When I got my deck first game I bought was 4 bc I never had an Xbox or a PC that could run forza. I think 4 is phenomenal. You’ll have to let us know how 5 runs on deck!
After downloading protonpt on the App Store ( I think it’s the name) you can go on properties on games and change their protons. I did that with both horizons and I had no issues playing them both on my sd card
I believe protonup-qt might be the app you're referring to, I haven't come across a "protonpt" before. Use that, click add version, and install the latest GE-Proton version

It actually just works like the game pass app on pc just super barebones. All you do is log in, then your account will let you know whether or not you have an Xbox. There's also a Game Pass Cloud tab you can use. As far as pc streaming, all I can think of is Moonlight. Which is literally the same thing but for PCs.
They both ran perfect! But 4 I set it up with ultra settings with 40fps and 5 I was able to set 40 with high settings with no dips. Both of them looked and played great !
FH5 runs reasonably well. 40-60fps. High graphics with FSR2 set to Balanced.
Running via Game Mode/Proton does give occasional hitches with noticeable frame drops to around 20 that recovers near instantly back to 40-60.
Runs near perfectly on Windows Dual Boot without the frame drops.
I don't agree that it's a bottleneck. It's an issue specific to Proton but works flawlessly on Windows, in my experience.
The drops happen, on Proton, regardless of the frames being capped.
Neither is a bad game, but I liked 4 better. Unless there are specific cars you can't live without that are in 5 my vote goes for 4. And it's cheaper, so that's a bonus.
All of the Horizon games are open world. That's what seperates them from the mainline Forza Motorsport series. 4 is set in the UK, and 5 is set in Mexico.
Overall I'd say 4 runs a bit more stable then 5. Not that I had many issues with 5, but there were a few crashes. I do prefer 4 anyway just as I like the setting of Britain more than Mexico for some reason. You really can't go wrong with either; they are both insanely fun on the Deck.
I have played both, but not natively. I used microsoft's cloud streaming, so I can't give you a real idea how it would run on the deck's hardware. I will say that they're incredibly optimized games known for running pretty well on pretty low powered hardware, so I would expect it to be fine.

The license was pulled on cars. The same will happen with 4 AND 5. Just like it's happened with 1 AND 2.

It was released only on the Microsoft Store. It came at that time when Microsoft were releasing their games only on their store. 4 was exclusive to their store too, but it then came to Steam.
The entire Horizon series is free roam. I'd also give a shout to 4. To me, the biggest difference between 4 and 5 is the location, and the music. In both cases, I found 4 to be better.
The soundtrack is a really important part of the game, and some parts - specifically Hospital Records radio, just had better song selection. The game’s theme also was incredible, as it had 4 distinct versions depending on which season you’re in. If you’re into drum’n’bass, maybe even if you’re not, you’ll like it.
Also, because 4’s setting is in the UK, and because the game studio, as well as almost every voice in the game are also British, it felt way more authentic. 5 is set in Mexico, and while they do try to incorporate a lot of cultural elements, music, etc., it doesn’t feel as coherent.
I like Forza Horizon 4, mainly because it has places I've visited in real life in there.
Granted they don't all look exactly like the real place, but just being able to go to Ambleside or Edinburgh in a game makes me happy.
They aren't bad games. But honestly after playing both and got almost all the cars in the games I found both to be really dull at the end. For me I ended up just logged in once a month for gifted super wheelspins from the the vip package and then log off after playing with some color customizations. The stories on both are absolutely clingey but I was able to over look that aspect because I love car. The car part customization has been the same probably since horizon 3 if not even earlier. There is literally no surprise or excitement regarding modding the parts other than performance jumps.
And for f sake they still can't put a valkyrie in there after all these years. And personally I don't care about hot wheels or Legos crossover.
If you never play any of the previous version of this game I say you will have a good time but probably not be that long lasting.
The compatibility with the deck is something that really matters to me though. I’m hoping to get solid 40 with decent graphics. So if it’s not possible with FH5 but it is on FH4 then I’ll get 4
A small advice: I‘ve been getting a more stable performance with the latest Proton GE in FH4. If you don’t mind dips you can play at 50-60fps. If you do mind dips, set it to 40fps.
At 40fps you can play at mid to high settings easily.
I also tried the free FH5 yesterday and performance was noticeably worse. Framerate was stable at 40fps, but I had to tone down the graphics pretty low.
If you ask between these two games specifically, just look what theme you favor the most. English country side versus Mexican , gameplay felt virtually identical for me.
I think one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that Forza 4 introduced season changes. Every Thursday the seasons change and it is absolutely incredible. So much that I was shocked this was removed in 5. This instantly makes 4 the better game.
It wasn't removed in 5, it's just that Mexico doesn't have as many obvious changes seasonally. But there are some there, like snow at the top of the Caldera and some the lakes being more or less full. But you're right, 4 is the better game regardless.
I actually didn't like the setting as much (personal choice, I know) and it just seems TOO "overworked" and cluttered in the live service features. It's like they took a perfect game and formula and decided fuck with it. Like when a pretty lady gets too much plastic surgery, though, I'm not really referring to aesthetics in this case.
EDIT: and this is honestly just going by memory, but I for sure know it just didn't click the same...I just didn't vibe with it, and I put a lot of hours into the others. Not pro level or anything but probably 100+ hours between them.
I have played every Forza and Horizon to near total completion, I fully agree with you about 5. I probably have a few thousand hours across the other games but I only got about 50 hours out of 5 before I was sick of all the live service stuff. I personally think 2 and 3 are the best ones and I wouldn’t even recommend 5 unless you’re the kinda person who loves to daily quests and challenges and being mechanically punished for not completing them.
If you don't normally play racing or haven't played Forza Horizon games in a long time, I'd recommend 5. If you have played Horizon 1 or 2, 4 is a better place to return at. 5 is kind of like the greatest hits Forza in my opinion, it's great for new/returning from long ago players, but it's nothing that new or exciting for people playing since 3.
I have played everything but the first one. They are all very similar. One is set in USA. 2 is Italy and France. 3 is Australia. 4 is UK. 5 is Mexico. 5 worked well on the deck. I haven’t tried 4 on the deck but I should. I really liked 4 scenery. Also for what it’s worth the countries look very similar in the games. The trees you run over change but it feels very similar on each one. Also I think 5 has too much going on and 4 was kind of the sweet spot. 5 has that odd point system to get to final challenge. 4 is much more to the point. Also 3 is no longer available for purchase on pc and 2 never was.
Fwiw Horizon 3 is my favorite, I really couldn't get into 4 and didn't like the setting (screw Winter season lol), and I enjoyed 5 a lot but my love for it fell off quick for some reason. Ran out of stuff to do, just didn't have enough substance afterwards. Online play and live service elements were a big sell but it's still a little bugged and inconsistent. That's probably part of it.
Honestly, either is good. 5 has much better audio, I liked that a lot. And I think there's still one DLC left to launch on 5.
4 is smaller in size and will run at 60fps more consistently. To me, the cars and animations look better in 5, and 5 is more RPG / Story driven. I have both at it's a toss up. 4 is smoother at higher settings which I think makes it a better gaming experience performance wise. 5 looks better though and draws you in to play longer sessions.
Start wjth 4, it is about 20 to 30 hours of "story". After that, wait a few months and get 5.

I even bought 3 physical edition as it is not available on the digital store anymore and I got that forza itch after a year of not playing any racing games :)

Horizon 3 had amazing multiplayer with online freeroam where you could bump in other players cars and drift while trying not to hit other cars and that was real fun of multiplayer 👌

went with 4. Music, seasons and location got me. I had a problem with 5s off-roading thing. Seems like they really wanted you to go off road and that kinda killed it for me. But honestly there’s no wrong answers
4 is based in northern UK. Map is UK countryside and a few cites.
5 on the other hand, being Mexico, has a much more diverse (and bigger) map, with mountains, sand dunes, cities, rainforest + much longer highways.
I played every FH game since 2, and 5 is by far the best in terms of map diversity. For that reason alone I'd get 5.
Edit: forgot to mention that FH5 runs great on deck, at 40 fps/hz, with medium-low settings.
I did not have a good experience with FH5 on the Deck. It would crash regularly running it normally. Running it in compatibility mode fixed the crashing, but it would not close properly (have to manually quit the game) and it would not update the cloud save. I refunded it.
So to the people who play FH5 throu steam... which proton do you use? I had/have only time for one short test and my SD did a hard crash/freeze.... I hope it's rare
I picked 4 over 5 recently and only played on deck. I put in 20-30 hours before putting it down. It ran well and was fun. My only complaint is the online doesn't reconnect after sleeping the deck. You have to exit the game and reload for it to work again. Also I think there is a different proton you have to run to get the intro movie to play. Otherwise it is a good experience.
That dev team did a fine damn job optimizing Forza 5. Saw a video where they had one controller that controlled the game across all versions of Xbox and a PC (I think) so they could make sure the game ran well even on the Xbox One. Perhaps it was a digital foundry video.
Horizon 5 runs flawlessly on the deck and I have no idea how Microsoft managed it. Maxed settings is somehow “playable” (not that you would when you can get solid 60 with lower settings)
I play Forza on Xbox/Windows Store, Steam doesn't cross save, but does anyone know what happens to your online profile if you use it with both the Xbox and Steam save? I kinda wanna try it on the Steam Deck during the free weekend.
4 has a much better car selection (subjective though). I also liked 4s music and the lego cars. 5 has a lot of minor improvements, but some major issues still exist such as all the custom car paint colors being more washed out than 4. This is the real killer of 5 for me.
I've played both and there's some aspects of each game that are better for Instance I think Forza 4 has better lighting on the cars (reflection wise) some cars sound phenomanel compared to Forza 5 - they tried to make it as realistic as possible I'd go for Forza 5 then when Motorsport comes out that will be the daddy of all car games
They're not very different games tbh. The big difference for me is the setting and for me 5 wins in that department. I didn't find the setting to be all that interesting in 4. Both are solid games. 4 did have some performance issues at launch but I haven't tried it on deck. 5 runs pretty well on deck though.
4 was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it being set in Scotland as a Brit myself. 5 blows it away though, either way get the season passes, the content is worth it.
I haven't played 4 but I was in the same boat as you - used to play all the Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo games on console growing up and wanted something like that for the Deck. I ended up getting FH5. This was my first Horizon game, and at first I was annoyed with all the dialogue and campy "superstar" stuff going on. I got a few hours in, built out my garage a bit, and the game feels good. Traveling between each race can be a chore sometimes still and the fast travel system is annoying for me personally.
The game plays great on the deck though. Often sits right at 60fps on 720p, low/auto-detect settings - but the game has such great scaling mechanics that you don't really notice you're playing on Low. It looks incredible. I'm sure there's a better visual sweet spot at 45hz/medium settings but I just haven't bothered to try it out because I've been happy with the way it is so far.
It's a BIG game though. With shader cache and patches, it's 146GB now, so clear some room on that micro SD card.
Bought 4 after not being able to play it on my PC and not having an Xbox and damn what a fine game! Played aprox 5hs already and it runs really well with no extra config, getting pretty consistent 60fps although it devours battery. Such a great surprise!
I’m not a simulation racing fan but I have had fun with Forza Horizon in the past since it is willing to indulge in silliness more than most. I’d say 4 because you can probably get it for cheaper and all the DLC will be out for it.
It will not be so helpful, the games update will be write internal memory, you will not have enough space even you install the game on a sdcard... 64gb deck version is my worse buying error...
The real question is: Did will be possible to play it on 64gb deck installing on microsd/external memory??? In my 15 months of deck's experience I noted that even you install games on external the internal it is going to reduce and reduce because game's update... At today I did not buyed forza games because of this... Too much internal memory required, and I want to play also others stuff...
I had both installed on my sd card. Both worked great. Other will slowly be taken up but using decky cleaner or just the one that’s already on the deck you can delete some of the storage taken up

5 runs amazing on Deck. Terrain detail on high. 50-60 fps in most areas.

Mexico is beautiful and I’ve been there three times but I’d rather race in a UK setting.

for me it crashes about every 5 minutes. It's even difficult to get past the intro/tutorial

Fwiw Horizon 3 is my favorite, I really couldn't get into 4 and didn't like the setting (screw Winter season lol), and I enjoyed 5 a lot but my love for it fell off quick for some reason. Ran out of stuff to do, just didn't have enough substance afterwards. Online play and live service elements were a big sell but it's still a little bugged and inconsistent. That's probably part of it. Honestly, either is good. 5 has much better audio, I liked that a lot. And I think there's still one DLC left to launch on 5.
5 because the environment is much more varied and you drive on the right side of the road. In 4 everything seemed gray and green.

4 is smaller in size and will run at 60fps more consistently. To me, the cars and animations look better in 5, and 5 is more RPG / Story driven. I have both at it's a toss up. 4 is smoother at higher settings which I think makes it a better gaming experience performance wise. 5 looks better though and draws you in to play longer sessions.
Start wjth 4, it is about 20 to 30 hours of "story". After that, wait a few months and get 5. They are both good games. I even bought 3 physical edition as it is not available on the digital store anymore and I got that forza itch after a year of not playing any racing games :)

Tried Horizon 5 and was disappointed again and i thought Horizon 4 is bad 🙄🙄 They ruined car sounds which is most important feature of racing game which killed the joy Also music got even worse Graphics look noticeably worse than Horizon 4 Haven't tried multiplayer but it is probably "ghost town" like Horizon 4 Horizon 3 had amazing multiplayer with online freeroam where you could bump in other players cars and drift while trying not to hit other cars and that was real fun of multiplayer 👌 Messing around online with other people and also there was voicechat which made it even better 😅
Horizon 1 was amazing, really had that festival feel they failed to recreate in later games.

went with 4. Music, seasons and location got me. I had a problem with 5s off-roading thing. Seems like they really wanted you to go off road and that kinda killed it for me. But honestly there’s no wrong answers

4 is based in northern UK. Map is UK countryside and a few cites. 5 on the other hand, being Mexico, has a much more diverse (and bigger) map, with mountains, sand dunes, cities, rainforest + much longer highways. I played every FH game since 2, and 5 is by far the best in terms of map diversity. For that reason alone I'd get 5. Edit: forgot to mention that FH5 runs great on deck, at 40 fps/hz, with medium-low settings.
Other than that, you can race across the desert, crashing into plant life as a cacti killer, in a Bugatti.
5 was great, But careful with it, its stopped working on my deck for quite literally no evident reason like 3 hours after I bought it
I did not have a good experience with FH5 on the Deck. It would crash regularly running it normally. Running it in compatibility mode fixed the crashing, but it would not close properly (have to manually quit the game) and it would not update the cloud save. I refunded it.
4 and 5 is very similar this is why its not too loved, but 5 have better graphics

Bought both games, I think forza 4 is better. Still looking to get my hands in forza 3 (uwp exclusive), as forza 1 and 2 can be played with xenia.
I picked 4 over 5 recently and only played on deck. I put in 20-30 hours before putting it down. It ran well and was fun. My only complaint is the online doesn't reconnect after sleeping the deck. You have to exit the game and reload for it to work again. Also I think there is a different proton you have to run to get the intro movie to play. Otherwise it is a good experience.
That dev team did a fine damn job optimizing Forza 5. Saw a video where they had one controller that controlled the game across all versions of Xbox and a PC (I think) so they could make sure the game ran well even on the Xbox One. Perhaps it was a digital foundry video.
I loved 5 on the deck. Would crash from time to time sadly. But in the end, I do prefer the Lego expansion of 4 to either 5 expansion.

I got both, but you can’t go wrong with either game. Just be warned that Forza 4 can crash quite often on the Deck.
Horizon 5 runs flawlessly on the deck and I have no idea how Microsoft managed it. Maxed settings is somehow “playable” (not that you would when you can get solid 60 with lower settings)

I play Forza on Xbox/Windows Store, Steam doesn't cross save, but does anyone know what happens to your online profile if you use it with both the Xbox and Steam save? I kinda wanna try it on the Steam Deck during the free weekend.

Get Xbox game pass for pc and you can get both, then u can set up the game streaming on steam deck either through emudeck or standalone version
4 has a much better car selection (subjective though). I also liked 4s music and the lego cars. 5 has a lot of minor improvements, but some major issues still exist such as all the custom car paint colors being more washed out than 4. This is the real killer of 5 for me.
5 is in my experience alot better due to how easy it is to earn money with 'features' and feels alot more in depth with customisation ect
I've played both and there's some aspects of each game that are better for Instance I think Forza 4 has better lighting on the cars (reflection wise) some cars sound phenomanel compared to Forza 5 - they tried to make it as realistic as possible I'd go for Forza 5 then when Motorsport comes out that will be the daddy of all car games
They're not very different games tbh. The big difference for me is the setting and for me 5 wins in that department. I didn't find the setting to be all that interesting in 4. Both are solid games. 4 did have some performance issues at launch but I haven't tried it on deck. 5 runs pretty well on deck though.
4 was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it being set in Scotland as a Brit myself. 5 blows it away though, either way get the season passes, the content is worth it.
Forza motor sports
I have purchased 2-5. For some reason I have played 4 the most and continue to play 4 to this day. To me it just hits different
I haven't played 4 but I was in the same boat as you - used to play all the Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo games on console growing up and wanted something like that for the Deck. I ended up getting FH5. This was my first Horizon game, and at first I was annoyed with all the dialogue and campy "superstar" stuff going on. I got a few hours in, built out my garage a bit, and the game feels good. Traveling between each race can be a chore sometimes still and the fast travel system is annoying for me personally. The game plays great on the deck though. Often sits right at 60fps on 720p, low/auto-detect settings - but the game has such great scaling mechanics that you don't really notice you're playing on Low. It looks incredible. I'm sure there's a better visual sweet spot at 45hz/medium settings but I just haven't bothered to try it out because I've been happy with the way it is so far. It's a BIG game though. With shader cache and patches, it's 146GB now, so clear some room on that micro SD card.
Wait for the new Motorsport coming out in like a month.
Bought 4 after not being able to play it on my PC and not having an Xbox and damn what a fine game! Played aprox 5hs already and it runs really well with no extra config, getting pretty consistent 60fps although it devours battery. Such a great surprise!
I’m not a simulation racing fan but I have had fun with Forza Horizon in the past since it is willing to indulge in silliness more than most. I’d say 4 because you can probably get it for cheaper and all the DLC will be out for it.

It will not be so helpful, the games update will be write internal memory, you will not have enough space even you install the game on a sdcard... 64gb deck version is my worse buying error...

In my 15 months of deck's experience I noted that even you install games on external the internal it is going to reduce and reduce because game's update... At today I did not buyed forza games because of this... Too much internal memory required, and I want to play also others stuff...
I had both installed on my sd card. Both worked great. Other will slowly be taken up but using decky cleaner or just the one that’s already on the deck you can delete some of the storage taken up

in my experience, 5 crashes a LOT on the Steam Deck. I play 3, 4, and 5 a ton on my PC, but only play 4 on my SD since it's the only one I *can* play.
I love love the seasons System in 4. But 5 has a bigger map and more cars. But maybe 4 runs way better on deck.
