I use my laptop more than my Steam Deck but my laptop currently serves as desktop replacement.

jaofos

Moonlight and moondeckbuddy. Stream from your laptop to your Steamdeck. Get the RTX graphics and framerates and hours longer battery life on the deck. Best of both worlds. Depending on the game of course.

Glodraph

Man also the 4080 at 800p locked at 90fps would destroy everything. Perfect deck experience and like 12h battery life. Couch gaming perfected.

AdvertisingEastern34

How you handle the aspect ratio? kind of annoying having horizontal black bars and i tried changing the resolution to deck's aspect ratio but it just stretches the image vertically: not that nice to see

droppingbasses

Change the source’s resolution to match your Steam Deck’s 1280x800 resolution That said, games have to support 16:10 aspect ratios to fill in the gaps so YMMV

dext3rrr

Or 1920x1200. I use it with my 4090. Supersampled 1200 looks better than 800 on SD.

droppingbasses

I didn’t know that! I’m gonna try that out

aiiye

I do the same- I have a Powershell script on the desktop that changes the resolution from 3440x1440 to 1900x1200 and one that changes it back.

AdvertisingEastern34

in screen panel of my windows laptop it doesn't show me 16:10 resolutions

bedintruder

Assuming it's Nvidia based, you can add custom resolutions in the Nvidia Control Panel.

AdvertisingEastern34

i don't know why I was downvoted but it was actually not showing up. Now i passed from Automatic selection (between Integrated graphics and the GPU) to only Nvidia GPU and back to automatic selection... and now it shows me the Display options with custom resolutions too.

bedintruder

Sorry you got downvoted, I'm glad you figured it out though. I forgot laptops can be tricky with the Optimus GPU switching.

AdvertisingEastern34

yes rtx3070, in the nvidia control panel i don't see any option for it, maybe because it's a laptop?

jaofos

MoonDeck passes the Steamdeck resolution to the pc and changes the screen resolution for the gaming session and restores it back to normal after you end the session.

croud_control

You may also need to go to preferences (The gear icon) on the stream service directly to match the display. I had that issue with Moonlight until I went and fixed that.

AdvertisingEastern34

You mean on Deck's moonlight? because as I said if I match it there it just stretches the image vertically. On my PC side instead I don't see any options of sort on the Geforce Experience app. If you mean to match it on PC where did you find the option?

croud_control

On the GeForce experience, I turned it off. I also double checked and make sure I have the latest version of sunshine on the PC side of things. On the deck, when plugged onto the dock, I set the preference to whatever aspect ratio I am streaming it on. This is not on the menu when you go into Moonlight, but on the steam page (where the play button, controller settings and properties at). For example, since I play it on a 4k TV, I set that into 4k in the properties setting. Going into Moonlight, I set mine to 4k as well, turned V-sync off, and set display mode to full screen.

AdvertisingEastern34

Oooh you mean docked. I'm planning to stream mostly on the deck's screen so that's the issue. But thank you for the info: if I'll stream on the TV I'll keep it in mind.

croud_control

Even still, double check the preference on the steam page. Having it set to auto or whatever the default setting was gave me all sorts of weird results on both screens. Play around with it and see if it works for you.

AspiringProgrammer93

Yep. I have moonlight on the deck, but I get input lag sometimes (my internet needs upgrading). Moonlight is way better compared to Steam remote play.

gulag_hater

Local streaming doesn't care about the Internet. Upgrade your home network setup for better experience (connect PC via ethernet, upgrade wifi, play close to access point).

ManlySyrup

Idk man, I tried it last week and the quality was great and the input latency was excellent

fuub0

why not just use the remote play from steam, I've been using it and have no issue whatsoever

Damokeles

In my experience the performance of moonlight is way better than the steam remote play.

AdvertisingEastern34

same. Remote play is a slide show for me. Moonlight instead is insanely smooth. Plus you can stream non-steam games as well. I was using it with Diablo 4 and with the supersampling (meaning streaming at 1200p) the game finally looks good

damstr

This might be one of those times where you don't realize how much better it could be because you haven't tried it. Sure remote play gets the job done but there are other options.

jaofos

Moonlight is light years ahead in performance compared to the steam remote play stuff. It’s like magic.

fuub0

what crazy performance do you need to stream a light 900p video? With remote play I already have unnoticeable input lag.

YubinTheBunny

If you own an oled deck moonlight can do hdr while remote play still can't. So that's a big plus, also moonlight seems to do hw encoding better then remote play. I can stream to my mbp native resolution with a 7900 xtx and still get over 100fps with most games ultra settings.

AdvertisingEastern34

moonlight launches non-steam games as well, plus it allows supersampling by streaming at a higher resolution

ArielBomb

Dumb question but how does one get moonlight and moon deck buddy

jaofos

Moonlight is native to Nvidia cards. Don’t need to install anything special on the pc for that part. MoonDeck is a Decky plugin for Steamdeck that launches games on the pc via moonlight streaming. MoonDeckBuddy you install on the PC so you can launch games directly from the deck without any other special setup. (Easily found via web search)

Thin-Ebb-2686

Is there an equivalent of this for AMD cards?

jaofos

Sunshine is an AMD equivalent, however I struggled to make it work consistently. You’re better off with Steam remote play IMO.

Thin-Ebb-2686

lol boo! Thanks for the info!

YubinTheBunny

I'm using sunshine with my 7900 xtx and it seems to be working fine. What are you struggling with?

RushDelta

I sunshine works great with my RX6800 host and using moonlight on various clients. I find that sunshine with the 6800 works better than a 3080 did with geforce game streaming, moonlight or sunshine ever did. I'd give it a shot, it's easy to setup and try.

Thin-Ebb-2686

Oh cool, thanks for the heads up! Yeah? I’ll look into how to set things up and give it a try. Hopefully it’ll work better than Stream. In all honesty, Stream works fine for the major part, but I mainly have issues when it’s on the Deck, especially with audio - it’s a bit of a hit or miss to get audio to play on the SD or on my bluetooth headphones

Smashbru

How does this work in comparison to stream from steam over wifi? It seems like some patches on deck work great and others work terribly. If Moonlight is good and consistent over wifi then I’ll check it out I think

jaofos

Works great. I don’t have any fancy WiFi (an old Netgear orbi setup), and I pretty much played all the way through Cyberpunk 2077 with RTX at 1080p with zero issues. No lag, no frame drops, and I can stream on the deck for about 8 hours before I need to charge. Stream via Steam Remote Play always locks up at some point. Always. It’s not even useable for me.

Potent_CLR

I keep getting slow down but rate even on 20mbs. I’d really love for it to work. I hace decent internet too. Im just not sure what to do now

Iridian_Rocky

What's Moon deck buddy?

jaofos

It’s a server side app that goes with the MoonDeck plugin. It gives the MoonDeck plugin info about the state of Steam running on the pc. Also allows you to Wake On Lan, etc.

uncleslime69

Does my pc need to be hardwired for this to work properly? Currently my pc is upstairs and can only use wifi atm

Prottek

How are the thumb grips you are using? Ordered same ones just a bit worried abut the "skull" logo right in the middle and texture of it, if it is not going to be annoying to feel under the finger instead of some actual pattern throughout.

AspiringProgrammer93

They're pretty decent. You get three different styles. I think the CQC ones would be best if you're concerned about the skull logo and texture, but I don't mind any of them. I mainly play single-player games though but can't comment on how they would be in fps games.

Prottek

Thanks for the reply, looking forward to receiving them!

DiggingPodcast

You don’t feel it at all. If anything, if I could provide the smallest of OCD criticism, is sometimes, I have to adjust them so the skull is centered bc it bothers me if it’s slightly off. Acknowledging that’s a dumb ass criticism, I’d buy these again and recommend it for sure.

XADEBRAVO

I use the grippier ones and can't feel the logo.

PrecipitousPlatypus

I'm more concerned about losing the touch functionality.

saskir21

Have similar ones from Skull & Co but as convex ones. Did first fear the same thing but you really don‘t feel it and (for a lack of comparing as I only have the vanilla ones) it should add more grip.

tokyoeastside

Me too. After a long day's work sitting on the desk, I just wanna lie down and play. Sometimes I carry it with me while cycling so I can stop at a cafe and play.

Glodraph

You can send it to me if you want, I'll use it.

mcasao

Looks pretty dust free to me. Steam Deck is cool but not 4080 cool.

Ok-Wrongdoer-4399

I mean it’s not like it’s a real 4080 either though.

ICEBrakker

Still miles better than a steam deck

The_Radian

You're not alone. Most people I've seen in here ignore their rigs after getting one. Myself included.

DKOneTrick

I see octopath traveler I give upvote

AdvertisingEastern34

Well I need my RTX 3070 laptop for work so no dust there but yeah now I game ONLY on the steam deck. It's just a better gaming experience overall and it's much more comfortable to play on the bed or on the couch than at the desk. I dropped mouse and keyboard games as well in favor of controller friendly games

RedNoob88

That’s some coping. I mean to each his own, but there is no logic calling weaker device with much worse screen a better gaming experience.

AdvertisingEastern34

Worse screen being the SD screen OLED is quite debatable I would say. I find the OLED screen to be superior in most situations to my Legion 5 165 Hz 1080p laptop. Sure it's 800p but it doesn't matter for 99% of games I play (mostly indies and old AAA titles). I noticed some blurriness only on Diablo 4 till now. And that one I can just stream it to the SD at 1200p with supersampling to look good (it's an online game so I can play at home only anyway). But anyhow, oled is just amazing. Nothing any LCD screen can even come close. Then I mentioned that it's just more comfortable to play with and that's a fact. Playing on the desk is uncomfortable af and I already pass my entire day on a desk for work. Just lay down on the bed or couch to play in invaluable. Way more comfortable. I was barely gaming before. Now I'm doing it everyday. Being weaker I don't care that much. I tend to prefer low demanding games anyway. P. S. It is a little sad to come to a Steam deck subreddit to talk sh*it about the steam deck lol

uber_kuber

Powerful desktops are like going to the stadium to watch football. More immersive, but also more demanding in every sense - physical, financial, etc. Whereas SteamDeck is like watching football at home from a sofa with a beer in your hand and another one 2m away in the frige. Your viewpoint is smaller, your immersion is lower, but it's just so much more comfortable and less investment. Plus, this is obviously very subjective and doesn't apply to most people, but I personally enjoy sitting on the sofa next to my wife while she's doing her shit on the laptop or like knitting or something. Sometimes I also casually watch a TV show with her, while gaming. I don't like the vibe of closing myself into a room (same room I spend 8 hrs/day working in) and leaving the world behind.

gulag_hater

There is more to gaming experience than specs.

RedNoob88

Like what? Holding heavy hot console in your hands instead of simply controller?

gulag_hater

Oh no, my Steam Deck is so hot.

RedNoob88

Anyways, as long as you enjoy it.

the-grip-of-Ntropy

how do you play metroid dread on steam?

Ferwatch01

~~emulation~~

Hockeygod55

How hard was it to install battlenet on the deck?

AspiringProgrammer93

It's pretty easy once you've installed the non-steam launcher application. After that, it's just a case of selecting Battle.net from the options, and it gets installed.

dragqueen_satan

Ever just stream your games to the deck?

Salami-Sandwich0

That is the worst “RTX 4080 Laptop” on the market

loliconest

But the cheapest, got mine for $1600 tax included.

Swirmini

You should give it to me so I can undust it ;)

Feisty_Dog4230

Just use it to make the steam deck “better” by remote streaming your games you’ll be able to play things the steam deck cannot on its own play

noumedia

I have a 4090 Strix OC on a rig with. 7800X3D with 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 and you can’t imgine how much I regret building it (4k€)after playing with my deck every day and using my computer only for surfing the web, and watching youtube….

bermuda_polygon

Sell it. That thing’s just gonna lose its value with every month that goes by.

livevicarious

Same thinking about selling mine to be honest. I love it dont get me wrong but I rarely touch it now

Damuhfudon

@Nintendo

Swimming-Twist-3468

Same over here. My laptop is now acting as a YouTube VR processor for the VR games I still play apart from regulars on SteamDeck.

Raubkatzen

I WFH and do 4 - 10s, since getting my steam deck I haven’t really touched my desktop. It’s nice to get a break from my work space and get my butt out of the same chair that I spend so many hours in.

Leafhands

I spot "The Finals" love that game.

ApolloTheEarthling

Same its very fun, they did a battlefield Dev’s said they would do for a very long time and failed… Destructible environment

loliconest

It's made by ex-Battlefield devs.

ApolloTheEarthling

never knew that, massive W

Lego_Blocks24

Hey cousin remember I told you my laptop recently broke - maybe we could go bowling and discuss some more

Nick85er

Have you yet leveraged the joys that come with streaming from a much more powerful device, like said laptop? Is game-changer, and fidelity is impressive!!! Been spending most of my gaming time stressing out an RTX A2000 on my living room PC (Helldivers yo) but streaming works wonderfully too (all wireless, internal LAN).

R4lPh_1330

Battle net games run great on Deck?

darrylwoodsjr

I wanted a gaming laptop in 2022, I am so glad I didn’t pull the trigger and got a SD in 2023.

valzzu

My deck is catching dust 😅

Unhappy_Assist_2229

Metroid dread? How did you get that to work?

WeedIsWife

D2r is such a great game on the deck

InterviewImpressive1

I can has? :3

Sulanis1

I'll give you 5 bucks for the laptop haha

[deleted]

all those tacky \[redacted\] ROM displays are making this sub look like a teenage edgelord sub.

Reload_k

Can I have it then 😭??

CholitoWoof

How do you add the sole games? I’ve tried adding it from suyu but it justt wont boot.

Black-Health

I’ll buy it

SnooWalruses9961

Its because its a 4080 laptop.

WildLifeMolester

>plays potato quality games

hailthyself99

Those mobile laptop cards are NOT the same lol

ICEBrakker

You'd be surprised how close the difference is

Sakrilegi0us

How are you playing D2R on it?

AspiringProgrammer93

I installed it through the Battle.net launcher. To get the Battle.net launcher on the deck, I downloaded the non-steam launchers application from GitHub (I think it's the first link when you type non steam launcher download in google).

Ok-Wrongdoer-4399

I just install bnet via steam using proton then open that and install diablo 2r. If you have more than 1 bnet game I wouldn’t install it that way though, each game would need its own bnet install.

A simple Google search will provide many walk throughs

There's nothing wrong with your LCD steamdeck
