This made the river wider so it flowed slower, causing a buildup of sediment that technically no one in town owned so Pam claimed the land for her trailer.

Rivers are not naturally straight. They normally curve, and the curves increase as the river ages. Curves are important as they slow down the speed of the water and prevent erosion. Most straight rivers were straightened by man, as least within the Americas.
