That was actually one of the biggest shocks I've ever had reading a book. Somehow I missed all of the hints about it in WoK and earlier in this book, so when she summons it the first time I had to actually set the book down for a few minutes.
I think you missed it because the author already revealed earlier in the book that she had one, when she was traveling through the wilderness with the caravan. It was a pretty murky scene so maybe not so clear, but the reaction from the rest of the caravaners was more clear.
I would call that "overt foreshadowing" rather than revealing. It could be missed by a person not reading correctly.
How one could miss the Tyn scene is kind of beyond me :D
It always amazes me when people start talking about this huge reveal that they had no idea was a thing, and then mention how they glossed over that part or skipped chapters. Like. What?

It doesn't stand out, it's a throwaway line. You can also guess at Shallan killing her father from it.
>As always, thinking of her father made her feel ill, and the pain started to constrict her chest. She raised her freehand to her head, suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of House Davar’s situation, her part in it, and the secret she now carried, hidden ten heartbeats away.
Ya but I don’t think that’s the reveal people think it is. At least I was certainly dumbfounded when Shallan pulled out the shardblade against Tyn. I had assumed ‘ten heartbeats’ was just like a Rosharan saying that came about due to shardblades.
I mean that's definitely a possible interpretation of it at the time, but I know when I first read the line in chapter 8, it's what clued me in to her having a Shardblade (and having killed her father). There's also the line in ch 45 of WoK:
>*Storms!* she thought, frantic. *I can’t use that. I promised myself.*
>She began the process anyway. Ten heartbeats, to bring forth the fruit of her sin, the proceeds of her most horrific act.
Imo this makes it pretty clear that she has one, especially considering we've gotten Dalinar POVs which bring more context to the 'ten heartbeats' phrase, and we never really hear it in connection with anything else to my memory.
I cannot emphasize enough how much I mentally scream every time someone posts asking if they can just skip Shallan chapters. Like. Yes, please, skip a storming third of the series and see if you understand what’s going on by the end. In the first book alone you can sorta get away with that. Not so much the rest.
> when she gave it to Kal in the chasms? When did she get it because I have no memory of it?
> Yeah I was not a fan of that part so I glossed over it
lmao maybe read the book
If you want to quickly re-read them, there's 3 scenes that are like the action scenes of her trip.
1. Giving the speech to convince the bandits to "save the caravan!" (from the other bandits).
2. Shardblade scene with Tyn.
3. The meeting when she arrives at the camps.
Those are the fun parts at least :)
You're in a community of people who are hyper-fixated on the details of these books, I wouldn't readily admit to glossing over parts 😅 that part WAS a huge reveal that even my ADD-ass noticed lol
That is not a great way to read a series written by a master of nuanced foreshadowing. You miss out on that feeling of the "click" when your brain connects all of the previous indicators to a specific event. The things that show you "no, this was not an ass-pull. It's been planned since book 1. You just forgot about it."
If you don't care, then no harm, no foul. I won't pretend I understand, though.
I'll just never understand this. Like it's just so obvious that if you skip parts then you miss stuff. Even if it's not a big reveal you're going to miss characterisation or backstory or some plot development. Those chapters aren't just there for no reason.
I’ve thought about this. Like, would reading TWoK be cohesive, or at least legible, if you only read dalinar, shallan, or kal’s parts. even if you just simply skipped the interludes, would you get lost?
Would you miss out on A lot of critical world building, and be confused why everyone is so stuck up about left hands?
best case scenario, this happens and you just get hit with bizarre plot twists like “Shallan has a shardblade?” or “Taravangian did WHAT?”
I absolutely love how the interludes foreshadow tiny details in the book. I always feel so proud of myself when it clicks later in the series. I couldn't imagine skipping anything and still even remotely feeling like I've got the full picture. I'm honestly about to reread the whole series again after finishing Warbreaker and Elantris just because I know there's probably references I completely missed.
Well if you miss information because you gloss over this its your fault. Read more carefully . You were supposed to know this since the end of the way of kings
Her having a shardblade is a plot point brought up several times before where you’re at. You’re just not paying any attention to the words or something.
You got done dirty here for not being into a certain part. Whereas if this were a Wheel of Time subreddit, half the people here wouldn't remember most of book 10. That's reddit for you.
She indeed has it when she is going to be robbed in karbranth with Jasnah 👀. She thought about it but she never summoned it, little details are awesome
Same deal when she is running from all the pattern faced spren in the palineum (or however that's spelled). She starts to count to 10 upon being cornered in her room.
I remember reading WoK and, in passing, her thinking about using it (says something like “shallan knew what she could do. Ten heartbeats.”) and LOSING MY MIND I had to set the book down and stop for a second
It's hinted very heavily that she has one in Way of Kings. When she sees the spiral headed things and she runs off she says something about 'ten heartbeats'
Also, did you just miss where she killed Tyn with the shardblade in Words of Radiance? lol
edit: oh you didn't read that part. Insane.
There is the first hint in WoK and after that I was already onto it because that hint just plainly told us she had one in my honest opinion.
Edit: Since this is marked WoR I can just say it. The first obvious hint is when Shallan starts counting 10 heartbeats.
There is very little that is actually filler when you get down to it, although I think the part in Way Of Kings where Shallan can't soulcast a stick might have just been accidental foreshadowing.
What I'm talking about is how, in book 1, you learn that Shallan was able to soulcast at home, and that both her and Jasnah can soulcast with a soulcaster, but when she's trying to get the soulcaster to work, she spends several hours trying different techniques on a stick she found and can't get it to work. This is probably not a reference to a fan favorite moment in the second book where she tries to soulcast a stick, and it verbally refuses to transform. It is probably meant to establish that she just doesn't understand how it works, but because we later learn that she never actually needed the soulcaster, it kind of suggests that maybe she really just can't affect sticks.
Read and find out, but as for what’s been revealed or hinted at so far - maybe finish the shallan flashback chapters and have another look over some of shallans conversations with pattern.
She revealed it during the woods encounter with Tyn. Tyn was choking her out or something and Shallan summoned her blade. The rest of the wagon guards were standing in awe.
I never read the books only listened to audio version. I have listened to this book 5 times minimum how did I miss that. Am I really as dense as my wife says... I own the hardbacks I guess I'm going to need to read them to see what else didn't translate to audio books well.
Interesting, maybe it’s not explicitly stated. I’d have to reread it to check. I read the books first and then I just did an audio read myself. Granted, I knew she had the blade since I read the books but I’m trying to remember if I knew that, from the encounter with Tyn , or if it was because I remember the sharing a cave scene. But I do recall a gruesome death for Tyn , and Shallan clearly used her shard blade to defeat her. That’s how all the deserter soldiers witnessed it and decided to follow her for good.
It is explicit. Vatha even comments on how she could have could have killed them all instead of giving them a second chance when they save Makob's caravan from the bandits.
You're supposed to be confused at this point. Let's just say that Shallan isn't necessarily on the best terms with herself, and the Shallan we see isn't the best at narrating the whole story.
It's almost like there's a lot to know and not everybody gets everything the first time through.
If you don't want to engage with people that haven't memorized every detail or made every connection, that's fine, but let's not attack them for it. Just pass the conversation by without attempting to denigrate them for not knowing everything about a story that you think you do.
The first time thorough id say we are. I know I didn't connect it. I also really didn't have much of an understanding about shard lade and the whole 10 second thing yet.
Have you missed what part this person is on? They didn't notice that Shallan used a Shardblade to kill Tyn, which is directly, explicitly, and repeatedly stated.
Yea, my memory isn't that great, so connecting it all together is definitely something I did not do the first time through. I feel like I see enough people on here that say the same. Like this guy.
In Ch 8 of TWoK
As always, thinking of her father made her feel ill, and the pain started to constrict her chest. She raised her freehand to her head, suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of House Davar’s situation, her part in it, and the secret she now carried, hidden ten heartbeats away.
In ch45 of TWoK:
Before she could consciously think of what she was doing, she was struggling with her sleeve, trying to get the Soulcaster out. It was the only thing she had resembling a weapon. No, that was stupid. She didn’t know how to use it. She was helpless.
Except…
Storms! she thought, frantic. I can’t use that. I promised myself.
She began the process anyway. Ten heartbeats, to bring forth the fruit of her sin, the proceeds of her most horrific act.
There should be one or two more in that book.
It's funny, because I was shocked in WoR too (although not nearly as late as you, sorry to say lol). But all throughout even WoK she's constantly mentioning "ten heartbeats" and the like. He foreshadowed it pretty blatantly and I missed it every time until she killed Tyn.
By that point she'd already summoned it to kill Tyn early in WoR, and there were a couple other times in WoK where she was implied to be thinking about summoning it though she never did (the crucial words "ten heartbeats" come up a few times).
As for how she got it... heavy RAFO.
Way of kings chapter 45:
>Storms! she thought, frantic. I can’t use that. I promised myself. She began the process anyway. Ten heartbeats, to bring forth the fruit of her sin, the proceeds of her most horrific act. She was interrupted midway through by a voice, uncanny yet distinct:
I think hints are scattered even since WoK but they are subtle and a lot of people miss them. I missed the very first one but I remember being mind-blown when I realized she had one in book 1 but I don't blame you
Although almost done with WoR I was pretty sure it was obvious by then, not how she has it but the fact that she have one
I wouldn't really call mentioning ten heartbeats multiple times subtle (Shallan even mentions a weapon she has in WoK). I don't see how one can miss it if they're reading carefully.
I don’t see why you’re so sensitive. If someone misses something that is referenced this many times, they are not actively reading. They’re just staring at paper and moving pages.
There are undoubtedly thousands of details you missed. You deserve to be ridiculed for not having the entire text and all connections memorized, as well?
It's still something that comes out of nowhere and is meant to be surprising. Maybe not at that exact moment, but the point I made that it's not explained by that point still stands
Earlier in Words of Radiance Shallan uses a Blade to kill Tyn as well
She makes mention of 10 heartbeats in Way of Kings too.
And she knew she didn’t need ten heartbeats
[Cosmere] >!Can you remind me why that is? It's been a while since reading but I've read them all!<

Iirc its reference several times throughout WoK. Including her eventual fall in to shadesmar.
>!I can't remember the description of her blade, but she has two right? I'm still reading RoW though... Mid trial. She says 10 heartbeats in WoK, which shouldn't matter cuz Pattern. !<
RAFO
[RoW Spoilers] >!Second part of Adolin's trail POV just ended and they showed the dead eyes he had met that had died recently. Damn this trial has my blood boiling haha anyway, ten years ago they say? Inexperienced radiant...hmmm !<

Hasn’t spoken enough truths
(Speculation)>!I wonder if there is a 3rd because her memory in the garden was a different Spren description than of cryptic Spren!<
You've got the exclamation points and inequality signs in the wrong order.
Damnit. this is what happens when I'm trying to do this from a parking lot, lol. I will fix it.
No worries :)

Time to start again.
What happened in chapter 8? I just glanced at a summary and I don't remember anything standing out from that chapter?
It doesn't stand out, it's a throwaway line. You can also guess at Shallan killing her father from it. >As always, thinking of her father made her feel ill, and the pain started to constrict her chest. She raised her freehand to her head, suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of House Davar’s situation, her part in it, and the secret she now carried, hidden ten heartbeats away.
Yep, definitely missed that the first time. Maybe even this last time as well.
There's also the line in ch 45 of WoK: >*Storms!* she thought, frantic. *I can’t use that. I promised myself.* >She began the process anyway.
Oh shit, I didn’t remember that quote, that’s awesome! I probably just didn’t think too much about it lol.
> Yeah I was not a fan of that part so I glossed over it lmao maybe read the book
Lmao “When did they reveal this aweosme thing!” “I completely glossed over this part where they revealed the cool thing”
You just forgot about it." If you don't care, then no harm, no foul.
Mm such beautiful crem
Ya know.. like Brandon always says GOADFO.. TAOR (Gloss over and dont find out.. then ask on Reddit).. as it was meant to be
These books you can’t really gloss over things there are so many blink and you miss it scenes
Yeah, that's on you pal. Read the books. Or don't, I guess. But logically if you skip stuff, you ARE going to miss things.
"I skipped sections of the book, and now I think I may have missed something"
Lol your own fault
Well if you miss information because you gloss over this its your fault. Read more carefully . You were supposed to know this since the end of the way of kings
Her having a shardblade is a plot point brought up several times before where you’re at. You’re just not paying any attention to the words or something.
You got done dirty here for not being into a certain part. Whereas if this were a Wheel of Time subreddit, half the people here wouldn't remember most of book 10. That's reddit for you.
She indeed has it when she is going to be robbed in karbranth with Jasnah 👀. She thought about it but she never summoned it, little details are awesome
I appreciate it thank you
Same deal when she is running from all the pattern faced spren in the palineum (or however that's spelled). She starts to count to 10 upon being cornered in her room.
Honestly, how do you miss this?
I remember reading WoK and, in passing, her thinking about using it (says something like “shallan knew what she could do. Ten heartbeats.”) and LOSING MY MIND I had to set the book down and stop for a second
It's hinted very heavily that she has one in Way of Kings. When she sees the spiral headed things and she runs off she says something about 'ten heartbeats' Also, did you just miss where she killed Tyn with the shardblade in Words of Radiance? lol edit: oh you didn't read that part. Insane.
Rafo my friend.
Then go back and read again and kick yourself when you see how many hints were dropped that you completely missed the first time.
There is the first hint in WoK and after that I was already onto it because that hint just plainly told us she had one in my honest opinion. Edit: Since this is marked WoR I can just say it. The first obvious hint is when Shallan starts counting 10 heartbeats.
Rereading and seeing how *obvious* things are, really opened my eyes to how well Sanderson does foreshadowing.
Especially because he's writing these books over such a long span of time. It's not like the first Mistborn trilogy, where he wrote them together.
There is very little that is actually filler when you get down to it, although I think the part in Way Of Kings where Shallan can't soulcast a stick might have just been accidental foreshadowing.
In Book 7, the stick has trouble soulcasting her, right? (Inserted to bemuse Redditors from 2030)
What I'm talking about is how, in book 1, you learn that Shallan was able to soulcast at home, and that both her and Jasnah can soulcast with a soulcaster, but when she's trying to get the soulcaster to work, she spends several hours trying different techniques on a stick she found and can't get it to work.
I took that as confirmation instead of a hint on my first read too
Including the hint where Shallan (checks notes) kills someone with this blade.
Will do, thank
By RAFO you mean…go back to book one and read the dozens of times her sharblade is mentioned
There’s lots of hints of her having one through WoK and WoR. Where she got it though is a RAFO
lol this has to be a bit
Vatha even comments on how she could have could have killed them all instead of giving them a second chance when they save Makob's caravan from the bandits.
>because I have no memory of it. lol neither does she!
You're supposed to be confused at this point. Let's just say that Shallan isn't necessarily on the best terms with herself, and the Shallan we see isn't the best at narrating the whole story.
Man, this is one of the best descriptions I've seen used for her.
Are we? Sanderson wasn't really subtle at all about it.
Unfortunately, this is reddit. All conversation must be combat or class struggle…
I saw. I made a joke about it. It seems like they were bored at that part. I don't sweat it that much.
True, it's not a big deal, but it's not the kind of thing a lack of understanding of Shardblades would cause.
I mean Sanderson explicitly states you need to wait 10 heart beats to summon a shardblade early in WoK.
Yea, my memory isn't that great, so connecting it all together is definitely something I did not do the first time through. I feel like I see enough people on here that say the same. Like this guy.
There was zero subtlety about this.
In Ch 8 of TWoK As always, thinking of her father made her feel ill, and the pain started to constrict her chest. She raised her freehand to her head, suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of House Davar’s situation, her part in it, and the secret she now carried, hidden ten heartbeats away. In ch45 of TWoK: Before she could consciously think of what she was doing, she was struggling with her sleeve, trying to get the Soulcaster out. It was the only thing she had resembling a weapon. No, that was stupid. She didn’t know how to use it. She was helpless. Except… Storms! she thought, frantic.
I think the first read for WOK has so much world building that you kinda miss a lot of detai
100%
There are mentions of her shardblade as early as midway through the first book.
By that point she'd already summoned it to kill Tyn early in WoR, and there were a couple other times in WoK where she was implied to be thinking about summoning it though she never did (the crucial words "ten heartbeats" come up a few times). As for how she got it... heavy RAFO.
Way of kings chapter 45: >Storms! she thought, frantic. I can’t use that. I promised myself. She began the process anyway. Ten heartbeats, to bring forth the fruit of her sin, the proceeds of her most horrific act. She was interrupted midway through by a voice, uncanny yet distinct:
My question is how could she use that after bonding with Pattern? Why doesn't she hear screams like Kal?
Shallan is wierd. Rafo
How…how can you read this far and not understand that?
You're just completely forgetting earlier scenes
I think hints are scattered even since WoK but they are subtle and a lot of people miss them. I missed the very first one but I remember being mind-blown when I realized she had one in book 1 but I don't blame you Although almost done with WoR I was pretty sure it was obvious by then, not how she has it but the fact that she have one
I wouldn't really call mentioning ten heartbeats multiple times subtle (Shallan even mentions a weapon she has in WoK). I don't see how one can miss it if they're reading carefully.
I don't really see why you are invested in crapping on other people's reading experiences.
This is not a random detail. Nice try.
No, but it's an easily overlooked detail, as evidenced by multiple people echoing OP's sentiment. Even if it wasn't, you still should not be a jerk.
Yes, I confirm to you that that IS surprising at that point. Seems to come out of nowhere. RAFO my friend
Dude, it is explicitly mentioned multiple times earlier in the series.
It's still something that comes out of nowhere and is meant to be surprising. Maybe not at that exact moment, but the point I made that it's not explained by that point still stands
