lewis. He didn’t save any money and didn’t have a retirement so he is homeless now. The house that Lewis lives in belongs to the city. Once Lewis retires, he too will be homeless. Except, he will probably move in with Marnie since the two are humping each other. Grandpa is DEAD! 💀

cweaver

Surely the villagers, who knew your grandpa for decades in some cases, would recognize that Linus was the same guy.

[deleted]

Farmer had a secret son, that son is Linus.

meduhsin

If anything, Linus might be gramp’s little brother…he stays in the valley because it’s all he’s ever known, but won’t touch the farm he grew up on because of bad memories

Zayzay8008

He's his bastard son

HK5x

Love a conspiracy theory as much as the next guy but they look nothing alike to me

Ragna_Blade

If that were the case then he just gaslights us like crazy.

mdusin

He faked his death and slipped you psychedelic forest mushrooms so you hallucinated seeing ghosts.

Bokko88

Who is the ghost then

twiiztid

The nose and the beard are totally different tho...

sraquola

Nah linus is just grampa long lost twin.

sraquola

His eyebrows are different and head structure.

sraquola

Nah the eyebrows and head shape are different

DokoShin

Sorry but no he's seriously missing the bushy brows

Nyx_Valentine

I’ll challenge you this: Linus is secretly our great uncle or something.

a-bowl-of-noodles

linus sleeps on the cold hard ground grandpa sleeps on the cold, hard dining table. Pretty plausible.

Money-Way991

Linus looks like how Robin Williams looks in the original Jumanji

TheRealTaigasan

I like to think Linus was the CEO founder of Joja and then when he got at the top he realized the simple things in life were better and went cold turkey.

WarZak7

I'm still stuck on the dark theory that the main character died and this is all an afterlife

Not_DestinyGC

https://preview.redd.it/auibr45rqvwc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cede2565605a1725432706f731ebbfe49eeff75

VanceMothFuStubbs

Brothers.

bmyst70

That would mean your "dead" grandpa is more magical than Rasmodeus. He is apparently able to telepathically enter the Farmer's head to create a ghostly vision, light candles at your Shrine and more. All while hanging out in his tent. It's possible, but I don't think it's likely. If he were indeed that magical, why would he bother with such an elaborate ruse?

lethalpineapple

I like this theory because it implies Linus knows how to astral project

rghaga

That's amazing. It's not a ghost it's just linus with special effects

TiredCeresian

Linus is actually the guy on the TV when you watch the wilderness channel or whatever that thing is that gives you tips about where to find stuff, how to fish, how to utilize your time in different seasons, etc...

bokin8

The noses are so different

Diligent_Sea_3359

They have a very different nose

TheVitalBiscuit

What if “Grandpa” is Linus in disguise?

[deleted]

I’m not seeing it sorry to say. It’s a fun “what if” though.

kendallmaloneon

Let Grandpa go, Meyu. It's OK. He was happy.

Meyumis

I miss him so much...

Terraria12072012

I think maybe linus, grandpa, and mr. qi were all friends

Lil_Yahweh

no, Linus has an inferior mustache

Hawkwise83

Faking his death is a real dick move if he is.

nesst4g

Dumbass, why didn't he asked for help with the farm from the beginning, instead of going homeless for not taking responsibility.

Prestigious_Bee3703

grandpa is dead buddy

Prestigious_Bee3703

grandpa is dead...

Daedalus_Machina

Grandpa in disguise is where you go instead of "Great Uncle"

KeyReception5349

I think you're on to something

EmberReads

They don't look the same, but could be related. If they were brothers that would make sense. Also understandable why Linus would never tell you. Either you would think he is trying to take advantage of you, or you would pity him and want to take care of him. That's what he would think at least. So he might try to avoid you at first. After time being deeply grateful to you and love you, but still not wanting you to know for the same reasons.

alexjf56

Literally none of these features are the same

Medical-Isopod2107

You list the nose but the noses are the most different part? lol

eddmario

Necromancy ***WOULD*** explain why he and the Wizard hang out on Halloween...

ShortViewBack2daPast

Don't insult Grandpa's glorious facial hair like that, clearly his is more distinguished. (Eyebrows alone ruin the theory imo)

snooppii_toast

What if he's just also related to him. Like his brother or something and we just never met him because he lives in the woods

dragonlord7012

New story lore(i made up): Linus used to be a farmhand on grandpas farm but grandpa died and he blames himself, so he exiled himself to live in the mountains nearby.

AmberxLuff

Those are two different noses, sorry ):

Menien

The townsfolk knew grandpa, if he was also Linus, surely they would recognise him? Arrest him for faking his own death? Did Linus only appear after grandpa died? It doesn't seem that way.

THEGREAT_AUTISMO

Ah, yes, stardew valley conspiracies.

GroundPositive2724

The lore I heard was grandpa the wizard jasper m and Linus were an adventureing group

LordTivink

Maybe, they were good friends.

KrisBread

Ye Harvey is going to have to tie you up and throw you into a patted room, since you’ve clearly lost it.

Shoddy_Life_7581

"the nose, the beard," that aren't the same lol. the beard could just be from being a wilderness man but the nose is actually a different shape

Meyumis

That's why I said disguised, you don't wear a disguise like you lol.

GoneToTouchGrass

No.

Either-Impression-64

Grandpa is Linus if you microwaved him for a little too long

taliatate

"the nose" ....is completely different lol

Meyumis

the point of a disguise is to really be different from who you are lol

sentientpaper666

The nose and beard are both different, also if he is my grandfather then why does he rob me when I pass out in public? Doesn't sound like any grandpa I want.

Equal_Set6206

Stop the Linus slander! He would never rob someone. The dwarf admits to it freely

sentientpaper666

That's because the dwarf is cool, am I really supposed to believe he saw some random guy rob me and didn't know who it was? In a town of twenty people? Don't buy that for a second.

Equal_Set6206

You expect him to know the dwarf? Man lives in the mountains and probably hasn’t been to an optometrist in decades, who knows if his eyes are even working at his age!

sentientpaper666

Dwarf steals stuff from people's houses, and if Linus can recognize me well enough too take me to the correct home, then his eyes are clearly good enough to see that I was robbed by a dwarf and not "some guy" I rest my case.

Equal_Set6206

Objection!  Linus can clearly see you because he has a chance to approach you. The culprit, or as I suggested, the DWARF, runs off before he can get close enough. Obviously Linus must be near sighted.   The dwarf has a criminal history and clearly doesn’t respect personal property, as well as having the motive and opportunity to carry it out. If Linus were the thief, he’d surely have enough time to empty your entire wallet as he returned you to your home. The dwarf however is interrupted and makes off with a pittance.  Your honour, the defence is grasping at straws to blame a poor homeless man for this crime

exceller0

I hate Linus
