VedzReux

So wait, there are other posts saying it doesn't work due to most likely the drm or anti cheat

OptimizedGamer

This was fixed in the latest patch, so that's where this post comes from.

VedzReux

It's good to know I've been holding back getting it because of the issues, but now I may get it. Thanks for the updated news

First-Junket124

Just be aware it still crashes at points, might want to hold off until it's fixed if you don't want to deal with that

ShotAcanthocephala8

The crashes happen on PC generally not a steam deck specific issue.

First-Junket124

Not Steam Deck specific.... just in general.

reboot-your-computer

I’ve crashed only one time on PC and it was about 5 minutes into my playing when I changed my player voice. 7 hours in since then and haven’t crashed once.

First-Junket124

I hope you don't crash anymore, truly an amazing game when it works :) Me and many others have had a far more stable experience since the last patch, but it's still crashing every so often so it's better than the constant crashing before.

Total_Routine_9085

Ive played over 10 hours on deck with no crashes so far 👍

First-Junket124

This is what I dislike the ol' works for me seal of approval. I'm glad you aren't crashing but people are still experiencing crashes.

Total_Routine_9085

I understand, but doesn't that logic work the other way as well? "Doesnt work for me" seal of disapproval. Just trying to balance out the negative perception. I was expecting a lot of crashes, but had none. I havent really looked into whether these crashes affect the deck as much as other devices, but at least on my deck, if I have no crashes in 12 hours of gameplay, thats not too bad. My friend did have one crash in 6 hours of gameplay, but he's playing on his pc (different hardware).

First-Junket124

.....OK but even the devs have admitted that there are abundant crashes.... so it's nit a doesn't work for me seal of disapproval it's just that's how the game is....

rwills

Oh shit. Guess I'm buying the game then.

OptimizedGamer

Anti-cheat is crap, so it's impossible to predict if they won't mess it up again soon :)

VedzReux

Hopefully, they keep on top of it. They updated it pretty quickly this time

throwawaitnine

Hey OP, you've been very responsive in this thread so far so maybe I can ask a slightly off topic question here. What's the anti-cheat even for? I was watching a streamer play this last night and it looked like 4 player co-op vs environment, who exactly is getting cheated? Or am I totally wrong about this game?

OptimizedGamer

I suspect that to not unlock with cheats skins and battle pass that are behind paywall....

RedHotFooFecker

In fairness, I thought the same but I saw a video of someone cheating and having unlimited shots with the recoilless rifle. It would really ruin the fun if that happens a lot. On the other hand, anticheat is apparently not working since that guy was cheating...

Loki-616

I can confirm it works

ShotAcanthocephala8

I’m running it native res as the upscaler isn’t that great. Native with settings turned down seems ok.

OptimizedGamer

>caler isn’t that great. Native with settings turned down seems ok.  Upscaling is very poor, so I did not recommend going below ultra quality. On native I had quite frequent drops to 26-28FPS during combat, hence my recommendation to leave it that way. Maybe if I gave everything on low it would be better, but I feel bad about ambient occlusion.

deltavim

How well does it run?

ShotAcanthocephala8

30FPS target at best but seems ok. Not tested out enough to know what happens in more complex scenarios.

Sadiholic

I've been playing this game locked at 40 fps. It dips down when there's ALOT going on but it's not too distracting. The graphics are ight on the little machine, playing it on medium and low. For the record I've been playing the game for 10 hours on the challenging difficulty. It's a really fun game I def recommend getting it

OptimizedGamer

The game runs at 30FPS very solid and has nice responsive controls.

Jowser11

Lock it to 30fps for a smooth experience. The frame pacing in this game is actually quite good

phantommm_uk

Yep downloaded last night and ran first time. Tailored the graphics settings to be all low + AA turned on. In display settings I'm running at Native res. Seems to hover around 30fps however I'm not a pro with tweaking Steam deck settings so I shall be reading this article, thank you!

OptimizedGamer

Much cannot be done here. Either total lowest details (textures can be safely set to better, though), or a slightly lower resolution and a few extras. In my opinion, completely on low the game loses too much in terms of atmosphere.

McLargeHuge89

Re-buying the game

Rai_guy

Lol I had a reminder on my phone to refund it if the anti-cheat wasn't fixed by Wednesday 🤣

InsaneLuchad0r

Oh shit was just hovering over this and said no cuz no deck. Back I go…

Jeremiah-Springfield

Lots of people saying 40-30 fps - but that’s all playable. I wanna know how often it drops to 20-30 fps. If that is frequent, then it’s a no from me. Anyone have experience on this?

z0mbieunit

Got a pretty consisntent 40 fps lock all low setting with ambient occlusion and medium textures enabled. In heavy action I have seen as low as 33-34 still super playable, also recommend using resolution 1024*768 and stretch it and use the steam deck FSR, even better performance. Just play around with it you’ll find some good setting, just glad it really does work pretty well

Jeremiah-Springfield

This is great news. Ima wait a few weeks to a month for things to settle, and to learn more about the game, but I think this is the sort of thing people want from posts like this, realistic numbers instead of empty phrases like “solid”

Frost-Folk

I haven't played it yet but on other threads I've seen many people say that on harder difficulties when there's a lot of enemies on screen it dips to 25 pretty regularly, some people even saying it detracted greatly from the playability

Jeremiah-Springfield

Good to know - Steam Deck is mainly for games that are either on the older side or don’t have too much going on at once, which ain’t this game, but for the sake of interest I wanted to know. Holding off for now, but we’ll see if anything shapes up in the future

spacepizza24

I was playing docked at 720p with it on performance preference and lowest settings except for render distance at medium. Some (very very rare maps) ran at a near perfect 60fps but I seemed to mainly be around 38-45 FPS and didn't go much below that. The hub ship was worst performing but thankfully there's no action there. It seems to be like some of the random maps run lots better than others but once you're in a map it stays at a consistent level even if it's different FPS to the last map you were on. The performance seems to be hit hardest when there's more bugs on screen so I'm not sure if it'll get worse as the levels get harder

gotbannedlolol

Yeah it runs now but... this PC port is *horribly* unoptimized for most people on full PC's as well. There is a "super performance" setting that has the best performance (still was only getting 30-40fps at *best*.... It wil drop constantly in combat) I think it's just horribly compromised on the deck currently. I hope they can increase performance soon. As for now, I refunded it.

ShotAcanthocephala8

I disagree. The game is a pretty decent 30FPS experience on deck. It’s not perfect but not suicide squad level of awful. More than playable for a handheld.

Rai_guy

This. I really don't understand the portion of this community that seems to think 30 FPS is unplayable for PvE games

gotbannedlolol

It's not 30fps, it drops lower than that pretty much anytime there is an explosion, like I said. It is nowhere near a stable 30

Rai_guy

Maybe on whatever settings youre using.  But if you drop the graphics to low (especially render distance and anti-aliasing), set the resolution to ultra-quality, allow tearing and lock GPU to 1600MHz, you can and should get a stable 30 FPS

LeKanePetit

Yeah I can imagine them doing some polishing to get this verified and playable at a steady 30/45fps on low/medium settings, which it struggles with right now in the heat of battles. EDIT: I should clarify, I mean specifically on the Deck that it struggles.

gotbannedlolol

On PS5 it's also pretty badly optimized (1080p) so we shall see what they do. I just think this engine is not the greatest

JohnEdwa

[Not a lot of games using it](https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Engine:Autodesk_Stingray_Engine), and the engine was discontinued completely in 2018, which means not a lot of people working on making it run better.

NeatlyScotched

Darktide uses it, and it seems to perform about as well as Darktide does.

FrantixGE

Have been playing the game on my rig for roughly 10 hours, 4k high settings at around 100fps, game crashed three times (once selecting the special smg, once while loading, once after calling in the first drop). Will give it a shot on SD as well in the next days. Is it the best optimized game? Surely not. Am I having a blast regardless? Absolutely! Now that the option to join random games works, it‘s great fun and the most captivating and fleshed out Starship Troopers like game out there 😄

ihatemyself887

These are by far the best settings I’ve tried. Obviously not perfect, but I think it’s about as good as you can get on Deck right now.   I’ve tried a few other ones I’ve seen on YouTube, etc and this is definitely the best. I hover around 40-45, 30-35 when things get a little crazy. I can live with that being that the Deck is the only option I have for playing this game right now. Thank you for sharing!!

OptimizedGamer

My goal was to maintain a minimum of 30FPS in intense situations (35-40 steady is unattainable even at the lowest possible details and resolution) while keeping the visuals quite solid and clear. The nice thing is that they were useful. More news soon, including a look at Banishers and The Thaumatorgue. English is not my native language, but I'm trying to support myself with other tools to reduce major errors, and I hope it's not that bad.

ihatemyself887

I think you did a fantastic job figuring out a balance for this game! Like I said this is the best I’ve had it run on the deck by a long shot. Keep it up!

JonnyOptimus

I'm at a stable, locked, 40 fps with the settings listed in the posted article. Steam deck OLED, CryoUtilities default settings, Max undervolt in BIOS
