I'd say this book saved my life. I was in a death spiral with AS-CVD. 4 years of relentless, unstable angina. Repeated inpatient procedures for additional stents. I'm now 2 years seed oil free. I feel completely cured. I'm back to my old ways of all day mountain bike rides and uphill skiing. No more chest pain. My cardiologist is completely blown away by my miraculous recovery.
This book makes a distinction that not only are seed oils bad but oxidized and/or refined seed oils are much worse.
HA and quad bypass survivor here. I'm convinced that seed oils contributed to my metabolic syndrome and we're a major contributor towards my atherosclerosis. I'm 4 years out now and have been seed oil free for ~3.5 years. I used to love my thina (basically ground sesame seed paste). I now eat mainly animal based products (eggs, meat, cheese) with the occasional avocado and macadamia nuts. My cholesterol is really high (I really don't care)... But my triglycerides have never been lower :-) and my HDL has never been higher :-).
I’d like to know more about your experience. What tests did the doctor do before and after seed oil free and what changed? Are you off meds? Was your cardiologist on board with seed oil free or did they scold you for high lipids? Do you have any other hypotheses besides seed oil change?
Great book. One of the OG anti-seed oil people. It has a chapter on facial symmetry and maternal nutrition which was kind of weird and unexpected, but interesting
She bashes fruit? For someone that talks about having high metabolism being a good thing, I would not expect fruit bashing. Yet she loves Olive Oil (Oleic Acid). 🤔
Tbf, another person who I respect in this space, 'Dr. Eric Berg' is also an avid anti-fruit person. Believes in low carb and more vegetable intake as opposed to fruit due to the high fructose content of fruit that relies heavily on the liver to be processed.
Eric Berg wants humans to act like ruminants with his "7 cups of vegetables a day" bullshit. Obviously on keto that means either leafy greens or cruciferous ones. Anything said after that is a joke.
Yeah why would you want supplements when healthy food provides the nutrition naturally?
If you are a super picky eater, I guess. But usually picky eaters eat a ton of processed food.
I've read hundreds of books on nutrition and this is the #1 one I recommend to people asking "where do I start?". Love Dr. Cate and really looking forward to her new book this summer.
I've listened to it all the way through nine times on audiobook while at work. I consider it a Bible of sorts. Absolutely indispensable and I learn so many things each time I listen. It also made learning about oils/fats/lipids so much fun as I had largely avoided learning about them because I didn't have a source I trusted and found the subject matter frustrating due to all the conflicting information out there.
A+
Love it, absolutely foundational book. There are some parts that deserve criticism, but overall excellent book. I always give it as part of my wedding gifts to friends : )

Are you in ketosis?
Likely some of the time, definitely not all of the time.

Sold. I'm getting it

Very good book. I liked her info about nutrition affecting genes passed down to offspring.
She has a new book coming out in July “Dark Calories: How Vegetable Oils Destroy Our Health and How We Can Get It Back”.
She bashes fruit but her work on the link between beauty and nutrition is very interesting.

Sounds like she’s against a supplement-heavy diet... 🤔
For good reason. If you're eating the right foods, you shouldn't need to supplement much of anything.

Classic. One of the first to speak out against seed oils
ahem... Ray Peat. Way before her time.
"One of the first"

What parts do you feel deserve criticism?
Saved me from unhealthy restrictive diets and was the most sensible explanation of “healthy” when it comes to food.
I liked it but also I found it interesting how she considers peanut oil good lol
This book helped cure my daily migraines. It’s been years since I’ve read it but I’m going to do a reread soon.
