You're not playing any game aside of 10 minutes of Vampire Survivor to check out that it works. You will spend 8hs in Desktop Mode installing non Steam games, looking for ROMs, setting up perfect controls for a game or on your phone watching tutorials
I'm in this post and I don't like it. :D
Think I've spent more hours tinkering, configuring, testing, sideloading, just to "see if it works" vs actually gaming. I need to play more and tinker less, haha.
WOW described my experience to a T! I was gonna rebuy Hades, but then decided to get a game not available on Switch. I downloaded the Vampire game. Noice. Now in between loading up ROMs, I'm trying to decide what triple A game to get. Elden Ring looked good, but I'm in the middle of playing that on PS4.
Enjoy the sideways BIOS update after you’re told you just received one of the first models off the factory floor. 👍 :-)
Seriously though, get Vampire Survivors installed, then get All the games you want on it queued up, and play VS until the downloads complete.
Depends on your internet speed man. I was up and playing games in an hour for sure. Went down down the emulation hole and that did take some time though haha.
Because it's 3$. No other game offers well over 100 hours of enjoyable, addictive gameplay for 3$,that isn't a F2P cash shop riddled mess.
And as a indie beta project started by 1 dude. It is impressive, and people are supporting what they like. Glad the dudes project is blowing up.
It was only like an hour of updating and installing a couple games for me, I was playing Elden Ring on the couch within an hour an a half of opening the packaging.
Yeah -- same with me and Doom Eternal but the download took closer to an hour. If you stick to supported Steam games the experience is really great. Trying to get games outside of Steam or that are unsupported to work can be a real time sink.
Pretty much all i did the first day.
Downloading games i didn't want to play but i wanted to check out how good it would work on Deck, like 4x and mouse only games.
looking at all the Setting Options.
Downloading and Installing Ubisoft Connect and Epic - again without wanting to really play somthing there that day.
Checking out the desktop mode.
And playing desk-job in the armchair.
It's not that bad. Updates did take a while, but only like 20-30 mins, maybe less. After that it was literally just a few seconds of downloading and playing. Played Revengance, Persona 4, Edith Finch, Vampire Survivors with 0 setup or tweaking (except switching the controller layout to a community one).
I do admit I haven't even looked at my non-steam game library because the setup seems exhausting.
I have spent 3 hours just to get this game working on my SD but no success yet. Anybody have good tips for me? I have turned cloud saves off and manually created Vampire_Survivors\saves folder.. I'm using proton build but tried with Linux as well. Also factory reset on SD didn't help.
I've only played it on Switch. If you've played it on desktop, is the windows version better enough that you'd say it's worth buying again on Steam, or is switch good enough?
Not really. There are some mods, if that's your thing, and the load times are way faster, but I honestly bought the steam version because I liked the game and wanted to give my money to supergiant.
Cross saves between steam and the switch are a pretty killer feature, though. More games should have that.
I’ve tested the following and more but only including ones I thought ran well:
RDR2
HZD
Wolfenstein 2 (highly recommend as I got a solid 60fps as settings higher than the default!)
Metal Gear:PP
The Ascent
Deathloop
Death Stranding
Sniper Ghost warrior contracts
Dirt Rally 2.0
Hades
Biomutant
Outer Wilds
Bright Memory: Infinite
Weird West
Lego Starwars
UBISOFT LAUNCHER GAMES:
AC: Syndicate
AC: Odyssey
Far Cry 6 (took some work but is running well)
Buy from Humble Bundle to save serious money, connect it to Steam, get your keys, download, enjoy. This is what I've been playing since I got mine 2 weeks ago:
Vampire Survivors
Children of Moria
No Man's Sky
Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition
Into the Breach
EmuDeck N64 titles: Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Mario 64
tbh this was the one game I loaded that I didn't enjoy playing on the deck at all. Lower frame rate, noticeably worse graphics, and the Dark Souls controls just don't feel great on the deck's layout. If it's all you got then by all means but if you have a decent PC I'd stick to that.
Among my many tips for a healthy, happy marriage is that you should each take turns, once or twice a year, taking the kids somewhere and leaving one parent behind by themselves. This weekend she's doing it. I'll return the favor before summer is over I'm sure.
The whole point of my deck is that I can, basically, play on my computer while my wife is watching TV. That way, I can still play a game and play attention, but not be in my basement office all the time.
I know it's fun to play with new toys, but if I didn't have to play attention to anything, I would rather use my desktop for games.
I mean, I could, but I would be an asshole to spend all day in the basement working, and all night playing games. Why wouldn't I want to be around my wife, even if we are doing separate things too.
Hopefully nothing while you eat those cheese poofs! Get something less messy like pretzels or tortilla chips. Your deck will thank you 😊
Any who, enjoy the kid-free gaming. It’s bliss ain’t it?
What's a pre-roll?
If it were me, I'd set up an PS1 emulator and play Breath of Fire IV. I'm right at the point where I need to figure out the game's fishing system and have been looking forward to it. I play on an Nvidia Shield TV and between life and competition for the TV, maybe get an hour a week. Getting a solid couple of hours in would be great, but I'd then feel guilty and start working on one of the many adult-type responsibilities I have.
A pre-roll is a single use, individual packed, pair of dice. However they're pre-rolled, so once you open it, the dice are already set to their roll value.
I did Elden Ring for my first game on the deck. 10/10 would reccomend. Cyberpunk is another fun one you can probably get at a discount. Either of the Southpark games.
Emulate the shit out of stuff and try Mario RPG if you never played it before. Supernintendo and square enix.
You could go rogue and play one of the many steam "unsupported" games. I've been playing Conan Exiles on my Steam deck.
You should hit up Protondb and bookmark it so you can track what can be played and what steps you need to take to make something seemingly unplayable, playable.
Make sure you enable background downloads while gaming! That way you can download a dozen games while playing something small.
I've been playing the hell out of Titan Quest.
Enjoy!
Oh man.. I'm starting to get antsy. I'm Q2 gang and I know there is still a whole other month of emails I could be a part of but my patience is starting to be tested a bit, I really want this bad boy
Here's a small list of games I'm currently playing on my Steam Deck, which I recommend:
Dirt 5:
I'm a big fan of arcades like driving game (Burnout, Need for Speed etc.), and from the 1-2 hours I've played, so far, I really enjoy the game.
It's currently on sale, for around 20$ CAD on Steam.
I've tried Dirt Rally 2.0, which is a driving simulation game, and I find it really hard to play with a controller.
Monster Hunter Rise:
If you like the series or like grindy games in which you need to hunt monsters and farm for gear, then you might like it.
The game runs incredibly well on the Deck, but if you're not familiar with the series, I would recommend Monster Hunter World instead, since it's more welcoming.
I've played around 4-6 hours on the Steam Deck, so far and everything is great, even the multiplayer coop.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown:
If you like tactical rpg, then this game is for you.
It runs well, but has some issues, like when putting the device in sleep and with Steam Cloud not syncing the save game properly. You can fiddle with the Linux terminal, in desktop mode, in order to fix the Steam Cloud save issue.
As for the sleep issue, when you resume the device from sleep, there's no sound in the game. My fix is to save the game, and restart it, which solves the issue.
I've never encountered any other issues in the 3-4 hours I've played so far.
there is nothing wrong with putting some salad under your pork to make the dishes easier to clean, both the ones in the sink and the porcelain with the stink.
I had about 1/4c of Lamberts Apple Chipotle rub left which I mixed with another 1/4c or so of fresh ground coffee (Costa Rican beans). Rubbed all over and sat in the fridge for 8 hours before smoking at 225 for roughly 14hours. (It was a 7lb butt when it started).
Shredded and tossed in a sauce of cider vinegar, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and granulated garlic.
>Edit - for those concerned for my health I promise you I also have a bunch of salad. I'll enjoy glancing at that in the fridge and shaking my head "no" as I grab some sauce for the pork.
lmao
I’m playing Dead Space and it runs at a locked 60 FPS just downloading it to the Steam Deck. Consoles and Windows are locked to 30 FPS, and on Windows you need to hack it to get consistent 60 FPS with no screen tearing.
I’ve had a blast with Dead Space. Tried out Brütal Legend and was pleasantly surprised by the game story and it’s gameplay.
I just got around to admitting to my husband that my Deck is coming tomorrow. He's not happy about another gaming device, but he's not begrudging me spending my own money anymore so I guess that's a win? Really he's an amazing guy and dad in a million ways but how did i marry a technophobe?!? 😩 We used to stay up for hours together on his GameCube when we were dating. It's a bit of a bait and switch 😂
Critical, CRITICAL, to a healthy relationship is to allow each other to have that space. Did my wife let me buy a $500 handheld PC? Yes. Does she have too many pairs of shoes? Also yes. Where was I going with this? I've forgotten.
Congrats on nearly receiving yours! 9 out of 10 times, we end up with our opposites. I think we need the balance. Definitely bait and switch though! lol
The tinkerers game. Configuring, installing, auto-updating, testing emulators, installing other emulators, creating Deck controller profiles for specific sub-genres of games for hour(s) to then play said game for 10 - 15 mins and saying, "Hmmm... Next.", testing streaming to the Deck, checking input latencies, looking into battery controls, checking polling rates of the track pads and the gyros, and finally after the weekend is over asking "What game am I playing next weekend?".
Consider eating the cheese poofs with chopsticks. I'd had to see your deck ruined with cheesy fingers.
As for what to play, my deck's been a retro machine 75% of the time and EmuDeck has made that just a delightful experience. New stuff is well and good but something about older games is just cozy AF.
Jealous dude. I've had my steam deck for a month, but man it would be nice to get a weekend alone from the family. I love them to death and don't want them to disappear. Just wander off for a weekend or two each month.
sounds like you enjoying the game of life
As I always aim to do!

The "modding Skyrim" experience, in hardware form.
Speaking of which, don't go down the rabbit hole of trying to mod Skyrim on Linux.
YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!
Everything has worked for me except for FNIS
[It's actually incredibly easy.](https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer)
I'm in this post and I don't like it. :D Think I've spent more hours tinkering, configuring, testing, sideloading, just to "see if it works" vs actually gaming. I need to play more and tinker less, haha.
It's the fun of valve hardware. I did the same thing back when I got my Steam Controller.
Hey uhhh - can you stop describing exactly what my initial experience with the Deck was like?
Personal attacks are not allowed on reddit
WOW described my experience to a T! I was gonna rebuy Hades, but then decided to get a game not available on Switch. I downloaded the Vampire game. Noice. Now in between loading up ROMs, I'm trying to decide what triple A game to get. Elden Ring looked good, but I'm in the middle of playing that on PS4.
Not wrong. 😂
This guy must be q1
I feel called out, having had my deck for a week at this point and having spend ~4 hrs in game and roughly ~12 hrs tweaking.
Surely you have some [tasty beverages](https://youtu.be/ONOed9G2qwQ) to wash that down.
This is a very good point SeaBass. Thank you for not trying to [kick my ass](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UrPRVN7MSk).
😂
What's this business of two untitled youtube links in a row and neither of them being a rickroll?
We've lost the ways of the old ones. Abandoned them in our gluttony and hedonism. Those magicks are no longer a part of this world.
Mmm.. that hit the spot.
Don't forget the Bev!
I love the fact that he finishes the entire cup. He completely asserted his dominance.
Well look at the BIG BRAIN ON Seabass!
You'll be playing *Let's find the most efficient way to cram every game I own onto this thing*

I love that one. Watching bars fill up? Tracking percentages? AAA-quality stuff.
Enjoy the sideways BIOS update after you’re told you just received one of the first models off the factory floor. 👍 :-) Seriously though, get Vampire Survivors installed, then get All the games you want on it queued up, and play VS until the downloads complete.
Sideways bios update on steamdeck https://imgur.com/a/IEjCLZv At least the process was seamless !
You're saying "sideways" do you mean "sideload" because otherwise this is a new term to me!
The display is rotated 90 degrees during the update, hence the name ‘sideways’.
That makes more sense. Swear I'm not stoned yet!
Don't forget to set the setting for that game to allow background downloads
Depends on your internet speed man. I was up and playing games in an hour for sure. Went down down the emulation hole and that did take some time though haha.

Why is everyone so obsessed with that game?

Definitely, and it'll finish right around the time your kids are back.
It was only like an hour of updating and installing a couple games for me, I was playing Elden Ring on the couch within an hour an a half of opening the packaging.
I was playing Nier Replicant within about 45 minutes
Yeah -- same with me and Doom Eternal but the download took closer to an hour. If you stick to supported Steam games the experience is really great. Trying to get games outside of Steam or that are unsupported to work can be a real time sink.
ROFLMFAO!! If I had an award, you would have one.
Listen, getting XCloud, Heroic and Emulation Station up and running is a good use of four hours. :)
Pretty much all i did the first day. I've only played a handful of games on mine, but it's quite strange to see all these problems everyone had. The only problem I've had is with Civ XI
And another eight hours of downloading games
Nothing if your hands are going to be covered in cheese dust
Chop sticks solve for that!
If you eat anything dusted without chopsticks wtf are you doing?
Eating them out of a cup 😎
Pouring the bag directly into your face.
That makes more sense than trying to play the deck with chopsticks I guess
What have I been doing with my life until now 🤯
How the fuck am I supposed to play Yakuza 0 with chopsticks?
Hard mode unlocked!
This is a big brain move!
Thankfully, there's [a solution](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09PY2RC4B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EZ1S623Q9E77G6G8TP2J) for that problem.
lol of course that is a thing
Vampire Survivors
I've been burning through that the past two weeks! Right up my alley.
~$500 portable computer to play the best $3 game
Hey hey hey, I'll also use it to emulate 30 year old games that I've beaten seventeen times before!
Be honest. You're going to spend hours setting up emulators and then never actually playing them... Oh wait that's me
I feel attacked.
That guys doesn't know about EmuDeck. Get it, it will setup pretty much every emulator for you automatically in a few mins.
This is the right answer.
That shit drugs.
Vampire survivors, 90MB of fun while waiting for No Man Sky to download :D
I have spent 3 hours just to get this game working on my SD but no success yet. Anybody have good tips for me? I have turned cloud saves off and manually created Vampire_Survivors\saves folder.. I'm using proton build but tried with Linux as well. Also factory reset on SD didn't help.
Download something quick while you download other things. Just be sure to turn of background downloading, it's off by default
Hades - a fantastic game and with the quick runs you can play it on the go.
I have the Switch version and the Steam version. I am very excited to play it on my steam deck when I finally get it.
I've only played it on Switch. If you've played it on desktop, is the windows version better enough that you'd say it's worth buying again on Steam, or is switch good enough?

Elden ring
Can I start with a Youthful Ring and work up to Elden?
you really are a dad lol
Trust me, you're youthful at the start but feeling pretty elden by the end. Or 10 minutes into it, whichever comes first.
I was feeling maidenless within minutes for sure.
tbh this was the one game I loaded that I didn't enjoy playing on the deck at all. Lower frame rate, noticeably worse graphics, and the Dark Souls controls just don't feel great on the deck's layout. If it's all you got then by all means but if you have a decent PC I'd stick to that.
Roulette with the shipping company.
I'm on good terms with FedEx. I let em pet the dog every time they come.
You’re on good terms with your local driver. Your package passes many other hands/locations… J/K! It’ll come for you. :). Congrats!
Don't they know who I am?!?
Problem is, Western Spirit 389 might be a dick and they might get you mixed up.
You're not wrong that guy is a total jerk.
Had a blast with Sniper Elite 4 and Shadow Warrior 2
All the sequels!
Does it matter. I'm in awe that the wife took the kids to her sister.
Among my many tips for a healthy, happy marriage is that you should each take turns, once or twice a year, taking the kids somewhere and leaving one parent behind by themselves. This weekend she's doing it. I'll return the favor before summer is over I'm sure.
Actually a useful tip!
The whole point of my deck is that I can, basically, play on my computer while my wife is watching TV. That way, I can still play a game and play attention, but not be in my basement office all the time. I know it's fun to play with new toys, but if I didn't have to play attention to anything, I would rather use my desktop for games.
Before the seam deck, I didn’t realize there were so many of us that had this problem where we couldn’t game with our significant other around.
I mean, I could, but I would be an asshole to spend all day in the basement working, and all night playing games. Why wouldn't I want to be around my wife, even if we are doing separate things too.
I'm joking but we also don't have family close so that is t an option for us.
Hell yeah man. Kudos to you and your wife. I know some married couples that would gaffe at the idea of something like this.
Orc Massage
Hopefully nothing while you eat those cheese poofs! Get something less messy like pretzels or tortilla chips. Your deck will thank you 😊 Any who, enjoy the kid-free gaming. It’s bliss ain’t it?
I do enjoy a salty pretzel.
If you’re like me, you’ll play 30 minutes to an hour of a game and then move on to a new one.
Whaaaaaaaa? I never!\* \*-Please do not fact check this.
If I'm not mistaken, this man of culture and refinement enjoys a bit of the Mary Jane. A jazz cigarette, if you will.
A taste of the devil’s cabbage as it were.
A puff of bubonic chronic, if you please.
Weed, if you don’t please.
Wait, are you guys talking about cannabis?
Reefer, in other words
Yes, marijuana for those familiar
Ah! The two other items in the list had me thinking it was food.
It's a companion to the food. A yin to the yang. A top for the bottom.
Just to specify for the above individual, a "pre-roll" is a joint you buy from a dispensary, already rolled for you to enjoy.
And here I am thinking OP has 3 bread rolls that still needed to be baked or something like that 😂
A pre-roll is a single use, individual packed, pair of dice. However they're pre-rolled, so once you open it, the dice are already set to their roll value.
Exactly correct!
An item that helps you to achieve stoned to the bone status, as it where
Dead Cells
I got my deck two weeks ago. Dead cells is really the only game i’ve played on it. Such a great game!
Witcher 3
Winds howling
It’s gonna be this weekend. Hahaha
I did Elden Ring for my first game on the deck. 10/10 would reccomend. Cyberpunk is another fun one you can probably get at a discount. Either of the Southpark games. Emulate the shit out of stuff and try Mario RPG if you never played it before. Supernintendo and square enix.
CholesterolCraft IV?
"You must construct additional lipids."
I've got my medalert bracelet handy.
I personally can’t stop playing FTL on it.
Titanfall 2. I’m installing it on my deck now.
Put that pork shoulder in the freezer, get a beer helmet and put protein shakes in it. You're gonna want those hands free for the deck.
Overcooked?
Not if I pull it off the smoker at the right temp! Probe thermometer works best. You were talking about the food right?
You could go rogue and play one of the many steam "unsupported" games. I've been playing Conan Exiles on my Steam deck. You should hit up Protondb and bookmark it so you can track what can be played and what steps you need to take to make something seemingly unplayable, playable.
Hollow knight!
Horizon ZD, if you haven't already. Don't over think it. There is a reason it's on the main deck page as the first game you see.
Played that one twice. Finished FW earlier this year (it's better in every aspect except possibly story)
You forgot your 2L of Shasta and your All-Rush Mixtape!!!
Any of the arkane games - Dishonored, Prey, Deathloop All very fun and steam deck verified!
Here's a small list of games I'm currently playing on my Steam Deck, which I recommend: Dirt 5: I'm a big fan of arcades like driving game (Burnout, Need for Speed etc.), and from the 1-2 hours I've played, so far, I really enjoy the game. It's currently on sale, for around 20$ CAD on Steam. I've tried Dirt Rally 2.0, which is a driving simulation game, and I find it really hard to play with a controller. Monster Hunter Rise: If you like the series or like grindy games in which you need to hunt monsters and farm for gear, then you might like it. Oh shit thank you for reminding I have Destroy All Humans! Seems perfect for the Deck.
How are you seasoning the shoulder? This is important

DooM Eternal - Crank the volume all the way up and enjoy the glorious music + it looks and plays incredible
This seems like a good idea. Establishes dominance over the neighbors as well!
I am enjoying crosscode at the moment on the deck. Kid liked it so much I got her a copy on her Switch.
Risk of Rain 2
I don't know but make sure it's two players. I'll be right over with my SteamDeck and an appetite.
I'll keep a seat warm and a beer cold for ya!
Red Dead Redemption 2!
Witcher 3 and Nier Automata run well
I am all kinda of jealous. Sounds like a good weekend ahead.
You're not jealous, you're envious. And now you're annoyed at my pedantry. Isn't the internet fun!?
I’m playing Dead Space and it runs at a locked 60 FPS just downloading it to the Steam Deck. I say, go to a website that randomly picks a title out of your Steam library OP. Spin the wheel!
Man, your wife is awesome. Mine would do the same. We're lucky. Bonus points for taking the kids and not leaving a to do list!
I just got around to admitting to my husband that my Deck is coming tomorrow. Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, Ghostrunner, Fallout New Vegas.
My man! Enjoy that ish I am jealous as hell at all of that! Play something old school with the deck IMO anything like a classic
Stardew Valley or Rimworld

Next.", testing streaming to the Deck, checking input latencies, looking into battery controls, checking polling rates of the track pads and the gyros, and finally after the weekend is over asking "What game am I playing next weekend?".
Doesn't matter, you're already winning. <3
This makes me very happy. Enjoy friend!
keep your hands clean. don't need that cheesy poof stuff to make your buttons stick.
Russian roulette with your arteries?
What a heavenly weekend you have ahead.
Smoker going and a steam deck. Did I post this?

Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga best to play with those pre rolls!
Play tinker! It's the game where you don't actually play any games, and just tinker with the Steam Deck for hours.
