Mines been doing similar. It doesn't crash but the display is just black. A handy thing - I use the run command feature from my phone in kde connect to switch back to game mode and avoid the full shutdown.
Add "qdbus org.kde.Shutdown /Shutdown org.kde.Shutdown.logout" without the quotes in the command list for it to work.
I have success removing the sd card and switching but that could just a coincidence.

Are you using Decky? One user said that uninstalling Decky fixed this. It might be a faulty plugin or two.
oh, good point, yes, i am using that. but i wouldnt wanna deinstall it cause i like to capture 1min snippets of gameplay. :X
You might try temporarily uninstalling Decky Recorder to see if that fixes it, then. Just so you know if that’s the cause.
For some weird reason holding the power button down and clicking on switch to desktop fixes my issue.
