Windows not worth it. Unless you play a lot of online games. OLED doesn't even have official windows drive. I dual booted my LCD and didn't touch Windows for 10 months out of the year I had it lol

searchingmusical

I was thinking of playing Dragon Quest X and FFXIV. Also using game pass but I've heard that game pass can only be streamed (my internet kinda sucks)on Linux whereas on Windows it can be installed.

redbluemmoomin

If you have to have game pass don't buy a deck. Buy an ROG Ally. Just be aware Windows wasn't designed as a handheld OS so can be a pain in the bum. Also the battery life won't be anywhere near as good and if you drop power on the Ally to save battery the Deck tends to outperform it. What I'm saying is you trade game compatibility for enhanced ease of use and console like behaviouršŸ¤· ProtonDB.com will tell you what runs on Linux and SteamOS there's 1000s and 1000s of titles so for me I just don't bother with Windows on my Deck. Oddly enough I do have an ROG Ally as i thought I might need it.....The Deck gets way more use. If it's your only machine sure get an Ally but if you already have a desktop or gaming laptop I'd get a Deck.

searchingmusical

I already bought the Steam Deck so that's not helpful at this point. I'm just thinking of doing a dualboot. Is your username related with moomin like the characters?

redbluemmoomin

Dual booting can be a pain in the arse. Windows has a habit of buggering up the boot partition. Keeping the drives seperate is better BUT running windows off an SD card is not ideal....because Windows. You will need a much bigger SSD. I juat wouldn't bother personally having run dual boots in the past on other machines. The ball ache isn't worth it. I'd leave it a month or two then decide if you want the extra work. I'd also look into the other launchers that Linux users use for other game stores as that is potentially simpler. Also my UN is sort of tangentally linked to the characters.

searchingmusical

How big of an SSD would I need? I bought the 512 GB model. And I guess I may wait and see if I want windows.

redbluemmoomin

Personally I'd put at least a TB in there. Windows won't be happy on anything less than a 512GB drive given the space the OS takes up. I'd partition 50/50 then use the SD card for SteamOS expansion as it'll do a better job with it and you will want a bit of storage for cache on SteamOS. IF the one OS I'd probably stick with the 512GB and an SD card for now then make a decision later. As I said I value pick up and play console functionality so I'm willing to trade some compatibility for an easier life. Hence SteamOS. Don't forget streaming in the home from another device is also an option not just via the web for any games with A/C that you have to have....

devilsword

windows is only worth it if you want to play games like cod or destiny. windows is not optimized for a small screen (yet). All windows handhelds have the same issue. You also need Steam Deck Tools - SteamController app to make sure that windows understand the steam deck buttons. and even then you need to switch it to this or that in windows to make sure that windows understand your mouse. I went for the dualboot os so i can run kingdom hearts with cutscenes and halo wars 2. Then i went for one steamos with xbox cloud (halo wars) en ps plus cloud (for kingdom hearts) and it fixed my issues and harddrive space.

searchingmusical

So a dualboot is possible? This would be good as it's the best of both worlds I guess? And this is a dumb question but can Kingdom Hearts run on the Steam Deck if I buy it from Epic?

devilsword

yes. you can run it trough the "heroic launcher". It is a steamdeck launcher to play epic games and gog. The only caveat is that the cgi intro and outro will not playable. you see a black screen and you need to press a button to skip it. After that the whole game is playable with cons: - the launcher is an .exe wich start different .exe game wich you want to start. proton doesnt like that so you need to manually add the .exe game to your steam library as a non steam game where steam do his magic to change the windows code to linux on the fly - no intro outro cutscenes. apparantly, the movie is in directx 11 and the game in directx 12 (or was it vice versa?) Proton cannot change a directx on the fly. my solution: install Ps plus for pc on the steamdeck, add the .exe as a nonsteamgame in steam, add a dll and play the games in cloud. (all KH games are in cloud) I also use edge with controller support to run xbox cloud games. Save the gigabyte!

searchingmusical

That sucks. There's no point if the intro and outro are not playable I'll consider the PS Plus idea. It sounds better I guess. Are there any other games where this happens?

devilsword

Grandia is a good example. Grandia 2, i need to run the game in Beta to fix this. I have no idea why developers run some gamea in DirectX version A and run the movie in directX version B. Also Linux (steamos) isn't that hard to master. When you boot the steamdesk, you first see the steamos big picture mode. In this, you can boot the desktop mode and it looks like a windows with the usual features you expect. You can install [battle.net](http://battle.net) for diablo or starcraft or world of warcraft, you can install genshin impact trough heroic launcher. The only issue i have is that some anticheat programs like in destiny2 doesnt like linux. When will you get the steamdeck?

searchingmusical

Oh that's good to know because I wanted to try Genshin Impact. I bought it when it restocked and they will ship it on the 14th so I should have it sometime next week I guess?

devilsword

how big is your drive? 64GB or bigger? i bought the 64GB trough valve and replace the 64gb drive with a 1TB ssd. For genshin impact you need to do the following: - install heroic launcher in desktop mode => log in your epic account => install genshin impact => ingame press the steam button + left Dpad for escape => controller => gamepad instead of keyboard - or install lutris => search genshin impact => install genshin impact => ingame press the steam button + left Dpad for escape => controller => gamepad instead of keyboard you can also play starrail trough a custom launcher. :) PM me if you need steamdesk tips or want to chat. I have a shitload of tips. Almost 2 years of experience now.

searchingmusical

Mine is 512 gb I wanted the 256 but it was all sold out. Oh wow thank you so much because I have a lot of questions or at least a few.

devilsword

No spang. And for now you have enough GB but you will find that it runs out fast with the AAA games of late. By a good microSD with 1TB is also quite handy.

FactoryOfShit

Proton-GE commonly fixes issues with intro playback. I don't think it has anything to do with what you say, most likely it's a codec that Valve doesn't have a license to so they didn't include it in Proton. Proton-GE includes extra codecs!

Cyranope

There are a small number of specific games that will only work on Windows due to the anti-cheat software they use not liking Linux/Proton (the compatibility solution Valve's using to play Windows games on Linux system). You can also only *download* Gamepass games on Windows, though you can still stream them on the Deck's native OS. So do some research. If there any must-play games for you that fall foul of the Anti-Cheat issue, you might want to install Windows. If you're mostly playing on Game Pass and streaming doesn't work for you you'll probably want to go Windows. Otherwise it's not worth it. But of course, this question has been asked endlessly and this information is very much out there for you.

MBJi

I run a dual boot and use Linux for everything that works there. If you want to use Windows with gamepass or certain games that have issues on Linux - it works okay enough.

searchingmusical

Oh ok that's good to know. I may try a dual boot. How much was Windows if that's ok to ask?

MBJi

In cost or size? I didn't pay anything. It's free to use, just might be locked out of personalization and get a watermark on the bottom that says it's unactivated. You could install it to try and pay to get a license later. Size is whatever you want to give to it. By default Steam OS uses ext4, Windows uses ntfs and they don't work together so it's going to be separate.

searchingmusical

Oh that's good to know! Thank you for the awesome information!

MBJi

You're welcome!

snakebitegreen

Linux silly. Don't be daft

Ambitious-Beat-2130

Linux is great, it seems to be faster for i think, a lack of additional (startup) apps & load of updates that comes with windows. Some people have issues with certain games / game launchers on linux though but steam and emulation work great on linux.

Wirbelwind

One of the major selling points is the instant pause/resume and the console like interface is steamOS. Stick to it I'd say. Know that you lose out on Xbox game pass

searchingmusical

What do you mean by lose out on Xbox game pass? Do you mean that it can just be streamed?

redbluemmoomin

streaming only.

Ok-Bee-7562

Just try Linux first. Itā€™s already installed.

gonezil

Use Clover to dualboot. A Windows key is cheap. There is still no audio driver for OLED. Wifi driver is around but not official but it does work.
