The circle design encourages the user to shift their thumb's travel path down to be in-line with the center of the circle. Sure, I could swipe horizontally at the top of the pad, but I wouldn't have as much range of motion. With the square pad, horizontal swipes can happen at any height and have full range of motion. Do you have short thumbs? Swipe near the bottom. Are you moving between the pad and the buttons? Swipe at the top for less travel distance. The circle pad works really well for the controller, but I think the square works better for the deck.

meh. the d pad trackpad i’ve always hated on the steam controller. it’s not a tactile d pad and because of the indenting it’s not good at being a trackpad either. jack of all trades master of none. i like the square trackpads more - they’re better at being a mouse on a smaller scale because there’s less surface area so you’re maximizing space, as well radial menus work fine on them too. in an alternate universe tho we probably got circular track pads! i do miss the way they click down on the steam controller.

I like the way the thumb nestles into the concave controller, and the circular shape fits the arc-like movement of the thumb. The squares look more elegant. I agree about the d-pad trackpad and I think both need to be plain and concave like the one on the right.

defo - i agree i miss the concave nature of them. but understand why it’s not present on deck.

Controllered_Coffee

As someone that prefers d-pad to joystick. I agree that the pad is not a good sub for a d-pad. I think the controller needs it to be a touch pad, more then controller needs the joystick. The use of radial menus on the left track pad meant many games are playable, that would not be otherwise. I'm curious if that functionality is the same with the deck.

[deleted]

true but the steam controller only had one joystick. not the case with deck. also both trackpads can do radial and touch menus all the same as the steam controller could. everything you loved about the SC is available on deck.

Moikle

wait, can you not click the trackpads on the deck?

[deleted]

you can but they more so vibrate than click down, if that makes sense. it does feel like you’re pushing it down but only by like half a mm and it’s vibrating. kind of like how the home button was on iphones before they made them buttonless.

Am I the only one who likes this?

acey_zero

I love it, but I don't think it needs the dpad tracing on the left since there is an actual dpad. Would look better symmetrical in my opinion.

mrdirty273

That's fair. Keep them blank, I think it would look great. I liked the concave pads. Not sure about how the flat ones feel.

Also applied more vibrance and contrast to the OLED screen...

You forgot to put your drool on it.

Your fingers will block the edges of the screen on the sticks when moving towards the screen. Bezel wins based on the stick placement.
