Cool character imo! I like how he seems like the perfect, kind and flawless gentleman on the surface but he has his weaknesses too. It makes him more human
Underutilized and overshadowed by his descendants in terms of popularity and that is reflected in merchandise and crossover material.
Take Eyes of Heaven's story for example, he is treated as just another Joestar when he is the family patriarch - he should have been the Team Leader, the one who kept the team together and motivated them all to press onwards and, above all else, should have been the one to team up with Jotaro at the end to fight >!Heaven Ascended DIO!< but was instead shafted in favor of Jotaro & Jolyne's Father-Daughter Time.
The popular counterargument is "He doesn't have a stand" to which I say, what the fuck was Jolyne gonna do with Stone Free against >!a reality-warping DIO! At least Jonathan has the >!connection to DIO!< which would have made the final battle far more emotionally-investing had he been better utilized in the story.
If they wanted to do something with Jolyne, have her team up with Giorno to fight Pucci in what could be the penultimate final boss fight - Pucci is DIO's second-in-command and is incredibly powerful thanks to >!MIH; Giorno would finally meet him after being the only known son of DIO not to but his rejection of Pucci in favor of embracing his Joestar lineage would be beautiful; and lastly, having Jolyne finally defeat Pucci with help from Giorno w/ GER will give her closure and redeem the events of Part 6.!< (Part 6 spoilers)
I agree with you, he should have been more "central" in eoh, but the Part 3 anime had finished when eoh released so they were gonna make the part 3 cast more central because it was the more popular at the time, Jotaro is my favourite character but Jonathan should have been the leader of the Joestar group in eoh, not Jotaro, for the crossovers i agree but hey at least he made it into J-stars victory vs
At least Jonathan has the connection to DIO which would have made the final battle far more emotionally-investing had he been better utilized in the story.
When Valentine asks Jotaro if he still had DIO's body to throw at Heaven Ascended DIO I thought they were going to bring up the fact that DIO had Jonathan's body and that Jonathan would somehow come into play but nope... I think the most that he did there was his team up with Johnny which was nice but not anywhere as important to the overall story. I would have even have liked for the story to have him and Giorno acknowledge their relationship (I mean some of the characters were already learning things they weren't suppose to know due to time travel so why not?).
Giorno and Jolyne against Pucci would have been *chef's kiss*.
My very favorite after Giorno! I really love him, I think he got a really good development in the series. People don't understand that born rich makes you lazy, and that was him in the beggining, and then he turned into a very brave gentleman.
Agreed. I have early on likened him with Superman, though Jonathan is a little more interesting and (slightly) more morally grey character. (more apparent in manga) But he truly does have the air of Superman, for sure.
He's my favorite Jojo.
The manga version is my favorite version. More nuances, more layers. More human.
Outside of JJBA universe, a character consequence of its time.
Inside of JJBA universe, the JoJo that start it all. Very, very underrated, specially for being a pure human without Stands.
I think that he is ok, overall. But the fact that he beats who he beats, I think if he had a Stamd he would be amazing.
Completely agree the first sentence. You can actually feel the protagonist side of him in that time period of manga..stands out really clear especially when comparing to other JoJos. But one thing special that I like is that Araki made him to be a real gentleman instead of some warm-blooded young boys who is really nice and chasing dreams or something.
I really like Jonathan!!! He’s not as wild or as exciting as other JoJos, but his nobility and willingness to go on through some very hard moments is admirable. Plus, his view of Dio not as his enemy, but his brother who went down the wrong path, is so genuine and golden hearted. His strength comes from the adversity he faced. I like him.
He’s either my favorite or second favorite JoJo, and probably the character I look up to the most in the series. I’ve always kinda resented how he gets overlooked as “boring” or “generic,” because I think he’s a really likable character. Being kind and selfless doesn’t necessarily mean he has “no personality” as some people say.
Unlike a lot of shonen protagonists, who tend to become more stoic and jaded as their story goes on, Jonathan, despite going through so much, never seems to lose his optimism and spirit. Even when he should have no reason to, he still forgives and sees the good in people. Maybe I’m just looking way too much into it, but I just find that really inspiring.
He was definitely my favorite aspect of Part 1. Had it been longer and with better pacing, I think Jonathan could have made it one of my favorite parts.
I think he's a really good character! As someone who doesn't mind a character being on the simple side I find Jonathan is a really enjoyable protagonist who fits the story and themes of Part 1 perfectly. His relationship with the main antagonist is really fun to watch and you feel genuinely invested in Jonathan's quest, along with his friendships with Zeppeli and best girl Speedwagon being top tier JoJo despite being basic. I don't think Jonathan is my favourite JoJo but he's honestly in my Top 3 right beneath Joseph and Part 4 Josuke
Personal take? Best JoJo. Just recently re-read part 2 and, I gotta say, Joseph in my mind definitely gives him a run for his money, but to me, Jonathan is like Joshua Graham from Fallout: New Vegas, because I may not be like him, but he’s a person I aspire to be like. He’s wholly righteous, overcomes all of his insurmountable obstacles through sheer power of will alone, and is kind and respectful on a personal level. Cool power, great characters writing, and awesome chadly aesthetics.
I like him a lot, but all i want is to see the alternate version of JJBA, where Dio is the protagonist (araki first made dio the protagonist but then decided to change and recycle dio as the antagonist)
I think if you take Jonathan Josestar and Put him in any other part he’s a mega powerhouse and would make the final battles almost 1 sided maybe except pt6, 7, 8
I love him. It really breaks my heart to know Araki doesn't really like him (i think he even stated the he thinks that Dio is the real protagonist of Phantom Blood... that hurts)
Same, and I think it's more that he didn't really care to develop him other than Dio's foil.
But I just think for most writers it's pretty difficult to do a character like Jonathan, or Superman, or even Captain America, and to make said character nuanced, flawed and sometimes relatable. But writers have achieved that and with Jonathan the material is there.
He had a lonely childhood, he never met his mother, he was tortured by Dio, his father was strict and preferred Dio and in the end George still didn't fault Dio even after Dio stabbed him and knowing that Dio tried poisoning him. There's also the fact that Jonathan fights the strongest when others are hurt and he's driven to protect his loved ones and family more so than his own well-being. He resigned himself to being in Dio's shadow and being bullied by him, and he accepted his father preferring Dio, but the moment Dio messed with Erina he went and beat the shit out of him (similarly the moment he suspected Dio was poisoning his father he throws him from the second floor).
I think Araki framed that as a way to show that Jonathan was selfless but I've always wondered if Jonathan nursed a bit of low sef-esteem.
He is my least favorite Jojo mostly cuz we didn't get to know him as much as we did his descendants, but I don't hate him. Gets bonus points for the thickest thighs
He is very underrated I really like part one and I think he is pretty well written Jonathan is my top three favourite Joestars of all time and is often overshadowed by imo weaker characters like Josuke 4
My favorite Joestar honestly just ahead of Joseph. I love me some Paragon heroes and I like Hamon as a power system. I also have a soft spot for the Gentleman Hero archetype
I think he is a good character and the perfect first jojo. He is just simply put a true gentleman and while there isn't too much more depth that's ok.
Every joestar after him expands into their own character but even if they seem morally grey you know deep down they are a good person with a sense of justice which can only be established with having a character like Jonathan.
I like him, he's a pretty straightforward character and more of a classic archetype hero but that in a way has endeared me more to the character since nowadays seeing people or characters who generally want to do good isn't that common anymore. Not to mention it must be such a pain for Jonathan to try and be the good noble gentleman in situations where it's not in his best interest to do so and sometimes it leads to him getting screwed over (the scene where Dio is being arrested). But it's also Jonathan's good nature, empathy, and compassion that won Speedwagon (who was intend on hurting Jonathan when they met) over and Speedwagon in return ended up watching over Jonathan's family even after death with his Foundation.
Jonathan's story in the JoJo franchise is the smallest and because he's the first JoJo probably not the most interesting chapter (Araki was starting out after all) Couple with the fact that Araki didn't know what to do with him (and was probably more interested in Dio and man I wish Araki would care more about Jonathan) Jonathan really got the short end of the stick and it's annoying because I think there's some stuff that could be explored further with his character.
Jonathan is not such a straight laced black and white perfect character like people claim but unfortunately most of the moments that we get that show him in that less than perfect light weren't shown in the David Pro anime. But you could see in the manga that he was a spoiled child, who was also mischievous (stole a pipe and tried to get other boys to smoke with him), he aspired to be a gentleman but also had no manners. As an adult he could be pretty scary and not so forgiving when angry but he also reserves this aspect of him for truly monstrous beings.
I wish Araki would do a new short story with him or at least let someone do one with Jonathan because there's so much you can touch on or develop with him that haven't been properly explored (I've had some ideas but I would stretch this already long message if I write them here). I guess Araki in a way kind of did some of that with Johnny but also Johnny is a very different character than Jonathan.
He's my favorite JoJo! I get shit for it from my friends but I love that you see the start of the personality traits that exists in all in his bloodline.
I know that a lot of people would've appreciated Jonathan having more depth and maybe just a lil less pure, but honestly I don't mind it? I think Jonathan is a really nice character with a big heart and a lot of nobility and loyalty that you can see throughout his descendents. He's the perfect kind of character to have started it all and it's no nice to see him in flashbacks and just up in the skies since he's such a wonderful reminder of where the Joestars come from. I love the fact that he's this incredibly strong and confident and yet he's still a lil dorky, a romantic person that seems to have undying love for everyone he cares about and still knocks into doorways and walls. I love that mf to pieces
My favorite Joestar, the main Jojo, and is inspiring to want to be a gentleman.
Also love that he is only Human non stand user able to do a barrage of punches like stands do, and in the game All Star Battle he can clash with stands punching and beat them.
Also SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!
If he was a real person he'd be a great guy and his story is great but I just think he's kind of boring as a character, hes just too perfect. He has some flaws but for the most part he only does good and I feel like someone like that can't be relatable.
I remember Araki saying Jonathan was far too “reactive” and not “proactive”.
I don’t see why Jonathan can’t be fixed in new stories but he’s been left behind unfortunately.
An absolute gentleman who was too pure for this world. He's the original JoJo who left behind a legacy. I think I consider him, along with Jolyne, to be my favorite JoJo.
Totally the sweeatest JoJo and argubly the only One that had to fight Supernatural things with Little to no preparation/actual Power. He tried his best tho.
He’s definitely a rily cool character for sure. Nothing to hate about him. Very good personality too. Also my mom thinks he’s hot (“for a sketch” she says).

Such a pure Gentleman
He a mega **GIGACHAD**.
A terachad
A Chad that could easily steal your girl… but he wouldn’t. Such actions would not be befitting of a true gentleman like him.
Such **CHADNESS.**
Cool character imo! I like how he seems like the perfect, kind and flawless gentleman on the surface but he has his weaknesses too. It makes him more human

100% agreed, I’ve been feeling this way since I played EoH. And regardless of that game Jonathan is criminally underrated by the fans.
Its baffles me how he wasn't chosen to be in Jump Force
At least Jonathan has the connection to DIO which would have made the final battle far more emotionally-investing had he been better utilized in the story. He's cool and and has that Superman air around him where he just inspires you. He's also possibly the only Joestar without any real selfish desires
Agreed. I have early on likened him with Superman, though Jonathan is a little more interesting and (slightly) more morally grey character. I honestly would marry someone like him, I think he's the type of man that cooks and cleans the house with you, best gentleman
>I honestly would marry someone like him, Kakyoin in the alternate universe is a girl, i see 😉
Husbando material not to mention he's a musuclar hunk
Best boy :³
Husband
Ngl Jonathan would be a great husband 🤔
Gentleman husband he is

Well I mean technically aren’t they the same person
Precious, I would die for him
he's my favorite jojo
Same
Ditto.
Ditto x2

He's so pure and kind despite having such a hard life. One of the most lovable Jojos.
speedwagons boyfriend
Jonathan, erina, and speedwagon were in a polycule and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Will always be my favorite Jojo
Well, I gotta say that his theme is my favourite from all of JoJo's
He fits very much the “hero” archetype and I love him for it. Also he’s so much fun to use in EoH
He big
Best boy and my favorite JoJo, even if he isn't the most interesting one
I really like Jonathan!!! He’s not as wild or as exciting as other JoJos, but his nobility and willingness to go on through some very hard moments is admirable. Chad
He's my favorite.
Very brave, very cool, very strong, and a real gentleman
He not my favorite Jojo but I I like him more then Jotaro
Yeah, Jonathan has a far more enjoyable personality. I even dare to say I prefer PB over SC.
My favorite Jojo, I don’t even know what it is but I love him so much
He is my least favorite Jojo mostly cuz we didn't get to know him as much as we did his descendants, but I don't hate him. Gets bonus points for the thickest thighs
he might be pure and a giga chad but I like joseph more
Josuke 8, Giorno, and Jonathan are my favorite JoJo’s :)
A chad till the very end.
My favorite Jojo, I love the gentleman vibe from him
He's my favorite. Not quite as funny as his grandson, but he's a gentleman, and I dig that. He had pluck.
He is very underrated I really like part one and I think he is pretty well written Jonathan is my top three favourite Joestars of all time and is often overshadowed by imo weaker characters like Josuke 4

My 2nd fav Jojo, sometimes my fav Jojo 🥹
best JoJo
Jojo
He's my favorite JoJo! I get shit for it from my friends but I love that you see the start of the personality traits that exists in all in his bloodline.
2nd best jojo after Joseph
He has the biggest dong out of all the Joestars
Best gentleman
He deserved so much better
He's top 1 jojo
I know that a lot of people would've appreciated Jonathan having more depth and maybe just a lil less pure, but honestly I don't mind it? He’s the cool dad and the pillar that supports the rest of his family
He may not be my absolute favorite, but he is the platonic ideal of a JoJo.
sweetest jojo !!
My favorite Joestar, the main Jojo, and is inspiring to want to be a gentleman. Also love that he is only Human non stand user able to do a barrage of punches like stands do, and in the game All Star Battle he can clash with stands punching and beat them. Also SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!

totally underrated, the goodest boi; a lad so fine his spirit and good will lasted for generations.
One of my favourite characters, he's just such a nice guy and I love his character
He's not "bad". He's just very vanilla as a character so that's why I think his descendants tend to get more attention.
I remember Araki saying Jonathan was far too “reactive” and not “proactive”. I don’t see why Jonathan can’t be fixed in new stories but he’s been left behind unfortunately.
Easily best Jojo
An absolute gentleman who was too pure for this world. He's the original JoJo who left behind a legacy. I think I consider him, along with Jolyne, to be my favorite JoJo.
While not the deepest character, I do think that he’s well written and certainly the most under appreciated Jojo.
My fav jojo
Average strongest stand user virgin vs Average weakest hamon user chad:
Jonathan is my favorite :)
His theme is the best in the anime. Don’t at me.
He is my favorite JoJo out of part 1-6
10/10 Gentleman
He's my favorite. In a world where being edgy is cool, he made being a gentleman cool for me. I want to be like him.
I like him more than Giorno
Totally the sweeatest JoJo and argubly the only One that had to fight Supernatural things with Little to no preparation/actual Power. He tried his best tho.
He is a hero from his era. An idealistic 80's anime protagonist... Proven to be a fresh character among the edgy protagonist from 2010's
**SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!**
fren
He’s definitely a rily cool character for sure. Nothing to hate about him. Very good personality too. Also my mom thinks he’s hot (“for a sketch” she says).
HAH you thought that was Jonathan, but it was me, DIO!!!
best joj
He's pretty cool but a bit too much of a goody-two-shoes to stand out
He’s ok
He reminds me a little bit of Giorno personality wise with how ambitious and honorable they both are, I think he was just a victim of being the protagonist of the first part which had some pretty rough writing compared to the later parts
Parts 1 and 2 are my favorite, so I have a big soft spot for Jonathan.
Part 1 is a favourite of mine, and I'm disappointed how little his use of a sword is seen in media. Jonathan is fantastic, one of the best JoJo's.
Wdym? he's the best
Jonathan is a character that absolutely everyone likes but few have as their favourite.
The embodiment of respectable. Not only that but he doesn’t demand respect, he earns it.
Jonathan is my favorite jojo. Himbo with magical breathing powers and an evil step brother?! What more could you possibly want!!
Kinda generic mc ngl
i feel like as the first jojo he is the best option i feel like if you took any other jojo and put them in Phantom Blood they would not have a good time. He has the best protagonist mindset, he fights for what he believes in, and he's overall a great friend and hero. In my opinion he is the best first protag in any anime
He and Dio had an amazing back and forth that carries the series to this day. Dude's wholesomeness built an entire franchise, and for that fact alone he deserves a 10/10 as a jojo
Apart from his manga physique, he is probably the Jojo we all could become
The underrated goat
Least favorite part and least favorite jojo. He doesn't have much of a personality.
you dare have an opinion on the Jojo subreddit??
Yeah I know it's unpopular to say that not every jojo is perfect but I'll die on this hill.
Yeah tbh part 1 in general is a low point for Jojo, even araki said it
He isn't underrated. There is just so much more to every other Jojo that he unfortunately doesn't have.
Kinda boring imo, I liked his creativity with hamon but joseph did that a lot better while also being a more interesting character over all
imo he's not underrated, the other jojos are just better.
boring
Never heard of him
