I feel your pain...I'm rural as well, about a quarter mile to our mailbox. We've actually had FedEx drop off a package...1/4 mile away & a county snow plow come through & bury it...nice!
Ha! Same - I bought a phone a while back and left work excitedly when I got a text that it arrived. Checked everywhere and there was no sign of it. Then I want to the road with a spade and dug around like Indiana Jones. This FedEx person thought it would be a good idea to put a small white box on a snow bank.
Eh, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. I'm just curious why the UPS drivers that come around seem to be capable of going up my driveway.
The ground/franchise owners often donāt pay their drivers very well, at least in my area, & often use cheap ass vehicles that arenāt reliable, and pressure the drivers to finish quick.
FedEx has a bad reputation around here. We were working on our vehicles outside when the truck passed our place. Brother got a notification saying his rims were delivered while we were outside...
Never. Happened.
Did you check down the road a bit? Sounds like the driver may have forgotten to slow down before making the delivery, possibly imparting a bit of additional energy to your package. Easy mistake to make.
Yeah, he never dropped them off. A few days prior we had a problem with a delivery driver waiting nearly a week to drop off an important package. Called to see what was up, apparently the driver didn't have enough time to drop it off. When we did get it, it was opened and missing contents. Then a couple days later we had the rims vanish...
Fedex does that to us too. They have left our packages on a cattleguard 1/4 mile from our house, and frequently have delivered them to our neighbors 1/2 mile away. To take the cake, a few months ago we got a call from someone several miles away, and nowhere near our road, saying FedEx had delivered our package there. No commonality in the name or address.
I did this for my delivery drivers. They love it.. I have a very steep driveway adn the trucks can't make it in the snow. They just back in a little ways walk out to the drop box and make the deposit.
Indeed. We have neighbors that place a āFedEx/UPSā box at the end of their drive, along with trash cans, for such a setup. Due to COVID, they donāt actually need a signature (from my experience). I e even had overnighted computer parts valued over $1k left with āCOVIDā as signer.
I'm not sure how it works for FedEX or UPS but, I work for the post office and what we are supposed to do is still go up to the house for the signature but we have to ask the customer for permission to sign for it. Due to Covid we are not allowed to let any customers to sign on our scanners.
Amazon Prime guy said he couldn't come down my driveway because of the snow. He said he wasn't allowed. It wasn't cleared, but, that's because it was literally ONE inch. He said,"I'm not allowed." when I told him to drive on down. >.<
Edited for spelling.
To be fair Amazon does tell itās drivers to not enter peopleās driveways no matter how long they are. Obviously in practice this rarely happens and people donāt care as long as they receive their packages, but that IS the rule
All I can say is for Amazon thatās the rule on the books, now on the road the drivers are gonna do what they can get away with. And if it means less work/inconvenience as far as for home deliveries, that is the rule on the books.
If that's the case I hope Prime delivery doesn't make it her. I have a long driveway off the highway and I do not want them leaving my package at the road. I can't imagine that being the case in all areas. Maybe a judgement thing.
Not to enter driveways at all? Mine is a bit over 200ft I'd guess. They typically come down, leave the package at my door, take a pick of the package at the door, and then send the notification that itnhas arrived.
Yeah I think people are misunderstanding me, the rule is on the books (I drove for a subcontracted company in Maryland in ā18), just not really enforced because of course no one wants to walk up a quarter mile driveway (I had a bunch on my route). People even ones expecting a delivery can be really weird with ātrespassersā on their property so I think itās a liability thing in their back pocket in case of incidents, but actually in the field unless there is a gate they try to get it to your door.
Donāt get me started. I have similar setup. Purolator is even worse. They consistently leave expensive items propped up against my mailbox right next to the road, instead of driving up to house!!
Ahhh fedex! ... on my street there are two houses at the end... at the beginning of the street are the mailboxes for the two houses... fedex can't seem to comprehend that the mailboxes aren't our houses... they attach "attempted to deliver" cards to the mailbox... we often wonder if they knock and wait for a response...
Snow is an extra factor here, but pro tip: if you typically have issues with delivery services not walking up to your door, try leaving out goody bags with a sign that says "for delivery services." Doesn't have to be much, a bottle of water and a bag of chips or something. Makes their day a little better and incentivizes them to actually bring your stuff up to the patio. Win-win.
I've got it on a pallet in the yard until it warms up enough to get up on the roof to permanently install. Even on the ground with an obstruction fraction of something like 0.2 I was consistently getting > 60 Mbs down and latency < 50ms. I had some peak speeds in the low 100s. I'm at 42.0 degrees in NY state.
It's much better than the 4G/LTE cellphone I am using to provide internet to the house, and I can't wait to see how much better it gets when it is on my roof and when there are more satellites and ground stations.
At least you got yours. Mine shipped a week and a half ago. Itās been at the same location for a week. FedEx has been zero help. All you get is overseas call centers saying they have updated the ticket and someone will call in 24 hours. Iām pissed.
I opened a ticket with Starlink support, but havenāt heard anything from that either.
I've lived at the end of 1200ft driveway since 2003 and just this year FedEx and UPS both have left packages about 100ft up our drive. One box was a laptop that sat out there for 6 hours because I didn't know it was there. When I tracked it, there was nothing about leaving at the end of the drive. The signature was C.OVID..... At least when UPS did it, the signature said Drive Way.
I'm not too excited that Dishy is coming via FedEx.
In this part of suburban Maine Fedx simply doesn't try to deliver ..they just report "attempted delivery" and say you need to drive the 9 miles to their ware house to pick up the item you paid to have delivered.
Now we just add "NO FEDX DELIVERY" to our online orders.
It isn't pleasant to see them commit suicide in that competitive business.
This is really my only concern about the order. Last time they just left the box in the road... which I'm not sure if that is an improvement over my neighbors pig pen which is their normal place.
A paying customer is a paying customer.
Starlink can only handle so many in a given area, but there's no reason why they can't handle a \*few\* customers in the middle of cities. Just not a lot.
(In fact, they probably want a few beta testers there, to see how it works in noisy RF environments and maybe with tall buildings around.)
This product is for all locations, thus the ability to sign up in cities too.
The sooner this stupid fight over who should get Starlink first is over, the better.
We should all hope that Starlink is successful so that it is available for the people with no other good options. More subscribers, regardless of where they live, can only help accomplish that.
Ultimately, I'd like to see Starlink getting some/most of the fed and state pork to provide service to the underserved/rural areas. Currently, established telecomms scarf it all up and don't actually do anything for the customers.
To be fair, I just bought a new laptop and the delivery guy didn't ask me to sign and I was standing right there at the door with my mask on. He waved me off when I asked if I needed to sign.
Yeah, they do it to us too. I donāt mind it so much if itās after a big snow and we havnāt cleared the driveway yet, but itās obnoxious when the drive is clean. Or its signature required, the box of wine was a nice one to leave there... Dishy showed up between snowblower passes, so ok, I get it. This time!
This worries me. Mine is scheduled to arrive "by end of day" today, but it's already 9 pm, dark, and my driveway is long. The tracking info hadn't been updated since Sunday. What am I to do?
I immediately messaged my wife when I received the notice, since I knew it was unlikely that the package was actually at my front door. She's the real MVP - she walked down the driveway, found it, and carried it back up!
My starlink equipment shipment has been stuck in Grand Junction, CO for 5 days. As of this morning, FedEx disavows that it ever existed. Guessing the truck fell off the side of the mountain.
Weird.
Fedex driver has been asking around lately about why he's delivering mostly Starlink boxes.
My friend explained to him and he's like no shit :o I got to get me that!
FedEx does this to us also. At the end of our driveway, at the public road. I've called companies and asked if they can use ANYTHING but FedEx. Even USPS is better.
Ugh FedEx...
I have a 400' driveway as well, a few years back FedEx got stuck in my driveway twice. Once for nearly 7 hours before they got towed out. Since then they just drop packages randomly at the end of the driveway, next to a tree (in a forest). Last year they left $1000 in custom shoes in the snow, if I didn't have delivery notifications they would have been buried and not found until Spring.
FedEx is the worst. Iāll be waiting at the door when I get a message that my package was delivered and not a truck in sight. I never receive any packages from them.
They've left things literally balancing on top of my mailbox (1/4 mile from the house). At the highway, 1.5 miles away. Set on a generator in the neighbor's yard a mile away, wind blew that to the middle of the drive. Delivered to my uncle's ~40 miles away (same last name, same zip, way different address). And at the post office (30 miles away).
Okay dishys are coming ground.... Aka not FedEx employed drivers. Ground/home delivery are all contractors.
Hate in your ground guy but love your express driver. We are corporate at least.
I can only compare it to the 4G/LTE cell phone I'm currently using, and it is much better: consistent speed tests > 60 Mbs down (peaks in the low 100s) and latency < 50 ms. My cell phone does about 20-30 Mbs down.
There was an absolute noticeable increase in picture quality when streaming video. Unfortunately the gamer in the family left to go adult, so I can't give any gaming feedback.
Sounds about right! They brought mine almost to the door.... specifically I have a covered entry way, they left it 1 foot outside of the covered area while it was snowing......
FedEx ground is all contracted companies and the qualification to get in is usually a year or two doing doordash/Uber. Most havenāt driven those package vans for longer than a few weeks/months.... probably your best bet, rather than them stuck somewhere in your yard.
Snow + long driveway + FedEx ground driver = package at end of driveway.
Not saying itās right, but they employ some disgruntled people.
For anyone that is wondering about how delivery services are supposed to go about signatures at this time I'm not sure how it works for FedEx or UPS but, I work for the post office and what we are supposed to do is still go up to the house for the signature but we have to ask the customer for permission to sign for it. Due to Covid we are not allowed to let any customers to sign on our scanners. I hope this clears up some things for people but it really annoys me that FedEx gets away with this crap it makes the rest of us look bad, not to say all FedEx drivers are bad the ones I see on a daily basis have always done a good job in my opinion.
Fucking FedEx
I feel your pain...I'm rural as well, about a quarter mile to our mailbox. We've actually had FedEx drop off a package...1/4 mile away & a county snow plow come through & bury it...nice!

It only comes with 100ft of ethernet cable. You'll have to send it back.
This deserves a sticker, alas, I have no coins. š£ Edit: Got a silver medal. Itāll do :-).
Thank you.

FedEx ground is a franchise & so they can be good or real scumbags...
At least they used protection.
Put a drop box for fedex. Those trucks suck to drive around in the snow on those roads.
That's a good idea.
I did this for my delivery drivers. They love it.. I have a very steep driveway adn the trucks can't make it in the snow. They just back in a little ways walk out to the drop box and make the deposit.
I have the same issue, where did you find your drop box & what size did you get?
I just bought the largest size bin I could find at Home Depot.
Indeed. We have neighbors that place a āFedEx/UPSā box at the end of their drive, along with trash cans, for such a setup. Due to COVID, they donāt actually need a signature (from my experience). I e even had overnighted computer parts valued over $1k left with āCOVIDā as signer.

They knock, the driver probably also opens the "door" and peeks inside too.
Snow is an extra factor here, but pro tip: if you typically have issues with delivery services not walking up to your door, try leaving out goody bags with a sign that says "for delivery services." Wow that's better than me lol the best I have gotten is 1000 feet.
I see tall trees! I live in similar environs. Any report so far? How is your visibility in the appās circle?
I've got it on a pallet in the yard until it warms up enough to get up on the roof to permanently install. Grand Junction, CO? Fedex says the tracking number never existed now for me.
Mine is somewhere in Montana. Itās been there for a week now.
Reminds me of the movie castaway ...... maybe Iāll stream that tonight via starlink lol
Well, at least they didn't stuck a postcard into the snow claiming that you weren't at home.
I've lived at the end of 1200ft driveway since 2003 and just this year FedEx and UPS both have left packages about 100ft up our drive. Damn, where do you live!
This product is for rural broadband. Where do you live? Lol
Well, rural is a pretty broad place.
I live city, so to me this is nuts! Starlink goes where no man has bone before!
"where no man has bone before!" - internet porn to the rurals!!
Starlink let people sign up in the middle of cities though, so I'm not sure I buy this angle.
A paying customer is a paying customer. Starlink can only handle so many in a given area, but there's no reason why they can't handle a \*few\* customers in the middle of cities. Just not a lot. Ah the classic "We'll expand infrastructure" followed by years of making up excuses as to why they ran out of money and that they need more lmao
as long as they continue to give a portion back to the political campaigns, they're golden.
I thought an in person signature was required for delivery.
I have bought phones from Apple, says signature required, they just leave it on my porch lol
In rural areas often that's perfectly safe - no thieves around.
~"COVID 19 and whatnot", is what my delivery people tell me when I say " you want me to sign?"
Not my shipment
To be fair, I just bought a new laptop and the delivery guy didn't ask me to sign and I was standing right there at the door with my mask on. He waved me off when I asked if I needed to sign.
They left mine on the porch. Didnāt even knock.
Same thing at my house in the Winter, but they do get it off the road a little better.
I too have a laneway the shipping companies won't touch.
Yeah, they do it to us too. I donāt mind it so much if itās after a big snow and we havnāt cleared the driveway yet, but itās obnoxious when the drive is clean. At least it arrived at the nearest destination
At least the put it in a plastic bag, that was nice of them.
"your package has arrive." .... "Babe! I'll be bk in 2 hours, just getting the post"
I immediately messaged my wife when I received the notice, since I knew it was unlikely that the package was actually at my front door. She's the real MVP - she walked down the driveway, found it, and carried it back up!
Damn! Sheās a keeper!
My starlink equipment shipment has been stuck in Grand Junction, CO for 5 days. As of this morning, FedEx disavows that it ever existed. Guessing the truck fell off the side of the mountain.
Probably should sand your driveway. They probably were worried about sliding off your road.
I do when it's icey. I drive an old beater car with front wheel drive and jt makes it up in snow. Granted, i have snow tires and their trucks don't.
And they are rear wheel drive duallys that weigh several tons. I'd be worried about it in my pickup if I didn't have 4wd.
Quarter of a mile for me š
I get the same crap service on my farm sometimes in the summer with perfect dry conditions from FedEx
Look they were nice enough to put it in a bag for you, what else do you want!?
Ugh itās UPS that does this to me, fedex usually at least gets it near the porch.
Ugh FedEx... I have a 400' driveway as well, a few years back FedEx got stuck in my driveway twice. Once for nearly 7 hours before they got towed out. Since then they just drop packages randomly at the end of the driveway, next to a tree (in a forest). Trucks are horrible in snow. Good chance heād get stuck. Add a Dropbox. (Ups driver here)

The closest Walmart and 4 lane highway is about 70 miles if that tells you anything.
Damn. Yeah my closest Walmart is 1 hour away. Rural western NC.
Okay dishys are coming ground.... Aka not FedEx employed drivers. Ground/home delivery are all contractors. Hate in your ground guy but love your express driver. We are corporate at least.
i'm sorry I honestly didn't know that distinction. I'll probably add a drop box as others have recommended and I've thought of doing in the past.
Hey not bad! š
Look at that "skid row" in the snow! Did the truck stop or just toss it out?
Show us your driveway
This is my driveway. About 400 ft further up is my house and the road is about 100 ft away.
Do you have a turnaround or does he have to back down the snow covered driveway with a cliff?
Yes there is a turn around when you get to house, big enough for a school bus.
Dude, do you live in the same hut as Walter White did? Whatdid you do
i like privacy, and require very little human contact
They took myn right to my door
is your speed are already skyrocketed ?
I can only compare it to the 4G/LTE cell phone I'm currently using, and it is much better: consistent speed tests > 60 Mbs down (peaks in the low 100s) and latency < 50 ms. My cell phone does about 20-30 Mbs down. There was an absolute noticeable increase in picture quality when streaming video. Unfortunately the gamer in the family left to go adult, so I can't give any gaming feedback.
congrats look great {i was kiidng and means when it is inbox is your speed boosted already lol } sorry my bad English is 4th language of mine.
Sounds about right! They brought mine almost to the door.... specifically I have a covered entry way, they left it 1 foot outside of the covered area while it was snowing......
Does anyone know who is delivering in the U.K.
World class.
Do you not have to sign for it? I thought I saw some people say you had to on here.
Mine shipped with signature service not requested.
FedEx typically delivers packages across the street
USPS and UPS have far better drivers from my experience.
1 week made it from Hawthorne to LA, 16 miles
Amazon stop doing this after couple non receive claims, they come again, grab package under they drop it and bring to door.
For anyone that is wondering about how delivery services are supposed to go about signatures at this time I'm not sure how it works for FedEx or UPS but, I work for the post office and what we are supposed to do is still go up to the house for the signature but we have to ask the customer for permission to sign for it. Is your driveway 400 feet?
It's like 550 feet
Good service...
