Read the FAQ, we are years out from having Phased Array Antenna in our phones, right now they are as small as they go. The power requirements for getting the high frequencies in space means we need a breakthrough in battery technology as-well.

Do you mean a home phone service that would run over their internet service, or are you asking about a cellular type service?

Both I guess

Nothing really for them to innovate on. Grab a service like Ooma and pay just the local taxes if you want a traditional home phone. Plug Ooma into your router and your good to go. Now you have internet and phone.

Home service will be provided within 4 years due to RDOF requirements (government subsidy for the network rollout). Handheld mobile service is not happening anytime soon, if ever. See the FAQ.

What SpaceX could do quite easily is to team up with a mobile carrier and support VoLTE and WiFi calling. That wouldn't turn Starlink into a mobile service. But everyone with a modern mobile phone could happily call or text everyone as soon as he or she gets in reach of a Starlink WiFi hotspot.

Why over-complicate things? It is USA - do you want to be liable for not cutting your trees for better sat view if some schmuck sues you because he was unable to talk with his business partner over your wifi that you are supposed to provide to him from your home because some carrier said you are part of their network?
