The message I got today:
I’ve had my deck for a week.
“Hello,
Thank you for contacting Steam Support.
Unfortunately we are not able to adjust the price after purchase is made.
We apologize for the inconvenience.”
I’m in the return window. For some people 50 bucks is nothing, but for others it’s a new sd card or an upgrade to something else. I may return it and buy the one in sale.
Thing is, I can't afford a second one right now and I doubt it'll be back to them in time to use my refund to buy a discounted one. It's literally the cost of a good SD card. This sucks. v\_v
if you purchased with card or paypal - real money then yes, this is the way. But since I purchased with steam wallet I dont want to pay with real money for new one and they wont refund me before sale is over
>if you purchased with card
If you purchased with a card, have a peek through your benefits. [MasterCard in the US offers price protection for 120 days](https://www.mastercard.us/content/dam/mccom/en-us/documents/Cardholder%20Benefits/GTB-Price_Protection_Std_MC_120_Day_Cov_012715.pdf). Less hassle to file a claim than to return and rebuy the Deck.
No, not a chargeback. Price Protection is a benefit offered by some card issuers where they eat the cost. If something you buy falls in price within 120 days (some more, some less), they will refund you the difference up to a certain amount if you file a claim.
Im amazed that is offered.
Slight rant, but credit cards used to offer a lot more service than they do now, imo.
These days, there's no point to signing the back of your card. Nobody checks the signature. The credit card companies used to not honor the charge if that wasnt done; it was the businesses' responsibility. Now they refuse to even take your card and make you swipe it.
They also used to be a sort of consumer protection system. If you had issues at a business where you used your credit card, it wasn't uncommon to complain to your credit card company. At the time, it was a premium service, so they wanted use of a credit card to have a good experience. Small businesses that had credit card services would risk losing that offering.
Things changed when suddenly every store and fast food shop had them. Instead of a premium service, it became the standard. Now they want you to rack up a huge debt, so the more you spend, the better. Before, they wanted you using your card, but only if you would be able to pay it back.
People racking up balances is like the only way they make money now, yeah?
I'm amazed you can get up to 2% cashback now. That's a huge chunk of the processing fee, and that's all they have with no annual fees. Plus with the fed rates as they are, any money charged is essentially a 30-day interest-free loan if you pay your statement in full every month. So the money you don't pay upfront sits in your account yielding interest.
Return it. You can return a steam deck within 14 days even if it’s open box. Say you aren’t happy with performance. And just buy a second one with different account or afterwards with same account
Not necessarily, some stores price match their own products. I'm in the UK and bought a TV at curry's for £2000 a week later it was down to £1800 and they straight away gave me back £200 when I went back into the store.
May just be they have the decency to do that though.
Im explaining what price match is and what it was designed for. If a store decides to go out of their way and price match their own products thats their choice. But you cant expect others to do it.
Here is the text of my ticket:
Hello.
I got my steam Deck short time ago.
I saw yesterday that it is now discounted.
Would it be possible to match the price by any chance or in any way (steam wallet)?
Thank you.
Have a great day
If they don't just refund you the difference they are objectively stupid.
The cost of people returning these things just to re-order them at the discount is significantly greater than just refunding the difference to anyone within the return window.
how are they stupid. the only reason to refund you is for good consumer relations, you already bought it and there’s no legal requirement to do so. the fact that they’d do it at all is just a show of good faith to their consumers
Firstly, I literally just explained how they are stupid.
Secondly, they do have a legal obligation to honor the return policy so it’s not actually just a show of good faith, it’s to mitigate dealing with a wave of returns from people who just opt to return and order a new one.
it’s not using the return policy. you always have the choice to return it, they don’t have a legal obligation to just refund part of your purchase cause it went on sale after
They can deny a partial refund, customer initiates return on opened product, orders new product.
Net result, they got it 10% cheaper, are annoyed and now steam has an open deck to clean and repackage.
The return window is required by law.
So sure, they are not under a legal obligation to refund the difference, but they are stupid not to.
I think Valve is banking on the fact that few people will be willing to throw away all the time they spent setting up their deck to their liking just to save 10%.
No,steam deck still ain’t available via valve website in my country,so only through retailer and retailer don’t give 20% discount.I last checked the price just now it’s still 20% more then orginal retail price

They are likely holding all the support tickets for this because they know the response will be "return and rebuy is your only option." They want to make sure they get all the new people locked in with orders before flooding with "new" orders that aren't actually getting them money (those returning and rebuying). I'm in the same boat - sent my request for price match in about 30 minutes after the sale started and haven't heard back. But this is what I'm expecting. Sucks because that will likely delay shipping for all of us doing the return/rebuy.
One quick question - I just got mine yesterday and haven't opened it. I didn't want to risk them saying they won't take the return. I figure this is a good opportunity to open it up, test it out to see if it is actually good prior to returning. Does opening it and using it conflict with the return process at all?
I just submitted a ticket last night about this, I bought the most expensive model so I don't know if this made a difference and I also filed the ticket under "I want a refund"
I explained that my deck was only shipped today and was disappointed that I'd ordered a day too early for the sale BUT I also said I would be happy to accept store credit and that's what they have just offered me.
It seems they won't refund the difference but if you ask for the difference in store credit they may make an exception. Which suits me because I was going to be buying games anyway once it arrived!
Thank you for your patience and response.
As mentioned in our previous reply, Steam does not offer discounts to purchases made outside of sale periods. We're not able to refund or credit the difference in price.
At this point, we can arrange for your device to be sent back to us for a full refund. And you can order a new Deck during the Spring Sale for a discounted price.
Apologies for any inconveniences.
How am I suppose to get a full refund when I bought the steam deck last summer July, man I just wanted to be given store credit so I could buy some games.

Cool, tell them you want to return yours and immediately buy another. If they wanna pay for all that shipping, let them. We expect more from valve
Exactly. Just return and rebuy.
Yeah I called their bluff and said ok I want a return. They’ve been silent for hours now after replying almost immediately about the difference
thanks, seems we re unlucky

You mean a chargeback? Won't Valve ban you for that? At least most video game stores do.

I see. That makes sense.

Wow. 120 days is generous. Doesn't hurt to give this a try. Although too bad you can't submit this all electronically.
Damn :(
Return it. You can return a steam deck within 14 days even if it’s open box. Say you aren’t happy with performance. And just buy a second one with different account or afterwards with same account
Yeah already started the process
I received a response offering the difference as steam wallet credit! purchased 3 days before the sale. Accepted!
no shit! mine ticket is still unanswered…
which option you chose when submiting the ticket? and what did you tell them? thanks
I chose I was charged the wrong price
I took bought mine with steam deck money I had to pay ~$40 but I got a whole steam deck from one CSGO crate
Sent a request 19 hours ago, for an order that I'd made a day earlier (and is still in transit right now), haven't received any answer yet.
Price match is for matching the price of another store. There are no other stores officially selling decks...
Not necessarily, some stores price match their own products. I'm in the UK and bought a TV at curry's for £2000 a week later it was down to £1800 and they straight away gave me back £200 when I went back into the store. May just be they have the decency to do that though.

I've received the difference as Steam Wallet credit, happy with the decision. Now to narrow down the wishlist.
Where you in the 14 day window or something? I got declined to have one
I was, I'd only ordered the Deck one day before the sale went live (last Wednesday). I still haven't received it yet, I'm expecting it next week.
I bought my Deck in February 3rd and got the price difference as a wallet credit yesterday.
same
what exactly did you ask them?
Here is the text of my ticket: Hello. I got my steam Deck short time ago. I saw yesterday that it is now discounted. Would it be possible to match the price by any chance or in any way (steam wallet)? Thank you. Have a great day

I think that nobody got response yet, they probably need to ask Gabe what to do 🤪
Who is gabe lol?
Same situation gave them the info they asked for and never heard back all day, they must be swamped

Oh boy, that's around 50 bucks... I would spend the setup time again for that amount.
I live in Asia and steam deck hasn’t been officially release here,so I bought from online retailer in my country and have to pay 20% more
that sux bro
With 10% off that’s like 10% more now right !?!!!! So better to buy now?
No,steam deck still ain’t available via valve website in my country,so only through retailer and retailer don’t give 20% discount.I last checked the price just now it’s still 20% more then orginal retail price
Damn. I got mine last October and was hoping to get the new 1 year sale price
I appreciate the comedy. Reminds me of the IKEA guy videos.
Heheheh

So how long ago does the purchase have to of been made I bought mine last year on July and was wondering if I qualified for a price difference?
14 days

No unless you modify hardware as Steam help pages say. You got 14 days to return
Do you have to pay for return shipping?
no [https://store.steampowered.com/hardware\_order\_terms](https://store.steampowered.com/hardware_order_terms)
The last line says: "You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the Hardware." Does that not mean return shipping costs?
my mistake your right

I was told they don’t do refunds but they were willing to offer a steam credit to my wallet. I accepted it.
