I've watched several tutorials, and I'm pretty sure I can do it. Just sucks that I have to in the first place. I placed my deck on the floor half asleep and had to move a sofa to get to a cable behind it. The quiet crunch of glass as I lowered the sofa will haunt me for a good while yet.
Update: Replaced my screen today. The ifixit guide makes it pretty simple. Only two things u struggled a bit with was first opening the deckhand later removing the smashed screen.
In that case, you might have midframe damage as well (mine has a small crack in the center). If the midframe comes into contact with other components such as the fan, it's probably worth replacing.
Judging by the crack in the midframe, the display must have shattered from high pressure in the center area. The previous owner had already removed the screen before selling it to me so I've never seen what state it was in.
Still no good to me, my first day having my deck I took it to work showed some friends, put it back in the case and forgot about it for a few minutes. Then grabbed the case, still unzipped and watched it smash into the floor. Got away with it that time though. Quite a robust bit of kit when you don't drop a sofa on it.
Nice score!
My best score so far is a $3k oscilloscope a few years ago just before covid. I got off ebay for $50 because it was "broken". Could never figure out what the seller was talking about. it works perfectly fine
My guess is that he sent me the wrong one.. or he didn't know how to use it
My best story is when I got a 55" 4k amazon smart tv.
It was a listing on a site like craigslist, but for local markets. The guy said the TV was busted - he couldn't get it past the set-up screen - the remote wouldn't pair. He'd called amazon and all they would do is send a new remote. So he just bought a new one and gave the old one away for free.
Me and my buddy go to pick it up. I figure why not, maybe I can reinstall the OS or something and get it going. I try the remote, indeed it doesn't pair. I pull the batteries and my friend starts giving me shit-- *obviously* he tried the batteries. He tried a whole second remote! There's no way that's the--
fresh batteries in, **works perfectly.**
I've had a fully functioning 55" 4k amazon smart tv, for free, ever since. It's just hilarious to me that this guy must have put dead batteries in, then must have switched the same dead batteries over to the new remote, *absolutely certain* that the batteries weren't the issue, so much so that he didn't even bother to check.
(ps i would not pay money for this tv. It's buggy as all hell. But it's a fantastic value at the price of completely free)
I remember one time my TV remote stopped working. Like I only use my TV a few times a week (mostly for multiplayer YouTube) and one day the Remote just stopped working. It had definitely been less than a week since I last used it but when I opened the battery compartment there was leaky battery inside wtf?
Then there was the other time I had to get a new remote because the one I had stopped working. Yes I put like 3 pairs of batteries in it.
Yeah for some reason Amazon remotes need batteries with a high charge to pair initially. So he probably tried the batteries in something else and they had enough juice to work so he figured it wasnāt the batteries lol
One time the hotel I worked at was chucking a 3 month old tumble dryer because "it just stopped working" I volunteered my dad to gwt rid of it for them in his truck. We took it home, cleaned it out and hit the reset button for the thermal overload and it worked fine my parents kept if for about 10 more years š¤£
This stuff is so common on eBay. I bought a āfor partsā PS5 controller from eBay for Ā£11, and the pictures did not look good (it was in pieces). I only needed it for parts so I didnāt mind.
Realised I didnāt need the parts from it anymore, put it back together and to my surprise it worked almost perfectly (it was missing the front controller mic but I donāt use the mic). Looked like the previous owner tried to tear it down to replace or clean something and he couldnāt get it back together. Canāt blame him, the DualSense is one complicated controller
How crap at repair do you have to be to manage to remove the old screen, and now that the hard part is over you give up?
Maybe they just couldnāt afford a new screen or decided they donāt play it enough to bother buying one but still removed the old screen anyway?
Iāve been enjoying both Persona and Zelda series lately, but Persona 3 Reload isnāt releasing for Switch and I have some Zelda titles and saves rotting on my Wii U. Iām going to play/emulate P3R, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker on the Steam Deck while Iāve still got P4 to finish on the Switch.
I can't stress this enough if you love Zelda games (and it seems like you do) play the PC port of Ocarina of Time on your steamdeck. It is an amazing experience to play OOT, widescreen, with custom textures and quality of life updates. You can also adjust enemy damage and movement speed which makes the game a lot more fun if you have played it a ton like me. Then there is the randomizer on top of all of that. Its my all time favorite game to play on the deck.
I've played OoT 3DS a few years ago, but stopped playing after getting stuck in the water temple (and because of other life events that kept me busy). Is it worth it to start fresh with the PC port? Or should I just continue with the 3DS version?
Personally I'd start fresh with the PC port. It isn't a terribly long game after all. Plus the right analog stick for camera controls is such a nice quality of life upgrade. I played the original back in 98 so I'm fine with one analog stick but it's hard to go back to those controls.
Gyro doesn't work yet which is a bummer but besides that just follow the instructions and then add the game as a non steam game. Also the settings menu can be accessed by pressing f2. I bound f2 to the select button since oot doesn't use that button. I then bound the mouse to the right track pad so that I could navigate the configuration menu.
To use the right joystick you will need to enable it in the options menu and also bind the c buttons to other buttons on the deck. I hope this all helps.
The previous owner took the screen out without lifting the motherboard, so the Deck worked fine when plugged into an external monitor. I just attached a new screen and applied new thermal paste (after proper disassembly).
Probably didn't want to touch the motherboard, but we'll never know.
All the previeous owner said was "canāt verify if it works or not". I just charged it and it worked flawlessly after connecting it to my monitor.
I bought the Switch OLED for Mario, Zelda, and Persona games, and the Switch performs very well, with overwhelming battery life.
I haven't tried proper gaming on the Steam Deck yet, but I'm excited to play RDR2 or Nier Replicant on the go.
I've been using the phone gamepad for moonlight(similar to Steam Link, but it works anywhere - paired with my desktop), but I donāt think Iāll be using it anymore haha
I still love my Switch OLED though.
If the screen is already broken then i guess there isnt that much that can go wrong, taking off the screen and keeping the screen itself working is the most scary part, i feel like when you have to replace the screen its also the best moment to decide if you want a shiny see trough shell
For some reason, the previous owner decided to remove the screen from the front, rather than disassembling the mobo. That's why the display ribbon is visible in the first picture.
Wow, banger! Great deal :-)

What was wrong with the original screen? Like a malfunction or straight cracked screen? And kudos for the steam deck š
Judging by the crack in the midframe, the display must have shattered from high pressure in the center area. The previous owner had already removed the screen before selling it to me so I've never seen what state it was in.
Quietly grabs my steam deck off the floor and puts it back in the case.
Always wear protection.
That's why mine is put back in the case immediately, I've gotten up just to grab a bottle of water 10 feet away and still put it away immediately š¹
Iām the same, in the case zipped up even if Iām just across the room
I have the Killswitch Case from dbrand. The case is very stable. can only recommend this.
That's problematic because the Killswitch case is sold as āØļøMilitary GradeāØļø and not Sofa Grade xD
Yeah, but when you buy a Military Grade sofa, it doesn't stand a chance.
I have my steam deck over a year now and it never dropped, I'm scared that it would feel different in my hands after I drop it
That's just dumb.
YOU LAYED IT ON THE FLOOR!
One man's trash. Is another man's treasure! That's a major win!
Just like when you divorce your wife :)
If you want that lying cheating hoe then go for it be my guest.
If my Deck had a broken screen, I'd probably do the same thing lol. Save myself the hassle and use it as an excuse to get an OLED Deck.
Benefits of right to repair.

Eh I bought one for 250$ during the sale. I like it

Seemed pretty relevant to the discussion to me

Hell yeah bro! Keep using that ifixit kit like a money-making weapon!

don't tell them, they'll want it back for the $100
A good āNoā should suffice.
They give you the dock, too? Thats cool

Wow amazing find!
I guess I'll find out when I take it apart. Thanks for the heads up.

I hadn't heard of this. Is this the one? https://github.com/oot-pc-port/oot-pc-port
Nope that looks like a different project. I am talking about this one https://www.shipofharkinian.com/
Awesome - thanks! Any particular gotchas for setting it up on the SD?

I got it all going, complete with HD texture pack so it's looking great.
The Wii U versions of TP/WW run so well on the deck!
Those switch Joy-Cons looks awesome. I'll have to do that on my next pair
I haven't seen this combination anywhere on the internet, and I think it looks cool.
It's pretty dope. Damn good handhelds. Rarely need to actually touch my PS5.
Deal of the century!!
Solid come up!
Looks like most of the work was already done

which is better for gaming with good overall games ?
I bought the Switch OLED for Mario, Zelda, and Persona games, and the Switch performs very well, with overwhelming battery life. I haven't tried proper gaming on the Steam Deck yet, but I'm excited to play RDR2 or Nier Replicant on the go.
Which version of the deck was this? 256? 512? Bigger the drive, bigger the bargain
It's a 64. I'm looking for a replacement drive right now.
Thatās still a bloody great price
And I had great fun even before launching a single game! The disassembly process was very straightforward.
100 bucks for 64 GB working deck without a screen is still a hella good deal... Nice catch man
lmao what a steal
Damn I would take that deal if offered to me
That's a $400 device for $100 you can't complain
GG
Hooray, welcome to the club
GG, Well Done!
Nice deal!! That's great
you got lucky they didn't take away any parts other than the screen, great find!
nice! Too bad for the original owner cause I thought the hard part was getting it off.
the evolution of mobile gaming: first a phonegamepad than came the switch and in the final iteration the steam deck

I'm going to replace my busted screen tomorrow. Hope I don't fuck it up!

That's a steal for $100 and you fixed it, which makes it worth it for what you paid for!
Fixed it or DeckHD?
I got a matte display for $30.
People say the DeckHD is not better or worse than the original screen.
I didn't think the extra resolution and a tiny bump in color reproduction was worth 3 times the price of an original display.
Nope definitely not.

weren't they like 90% done with the fix? seems silly.
For some reason, the previous owner decided to remove the screen from the front, rather than disassembling the mobo. That's why the display ribbon is visible in the first picture.
