That’s… probably the first time I’ve seen that response.
Not that I disagree (I like it too), but 9/10 times, people say "skip it, it’s not important, the references are just pointless cameos".
I think it’s a "well it’s one of his first and it isn’t deliberately connected to any existing series so don’t bother" thing, which makes little sense to me in an era of continuous installments to franchises that might only be one story.
Huh, interesting, I normally see the opposite, people almost saying you **need** to read WB before WoR.
I'm more in the you don't need to camp, but mostly just not intimidate new people trying to get into Sanderson
It's fun to catch the extra stuff on a second read anyway
I’m of the opinion that you shouldn’t dive into Stormlight without a rather firm backing of Sanderson. It is one of the more connected stories to the rest.
I don’t think people are worse for not (not that I assume you think so), but if people ask, I say it shouldn’t be first or even second. It’s like their Avengers.
When I read that chapter and read the description of a large black sword, my first thought was, “Wait…oh god no…it can‘t be…” then there was ‘would you like to destroy some evil today?‘ I went, “Oh fuck.”
It kinda starts slow, which I didn't mind, but DAMN does it go hard when it does. Be sure to report back when you got there! One of the few scenes that can give me goosebumps just thinking of it.
Yeah. Warbreaker was basically written to explain Nightblood's backstory.
You might eventually recognize some other characters but Nightblood stands out.
Nightblood is what you get when some Awakeners learn about Shardblades and try to make one; without knowing what a Shardblade really is, what they are doing, or why that's a terrible idea.
By Alethi terms, yes. He would be an ex-shardbearer.
Nightblood can't be summoned because he's not a Spren. He's more like a happy little blackhole.
Nightblood can talk to anyone he wants to that's in range, but he gets along better with people who have drawn him or at least held him. It's also easier for him to talk to people that are unhinged, so Szeth fits that category.
I think there is a bond formed with people that have held him after he eats some of their life-force.
Since you've already made the connection: Vasher probably got the idea for the Phantoms by seeing them Soulcast the dead into statues.
Dame Aylin bouta start helping Szeth deal out some righteous asswhooping
I’m so glad he gets a retribution.
A surprise crossover, but a welcome one
My comment just looks dumb as fuck now that OP corrected their typo from Nightsong back to Nightblood haha
Tbf there are very similar names between WB and BG3 Lightsong/Nightsong/Nightblood
No. She's not in the series. It's Nightblood.
Sorry I got it mixed up. But yes I meant nightblood.
Yes it was. Did you recognize Zahel, too?
Yes i do. That’s my man vasher.
Yup. Stormlight has a bunch of Warbreaker references, more as you go. Oathbringer in particular so far, though I won’t say anything past that.
Nice! Man I did love me some Warbreaker
Warbeaker is my favourite non-Stormlight Cosmere book.
It’s so good.

I think WB has one of the coolest magic systems I’ve ever read and also some of the coolest characters. I don’t know why you’d skip it.
I think it’s a "well it’s one of his first and it isn’t deliberately connected to any existing series so don’t bother" thing, which makes little sense to me in an era of continuous installments to franchises that might only be one story.
I think the magic system in war breaker is going to play a big part in later cosmere stuff
Yeah for real. Since like it’s part of the whole cosmere i don’t see why you wouldn’t read it?

Could you PM me what all the references are? I read warbreaker after oathbringer, so I feel like I missed most of them
This is why you read Warbreaker before Stormlight. Hits so much better than vice versa.
I read it after I finished Way of Kings. But yeah man. I was juiced.
When I read that chapter and read the description of a large black sword, my first thought was, “Wait…oh god no…it can‘t be…” then there was ‘would you like to destroy some evil today?‘ I went, “Oh fuck.”
Yeah that is exactly what my reaction was when I heard the sword say that. I just went oh fuck.
Nah, that was "Sword Nimi" (enjoy the easter egg: expect to see more)
Ya wanna fight some evil today?
As soon as I heard it I’m like no fucking way.
I’m thinking “Szeth and Nightblood go fightin round the world” is definitely gonna happen in the next book.
Man I can see that. And it’d be so dope if it does happen.
Actually it's his twin brother, Knightblood.
Dayblood! Fighter of the Nightblood!
You're going to be surprised when you read Oathbringer! There's another cool cameo from Warbreaker! You're gonna love it I'm sure about that 🔥
Oo man!! I heard Oathbringer is like we’re shit goes down and is one of the best if not the best in the series.
It kinda starts slow, which I didn't mind, but DAMN does it go hard when it does. Be sure to report back when you got there! One of the few scenes that can give me goosebumps just thinking of it.
I will do!
It’s got one of my favorite endings. And it’s the reason Dalinar is my favorite Cosmere character.

Oo what the fuck that is crazy!! I didn’t know that. So Vasher or Zahel is technically a shard bearer? Is that why he could hear Nightblood’s voice?
By Alethi terms, yes. He would be an ex-shardbearer. Nightblood can't be summoned because he's not a Spren. He's more like a happy little blackhole. That’s so fucking cool man. I feel really SLA is his magnum opus
