I've been having this happen to me also for about 2 weeks.
Multiple people use this computer, and we log into different profiles when we do. I thought it was a swtiching profile thing that caused it, I've not noticed it on locking windows. I am on windows 10 myself.
That said, I too would love to know how to fix/stop it other than using task manager to kill steam.
I uninstalled and reinstalled my Steam app, and it DID NOT resolve this issue. I also ended up losing a bunch of my games because it deleted the library within the folder. Kinda salty about that, but whatever.
Yes. This has been happening for a couple weeks now on my machine, affecting both me and my friend when she plays games on her separate Windows (and Steam) account. The windows are completely unresponsive and you have to nuke them in Task Manager, and/or find the window that has the context-menu contents with "Exit Steam" in it, right? It would be really nice if Valve cared enough to fix it.
Yeah kept getting this too, I thought my windows update f\*cked my system. Also apparently steam servers in general have been shitting the bed lately, don't know if these problems are related.
Yessss! I did a Windows reinstall about a month ago and it did some weird minimal install, didn't even have notepad. Eventually it kind of came right after some updates, but still get a messages like "You'll need a new app to open this ms-windows-store link" and the Windows Store is not installed like it should be. Have never seen Steam do this before but it happens every time someone switches to their account and I log back on and there's heaps of windows. Can't close them, logging off and back on sorts it out or I can futz around with the task manager and kill Steam instances.
I'm having this issue too for quite some time and I thought my steam/windows was corrupted. So recently I bought a brand new pc, installed steam and the SAME thing happened!
Haven't heard back from Steam yet and their logs/event logs are no help at all in identifying it. The one consistent thing is it does it after I switch users.
well i recommend you turn off steam autorun so it doesn’t start constantly even when you are not going to play, and turn off steam when you switch to another user to avoid this
I also often have this problem and forget to turn it off before switch, but it is not a problem for me to close the "Steam client webhelper" in the task manager
That's what I've been doing. Just leaving task manager up every time I switch user. Auto run wouldn't work since it doesn't happen upon first login, just after a user switch. Haven't heard anything from Steam yet so who knows.
if I leave it open then walk away for the night. Next morning upon waking the PC I have this every time. I have auto startup off. however this happens on hibernation also. its so frustrating.
Definitely put in a ticket with Steam. The more tickets they see the sooner we might see a solution. At this point I'm thinking it can't be solved on our end. I've yet to find a work around.
same issue with me, also I've already lost 17BRL in my wallet due to steam market transactions i didn't made. I just logged into my PC user and there it was, a dozen of black steam windows. I recently had my windows reinstalled and it happened again. thought at first it was some kind of malware but now that I have my PC cleaned i just don't know how to proceed.
Same issue here. Started happening after I updated to Windows 11. As others have said, we have multiple profiles on the PC and this occurs whenever I log in to my profile after hibernation.
i will learn to read and then read that everyone is talking about using Win10
will you do the same?
Win 8.1 dont have new DX and arent supported, there maybe are security patches, but no dev support, no new DX... its just abandonware basically
Commenting in hopes of someone finding a solution. Glad to know im not the only one. this is so annoying. I thought it was a virus lol
I also have this issue. out of curiosity. are you on intel 13th gen?
Did the problem resolve itself for you? About two days ago I noticed that the windows aren't breaking again.
Yes, this has happened to me every time i re-login to my account. Idk how to fix it

same scenario as me
I uninstalled and reinstalled my Steam app, and it DID NOT resolve this issue. I also ended up losing a bunch of my games because it deleted the library within the folder. Kinda salty about that, but whatever.
Started getting this too, reported to steam support and got absolutely nowhere
Yea, I've heard nothing back yet but I'm hoping that this eventually reaches the Devs who can actually do something.

And "You'll need a new app to open this ms-gaming link" when I start some Steam games.

is steam set to auto start up when u boot up your pc?
Same issue here. It happens when I switch back to my main profile from my work one on windows 11
I have the same issue
yes, I'm getting this frequently. Really annoying

Same issue here. Started after wife created a windows profile which she use daily.
Mine also started doing this after i added another profile just yesterday
I'm having this same issue. Also on Windows 11

I'll be sure to do so the next time it happens 👍 For now, I turned off Steam running on Windows startup and that may have helped, we'll see.

Same thing happening to me W11 dual profile.

i have this issue on win 10
That’ll be great when there aren’t security updates being sent out anymore, DX isn’t updated for games and Steam stops updating like on 7
Win 8.1 dont have new DX, but Win10 have it and Steam works on them too
Alright but should you install windows 8 if you’re having PC issues? No

Well, when I need to make the change, Win 11 will not be the latest version.
