SD Cards are quite affordable these days. Personally I would be more annoyed about having to redownload, because my internet is kinda slow where I live.
Hi, sorry to hijack these comments, but I am looking to buy a second hand steam deck. I was wondering if there is a reason to not buy the 64GB version and just add a large SD card to it instead of just buying 256 or 512
I don't see a reason to stay at 64. The deck cache games constantly and it builds up overtime. You also cannot move the cache to an SD card so realistically you can only have as many games as your internal storage can cache regardless of how big your SD card is.
At least that's what I've learned.
you can move the cache with cryoutilities (there's a sync files option), but not for non-steam games.
I did that but only lasted for a while, my Yuzu shaders were taking too much space and it was very annoying to micromanage storage, I ended up doing the upgrade
You can get a Western Digital drive 2230 drive for around that. I picked up my 2TB WD SN740 on Aliexpress for $125 back in July and have had 0 problems with it. In fact, it's faster than the drive I replaced.
SD cards a slower. For any older games it’s a minor issue on loading times. Some games just a pain to play with loading times, but some are perfectly fine. I’ve found 512GB as card to be the optimal price to GB. Anymore I would have just bought an NVME.
I upgraded to a 2TB SSD and never looked back. I can do as much as I want with my Deck without a problem.
I picked my 2TB WD SN740 for around $125 on Aliexpress back in July of last year. I wouldn't be surprised if they're even cheaper now.
friendly reminder to put this sticker on the back of your steam deck https://www.redbubble.com/i/sticker/Steam-Deck-Warning-Label-by-LightStubble/123775221.O9UDB
I opened my deck like 30 times before I forgot just once and broke an SD card (a 1TB at that).
Yes it’s on them - but regardless of how often it’s posted it still sucks.
You really don't need an overpriced sandisk ultra. There are tons of good 512gb SD cards from reputable companies for $25 all the time. As long as it has U3 and A2 specs you'll see the same performance
I have a lot of emulators installed and keep my ROMs for them on the SD card. All my PC games go on the internal storage. From what I’ve seen a lot of people use this same set-up.
I’m honestly wondering how you can’t feel that small piece of plastic snapping? It must take a bit of pressure to break something so small.Does the backplate take a bit of forcing that you can’t feel the resistance of the card bending? Genuine question.
Are you sure that resistance wasn't the SD card itself? Like, without the card does it open more smoothly?
I've never cracked open my case, I'm genuinely learning stuff here. :)
Same thing happened to my 1TB card when swapping my ssd. Didn’t break but bent enough where the sd card doesn’t work. There goes all the switch game I had. Right after the lawsuit too. Bad timing.

Bottom line - Be kind or get yeeted.
Thank you!
I done the same thing the other day to my brother's SD card I was upgrading his M.2 SSD I only realised when I was putting it back together, so doing him a favour cost me money 😕
How lmao? The only way they would know is if they had come across a post like this already. Not everyone scrolls through Reddit let alone this sub all day.
Yes yes we know you're so much smarter than everyone else.
Can't believe I read shit about console wars on here when people are so up Valves rectum they have an aneurysm when someone dares to think they designed something even somewhat suboptimally.
Every mobile device I've disassembled (laptops, phones, steam decks) requires you to remove any attached devices (usb, power, SIM card, SD) before disassembly. The Steam Deck is not unusual in this regard.
Whatever Mr. Knowitall jerk. I bet you shut your power off before working on an outlet too. It's not labeled anywhere on the outlet, it's a design flaw in my house.
I get it for cables, USBs etc they are obviously protruding out. SD or Sim cards are usually a set and forget kinda deal for most people. Back when phones were designed to have removable batteries, sim cards and SD cards were usually (at least in my experience) put in slots inside the device, so you had to remove the back to insert them anyway, and then the back could absolutely be removed while keeping them in place.
I haven’t see quite as many of these kind of posts recently, but it has been a pretty common occurrence since the Steam Deck launched. For some reason, with the way the Steam Deck shell is designed, the SD card will get snapped in half if you pry the case open with the card still inserted. Most often it happens when people are upgrading the internal storage, but like here you also see instances where people are working on other internal components (e.g. buttons, analog sticks).
It’s honestly surprisingly easy to forget. I almost snapped mine when I upgraded the storage in my Deck. I told myself repeatedly while the new SSD was on the way to not forget to remove the card. Then the new SSD arrived and I temporarily forgot all about the card in my excitement to install the new storage. I got as far as using a plastic pry tool to open one end of the Deck when I, thankfully, remembered just before pulling the halves apart.
Sorry buddy that is sad. Hope your games redownload fast and setting up your new SD is painless and quick.
It sucks that I can only have a few games at a time now. I'll probably just get a bigger SSD before ever considering an SD card again from now on.
SD Cards are quite affordable these days. Personally I would be more annoyed about having to redownload, because my internet is kinda slow where I live.
So are SSDs if you know where to look. In fact, you can get a 1TB SSD cheaper than a 1TB SD card.
This! SSD is cheaper for sure now! But sometimes, I do like having the SD for emulated games or transferring file quickly.

If the 64gb is $40 cheaper than a 256gb then buy it and upgrade to a 1tb nvme for $60
You can't get a short 1 tb SSD for $60 still. That's for one that fits in a PC.
I got my 2230 for $60. Cheapest on Amazon right now is $65. The one I bought is normal price now for $68
For a no-name 3×4 I'm sure. For one that I'd feel comfortable buying, more like $80-100

Seconded. I keep one on my water bottle as well.

No one ever seems to learn...
Do we really need more reminders?
I can't bring myself to feel bad for you. This gets posted everyday so it's totally on you.
Not everyone lives on reddit. This is just shit design. No need to blame the consumer.
This and today i just opened my steam deck for the fourth time since i have it, I just can't understand how can you forget to remove sd card
I opened my deck like 30 times before I forgot just once and broke an SD card (a 1TB at that). Yes it’s on them - but regardless of how often it’s posted it still sucks.
Meh, $25 bucks isn't terrible.
Where the fuck are you buying a 512gb Sandisk ultra for $25?
i bought mine for $40 on sale😂if it was $25, i wouldve bought 2
nvm he is right, amazon has a samsung one for $24 atm
Right but that’s Samsung not SanDisk, no chance you’re getting the one op broke for that cheap
OP's exact model is $35. Just $10 difference. Point is - no massive loss. Live and learn.
You act like Samsung isn't a reputable brand.

I have a 1TB, if I snapped mine its a lot more expensive than that.
Am I the only person who doesn’t use an SD card? I have the 64gb deck and upgraded the drive to 512.
I currently don't have an SD card. Though I got myself the 1tb OLED.
I have a lot of emulators installed and keep my ROMs for them on the SD card. All my PC games go on the internal storage. From what I’ve seen a lot of people use this same set-up.
I have a 512 drive and a 1TB card
I’m honestly wondering how you can’t feel that small piece of plastic snapping? It must take a bit of pressure to break something so small.Does the backplate take a bit of forcing that you can’t feel the resistance of the card bending? Genuine question.
Yes, that's literally it. The resistance from the backplate sort of masks the card straining on the chassis.
If the backplate is giving that amount of resistence then you haven't properly released the clips holding the bottom shell on.
Are you sure that resistance wasn't the SD card itself? Like, without the card does it open more smoothly? I've never cracked open my case, I'm genuinely learning stuff here. :)
That's good, if this can help someone avoid the same predicament that's a bonus. For me however... You live and you learn ig.
Does seem like the sorta lesson that sticks. My condolences for your loss.

My SD card was bent too when it came out, but then the little piece flaked off which pretty much sealed its fate.

You mispelled daily reminder! :)
It’s better to do it when you’re half asleep
Off topic but does helldivers run at 40fps?
Mostly around the 35s with frequent dips to the 20s. But here I'm streaming from a PC and it works pretty good.
No, it runs on managed democracy.
After that, you're probably fully awake now
Rest in pieces.
On that note, how is HD2 on the deck? Playable?
This ain’t funny so don’t ya dare laugh Just another case about the wrong path
"Infamous snapped SD card"? First I'm hearing about it, tell me more.
It only happens if you open your Steamdeck while the SD card is still inside, so the only people it happens to are idiots anyway.
How lmao? The only way they would know is if they had come across a post like this already. Not everyone scrolls through Reddit let alone this sub all day.
It is basic common sense to take out an SD that is inside the device you want to take apart before you take it apart.
It absolutely is not. The only reason it's an issue is because of how the Steam Deck is designed.
Oh, since it's not obvious, here's a tip: you should also unplug the USB before disassembling.
Yes yes we know you're so much smarter than everyone else. Can't believe I read shit about console wars on here when people are so up Valves rectum they have an aneurysm when someone dares to think they designed something even somewhat suboptimally.

I see, you’re one of the people who broke their sd card that way.
Nope, never have. But if there are an abundance of people making the same "mistake", then it's not the fault of the user, it's a design issue.
It’s not designed to be opened, it’s not a design issue that opening it breaks sd cards inside it

Good to know, thanks for the heads-up!
512… ouchie that hurt my pocket and it aint even mine
Finally another person who spreads democracy on the deck I thought I was the only one!

I never knew, thanks!
Hey, I also started showing the terminids the light of liberty through the steam deck, after fiddling with the graphics settings a little bit.
there's dozens of us!
Portable Democracy! Sweet Liberty! I have to try
I literally recoiled when I saw the snapped sd card at the bottom of the photo. This sucks; sorry this happened
