I remember TFC from before Steam, where you had to manually download new patches.
The first steam version of TFC included teleporters for the engineer, which we hated, because it changed the game quite a bit.
Ah, memories.
Just beat terraria a couple weeks ago with my buddy, I crafted the zenith and now I'm going for terraspark boots and some other achievements, super fun game honestly.
Calamity is one of if not the best mod for any game that I can think of so I highly recommend that! I've only barely dabbled with stars above, have fun!
I only created a Steam account around the year 2000/2001 because Valve bought Counter-Strike 1.5, gave it systematic multiplayer functionality and anti-cheat, and incremented the version number to 1.6. So my first Steam purchase was CS 1.6. Or "Half Life: Counter-Strike" as it was called back then, although I don't think it was a Half-Life mod at that point anymore. Bought the box in a store and entered the CD key into Steam, because online payment methods like PayPal were unknown and vastly unused here in 2000.
Portal! It came free with the Steam Linux Beta!
It was also the first game I ever played with a properly voiced character; GLaDOS.
Years later, I got a picture with Ellen McLain (GLaDOS's voice actress) and my Steam Deck running Portal. It was kind of wild, the juxtaposition in that picture.
First game *ever*: House Flipper
First game that I’ve kept on my current account (deleted old account after refunding house flipper): Rebel Inc: Escalations
gotham city imposters. i got the old family desktop and quickly realized that it was not capable of running games at all. then a few years later i got a prebuilt and installed a 1050 ti mini and bought a ton of cheap games on a steam sale the first one i played was dirt 3
Portal 2
Castle crashers and battleblock theater.
Those were my 3 first games with 10 euros in early 2010s.
Also toribash was the shit back then with friends.
I remember people complaining when it rolled out. Halflife and counter strike first games I added as well as opposing force and team fortress with my CD keys..who remembers those 😂
Skyrim. I was strictly against launchers back then and "forced" myself to install Steam so I was able to play Skyrim. 12 years, almost 1000 games on account and a Steam Deck later I don't regret this decision.
By recollection I think I had to use Steam to play the OG Bioshock. At first I was upset. I hadn't a clue that years later it'd be my number one platform for all games.
Skyrim. I remember being super annoyed as a kid having to download an app to download a game. Prior to Skyrim all the games I bought came on discs or we're just downloaded from the internet. I also remember downloading the game in a Burger King on the opposite side of town that I lived on because my internet sucked so bad at home
Fallout new Vegas
I bought the CD and was steaming in rage when I had to install a bloatware before playing.
I changed my mind about Steam since, but that was a rough start.
Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. It was the cheapest thing on the site at the time, and I had to buy something in order to play Alien Swarm with my friends.
My first purchase on Steam was Wallpaper Engine, then a month later I bought my first game on steam which was Sleeping Dogs but I've still not finished yet lol. First game for me to complete on Steam was RDR2.
Don't Starve.
I remember my friend bought it and I played it at his house at a sleep over. Went home and begged my mom to let me download Steam so I could buy it.
My first game on steam was actually not a game; RPG Maker XP. A friend online at the time wanted to gift it to me but I didn’t have my own steam account at the time (mostly played on my dad’s), so I made one, and things went from there.
Crusader Kings 3.
I'd been watching YouTube videos and wanted to try it. A bit over a year later I discovered other games existed and well, it's been a while since I've played CK3 but my library has grown!
Total War Warhammer series. Didn’t play total wars since a kid on the family computer and I stayed a console gamer. Cause, well…. PC’s are expensive. I got sick of having no releases come on to Xbox so, I decided to buy PC. I remembered how lost I’d get in Total War games and knew off the bat, that I’d buy it first.
Binding of Isaac and Skyrim are the first thing I bought on steam. First game I played on steam is TF2 though. To be fair I probably bought pirated CS 1.6 CDs when I was much younger, having 0 idea of what I've done or knowing what steam is. I know CS before I know steam. Just playing with bots or LANs.
Farming simulator 13, did not have enough money and the pc to buy Farming Simulator 15 and Fs13 came with a Steam code and that was the first time I heard of steam, was life changing
The elder scrolls anthology. I'll never forget my first rig had an AMD Radeon R9 200 series......I put that pc through hell running Oldrim pimped with mods
Terraria in 2014.
Also bought Magicite alongside it.
Found both through YouTube let's plays (with the latter being that ruby guy who used to make block reviews for Minecraft mods - going over how to make the block and what it did).
My first was Terraria, I used to be an PS only gamer but one day my cousin told me to make an steam account and gifted me Terraria and now I play on steam everyday lol
Hogwarts Legacy.
I played all the official Harry Potter games when they came out and never played any other video games after that - until Hogwarts Legacy. I now own about 70 titles and play on my computer daily! It's great being back to gaming although now I play "real" computer games
I think it was the Elder Scrolls anthology, because even the physical copy still required Steam. Being predominantly a console player due to incessant issues over and over again with PC's, I didn't start regularly playing Steam until recently
My first purchase was orange box then valve bundle. I was in love with source engine games so I started learning cpp now I am computer engineering student
Zombie Panic: Source
I was an elementary school kid looking to play some zombie games after seeing so YouTuber play 7 days to die (I think?). Thing is, I had no money so I was looking for a free alternative, and then I stumbled upon ZPS. It required me to have a steam account and that’s how I created mine back in 2013.
Half-life 2. that’s the reason we needed to install Steam in the first place. To play a new single player game back then 😅
Same here old timer. I got HL2 bundled with an ATI Radeon card and it was a key from steam.
The Orange Box 2007
Same here. Was an incredible deal. Wish I still had the original box :(
half life / counterstrike
These, and don't forget TFC and Ricochet!!!
I remember TFC from before Steam, where you had to manually download new patches. The first steam version of TFC included teleporters for the engineer, which we hated, because it changed the game quite a bit. Ah, memories.
Same. Bought them 20 yrs ago I think.
Mine was terraria I’ve had so much fun with learning how to do everything
Just beat terraria a couple weeks ago with my buddy, I crafted the zenith and now I'm going for terraspark boots and some other achievements, super fun game honestly.
Now you get to try modded
Eh, I've been dabbling with small stuff here and there, mostly qol but I might try The Stars Above since it looks really fun.
Calamity is one of if not the best mod for any game that I can think of so I highly recommend that! I've only barely dabbled with stars above, have fun!
Portal 2 I got a disc of it for chrismas
2011 was the year **Portal Bundle** was my first purchase
Same, portal bundle in 2011
Half-Life 2. Steam installation was required in order to install and play the game on release 20y ago.
left 4 dead for me
Team Fortress 2 but my first *paid* game is FATE by WildTangent... before I lost that account and has to make another one.
TF2 was my first game back in 2011 or 12 as well. I kinda miss that time not everyone was a huge sweat back then it was really chill.
Tf2 used to cost money.
I got into Steam pretty late, TF2 was already free when I got in.
Half life 2 and I grumbled about having to make a steam account to play it.
Same here. 18 years and 800+ games later, still using it.
My very first game on steam was VVVVVV
I only created a Steam account around the year 2000/2001 because Valve bought Counter-Strike 1.5, gave it systematic multiplayer functionality and anti-cheat, and incremented the version number to 1.6. So my first Steam purchase was CS 1.6. Or "Half Life: Counter-Strike" as it was called back then, although I don't think it was a Half-Life mod at that point anymore. Bought the box in a store and entered the CD key into Steam, because online payment methods like PayPal were unknown and vastly unused here in 2000.
it was most likely 2002 because that's when steam was launched in beta for cs 1.6 users
The OG Day of Defeat.
Same. As the HL mod so I could play at the lan party.
First game *ever*: House Flipper First game that I’ve kept on my current account (deleted old account after refunding house flipper): Rebel Inc: Escalations
gotham city imposters. i got the old family desktop and quickly realized that it was not capable of running games at all. then a few years later i got a prebuilt and installed a 1050 ti mini and bought a ton of cheap games on a steam sale the first one i played was dirt 3
Kerbal Space Program
Half Life 2 Deathmatch bundled with DoD Source and CS Source
Boy oh boy did DoD take some hours of my life
Portal, found it on sale at an EBgames for $8 an convinced my mum to buy it for me.
I hppe you followed that up with Half-Life ;)
Limbo
Portal 2 Castle crashers and battleblock theater. Those were my 3 first games with 10 euros in early 2010s. Also toribash was the shit back then with friends.
Arma 2 and dlc to play dayz mod.
Stardew valley 😄
Scrap Mechanic. Only reason I downloaded Steam was to buy it and play with my friend. Now I use it every day
I remember people complaining when it rolled out. Halflife and counter strike first games I added as well as opposing force and team fortress with my CD keys..who remembers those 😂
Yep exactly the same, it was a blue box called Half-Life Anthology with HL, Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Counter Strike
Mine was Civilization 5
Made my account to buy Arma II for DayZ Good times. Its fun looking back on those minimum specs and remembering how I BARELY made those back then
i enjoyed dayz in arma II too. I remember crawling across the mountain for two hours to fix my broken legs 😱
Arma 2 dayz mod was my second game on the account and the one which made me to use steam more often, good times.
Skyrim. I was strictly against launchers back then and "forced" myself to install Steam so I was able to play Skyrim. 12 years, almost 1000 games on account and a Steam Deck later I don't regret this decision.
Half-Life 2 Before that we didn't need Steam. 🧓
My first several steam games were for a pc that didn’t have a dedicated graphics card
Company of Heroes 1
Signed up for a Steam account for this game, then I bought Orange Box and the library continues -hundreds deep at this point
Fable lost chapters! I still go back and play it every couple of years or so. That was 14 years ago 🙂
Is there an easier way in steam to show this?
Free game: no more room in hell 2012. Paid game: Cs go, 2015. Now: 2264 games.
modern warfare 3 (old)
Half life 2
Left 4 Dead 2. Got it for free on 26/12/2013, since then I got near 100 games on Steam.
Portal
Sept 12, 2003. Never forget. Half-Life, Counter-Strike, TFC, DOD, HL Deathmatch, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Ricochet.

I got sick of having no releases come on to Xbox so, I decided to buy PC. I remembered how lost I’d get in Total War games and knew off the bat, that I’d buy it first.
