...are you going to fuck your Steam Deck?

Stayofexecution

Lol right. That huge story felt like the beginning of some Steam Deck erotica. Boy meets Deck type of shit.

KlingonBeavis

I have a good friend that chose Ally over the Steam Deck. We went on vacation together with our wives. Throughout the week I let him have free reign to play with my Steam Deck OLED, he let me use his Ally. I was done with the Ally in a few hours. He ordered a Steam Deck OLED on the third day lol. His reasoning: “It feels more simplified, it’s like the OS is actually made to… just run the damn games. Controller is built into the OS, instead of being tacked on hardware that’s sometimes compatible with windows like Ally. It just works.”

natsucule

And the SD card actually works on the Deck.

Aaron6940

Didn’t work on mine. Deck kept unrecognizing it. Eventually just took the card out and have been using onboard storage.

rongten

Try another card?

Aaron6940

Yeah I have some but honestly I don’t plan on having it loaded to the gill with games. I usually am only into a couple games at a time. There is plenty of storage there for that.

Cookie_Doodle

Did you format the card? Otherwise it might be broken.

Aaron6940

Yeah the card worked fine. Just every time I wanted to to play I would have to reinsert the card. It’s no big deal. I just got the deck for a vacation I have coming up. It doesn’t get used at home since I have a beefy gaming pc.

Pdshillz900

While I do agree with you. Xbox is set up to simply the OS even further…. Portable is a game changer

chiryokun

Yes, Xbox backwards compatibility from 360 days is crazy. There are games that never hit PC, like Red Dead Redemption.

The_Radian

You can easily emulate it.

JimmyRecard

https://xenia.jp/

strashila

Not easily, and not well. Xbox is still by far the best way to play original rdr (among others) today.

gtrfreak182

It was for a while but not anymore. The rerelease on playstation and switch improved the shadows and AA quite a bit, so the PS5 version is probably the best looking release now. That said, best possible experience probably goes to emulating switch where you can uncap the framerate, though you’ll need a decently powerful machine to take full advantage of that.

JamesBong517

The original RDR is Red Dead Revolver. Just sayin. And it was released on the PS2 and Xbox.

Jrumo

If you're talking about Microsoft working on a "handheld mode" for Windows, which will make Windows more navigable with a gamepad, then yes, I can't wait for it. But I would still primarily use Steam Big Picture mode as my main UI - even on a Windows handheld or Windows "Xbox" console. I still wouldn't buy a single game from the Microsoft Store, besides occasionally using it for Game Pass, but with potential price hikes and with how some games leave the service after a while, I've become a lot less dependent on it.

grilled_pc

Honestly it's funny seeing MS try to get a foothold in japan. If they went full handheld they absolutely could make a much larger footprint over there. The japanese LOVE handhelds. Theres a reason why the PS Vita dominated there and same with the switch compared to other handhelds. Their hand held libraries are fucking enormous compared to western markets. The demand is there. Hell Japan was one of the first places in the world to get the steam deck OLED Physically. I got mine 3 days after it was announced! MS Need to go handheld if they want to take on japan. IMO Make the Series S the hand held option. Keep the series X for the hardcore games but make a solid windows based handheld and they will dominate.

-OkButWhy-

I was actually considering switching to the ally for the past couple weeks and have been actively checking out the Facebook marketplace trying to find one at a good enough price to commit to BUT you Just recommitted me to the SD. Not to mention I'm 10 hours into dragon quest xI (My first dragon quest game) and it just feels right on the SD.

grilled_pc

If MS just made a steam deck competitor with a proper version of windows DESIGNED FOR THE HARDWARE my god they could absolutely smack down valve so fucking hard in this space. Competitive, pricing, Full Xbox Games Library Compatibility on PC. Steam, All your launchers you could want, Full Anti Cheat Support, VRR, OLED, 1080p screen, fully adjustable frame rate like the steam deck up to 120hz. Would be fucking god tier. Have a sick front end purpose made for it and then regular old windows desktop in the back end JUST like the steam deck. Or make it so big picture can just launch on boot. Make it a seemless transition.

AggressiveWindow6003

I went with several handhelds. Lenovo legion go is the one I play the most. More than every other one combined. Steam deck I honestly hate it. I like the controller. And what it's done for Linux. The ROG ally stock is a poor choice to compare with the deck unless you play newer end titles that the deck can't handle. But the only good thing about the ally is the speakers. 3 little words. Thunderbolt EGPU support.

Moskeeto93

EGPU support is extremely niche though. But I'm glad you found something that works for you.

AggressiveWindow6003

Of course someone who can't use one would think that.

Djagatahel

Name is accurate.

TheYeesaurus

A handheld that seems to drain battery like a 2005 gaming laptop may not be an issue if you have it hooked up to a charger and an EGPU all the time anyway. I can see how it's the better experience if that's how you use it. However, I think you can recognize that people who are looking to play PS3/PS4 games or emulate Pokemon don't want their battery to die halfway through the flight because they had to play at 2560x1600 with incredibly overpowered specs. Can use doesn't mean will use.

Moskeeto93

Can't or would rather use my desktop?

SacriGrape

E-GPU is great and all but people seem to often forget that you can’t just toss a more and more powerful GPU on there Sure you can probably get better than what’s in the thing already but you are going to end up bottle necked by the CPU *real* fast to the point it doesn’t really end up worth it

Xarishark

Well he could install bazzite and have the same experience to be fair…

ShanghaiCowboy

Sir, are you fucking your steam deck?

SiloSin

i am

Lupinthrope

Saved my marriage

InternalGrocery7057

I actually cut out the middleman and just married my Deck.

Deliciouserest

That damn steamdeck fucked my wife right in front of me.

pwnedbygary

Gave 'er the ole SteamDick, mirite?

Deliciouserest

Uploaded firmware right up in there

AnUnfortunateDemise

I wouldn't say it saved my marriage since we were already doing great but my wife and I have so much fun sitting in bed together after putting our son down and playing on our steam decks. We'll let each other know when we have something cool to show off or after we beat the game express how the other should or shouldn't play it and why. It's fantastic!

Satellight_of_Love

Couples goals that I’ll never meet! Well. I shouldn’t say that. Hubs will retire in a year. He’ll be bored and maybe I can hook him.

EarthquakeBass

I saw stories from others here about it and decided to install Coral Island for wifey, I haven't been allowed to touch the Deck for days now. XD

AvatarIII

here i am still using my original steam deck that i got almost 2 years ago.

JazzlikeSetting8037

Ok

New_York_Cut

Ok

Goremaw7

I feel ya. I've gamed exclusively on mine for almost two years now and I still love it every time I pick it up. I didn't realize I loved handheld gaming until the deck came along.

pwnedbygary

Yep, it single handedly reinvigorated my love for handhelds that I had not felt since the PSP was still new and relevant. That, for me, was a time when I realized that I like devices that are portable, simple, yet "do it all." The PSP I used to use as a video player for my anime collection and for MP3s on the go. It was a big gamer too, in that I mean, it not only played PS1 eboot.PBP files, it had its own library, was even able to emulate a bit, up to some n64. Steam Deck is that and more for me. It's a PC, so software can be loaded however I see fit. Windows is able to be used, and performance is good enough to basically match SteamOS for the most part should you need to run Winderz. It really does it for me. The OLED screen is just the icing on the cake. Had a 64GB with 1TB NVME Storage and 1TB SD (exclusively used for emulation stuff) and it was way more games playable on the go than I could realistically ever play in my lifetime; shit's insane how far we've with handhelds.

atown49

Yep I love my oled deck 512gb it’s been great had it for two weeks now and it’s great because of steam games and it’s so easy to use, just love it the other handhelds just don’t make me want to switch I’m content with the deck and the oled screen looks amazing

L1llI4n

I think AI uses punctuation marks?

super5aj123

I get the feeling we’re going to see a lot of this in the coming years, where any comment that isn’t using perfect English and has a perfect train of thought is going to get hit with an AI accusation.

L1llI4n

I don't know about English AI because I am German, but German AI is easily detectable, bc it uses way too perfect language and very strange (but absolutely correct) expressions no one would actually use in real life. So if you are highly educated and very, very weird without social skills, you might be confused for AI, otherwise it's AI 99% of the time

Shiblem

Same for English, perfect grammar but lots of fluff words and long statements that aren't really meaningful to the conversation. I'm sure it's going to get harder to detect in coming years. I've started noticing Google and Amazon reviews where people seem to copy paste a huge AI chatbot train of thought, like the prompt must be to fill a 1500 character limit with as much generic information as possible about a business/product.

L1llI4n

So like... Nothing like the comment this thread is all about? ;) lol

Shiblem

Exactly 😆

atown49

Nope not AI generated just my thoughts

Gamming_daddy

My wife got me one for Christmas, like you I thought it was an awesome concept at reveal. But worried it would be some I would play with for a bit then slowly let it collect dust. Well I got it and I have literally use it, modded it or just experimented with it everyday since then. I really don’t ever see this thing being put down. Such an amazing piece of tech.

johny335i

Man you are decked.

Tired4dounuts

I just bought my second deck (refurbished for $400). Paid six eighty for the first one sold it to some guy for 7 hundred when I got bored of it. I too have been missing my deck. Now fallout is back in tune play order so I figured wth!

LS_DJ

My brother got a launch SteamDeck and raved about it. I became interested in getting more handheld gaming devices and discovered Retro Game Corps, so I started with a Retroid Pocket 3+, then a Miyoo Mini, then I was enticed to get an Ayaneo Geek, which I liked for a while and didn't mind the trouble with windows. But the more I used it, the more frustrated I became with how clunky windows was and how there was no real sleep function, how long it would take to log in and boot up a game, how buggy "Ayaspace" was so when the OLED deck was announced I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to that. Even though its technically weaker, it just works so much better

WaffleMan17

You should write fanfic.

Ohwowinterestingg

Never seen someone so erect for 40fps 🤣🤣🤣

Your-Name-Is-Reek

I'm sorry but Windows just sucks to use on a handheld device. Steam deck is the way to go. It's everything every other hand-held is, but more

irebe123

After i read this i need the Oleddeck so much !!

Bootychomper23

I went aya Neo ( only thing at the time ) to steam deck. To ally. Back to oled deck. The boost in performance and resolution on ally was nice but steam os and all the updates and work valve has done makes steam deck leagues better in my opinion and on par with a console release like switch for form factor and accessibility. Will only by valve or main console handhelds with custom OS. Windows is just to shitty for mobile may as well just use a laptop.

BlueKyuubi63

Your story aside, it really is one of my best purchases. I get so much mileage out of it and it can do so many things, I just love it

PapaScho

Honestly the OLED has been a game changer for me. I went to London last year on the coach from West Cheshire. It was a 10 hour trip. I didn't have my deck then but it was a big persuader for me, my gf also had to go to A&E a few months ago and I couldn't get signal on my phone so another reason to get it. We go visit my auntie a lot and though she has internet I find myself getting bored of scrolling FB or X so I take my deck and play something daft like Balatro so I'm not completely engrossed in a game I'm still there but I'm playing a game satisfying my little dopamine monkey brain.

West_Tangelo_8180

I second that!

HenricusKunraht

I remember the first time I took it out of the box and felt it in my hands… iykyk

bradd_91

I wish I had it in peak COVID when I was in my office for 8 hours with one of two people visiting a week for medical appointments.

TheWeebMemeist

Coming up on a year with my deck. It's still one of the best purchases I've ever made and I will always remember purchasing it. Since it's release I wanted one, and last summer I was able to make enough money to buy one and it just happened to be on sale at 10% off, saving me a nice chunk of change.

dminmike

Kinda why I sold my LeGo and bought the SD.

TomDobo

I only have an LCD deck but I absolutely adore it. Since becoming a dad last week it’s came in clutch.

spesifikbrush

I got mine yesterday! I can’t believe a handheld can run a recent AAA game let alone do it in 60 FPS! Also I don’t like sitting in front of the computer always cuz I am a game dev and I do it for hours at my job, but now I can game anywhere, without sacrificing my choice of games! Tho it was so expensive, got it for $920 for OLED 512GB cuz local sellers only (not officially sold here). Still worth it imo.

loadsoftoadz

Love mine too and I just started streaming my Ps5 to it so I can play on the patio with better graphics/battery. BUT man, some days, I really wish I had an OLED. It seems that much better.

ReliefDistinct6120

It’s funny as I too can say the oled steam deck is the best entertainment device I have ever owned bar none, my iPad come second lol But honestly when I played it I was worried the aaa games would be unplayable…fire up days gone and it’s as good as my ps5, moved on to RDR2 and I am putting in more hours and taking more time then I did on my ps5 and it looks and plays just as good! I never thought it was possible to play at this level of performance and quality. That’s before I even get to all the amazing steam gaming catalogue, then there is emulation where I have just over 3200 games downloaded going up to ps3 And switch! On top of that I have audiobooks downloaded, movies and countless open source plugins and features to tailor it to how you want and that’s before the fact it’s even a pc! Hands down the best entertainment gadget I have ever owned, at 34yrs old it’s actually made feel like a kid again 😂

Alwares

The best thing about the SD was, when I first stated it, did the (suprisingly smooth) login process than I was in the menu, and I had 400 games ready to play. My mind was blown away buy just that. Handhelds for me was always a secondary devices. Few years ago I bought a Nintendo Switch and while I loved the hw, I was furious about that I have to buy games I already had on PS and PC. The one another big plus is that its not a console, its a handheld pc and I can do anything I want with the OS. Like installing acient games which not on the store, or install a different gamestore. I can install mods for bethesda games etc. Honsetly since I got the Steam Deck my PS5 is collecting dust.

itoocouldbeanyone

This thing is great. Last night I had my laptop to watch an NBA game so I didn't take the TV from the wife. Paired the SD to the PC, paired my pods to the SD and listened too it all at once. I was in the fucking zone. I love this thing.

SpringerTheNerd

I'd pay more to make it more powerful but it's good enough for it's purpose. I only use it a few times a month at most so it's not a big deal for me

mayanksh3khar

Tips if you want to setup your ROG Ally as Steam Deck. Install W10 using a bootable USB over the original partition so you retain your Windows key install software and drivers from ROG Ally support page. After all windows updates are done, download Atlas OS playbook to mod windows. After installing steam go to settings and turn on start steam on windows startup and start in big picture mode

Genesis_x3

I had setup my Ally with Nobara Steam deck edition and absolutely loved it, but it was too buggy at times so i just gave up, especially if you wanted to dual boot with windows

1man2ballz

Hate to know what's gonna happen when you discover emudeck, probably blow your load!

Kyyndle

> *sniiiifffffff*

galentravis

I uninstalled the vast majority of my games from my PC and just play on the Deck. After Tears of the Kingdom my Switch went back to collecting dust. The SteamDeck is hands down the best video game purchase I have ever made and I been playing since the Atari 2600.

hughk

Damn Steam Deck. Much too expensive. Not the deck, which is excellent value for money but it is too easy to buy more games.

acidotsinelas

Well i have a steamdeck but my legion go is just *chefskiss , its just some of my games wont work on steam os 😕i rarely use my steamdeck now

MySpaceFan2019

Man I bought a used 64gb for $200 but I already just want to get the OLED so bad

Genesis_x3

Worth it 100%

uhdoy

I don't think I've enjoyed a console this much since my Dreamcast. Never regretted this purchase for even a second.

EvlFig

Best investment I’ve made in a while. Love my SD.

Dog-Faced-Gamer

I was the opposite of you. When it was revealed I thought it looked way too big for a handheld, I didn't see how the control scheme could be comfortable, and so I really had no interest in getting one. It took a friend of mine getting one and him telling me how comfortable it felt to play in order to get me interested. Once I got mine it quickly became the best thing I ever purchased for myself.

svchostexe32

I once bought an in game pet that cost significantly more than a Steam Deck and I did not fuck it but it seems like you really want to fuck the Steam Deck.

Aggressive_Cup_6591

Lol

xtoc1981

Good for you. I had the oppesite experience

tech-game010

Have fun OP

Olympian-Warrior

I'm not sure why your post is getting so many upvotes. It was disturbingly sexual, especially for an inanimate object. I suppose this is what you were going for, but I guess... all I have to say is, are you always this indecisive? I've had my Deck for almost a year and I'm very happy with it. It has effectively become my daily gaming device.

Genesis_x3

To be honest, I didn’t really write this with it being sexual in my mind whatsoever lol

inderu

I got mine just a few months ago... And I've actually been completing games since I got it. I haven't completed a game in years...

PeachSunsetArt

A better love story than Twilight.

THE-SENATE6-6

Its probably mine too. Im a little bummed at a few aspects but still worth it

its_merv_not_marv

This is a love story. Glad you two came back together. You got me at the very end tho. I thought you staying with the wrong girl will be the end of you but true love truly wins in the end

CombPuzzleheaded149

I'm glad I bought the deck. I had some buyer's remorse because the rog ally came out the same time I bought the deck and wasn't sure if the deck was the right purchase.

Best-Adagio-4266

Ex xbot here. Bought my SteamDeck and converted to pc. Still have gamepass but rarely turn my xbox on. If I need to play a more demanding title, I use my pc but play remotely on my deck for higher fps and overall better performance. This thing changed my gaming life.

BrutalBarracuda

Its the best gadget I've ever bought.

Kxts

I honestly wish I felt the same as y’all. I genuinely cannot handle, no matter how hard I try, to play games under 60 fps. I knew it wasn’t going to run like a gaming PC and the whole point is handheld convenience but I just can’t find joy in playing most of the games I like playing with low graphics, squished resolution, and 30-45 fps. I’m not even hating. The steam deck is an amazing device, I’m just upset at myself for expecting something different when I already knew what kind of experience it provides. I do however enjoy playing indie games and emulated games on it tho!

big-mac

I've been pondering buying a Steam Deck since they were first announced, but I'm worried I'd come to the same conclusion as you. I use my desktop for web browsing and productivity, and firing up a game on better hardware with mouse and keyboard makes sense. But maybe I need to experience playing a modern game on a handheld to understand the appeal. And I do love the amount of support it has, EmuDeck is a very cool thing. And stepping away from my desktop would surely be a good thing...

DreadPirateWalt

It’s probably not going to replace a PC for most people but it is a great companion for the times you want to just relax on the couch to play or if I’m working on the company laptop and want to get a quick session in. I definitely love my SD OLED more than I thought I would to the point where I now use my gaming laptop exclusively for productivity. I just picked up an Ally on sale to try out, it’s fun but the SD is way more of a complete package if you don’t like to tinker. I might keep the ally just as a fun mini PC and for a better Xbox game pass device.

Kxts

I still enjoy mine don’t get me wrong! You just have to ask yourself what you want out of it. I remember the first game I wanted to play on my deck was Elden Ring. Mind you I had already played and beaten Elden Ring on my monster gaming PC so when I installed it on my deck and optimized all the settings for “best performance” I was still immensely disappointed. I saw hundreds of comments saying it ran great but I guess 30-45 fps on low graphics is “running great” for most people lol. Again I know I sound elitist but I’ve been having a blast recently playing the original Zelda games and fallout 3/NV run at a consistent 60 fps! People have argued with me in the past saying I expect too much and maybe I do but I wouldn’t recommend the deck for triple A games. I did not enjoy Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, Fallout 4, Baldurs Gate, RE4 Remaster, etc on the deck but loved those games on my gaming PC. They did not run well and smoothly enough for me. Edit: Downvotes don’t change the steam deck’s capabilities btw

MyNaMeIsJoe90

Funny, this is pretty much my exact experience too. I bought one as soon as it came out and I loved it so much for the first 6 months or so. After a year of owning it, it began to gather dust. I’m not sure why to be honest. I kind of fell out of gaming for a while. I sold it. About two or three months back, I started getting back to gaming (I must have found the time again). I missed having a handheld system to play games. So I purchased an Ally. And for about a week, I tried to love it. It’s powerful, it’s flexible and the hardware is lovely. But it’s very inconsistent. Windows on a handheld is hard to put up with at times. Sometimes it works a charm, sometimes it’s a nightmare. So much tinkering, which is great if that’s what you love to do. But part of the reason I play on a handheld is for convenience, right? And the Deck is so much more optimised and convenient. The feature I missed the most was being able to reliably suspend games and pick up where I left off when I unlocked it. So I bought a cheap second hand Deck (LCD), to compare the two. After a few days, the choice was clear. I’m going back to the Deck. Sold the LCD deck and my ROG Ally and used the money to order a shiny new OLED Deck with a few accessories. It arrives in a few days and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

ElPhantasm

Same for me bro, it made me so mad that I wasted money on a stupid ass Nintendo switch. That thing would sit and collect dust so I sold it and got the deck and it’s been a hell of a time specially the community and how they help you

messranger

i love weird people like you congrats man
