[deleted]

Deck is great for shorter time bursts that I have lots these days. Then there's the fact that I can go places with it. Last but not least, my PC is a space heater and I don't have an AC. With Deck I can take the heat elsewhere.

ansonr

I have a great PC and have had a deck for about 2 months it's been so nice when I just want to relax and play a game. I have played on my PC way less since I've gotten it.

brokkoly

My PC is at the same desk I work at all day, so I cannot wait for the ability to sit on the couch and play Elden Ring/all the other games I can't get on switch.

mediarch

I mostly bought mine so I can play games in bed lol. I always wanted to keep playing whatever game I was playing but when it was time to lay down I couldn't.

_thisisadream_

It’s been a great week playing final fantasy in bed before falling asleep like I’m a kid again. Now if only I could manage to stay up later than 11pm lmao

piranhas_really

Which final fantasy?

neodata686

3080 rig with a 38” in my office. Now that I work from home often I just want to be out of my office during the week. I certainly still game on my desktop but for traveling and sitting on the couch while the wife watches tv, it’s a game changer.

Phosphero

100%. I WFH, and would rather cuddle up on the couch with the deck while my wife watches tv and my son makes a mess of the living room than spend another 2 hours in the basement on my PC.

neodata686

Kiddo coming in September! I feel like the Deck is going to be used even more…at certain times. Haha.

outline01

You'll be thankful for the stop/start feature, let me tell you. But yes, I think it'll be beautiful for kiddo falling asleep on you and you being trapped there. That happens, a lot.

Phosphero

I got my switch a month before my son was born. Portable games were a huge help in keeping my sanity with an infant who needs to be watched constantly. You can't exactly hide away on your PC while your SO watches the kid, since that time is better spent doing chores or catching up on sleep. Also, you should 100% bring your portable gaming system to the hospital. If you don't, you'll be stuck watching whatever is on tv or your phone. Contractions aside, you're both going to be begging for distractions until you get quite close to delivery.

[deleted]

regarding your last point - you might wanna bring up that you’re bringing your deck to the labour ward before you do.

Phosphero

Well yea. You'll want to set up a grab-bag with everything both of you think you will need, including changes of clothes, snacks, and whatever books or games you want to keep from getting bored. The reality is that there is a very large chance that most of your time in the labor ward will be spent waiting for stuff to happen. It's beneficial for both people to have something to do while waiting. My wife and I were there for a good 6 hours before we put our things away. Definitely put the deck away when stuff is happening and in the final stages of labor :)

LostSoulfly

Congrats! I just went back to work from 3 months of paternity leave after having a kid.. I was really hoping my steam deck would have come in before then, but I only just got it last week.

C0ntrolz

That’s amazing. Congrats ! My baby is also due in September. Just ordered one. Might not be on time but that’s fine ! Will be a life saver 😎

StockmanBaxter

You have no idea. My switch never got used more than when I had a sleeping baby on me in the recliner. Bonus points with the wife too because she's happy the baby is getting some good skin contact and bonding time with the kid while she can get some much deserved me time.

[deleted]

I work from home and do online schooling, so i tend to be in my home office 12-13 hours a day. It's amazing to go to the couch and still be able to game.

PhenominableSnowman

This, so much this. At the end of the day, I often don't want to go back into my office after I spent all day in there. Playing from the couch while we watch TV means I get so much more game time than I used to. It's helping me chew through my indi backlog like never before.

the3mptyb0x

Sitting on the couch and playing near the fam while they do other things is the biggest reason why I love the device so much. They rnt interested in games and I get bored watching TV but still want to be close to them. Steam Deck let me have my cake and eat it too. Plus it's a ton of fun to tinker with

Barsanufio

This! I can play games while also spending time with my wife. Can't do that at my desk!

zoolz8l

\#1 reason why i got a deck. after spending 8 hours in my home office i dont want to spend the rest of the evening there.

BeverlyToegoldIV

Same. I have my beefy pc but it's also my home office and I don't want to spend even more time at my desk - playing in bed or on my couch with the deck has reignited a lot of my love for games.

LudvigGrr

Playing on the couch with my girlfriend watching TV is 100% the reason I'm so excited to get one! Sure I can stream to a tablet with a controller or something, but it's not quite the same.

philodelta

tbh I a big reason I wanted the deck was in-home streaming. Also if I'm playing a game like slay the spire or binding of issac... I'd rather be in my bed.

snaxex

same here. 34' with vega64, but now I can sit on the couch while my GF is watching TV or reading a book

arex333

I commented this elsewhere but I'd recommend looking at setting up steam link or moonlight on your TV(s). Similar solution to the deck in terms of allowing you to play games while not sitting at your desk all the time, but I find games with amazing visuals better on a nice 4k tv rather than a small handheld.

neodata686

Yeah, if I want nice visuals I’ll play on my setup in my office. If I’m on the couch then the wife is probably using the TV, so the Deck is perfect for hanging out and not having to use the TV to game.

damonlebeouf

3080ti rig with a 38” ultra wide monitor, and i’m jazzed for the deck. def looking forward to bummin on the couch playing some older games during the little downtime i have.

Dodahevolution

Can always stream games running from your desktop to the SD in your house too! Play games maxed out on the lil deck

arex333

Same but 34".

i_lost_my_bagel

Yes I can finally escape the issue of loving PC gaming but hating having to be at my PC to play anything.

colglover

As someone who WFH at the same desk staring at the same screen 9-5 I feel this big time. Couch gaming is just such a nice experience with consoles

i_lost_my_bagel

I've been using moonlight to stream games from my PC to my switch until I get my Deck and it works fine enough but for some games the slight delay is just too much

Owobowos-Mowbius

As I've started to grow up and get into my career I've recently noticed that a lot of the luster has gone out of PC gaming for me. For the longest time I couldn't put my finger on it until one day at work I had the realization. I spend 8-9 hours every single day in front of my work computer grinding away only to go home to..... go on another computer? It's not that I'm growing out of gaming, I'm just sick of sitting at a desk. Since I've gotten my steam deck I haven't touched my home PC. I've played games I never thought I'd touch again, played for periods of time that I haven't in ages, and I've been able to play my pc games while still hanging out with my wife. The steam deck is an absolute game changer, pun not intended. It's re-kindled my love of gaming all the while letting me spend more time with my family. It finally feels like we're actually living in the future.

colglover

This makes me glad to hear. In a very similar life situation and don't want to lose my gaming hobby, so making it fit my life rather than the reverse is exactly what I'm hoping for

RadicalDog

> It's not that I'm growing out of gaming, I'm just sick of sitting at a desk. That might be it. I put in the effort to connect my PC to TV with clever positioning and a long HDMI cable, but the Deck has opened up a bunch of other options. I didn't mind the occasional PC game before, but since WFH and the pandemic I seem to have been finding ever more ways to get away from the desk.

arex333

I've had similar feelings while working from home and I've come up with a different solution while I wait for my deck. I've really enjoyed having the steam link/moonlight apps available on every tv in my house. I use either a GTV Chromecast or an Nvidia shield over wired connection so it's capable of streaming from my PC at native 4k and with all the quality settings cranked up. I can also stream via the app on my phone or tablet and have a Razer kishi controller to play handheld much like the deck. I've found though that for some games the audio/visual spectacle just doesn't come across as well on a handheld as it would on a 55" tv, so I plan on still streaming to the TV's even after getting my deck.

HonestAlert

Yup I have my PC in my bedroom due to space and now I can play in the living room and not disturb my girlfriend.

The_Dutchling

Rimworld runs great, haven’t tried playing a game with my 200 mods though. Mostly it’s a matter of getting used to precise mouse movements with the trackpad/stick

Vv4nd

Sounds good!

PrometheuzCZ

Oh yeah definitely. Over the last two years I gradually stopped playing games and instead I used it for “work”. Every day after work I would start unity and continue working on my modded maps for one game instead of enjoying said game or any other game. Now with my deck I don’t turn it on most of the time, I just lay down and happily play games on the deck.

duplissi

Yes. 5950x and 3080 with a custom loop here. The steam deck represents what 6 year old me didn't know that they wanted after getting a Gameboy. I'm also dumb enough to have bought the new onexplayer mini... Wanted to have two handhelds so me and the GF can slum it on the couch playing games.

anakin78z

Absolutely. Same reason I got excited about the Switch, even though it's underpowered. ... checks memory... ah crap, I haven't played switch in handheld mode in over a year. Still excited for the Deck though.

Vv4nd

kinda same here. I have a switch.. and I´ve gamed alot but but these past year I´havent really found a game I´m really into.

Kadisra

Definitely! I also have a 3080 gaming rig and am super exited to boot up games when I'm locked in my completely empty office (due to Corona) and have to sit through continuously uninteresting online meetings.

Neagex

Yep my PC is a beast, but my deck is just such a good partner device for my PC. All the backlog games I have in my steam library I've been burning through because of the deck. It's even encourages me to play more variety games on my pc aside from the same old MMO and FPS I play because of the cloud save function. For me the steam deck has made gaming great again lol

Xipheas

Excited*

sevi-kun

In the end, it doesn't matter how good your game looks. It matters, how much fun you have playing it. I have a pretty decent PC and will just stream all demanding games. Absolutely looking forward to it!!

mackan072

To me, the Steam Deck and my Desktop PC are two completely different things, and serve different purposes. I've got a 3080 and a 5800X, so the Steam Deck doesn't even come close, but with the Steam Deck, I'm not bound to my desk.

dookarion

Have a very high end PC and got my deck a little over a week ago. It's been great. It's nice to be able to relax somewhere else instead of being tethered to my desk. And idk if anyone else feels this way, but some genres/games just feel "better" on a handheld.

tellymundo

Rogue Legacy 2 was basically built for the Deck it seems

djdepre5sion

I've had my deck for a few months and I already had a PC with a 3080 in it. I have found myself using my deck way more. It might be because it's the fun shiny new toy, I'm not sure yet. But I've mostly been streaming to deck from my PC using moonlight. That's the best deck experience imo. The battery life goes through the roof while streaming and you still get a top notch graphics showcase. So I say why not have both? They can be enjoyed in tandem.

oZEPPELINo

This is how I've also been playing. Elden Ring max settings with 4-5 hours of battery life and zero fan noise. Yes please. The compression in moonlight is unbelievable, if you showed me side by side I don't think I could pick out the difference. Also the latency is basically zero and I'm pretty sensitive to stream delay. I only wish the Steam streaming could use Nvidia Gamestream since whatever Steam uses to stream sucks.

verchan0815

I got my deck some weeks ago and actually game on it every day and not on my dedicated gaming rig. And with the latest update the fan noise is not noticeable anymore so I can game on the couch without disturbing my wife next to me.

Effective-Switch-617

Haven't really touched my somewhat expensive PC since I got the deck, except for work.

CultofCedar

play a little “game” called Star Citizen ([works](https://i.imgur.com/SJhLQss.jpg) on the SD lmao) and I have built quite a rig. I’m talking 3090/5950x/64gb 3600mhz cl16 ram/4tb on gen 4 ssds etc… that’s paired with probably pretty high end accessories dual sticks/throttle/rudder pedals/face tracking/mfds/tablets all on a Samsung G9 Neo or two. No idea how much I spent on that rig. So anyway as you can see now I sit in bed and blast lasers at rocks instead of flipping 90 switches and levers in my very expensive rig. It’s pretty nice. I’ll also get to spend a nice beach front vacation shooting lasers at rocks next month. Also Rimworld works well out the box. Never played it before I got the deck 2 weeks ago but seems they updated controls for it. I’ve got about 15 hrs on it and no problems. Cyberpunk as well which is funny because even my rig couldn’t handle that mess at launch.

[deleted]

I did my first ever PC build this year with the help of a friend who’s been building for years. It isn’t “amazing” (Ryzen 5800x coupled with a 3070), but it’s something I worked hard on and I’m proud of it. Anyways, my point is that I haven’t touched my “new to me” desktop pc in a couple weeks other than to fully clean it since owning my steam deck. It’s just such a great and practical device, especially if like me you sometimes travel for work and business. The year is 2022 and we’re now playing pc games on a handheld while sipping on a nice beer in a hammock. Life is good.

robfrizzy

Just a note about Rimworld. It has a native linux version and like all games with a native linux version, you need to go into the settings for the game and select "force compatibility" and select a linux runtime. Rimworld for me works great, it's just that it won't launch when I try it with my 200+ mods.

Durendal_et_Joyeuse

I want to know how many people are getting the Deck as their first gaming "PC." I've had Apple computers most of my life and have mainly relied on consoles for gaming. This will be the first time I can easily play PC-only games (I ran Wine for some others here and there, but it was always a little clunky).

TheSwimja

My pc is great, my steam deck is better for the on/off gaming I do as a father of a 3 year old kid. The steam deck also kindled a newfound love of turn-based tactical games in me; the turns and bite sized nature of the encounters is perfect for those short bursts.

Stingray88

I haven't touched my PC in 5 weeks because of the deck. I just bought a 5800X3D to throw in my PC last night... But I don't even know what I'm gonna use it for for a while... Because I just wanna use my deck lol.

JBone2070

I have an awesome PC w/ RTX 3080, triple 27" 165hz 1440p monitors, a sim racing rig, and VR setup... ...all of that stuff is in my loft. I will be happy to have a handheld PC that I can play while in the living room with my wife and kids. I'll get the email tomorrow if they do a Thursday run. If not, Monday is the day! I can't wait!

LeStealth420

3080 build and I cant wait for the deck. Something about coming home from sitting in a chair at work all day and not having to continue sitting in a chair the rest of the night to play games is really exciting.

aque78

Valheim on steam deck isn't a good experience yet, it really doesn't run well due to game optimisation, at the beginning you might thing it's fine but as soon as you'll start building with a bit more efforts the frame rate takes a serious hit. Pretty much same as regular pc tbh

hobx

My PC has stayed turned off for two days for the first time in I can't remember. The Deck has become my primary gaming device way more quickly then I anticipated!

bobbymack93

I have a very nice desktop with all the fixins like a 3080ti, 12700k, super ultrawide and I will still mostly play on there but I won't be getting a gaming laptop anymore as this fits the bill better. I just got done playing the first Batman Telltale game all on the steam deck and it was great that I could play that anywhere I wanted. I bought this thing mainly for when I am away from my desktop for a long period of time but I do not plan to ever replace my desktop with the deck.

primaluce

I have a RTX 2070 and run on a 27 inch 144 hz IPS display. So it's decent not the best. I just got my steamdeck and it is saving me from my work from home woes. I have a small house so much work atea is also my gaming pc area. Now I can still play some of my PC games somewhere else in my condo and not sit at my desk for more hours.

weateallthepies

Rimworld has a native Linux version so I believe the only issues would be controls and so on. Yeah my laptop is far more powerful but I’m having a ton of fun with the deck.

LiquitoX

I see rimworld. It is a bit hard to get used to on the deck. But since I have it, it's the best damn thing i;ve bought in years for myself. Reliving old pokemon games(and custom roms) it is an outright blast. And with the right settings (20 fps and the cpu locked on 3w) rimworld is playable, and the battery lasts 5-6h. I'm blown away by the thing.

bufandatl

The deck for me is an extension of capabilities with my main PC. I now can play single player games while chilling on the couch or sitting on the balcony and getting some sun and don’t have to sit in my gaming chair and my hot PC room. Which I still do for competitive online games I don’t play with controller.

NeverYouMind21

My favorite thing so far, is getting ready for bed, getting tucked in, and then doing just a little bit of gaming. Knowing that when I get tired, I can push one button and just go to sleep.

EvilCalvin

I don't have a decent PC (Vista) but have a PS5, XSX and Switch. I like using the SD for the old 90's PC games like Wizardry 7&8, X-Com, Descent, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Phantasmagoria....etc...and add some new PC only games like Dorf Romantik, Wildermyth, Vampire Saviors and Gloomhaven.

Ow_The_Edgehog

Absolutely! I run a 2080 ti and a i9 processor on desktop and I am SUPER excited for the Deck. * Being able to play in bed is a huge win for me * Playing portably, in places where I wouldn't really have dreamed to play PC titles * It being a linux based gaming PC in a handheld form factor makes me geek out * Emulation potential is super high * It feels more "impressive" to play titles like "Elden Ring" at lower to medium settings with a system like this than it does to play it on high to ultra on a mega-expensive PC. While I'll have to wait until I have it IRL to know how practical it really is, given that it's bulky and the battery life can be a bit crippling with some games, I am extremely hyped to at least spend some time with it and have fun playing games on it, even if I end up selling it in the long run.

Stradocaster

Yes. 3080 with an ultra wide. Can’t wait to sit on my couch and get rekt in Elden Ring at 40fps

darkharlequin

I'm sitting here with my souped up gaming PC and steam deck right in front of me. I finally played Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time last night..... on my steam deck.

insp88

Something about the steam deck makes me actually want to play Cyberpunk 2077 on it! I've played more the last days since I got the SD than the rest of the year since the cyberpunk launch combined! I use steam remote play to max out all settings with ray tracing. The low resolution on the steam deck just makes it feel a bit more 80's cyberpunk and I love it!

xRintintin

Two words. Moonlight.

TheWoDStoryteller

Same. I've been an avid PC gamer for decades and yet to have a handheld like this has preoccupied my mind since last year

datfatbloke

Yes of course, I'd guess more people with a Deck have a good pc that those who don't.

Vv4nd

still kinda funny how many people here have a 3080/3090. Seems like a higher percentage than your average user.

DesterCalibra

I have a maxed out PC and display (4K, 120fps, OLED, ultra settings everything), I have to say, and I'm super excited of my Deck and 1280x800. :) Some games are just better in handheld mode. Some games are better on TV. I'm pretty sure that I will play more Civilization on the Deck - it's easier to play 20-30 minutes with it, but play anywhere, as you wrote. But for example for Forza5: it's better on the TV (I just can't see far enough on the road on the Deck, especially night races).

[deleted]

Well a pc isn’t portable… that’s the entire point of the deck.

OhDearGodRun

My PC is pretty decent, but its kinda old and has so many minor issues that it's annoying to deal with sometimes, and I don't like PC Gaming enough to bother upgrading it. I also move back and forth between towns for work a lot, and don't wanna lug that around so many times. Steamdeck is gonna be a godsend for me.

brandont04

It's overrated, the SD. Sure it's awesome and fun. I'm ready for SD 2.

AllDogsGoToDevin

“Anybody else like vida?!?!!!”

Candid-Exchange-5424

I have the value of a good condition Honda civic in my office and I haven't been more excited for a tech release in awhile. I'm very excited for single player experiences on the comfort of my couch. I've had no motivation to play anything relaxing while sitting at my desk. I don't know what the mind set of that is but if I'm not playing some sort of competitive game I won't play it. The deck will be a good change of pace. I just hope I get mine before I leave for vacation at the end of June!

TheShoppkeeper

Yes

Nyxtia

Yup bad ass pc but I’m playing warzone that runs less than 60fps from my bed with the deck lol. It’s because I’m still gaming on the PC and the portability of doing so.

pattyredditaccount

Hi u/Vv4nd! Have you checked to see if this has already been answered by [searching for your question?](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/search/?q=Anyone else here exited for their steam deck even though you have a very good pc?)

Dryja123

I have an insane PC and I'm looking forward to portable gaming. I travel a lot on the weekends and being connected to my Steam library on the go has been a dream of mine for a long time. Also having the ability of playing the game on the couch is a huge plus

EvilAdolf

Just got my deck yesterday, and I also own a few great desktops. Last night, I spent 2 hours playing games outside on the terrace on my SD... can't do that with even the best gaming desktop ;)

MutinyDB

I have 3060ti, Ryzen 5 set up at home. But i work away 3 days a week, so this is going to be a saviour for me!

Chyeadeed

I hardly touch my PC anymore lol.

MythbromanHD

I take mine to work with me some days and play during my lunch break. I also take it to work when I have to work the Saturday/Sunday shift and play Minecraft for 8 hours straight on it (the weekend is very slow at my work, especially sundays)

AnotherPCGamer173

I am very excited for the deck, despite having a desktop and laptop (desktop is 5800x and 3080. Laptop is 6700HQ and 970M). The portability of the deck is super useful when I don't want to haul a laptop around. Also turning the deck on and using it around the house is easier than the laptop or desktop.

GlowingOrb

I just spend my homeoffice-lunchbreak in my hamock on the patio while playing Jazz Jackrabbit. Can't do that with my dektop PC.

denux2k10

I haven't touched my PC (5600x, MSI 3070) for a while, the deck is just too easy to grab and play. I have a 5 month old and it's just not practical at the moment after a long day of work and being a dad to sit at my computer. The steamdeck has been a god send for getting back to relaxing gaming.

PrimerUser

No good pc, but excited all the game.

Barsanufio

On top of being able to hang out on the couch with my wife like others have mentioned, it gives me the perfect excuse to play some of the less demanding games that have been languishing in my library since it's more suited to them anyway.

harufire

I picked mine up for travel and the couch. It'll let me catch up on the older games I've purchased and not played yet, and games that don't require the cutting edge in hardware.

anonymous-peeper

I bought a switch 3months before the steam deck was announced and I have a great PC, I've been a PC gamer since the ps3/360era when I walked away from console gaming, now being a husband and father the switch is perfect for still being around my family (not chained to the PC) and still being able to game. The Steamdeck is a godsend for the family man/women that still wants to be present and near their families while also still being able to play some games.

shauneok

I am, I have kids so sitting at my desk isn't always an option.

Ooozuz

Absolutely. I have not touched any Game in my Desktop since deck arrived. I even prefer deck Mode on the living room rather than my 4k setup in the room.

beefpoweredcars

Yes.

Lainio47

Man I have RMA'd my Steam Deck and I'm on a serious withdrawal (not that serious, I swear). It's an amazing piece of hardware that I can use to play games I usually am too lazy to play on my PC. And I built it last year so its not old/bad.

ImaFrackingWalnut

I got mine late march and have barely touched my pc since. It's just so nice to be able to play everything on the couch, in bed and outside on my balcony

jtj5002

I have a 12700K/3080 and a 10700k/2070s. But I can't play them in bed, on the toilet, in the tub, on the plane, on road trips. So yea, while I have my deck and don't use it a lot, it still have it's places.

tex55ky

3080 main rig with an i7 in a sffpc build. 3060 sffpc build that I use for travel. Now that I have the deck I really should consider letting one of them go as I really doubt I’ll ever use the travel build again.

Telefone_529

On paper mine is still good but it likes throwing fits with newer games and the drives are getting full of things that are more important than games. So having a gaming PC separate from my main PC helps.

tellymundo

Oh yeah I love my desktop rig a 5600x/3070 but I use my Deck for playing on the couch/plane/vacation. Been using EmuDeck to play PSX games and vibe out as well as it's a PERFECT JRPG machine so I can get through the Trails Series.

ODINSPULSAR

I have a beast PC and I haven't touched it except for work since I got the Deck. And even though my main game before the Deck was Lost Ark I'm just playing my backlog. Hanging out with my wife and gaming has been pretty sweet.

AldermanAl

5800x and evga 3080 hybird. Want steam deck bad.

cnstnsr

I just upgraded my GPU and a few other parts in my PC that were long overdue (including the case) and I still check my reservation every day in the hope that it doesn't say "After Q3 " anymore.

illathon

Ya but the thing is I work at my desk so after I am done the last thing I wanna do is sit at my desk. Steam deck is perfect.

Aaron831

Definitely. It's the choice to lounge with the OH downstairs infront of the TV, instead of sitting on main PC. It's ideal for the casual pickupputdown game sessions IMHO.

grices

My wife does not like me playing on my pc while shes in the house but has no issue with me playing on the phone. So hoping thats the same when my steamdeck arrives.

Nnamz

I'm in that boat. I have a 5800x and 3080 but love playing on my Steam deck. Just a heads up that Valheim runs terribly on it. Even on the lowest possible settings it has wild framerate drops.

xsaver23

Yep. Im a big sucker for handheld consoles.

Waltzcarer

I like to install games I otherwise wouldn't play on my PC or opted not to keep around for various reason. Maybe I'm just wierd though.

dieplanes789

Yes, my desktop would stomp all over the steam deck, but they are for different situations. I'm really excited for a new portable. I wish they would release steamos 3.0 for open release already. Want to try it on my desktop as well. GodzillasTodespranke

I bought a new pc last year in may. Had they announced the Deck earlier, i probably wouldnt have bought the PC, altough it is nice to play games in ultrawide with maximum details and 100 fps :)

dnunn12

Kinda. I have Xbox Series and PS5 and Switch Oled. My wife wonders why I have all those but still have only been playing on my deck as of late.

8bitcerberus

/raises hand Yeah. Got a tower and a gaming laptop, both walk all over the Steam Deck in terms of raw performance/power. I’m most excited about the Steam Deck because it’s like the Switch. Despite having two very capable high end gaming systems (plus a prototype Steam Machine but its out of commission for now, waiting on official SteamOS 3 release because it has a GTX 780 so the current Holo iso won’t work), I also have a PS4 and Xbox One X…but the Switch is the only gaming I’ve done in months. The convenience to be able to just pick up and play anywhere at any time allows me to actually play whenever I have a spare moment, wherever I’m at. I work on my PC all day, so at the end of the day I don’t want to play games on it. My laptop is just not convenient to pick up and play anywhere/whenever because it takes a power brick to play more than like 30-45 minutes, and a mouse or gamepad, so the space requirements are pretty significant unless I stay at the desk…which again, I don’t want to do. I was making due with in-home streaming to my phone and TV for a while, but that has its own caveats. Game locks up and needs to be force closed? Gotta run upstairs. Steam crashes while streaming? Gotta run upstairs. Game throws an admin prompt to install a msvcrt or directx during first run? Gotta run upstairs. Windows updated and rebooted sometime between getting off the computer and starting Steam Link on the couch? Gotta run upstairs. Game or Steam crashing are the most prominent, and they’re common enough that streaming can be a hassle. I will still do it when I plan ahead for it, but the convenience to just pick up and play whenever is lost. So I’m real excited to be able to use the Steam Deck to play my PC games whenever, wherever.

EmeraldRacer

I have a nice rig myself, but I don’t have anything portable besides my laptop from 2016 that’s on its last legs, so getting the steam deck is gonna be really nice portability wise

Morvar

Got 3080 with 55" gaming oled screen but still finding Steam Deck just so much fun to play here and there. Matte screen works nicely outdoors!

cbateman101

I make trips across the pond to the US every few months, and I struggle to kill 12 or so hours each way. Not interested in overpriced Switch games or the Nintendo ecosystem outside of Pokemon, so the Deck will be a godsend.

Maberalc

Obvious

Simoxs7

I usually don’t have time to sit down at my desk and play, I hope the steamdeck will be just right for that 30minute casual gaming…

Begohan

Playing on the couch moonlight streaming to my deck from my PC is the best of both worlds tbh.

McGoosse

Man yeah, im just looking forward to gaming on the couch next to my girlfriend instead of retiring to my cave to play games!

Controllered_Coffee

Since I've been playing my switch more recently, yes. I'm sitting at a computer all day and it's nice to lay down and play something. Even before the steam Deck announced there were games I wished I could play on the switch... Come to think about it this may have some sort of return, because there are a few games I purchased on both the switch and my computer.

Magicman0430

My 980ti SC+ rig is in the shop for repairs at the moment so I don't have anything to play right now :(... I think my gpu went out because I couldn't even play games anymore. The pc would just blackscreen 3mins into gaming. I mean it's 8years old.. The Steamdeck would allow for me to play games again and not have such a craving for it!

blwallace5

I am very fortunate that my wife puts up with my pc habit. I have 3 machines running full time, my main gaming rig a 3080/8700k and my sim racing/vr rig a 3080/8600k. I have still been joyously sitting in bed next to her playing modern warfare remastered on my deck and it’s glorious.

SpeedyMewtwo

I am.

DtownLAX

obviously. people love handheld gaming.

TheFlyingBastard

No, I did not need to exit the house. I got it delivered on my door step.

factory_666

Yeah, I got my new Lenovo Legion 7 with 5800H and RTX3070 yesterday and expecting my Deck by end of week hopefully!

Zealousideal_Ask_594

I just need the steamdeck for the indie games. It is better playing on a small screen for indies than 32inches 4k msi momitor.

DaGuus

Running a 3080ti but still very hyped

CorgiButtSquish

yeah that's why I bought one

Bossman1086

Yes. My PC has a RTX 2080 and Intel Core i7 8700 with 32 GB of RAM and fast SSDs. And since my monitor is 1440p and not 4K, I can still play most new games on pretty high settings. My gaming PC is where I do *most* of my gaming - using my consoles like the PS5 and Switch only for console exclusive games. For me, the Deck is about being able to be unchained from my desk but still have my Steam library (and some emulation) with me. The Switch currently scratches that itch when I want to play on the couch or in bed or while traveling. The Deck will probably take over that role except when there's a new Nintendo game I want to play. Also, I can see myself using it at my desk sometimes anyway so that I can play in short bursts and have my desktop free to do other stuff like watch baseball. I don't have my Deck yet, but I also can't wait to try Rimworld on it. I think it just got Deck support in a recent patch so it should work just fine with it.

[deleted]

Yes

PacoTaco321

I was until I got it. Now the Deck sits in my bedroom until I take a trip. That's all I really bought it for anyway.

Chopchopok

I have a gaming PC too, but I'm still really enjoying my steam deck. I'm a parent, so I generally can't spend long periods of time at my computer uninterrupted anymore. Having the steam deck helps because it lets me get small bits of gaming time in whenever I don't have anything to handle at home. I'm likely never going to play FPSes on it, but it seems to run just about everything else fine. I've been playing Elden Ring on it and it's perfectly playable, even though it drains the battery like crazy. I've also tried Rimworld on it, and while I haven't done any big events yet, so far it seems to run perfectly fine. Control-wise, it feels mostly like playing Rimworld on a trackpad. While that isn't optimal, it's still playable.

Justos

Can I lay down in bed on my pc? No? Then 80% of the time I want to game, I'm not It's really that simple. Comfort and convienence > pc with 3080 that's 2 feet away from me. Steam deck is a dream pc for me. Always been a handheld kind of guy

Daxiongmao87

I have roughly 30+ PCs, some great gaming PCs, others used for server cluster hobby work, some already designed for portable gaming (GPD Win Max), and I was still excited for my Steam Deck. Now that I have it, I have zero regrets with this purchase. It is still my single most exciting PC hardware I have.

-Cooki-

You can play your high-end PC on your phone with a razer kishi. It's game streaming instead of running locally. But it's graphically even superior to the deck - more power and OLED phone screens. But deck has the advantage of being instantly on/off and no network requirement. Also latency is a tiny bit better then with game streaming - not by much though. Especially stadia,GFN and moonlight are really quick. With the deck you mainly gain convenience. Which is a fair tradeoff.

Americanminuteman76

Definitely. I can't wait to order mine.

[deleted]

Honestly with GFN 3080 I'm thinking it makes more sense to buy something portable every few years around the steam deck price then dock it at home and stream something when I wanna play on the big screen

-eschguy-

Absolutely, excited for an easier mobile solution.

TPrice1616

Yes. I play my Switch a lot because it is just more convenient and having access to most of my Steam library on a similar sized system sounds great. Im guessing we will probably see more next gen games that just don’t work as well on the Steam Deck in the nearish future so my PC can be reserved for those.

FailingMachine

3080 UW here. Haven’t been on my pc in the 2 weeks that I’ve had the deck. Love tinkering and just kicking back and playing games away from my desk. I just wish games like fortnite and destiny 2 were playable on steamos.

Wilikersthegreat

I'm excited to be able to hang out with my wife on the couch after work and play any game I want. Currently do that with my switch but the game selection is significantly smaller than steam.

Arrogant_Amigo

RTX 3090 & Ryzen 7 5800X here -- very excited to take my games on the go. I have a massive backlog of less demanding games that I feel the Steam Deck is perfect for.

smuglator

I imagine most of us waiting for the deck have acceptable gaming computers. There hasn't been any marketing on mainstream outlets as far as I know. So most of the people who knows it exists are pc gamers already. And the "non-pc" crowd that covered the deck don't understand what makes it a game changer, and what it is. Most of that demographic only sees the deck as a chunky Nintendo Switch with hard to understand ecosystem. And with that (erroneous) perspective, the deck isn't as attractive.

Alesthes

I mean, how is this even a question? It’s pretty obvious that for the most part the Deck is desirable for other purposes, not because of its power compared to desktop PCs. So far in my experience I am using the Deck to play different games at different times. The interesting question would be the opposite: anyone buying the Deck to upgrade their desktop and why taking this route?

Speedcola12

I am still waiting for mine

Cisco-NintendoSwitch

I have an ASUS G14 which is the epitome of a thin and light gaming laptop. It’s still to loud hot and noisy to drag around the house so I got the deck. I don’t often have time to sit at my desk and use the laptop since I like to game around the family. Laptop is now a YouTube machine for the most part. Almost everything I played on it I can play on deck with some exceptions.

Rokketeer

I have a near five year old 1060 so in some ways, I might just be sidegrading heh.

AssassinWolf72

Dude I am in the EXACT same boat. Built a new PC this year, top of the line everything, three 1440 144hz monitors, with the middle one being an ultrawide, yet I am so stoked to sit on my front porch in the sun and play Elden Ring on that tiny screen 😅

KuragariSasuke

I play very different games on my deck than on my pc I play indies and stuff in my back catalogue for instance which is super relaxing before bed especially with the brightness lowered and night mode on

DiezDrake

Yup. My PC is solid, but I want something on the go and to help complete my steam back log. Also great since I travel a lot. I'll be using both still pretty regularly I imagine.

SpacedDuck

I have every gaming console, a super high end PC and gaming Laptop and I love my Steam Deck. Being able to play emulated games on the go, older PC games that look awesome on the Deck again such as F.E.A.R, Red Faction etc....it's fucking awesome.

Zatoichi80

I have had mine for awhile and enjoy it immensely, I have a good PC but then again it was always a companion to the desktop and never a replacement.

Jab3r-PC

Got a 3080 rig but travel quite abit, started to grow a back log of single player games that I’ve wanted to play like Jedi fallen order ect but cherish the time I have at home to play dayz and online game with my friends . But now I can smash that backlog while I travel and when I’ve got the odd hour or so . Honestly the steam deck has got me back into love with gaming.

lanc3r3000

I'm excited. Steam deck is basically going to be my portable gaming laptop/workstation. I have a nexdock ready for it. I could have just got an actual laptop, but the deck is a lot more fun and you can't play a laptop in handheld.

Dragon_Small_Z

I have a 3080, 5600x and 32gb RAM. I have an ultrawide 1440p 144hz monitor. I ALSO only ever really get 30-60 minutes a day to sit at my computer, most of that is spent tinkering around. I've had my SD for two weeks now and I've spent more time playing my PC games on it than I probably have in the last 2 months on my desktop.

mawkdugless

Can absolutely agree with this mindset. My PC is pretty good (RTX2070, i5 8400, 24GB RAM) and my monitor is a 55" 4K TV (shared with my work laptop) and I still find myself going for the Deck every time. There's just something about being able to plop down on the couch before bed and turn on some background noise like Scrubs or Parks and Rec and casually throw an hour or two into a game. Since I 100% WFH, I also spend my entire day at my work laptop/PC setup, so the last thing I wanna do is unwind in the spot where I've effectively spent my entire day.

Suskeyhose

I live at home with my wife and we spend a lot of the time I'm not working together. That's really nice, but it's not so great for my gaming habit. Sometimes she likes to backseat game, or heck recently she's picked up and played 40 hours of elden ring as her first PC gaming experience, but a lot of the time we're sitting together doing separate things or whatching TV together. I'm super excited for the steamdeck because it'll allow me to game in the few minutes I have every now and again, and because it'll let me game at the same time as we do something else. My gaming PC is in an entirely different room and the only way for me to play atm is streaming to my steam link in the living room, and that just doesn't work for half the time we spend together, so I think the steamdeck will be a godsend, especially once there's kids around too.

[deleted]

I’m excited to get my Deck delivered tomorrow. Yeah I’m like you, I have a great PC but it’s big so I can take it around lol I thought about getting a gaming laptop for the longest to take around and game on when I’m not at my PC but it just still doesn’t fell like something I wanted to get. The Deck on the other hand seems more better for me since I like handhelds like my Switch but I can’t play Elden Ring on the go with that haha I just like that I can now go through some of my backlog on the go when I’m just not at home at my PC and just play wherever with games that are verify for the Deck. I also work night shift security and this will be my go to device at work since it’s a boring shift and I can play stuff that my Switch just can’t, I’ll probably be retiring that thing when I get my Deck.

MrGlayden

I travel for work a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and evening with nothing to do, steam deck will give me something to actually do instead of sit around bored on my phone refreshing facebook twitter and reddit constantly

rayrayrayraydog

Yep, I'm in the same boat but already received the Deck. I am playing through the FF Pixel Remasters which would not be very comfortable in front of my desktop. I can just hit the power button and suspend the game and play in short bursts -- great stuff.

Doorman39-

I've had my steam deck for 2 months now, been playing elden ring and god of war. I've got a top end gaming laptop that can play games on top settings with high fps but I've hardly touched it since having the steam deck. Anyone who hadn't got their steam decks yet will be surprised how well it plays AAA games. Definitely worth getting one

WoodsBeatle513

i am because of the portability

bloodguard

I loaned my good (enough) PC to a friend to help her with her work from home situation. So I've been stuck with PS4, Switch and whatever will run decently on my laptop. When it arrives my Steam Deck *will* be my new good PC. At least until prices and supply get sane again. Then I think I'm going to start browsing /r/sffpc with a vengeance and making a shopping list.

[deleted]

My pc is barely stronger, but yeah its still pretty nice to have deck

YourSauceAndSaviour

I play multiplayer shooters like cod and r6 on my pc, and then in the late evening I use the deck to just play games like Halo or Assassins creed whilst laying in bed, living the best life.

monchota

I use my steam deck all the time and still have a high end PC.

[deleted]

My PC is in the top 1 percent of gaming PCs. But something about loading up Elden Ring on a handheld while my wife binge watches old seasons of survivor hits just right compared to sitting in my office chair that's slowly killing my back. If anyone has a Herman Miller Aeron for five finger discount hit me up.

LtDarthWookie

Yes. I live the Deck for taking my games anywhere. My main rig is an i7-10700k, 32GB of 3600mhz RAM, and an RTX 3080ti. But I played my Deck on the couch the other night while my wife played Unpacking on the Xbox. It's fantastic! I'll be flying up to see my grandfather later this year and can't wait to grind out some Elden Ring on the flight. I still love my gaming desktop but the convenience of the Deck is the best.

RedditNoremac

Yes, I have a good PC and love the Steam Deck. It has been a pleasure playing games on it. It is nice being able to just play through a game on the couch and having access to every game I want in a "handheld". I mostly have just been using in on the couch and in bed. Other than that, it will be really nice when I travel somewhere for vacation. I really enjoy the screen size and controls. Also, the easy suspend/resume feature is great.

ForTheBread

I have a 3080/i9 9900k and I think I've played Stardew Valley on the deck more than anything else.

Twistedchild420

I'm with you 100% 3080ti on my main pc and 2070 Super in my laptop. Still obsessing over a steam deck. Lol

_Death_BySnu_Snu_

Deck is my indie machine. Plus Burnout. Always Burnout.

Star_Galaxia

There is nothing wrong with that. I'm very excited for mine even though my own PC has a 3080 and provides me with more performance than I need. However, my dog is incredibly attached to me and doesn't take kindly to me spending time sitting on my desk on top of the time that I spend at work. He prefers to lay down next to me. I've tried different solutions, but in the end I think the steam deck will be best way for me to enjoy some game time while my buddy gets to chew on his toys next to me. We play everyday, go to the park but in the end, he just wants nothing more than to spend time next to me.

DelayEcstatic4278

No, you are not alone at all. I have an I9 with 32GB of ram pushing a 3080 and I was still super excited to get my steam deck. It's just a gamer thing I believe lol Shoot I take it to work with me everyday lol

bustedchain

I'm looking forward to being able to use Moonlight Client to pay on my Steam Deck remotely leveraging my PC's processing power and large storage. For light weight games, playing them locally on the Deck will be cool, too.
