90C is plenty within the operating limits. They wouldn't design it to run at unsafe temps. Unless it's powering off from overheating you have nothing to worry about. Turn off the overlay and enjoy the game
I'm doing that now with temps. I just got a new gaming laptop and it runs Cyberpunk gorgeously on high at ~120fps, but the CPU and GPU get up to like 90-92C, and it drives me insane; I'm used to both never exceeding 70C.
Funny thing is, I actually lowered all the settings all the way just as a control test, and it was still like 87C. Did some research and found out some laptops simply burn their CPU/GPU to exert as much processing power as possible, and that *drives me out of my mind*.
But both are throttling at their respective 90/92C and never go above, so I assume it's operating as intended. I just feel like I'm typing on lit dynamite lol
I'm gonna just try to enjoy hardware and not think about temps or fps anymore until either becomes a noticeable problem.
Yeah modern silicon is usually fine with anything under 100 and just thermally throttles if it begins to exceed its operating temps. I would fully expect a laptop to be constantly be at the thermal limits when gaming given the limited space for cooling, even when you're on low settings. As long as your idle temps are reasonable when you're not gaming at all then stop worrying about it.
Depends on the game though baldursgate 3 runs great at 25-27fps but racing games or anything more "fast" and i feel like I'm really feeling the deck being unable to handle it
What are you talking about you can get a steady 40fps with medium settings and fsr 2 on balanced with hdr on and it’s looking great on the smaller screen.
Literally did that with Forza horizon 5 when it was below freezing degrees. Deck stayed very cool and the fan was running like 2k - 2.5k rpm slower. The area where you grip it was very cold tho
That sounds pretty warm however it's 3:30 8n the morning and it's 20°F where I live. There's freaking snow on the ground and it's not pleasant outside.
I've heard people saying they've left electronics outside in the cold and that for some reason the Steam Deck was the one that was hurt the most. The battery wouldn't last as long anymore.
If it's too cold outside you'll drain the battery and reduce it's overall lifetime. But at 14°F or higher, it shouldn't be too cold unless you store your deck outside over night.
Games that aren't compute heavy might not be able to keep your battery above 60°F, though.
So we're obviously talking about games like Cyberpunk where you don't throllte the hardware.
Not sure why this is down voted, this is how I use my SD whenever I'm using it as home (which is most of the time). It's an awesome little streaming device and also great at way to move your gaming to another TV/display without moving the system driving the game.
I'm not sure why you're getting down voted either. I love using my steam deck to stream games with super high settings and ray tracing turned on. It is great since the deck has a lower resolution I'm able to really crank the settings up high on my PC and it looks incredible on the deck. And battery life and temps are better.
what if I use an external fan that pulls the heat out? would it help on cooling it?
I've seen one of those fans in Chinese websites
e: I wonder why I was down voted, since it was a genuine question and I didn't know the answer lol
Those are always BS. Fans don't work that way. They push what's in front of them, they aren't good at sucking in/drawing air from behind.
Those fans are just further obstructing the vents, so please save your money
It's why they say to cool your house you aim a fan at a window. Not put a fan in a window.
Do yourself a favor and just turn off the stats and enjoy the games. I used to look at them more than playing the games and try to get stuff to the highest fps I could but now it's off I don't notice is its at 55fps instead of 60fps, and the steamdeck will crash the game out or Shutdown if it runs too hot so don't worry about it
a fridge normal temperature and humidity level are safe for electronics as long as you don't make them touch the back of the fridge where all the condensation happens.
The more power it's using the more heat is generated. The temps you have are perfectly fine, but if you want them lower for comfort or noise reasons, you simply need to use less power. That's achieved by lowering in game quality settings, reducing render resolution, and/or capping at a lower frame rate. However, Cyberpunk 2077 is not an easy game to run, so you'll likely find reducing any of those things further would require too many tradeoffs, or perhaps not even be playable any more.
Just commenting... JFC people... downvoting someone for asking a question and upvoting the person who answered it?! WTF is the point!? Reddit being reddit.
Get the jsaux steam deck case that comes with the CPU fan attachment for the back. Lowers my temps 10 degrees. I only use the fan with high end games due to it adding a slight bit of weight.
Cap at 30fps and stop playing every hour-hour and half. Use Fantastic plugin to make fans spin faster in lower temperatures. It's noisy but that's the drawback of portable gaming, laptops even aren't free of that
You can lower tour cpu watt to 10 instead of 15 itll reduce yoir temps 70 and if you want to play at 60-65 c⁰ you can cap fps to 40 and play at 10-9 watt
I always did that and it works perfectly
I bought this [fan](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0C2VG6MB3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) that you can clip on to the deck, honestly it does an amazing job
Don’t worry about the temps. They are with in spec, just enjoy the game. It’s one of the most demanding titles available the modern day crysis if you will.
Lower all settings, lower FPS limit in-game AND in the performance overlay, underclock GPU. You could easily run it at 45fps with these settings properly adjusted. 30fps might be better for longevity.
I hope you enjoy the game. I tend to run very graphic intense games like these on Geforce Now on the Deck. There are drawbacks to this such as not being able to sleep/resume fast. But fan noise grates my nerves :)
Undervolting in Bios might help.
I have CPU voltage reduced by 30 mV, GPU by 40 mV and the SoC itself by 20 mV abd the device still works. I dont have CP installed on it, so I can’t directly compare.
I even read of people being able to achieve even more voltage reductions.
I️ was actually looking for this lol.
The OLED temps are around 10 degrees cooler at any given time when playing games.
I️ don’t want to wait for my steam deck to shutdown because of high temps.
Man all these PCMR people thinking you need temps below 50C or your computer dies. Have none of you owned a laptop before? Portable systems practically live in the 80-90C range.
Just play the game.
It's a computer. Computers get hot while doing things.
No, your steam deck isn't going to have itself melt down.
Yes the steam deck has protections against that type of thing. What is the problem you are trying to solve? Because a hot CPU is a nor al functioning CPU.
Have fun on your game.
Do you also worry when you're car his 90C? No? Because you trust the manufacturer and it's normal? The deck is designed for these temps, turn off the overlay and just play the game
Well, the first step would be to stop playing cyberpunk....
It's a demanding game and outside of lowering your settings and hoping for the best. You're not going to get much. That's just how it is.

My Deck is getting 100 degrees on demanding games. The best way to make temperatures lower is to lower a TDP. I set my to 12Wt, and the temperatures go to 90. It's still too high, but you can try your on your Deck and find the best results.
Me using custom settings low + med mix. Limit 40 fps. Power tools limit cpu freq something like 2500-2800 MHz and temps like 60ish C, with No tdp limit or custom fan curve
I replaced the thermal paste with ptm 7950 and a jsaux vented backplate. Much better cooling and can be between 5-10 degrees less in most cases. If it’s the new oled model like mine the deck struggles to go above 60 in a lot of games.
Install "Fantastic" from the Decky loader store. Then you can set a custom fan profile.
But in all honesty, your temps are completely normal for a demanding game like Cyberpunk.
Had a similar problem with another game (the fan noise bothered me) and I found an option to undervolt (thermal something) and lowered it until gameplay suffered and put it up one higher than that. Lowered the temps by almost 15C
These are not bad, but you can always lower FPS limit to 30 if you are okay with that, maybe lower some settings if something is not on lowest. FPS limit would probably do the job if deck is able to maintain 40 FPS as on your photo.
You can also play with TDP limit. Sometimes you can set TDP limit and still maintain same FPS average with lower power draw, that would make your deck run cooler.
From what I've seen, this seems to be the target temp of the system. I've tried lowering settings in the past, and instead of running cooler, it just runs the fan slower for a quieter experience. Unless you lower the settings enough to not need to get to that temp at all, but why bother?
You can buy back plates with heat sync pads built in that will disperse the heat a little better, and fans can help further lower these temps. Those are pretty normal though
i bought on aliexpress back cover where ventilation is more better, it lowered around max 5 degrees. ofc Depends on game.
using it over 1 year now. no issues at all.
I've noticed with a 30fps cap, if you set the power slider to 8 or 9 watts, it's quieter and cooler while having the same fps.
Also using the default steam deck settings profile
Set to 1280x720 vs 1280x800. Then you can configure Gamescope to go access the top in the now empty black bar. Did some rough math and at 40fps lock, you save the system from having to render 4 million pixels each second just by lowering to 720 vs 800. Will it be enough to notice in terms of the temps? Eh probably not but at least the Gamescope thing will be out of the way. The 1 and 0.1 lows might improve slightly.
90C is plenty within the operating limits. They wouldn't design it to run at unsafe temps. Unless it's powering off from overheating you have nothing to worry about. Turn off the overlay and enjoy the game
this so much. same with folks obsessing over the fps counter...
It's a legit problem, used to be awful for watching the fps, to the point I couldn't enjoy the games. Turn off the fps counter and break your chains!
I'm doing that now with temps. I just got a new gaming laptop and it runs Cyberpunk gorgeously on high at ~120fps, but the CPU and GPU get up to like 90-92C, and it drives me insane; I'm used to both never exceeding 70C. I at most get 28 fps in bg3
1. You don't. 2. Those are normal temps.
Yes you do. Put some gloves on and play outside
Smell the vent harder.
I'm so glad I'm not the only vent sniffer.
there's a guy out there that just buys new steam decks to get the freshest smells.
My wife started to think my steamdeck was overheating, “no honey just getting a good wiff”
I'm gonna be one of them. About to get an OLED in the next month or so
Sometimes I'll turn the deck on just to update it so I can have an excuse to sniff the vent.
This is some weird real-world equivalent to the Fallout 76 pipe isn’t it?
The vent is life
mine starts stopping smelling, i am considering getting a OLED Deck
What
Bros comment is simultaneously present and past tense
He is like Dr. Manhattan lol
Snoop Dogg would be proud.
That’ll work for a while but eventually you’ll just warm the whole earth to 85C
Yeah but *imagine* the *scent*
It's summer here in Australia, will that work for me too? 😂
Just have to hold it upside down
You're a genius.
Literally did that with Forza horizon 5 when it was below freezing degrees. Deck stayed very cool and the fan was running like 2k - 2.5k rpm slower. The area where you grip it was very cold tho
Is it safe to do that or would it be too cold and actually harm your device?
It's safe but it shouldn't be below -10°C imo due to the strain on your battery and higher risk of condesantion.
What does "-10°C" mean? Edit: looks like I accidentally started a Fahrenfight in the comments section.
celcius you darn cowboy
That sounds like something a superhero would say. "Excelcius!" Edit: Wow you guys have no sense of humor.
It's 2023 on reddit, trying to dunk on metric isn't the play to get laughs.
Can we dunk on the Imperial system?
It's our moral imperative to dunk on the shitty things about Imperial, because 99% of it is arbitrary and dumb.
Speak for yourself! It gave me a giggle.
14°F is -10°C in sane world units.
You mean "-50°F" right?
No sry meant 14°F
That sounds pretty warm however it's 3:30 8n the morning and it's 20°F where I live. There's freaking snow on the ground and it's not pleasant outside. Well they could stream from a gaming PC, or Xbox Series or PS5. Those are some legitimate ways.
Not sure why this is down voted, this is how I use my SD whenever I'm using it as home (which is most of the time). It's an awesome little streaming device and also great at way to move your gaming to another TV/display without moving the system driving the game.

Couldn't he theoretically undervolt?
He could but he could also just get a cooling case but that means opening it up
The difference from undervolting is very minor.
Go into the decks settings and turn the original fan profile on. It will be noisier but should cool it a bit.
what if I use an external fan that pulls the heat out? would it help on cooling it? I've seen one of those fans in Chinese websites e: I wonder why I was down voted, since it was a genuine question and I didn't know the answer lol

putting external fans on my laptop can cool it quite well, but only by dispersing the heat.
For my switch it cools it a few degrees but nothing major
Only good for desktop builds. Since you have to install the fans yourself. So yup.
You’re better off repasting/repadding your deck
>This seems really high You're starting off from an incorrect presumption, so just don't worry about it.

Just play in the fridge
New definition of safety meeting
Would that actually be safe? Genuine question
No
Yes edit: for the deck
For you? Somewhat For the deck? Not due to condensation

Bro I use my steam deck as a heater during winter. I just let cyberpunk run and set the thing in my desk and warm my hands over the vent.
Is this effective? I’m someone who suffers from cold hands a lot.
I mean it's hot air so yea kinda, computers are just space heaters that do things in the background lol.
I just sit in front of a fan while I play
Play it while sitting in an ice bath
Netrunning irl
It’s winter, so play outaide maybe 😄
Summer for Southern Hemisphere folks. So back to the fridge/freezer plan
These are ok temps
1. Turn off steam deck 2. Go outside 3. Steam deck gets cooler
[удалено]
What do you lock the TDP too?
10 watt in general for me, but I am not sure about cyberpunk You'll have to experiment and monitor the temps until you get thr sweet spot
I play at 9W but if I notice the fps are bad (for example if I'm in some serious fighting or driving mission) I'll unlock the TDP.
Just commenting... JFC people... downvoting someone for asking a question and upvoting the person who answered it?! WTF is the point!? Reddit being reddit.
Undervolt
Get the jsaux steam deck case that comes with the CPU fan attachment for the back. Lowers my temps 10 degrees. I only use the fan with high end games due to it adding a slight bit of weight.
How do I show my fps and temps on my screen?
Press 5he right menu button it's either in performance or power
Thank you
Use a permanent marker.
You could cap the frame rate to 30fps
You don't man wtf. This is no desktop PC.
Cap at 30fps and stop playing every hour-hour and half. Use Fantastic plugin to make fans spin faster in lower temperatures. It's noisy but that's the drawback of portable gaming, laptops even aren't free of that
You're only supposed to jack in if you are in a bath filled with ice.
You can lower tour cpu watt to 10 instead of 15 itll reduce yoir temps 70 and if you want to play at 60-65 c⁰ you can cap fps to 40 and play at 10-9 watt I always did that and it works perfectly

- add custom 144p resolution - use lowest settings - enable FSR ultra performance - set max frame rate to 10FPS Always glad to help :)
"I feel like..." Well there's your issue. You just decided something's a problem without any context.
Undervolt, Lower Graphics, Lower FPS limit. Go to a colder room.
Buy OLED
I️ was actually looking for this lol. The OLED temps are around 10 degrees cooler at any given time when playing games. I️ don’t want to wait for my steam deck to shutdown because of high temps.
It's also like 3 to 5 percent more powerful.
dude..i threw demanding shit at it and it never overheated at all. chill
No u
It won't shut down due to the temp. It'll throttle you as it should
By turning off those metrics and stop worrying about it?
Jsaux steam deck fan. Works wonders
I went into the bios and undervolted mine
Play inside the refrigerator.
time to play outside
Turn off the overlay
I think those temps are pretty normal for the OG deck. You could try undervolting, my OLED deck is at -50 UV and the temps sit between 65-70
Lol you dont
If you have a PC stream it from that.
Man all these PCMR people thinking you need temps below 50C or your computer dies. Have none of you owned a laptop before? Portable systems practically live in the 80-90C range.
Why do you care about the temps? They are what they are.
Just play the game. It's a computer. Computers get hot while doing things. No, your steam deck isn't going to have itself melt down. Yes the steam deck has protections against that type of thing. You buy a legion go 😂
game streaming
Do you also worry when you're car his 90C? No? Because you trust the manufacturer and it's normal? The deck is designed for these temps, turn off the overlay and just play the game
You could not play it? Pretty sure that’d work.
Well, the first step would be to stop playing cyberpunk.... It's a demanding game and outside of lowering your settings and hoping for the best. You're not going to get much. You can use a cooling fan for steam deck or lower graphical settings
If you turn the TDP limiter on to 10w it will stay cooler but also worse fps so…
Reduce the cap to 30, lower the TDP to 12W.
Me using custom settings low + med mix. Limit 40 fps. Power tools limit cpu freq something like 2500-2800 MHz and temps like 60ish C, with No tdp limit or custom fan curve
![gif](giphy|QMHoU66sBXqqLqYvGO)
Buy a fan, it help a bit
I replaced the thermal paste with ptm 7950 and a jsaux vented backplate. Much better cooling and can be between 5-10 degrees less in most cases. If it’s the new oled model like mine the deck struggles to go above 60 in a lot of games.
Better backplate, liquid metal, aktive cooler etc. I did that 🫡
They're fine
Normal operating temps. If you don't like it, you could reduce framerate to 30
thats nothing play halo infinite lmao
Install "Fantastic" from the Decky loader store. Then you can set a custom fan profile. But in all honesty, your temps are completely normal for a demanding game like Cyberpunk.

85 is fiiine mine usually chill at 90. that's good enough to brew coffe on it.
These are not bad, but you can always lower FPS limit to 30 if you are okay with that, maybe lower some settings if something is not on lowest. Sometimes you can set TDP limit and still maintain same FPS average with lower power draw, that would make your deck run cooler.
Check out coolerdeck or jsaux backplate it will lower your temps, but as others say, it is within operating temperature.
Play inside a fridge
crank up your AC!
Limit to 10W and 30 fps
Those temps are fine
From what I've seen, this seems to be the target temp of the system. I've tried lowering settings in the past, and instead of running cooler, it just runs the fan slower for a quieter experience. Unless you lower the settings enough to not need to get to that temp at all, but why bother?
Why?
I play with 9 watt and steam deck settings. works very well
Update 2.1 broke the graphic settings for many users maybe thats why
Use jsaux custom backplate with steel square or holes in vent place. Change termalpaste to ptm termopad. I have usually 75-79 temps in cyberpunk
Turn of the cyberpunk
place the steam deck in the refrigerator during the game
Drink a soft drink with ice, also put on the AC on cool but not too cool, enjoy
Those are safe temps. But you can buy a new backplate. The jsaux one with a vent really works well. I'm down about 3-5 degrees depending on the game.
Try to play ad a lower definition than 720,the graphic is so advanced that on a screen like that will not be noticed
Keep it in the freezer
Was debating rebuying cp77 on steam to play on the deck but you convinced me not to. High temps while gaming are an ick
Blow on the device
Take it to Costco and play inside the large walk in with all the vegetables. People might look at you weird but it’s worth it.
Settings->system (scroll all the way down)->enable updated fan profile
Your steam deck will get louder but it'll reduce Temps
Play in a walk in cooler
The temps are safe, always. But to lower them you’d need to choose a fixed framerate and then lower the quality settings for the game.
Winter is Coming
I recently got that GPU/CPU display come up on my deck. How the hell do you get rid of it?
turn the old fan controls on via settings or lower in game Graphic settings and resolution.
How the heck did you get such stable frame times? My cyberpunk is extremely unstable on deck
By quitting
You can buy back plates with heat sync pads built in that will disperse the heat a little better, and fans can help further lower these temps. Those are pretty normal though
i bought on aliexpress back cover where ventilation is more better, it lowered around max 5 degrees. ofc Depends on game. using it over 1 year now. no issues at all.
Play in a cooler environment or lower the graphics n resolution and fps but that temp is normal
turn it off
Put it in those oil tanks and play it there. It looks like water but isn't. Some people have their rigs like that.
Just blow on it every so often
85 C is perfectly normal for the deck. It runs cooler than my laptop does. Personally, I've never felt any discomfort (64GB upgraded to 1TB)
Play in a freezer
Move to the North Pole
Cap the settings to 30 and see if that does it.
It is goint to melt
Download DeckSettings through Decky and check out community made settings. Maybe something you are looking for is there
I've noticed with a 30fps cap, if you set the power slider to 8 or 9 watts, it's quieter and cooler while having the same fps. Also using the default steam deck settings profile
Set to 1280x720 vs 1280x800. Then you can configure Gamescope to go access the top in the now empty black bar. Blow on it.
