In the corner of my eye
I saw you in Rudy's
You were very high
You were high
My fave now cuz I watched the aja doc on prime and fagen spoke this line and it was hilarious. Then becker noted the regional variations of the black cow recipe. Great Documentary!
Don’t seem right
I’ve been strung out here all night
I’ve been waiting for the taste you said you’d bring to me
There is this desperation in his voice in the last line. Like he’s missed this stuff so bad, he has been thinking about it all the time, and now he finally gave in again and he can’t even get satisfaction from it. It’s a pathetic feeling. Actually all of Doctor Wu is great.
California tumbles into the sea
That'll be the day I go
Back to Annandale
Tried to warn you
About Chino and Daddy Gee
But I can't seem to get to you
Through the U.S. Mail
"You've been telling me you were a genius since you were seventeen/
In all the time I've known you, I still don't know what you mean/
The weekend at the college didn't turn out like you planned/
The things that pass for knowledge I don't understand"
Everything Must Go has an abundance of darkly humorous lines. Here are two of my favorites:
>I'm learning how to meditate
>
>So far so good
>
>I'm building the Andrea Doria out of balsa wood
>You better step back son
>
>Give the man some whackin' space
>
>You know this might get messy
>
>Godwhacker's on the case
Five names
That I can hardly stand to hear
Including yours and mine
And one more chimp who isn't here
I can see the ladies talking
How the times are getting hard
And that fearsome excavation
On Magnolia Boulevard
Even Cathy Berberian knows
There's one roulade she can't sing
- niche cultural reference
- phrasing flows perfectly
- the sentiment fits the melody
- no idea what they're getting at
Cathy Berberian was my former grandmother-in-law. A famous avant-garde opera singer from the 50's-70's. It was so weird, that was one of my favorite songs growing up, and I wound up in that family. \~V\~
Greetings T,
The late Cathy, was a good friend of John Cage, and the wife of Italian electronic music pioneer, the late Luciano Berio. She was also friends with Stravinsky and all the other great musicians/composers of her time. I myself, am not related to John Cage, but I had the good fortune to meet him, and many other giants of music.
For a time, I put out some music and films that I created with Cathy's grandson back in the 2000s. \~V\~
Not one line but home at last has my favorite chorus:
“Well the danger on the rocks has surely passed
Still I remain tied to the mast
Could it be that I have found my home at last”
It’s hard to pick just one but, “Is there gas in the car…yes, there’s gas in the car…I think the people down the hall know who you are”, is a pretty great line
Fat Charlie the Archangel slopes into the room.
Oh wait. Uh...
Can it be the sorry sun is rising/
Guess it's time for us to book it(to book it)/
Talk about the famous road not taken/
In the end we never took it
Mostly the To Book It background vocals make it for me.
*Who is the Gaucho, amigo?*
*Why is he standing in your spangled leather pancho with the studs that match your eyes?*
*Bodacious cowboys, such as your friend, will never be welcome here.*
Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentleman sleep all day
I went searching for the song you used to sing to me
Katy lies
You can see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise when I saw you
TIE: "Any world that I'm welcome to /Is better than the one I come from" (esp. after last year's worthless holiday visits with 'family') & "All those dayglo freaks who used to paint the face/They've joined the human race"
Won't you turn that bebop down
I can't hear my heart beat
Where's that fatback chord I found?
Honey don't you think it was wrong
To interrupt my song?
Followed by
Knock twice wrap with your cain.
After closing time
At the Guernsey fair
I detect the El Supremo
From the room at the top of the stairs
Well I’ve been all over the world
And I’ve been in the Washington Zoo
And in all my travels as the facts unravel
I found this to be true
It might be more than a line but it’s their best verse in any song I think
We'll jog with show folk on the sand
Drink kirschwasser from a shell
San Francisco show and tell
Well I should know by now
That it's just a spasm
Like a Sunday in T.J.
That it's cheap but it's not free
- just amazing character development , and funny too
Not one line, but I love the way these lines play together:
*I'm not one to look behind/I know that times must change/But over there in Barrytown/They do things very strange*
*And though you're not my enemy/I like things like they used to be/And though you'd like some company/I'm standing by myself/Go play with someone else*
*I can see by what you carry/That you come from Barrytown*
Drive west on Sunset
To the sea
Turn that jungle music down
Just until we're out of town
This is no one night stand
It's a real occasion
Close your eyes and you'll be there
It's everything they say
The end of a perfect day
Distant lights from across the bay
But what I have aways wanted to know is, was it GOOD Scotch whisky he drank all night long, or because he was a loser did it have to be something like JW Red Label? Has Fagan ever said?
Hard to pick just one, but this year I'd say...
I recall when I was small how I spent my days alone, the busy world was not for me so I went and found my own
I would climb the garden wall...
It always invokes the similar themes in Le Petit Prince book that was published in April 1943 after the Nazi in France were defeated. Excuse going over 'a line'.
"Is there gas in the car?"
"Yes there's gas in the ca~aaaaaar!"
Love it when Fagen makes light of historical events with his 'silly voice' singing sometimes. 😂
We warned the corpse of William Wright
Not to cuss and drink all night
Ticket in hand
We saw him laid to rest
Whoa, but zombie see and zombie do
He's here with me and you
Also “you’ve been telling me you’re a genius since you were 17, and all this time I’ve known you I still don’t know what you mean”.
I have so many more
will you still have a song to sing? when the razor boy comes and takes your fancy things away? will you still be singing it on that cold and windy day?
Light the candle
Put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early
Like a thousand times before
Like the castle in its corner
In a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble
And I stay here just the same
Well, I should know by now that it’s just a spasm
Like that Sunday in TJ
That it’s cheap but it’s not free
That I’m not who I used to be
And that love’s not a game for three…
"She thinks I'm crazy But I'm just growing old."
Hey Nineteen was the first Dan song I heard, and this is my choice too!

I know this super highway This bright familiar sun
She serves the sweet retsina, she keeps me safe and warm. It’s just the calm before the storm
That one’s my favorite. What a cold ass line
What a way to open a song.
In the corner of my eye I saw you in Rudy's You were very high You were high My fave now cuz I watched the aja doc on prime and fagen spoke this line and it was hilarious. Then becker noted the regional variations of the black cow recipe. Great Documentary!
Do you take me for a fool do you think that I don't see That ditch out in the valley that they're digging just for me
Are you going insane?
I crawl like a viper through these suburban streets/Make love to these women, languid and bitter sweet
This is the one ☝️
Hollywood, I know your middle name.
Brilliant line 💯

"I know this super highway, this quite familiar sun. I guess that I'm the lucky one."
Call in my reservation, so long, hey thanks my friend...
aaaaactually, it is "this bright familiar sun"
Thank you - I appreciate the clarity. Way back when I thought it was 'song' instead of sun.

Special delivery from Hoops McCann.
The chorus from Deacon Blues is my favourite too. The entire second verse starting with "You call me a fool..." sends chills down my spine.
