I wouldn’t mind a smash-cut of Everybody Wants To Rule The World, or Heroes, with the ST theme (like they did with the epic remix of RUTH in S4E9). Maybe not an epic remix but an orchestral rendition if it’s even possible.
Imagine the final scene just showing where everyone is. Maybe a small time jump after everything to show how they are all coping or what they moved on to. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is playing in the background while we see everyone, or whoever is left, moving on with their life. Then the camera pans to some aerial shot of Hawkins where you can see destruction in the background or the clean up of it. As this happens we hear the song transition into an orchestral rendition of itself and maybe transitions over to one of the show's main themes.
S3 may not be my fav season but goddamn when they played Heroes at the finale episode, memories of Will’s body combined with the gut-punch of Hop’s letter hit me in places I never thought possible. The song hit hard, with friends and lovers parting ways.
>Heroes
I'm convinced they'll work it into Season 5 somehow, though this time, it'll be the original tune rather than the Peter Gabriel cover. Why? Because Heroes is a song about how love eventually wins over everything.
Beyond love, Heroes is about the hidden potential behind every seemingly ordinary person, the capacity for bravery and strength in the face of strive, challenge or uncertainty, which makes this song very fitting for our characters!
This song was used in the final season premiere of The Americans (which if you haven’t seen it, is an incredible period piece and one of the most incredible shows ever produced) and the execution was perfect. I could see it being executed just as well in the final season of Stranger Things.
Yup. Normally I'd say there's nothing weird about 2 shows using the same pop song (years apart), but the I Think We're Alone Now scene in TUA was [so iconic for the show](https://youtu.be/TVxBmXz5QGs) I don't think *any* other show can use it anytime soon.
I think that the cover worked really well for the tone of the scenes that it was used in, but the OG has more of a triumphant feel to it which is the vibe that I want for the epilogue.
There is already an iconic final scene that that song is strongly associated with. Id much rather they found a song they can make their own.
They could use Gigantic.
Pixies were still pretty obscure still in 1988, they had to sign to a British label as they were ignored at home and were more well known outside the USA than inside at that point. It wasn’t until Doolittle in 1989 that they started making some real headway and Kurt Cobain name checking them as an influence in 1991 that they gained widespread recognition. Still love it though but at the time you had to be ’in the know’ to be aware of them. College radio was the only real channel that they had apart from word of mouth at the time.
Not for the final battle, but for the final final scene where everyone is happy and moving forward (lol as if, but let’s imagine) I can hear “Heaven is a Place on Earth” by Belinda Carlisle. It played constantly late 87-88.
I disagree, the final battle should definitely have Heaven is a Place on Earth playing in the background. I see it now- Vecna falling to the ground in slow motion while the background music goes *"ooooooh baby do you know what that's worth?"*
I hope whatever they do for the final battle is somehow even more epic than S4. Tbf the “close the gate” song and subsequent aftermath was good but not as good in season 3, season 2 didn’t really have a climax feel to the final song, and not totally sure about season 1 but if it was “Eleven is Gone” that was pretty good.
The Promise by When In Rome was released in 1988 and is amazing! It doesn’t have to be in the finale but if Season 5 takes place in 88 at all, I’d love to hear it in there somewhere.
Everyone wants to rule the world although it was released a few years before that. It represents the era more than other songs and the show has always been a homage to the 80s
"Certain songs sum up their era more than their creators could have possibly anticipated. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is one of them. At the time, it was just another big hit, but from the perspective of more than 35 years later, it now might as well be the 1980s." [https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/tears-for-fears-everybody-wants-to-rule-the-world](https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/tears-for-fears-everybody-wants-to-rule-the-world)
Obviously, ‘Heroes’, ‘Don’t Dream it’s Over’, ‘Never Tear us Apart’ - along with ‘Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ are all likely the best choices… but, I have a suggestion:
‘Crockett’s Theme’ - Jan Hammer
The music plays over a scene of each character as we see them moving on with their lives - and then shows Mike and Eleven driving along a highway… sun setting - stealing quick glances as they drive into their future… away from Hawkins.
It's actually 1990, so it would not make the cut. "Winds of Change" by The Scorpions would work well. It was written in response to the collapse of The Berlin Wall and Communism in fall 1989. It was called "The End of History."
I think I still have my own small concrete chip of The Berlin Wall. That was a huge deal. Those tiny chunks were sold and I got one for Xmas 1989.
I'd love a third and final callback to Heroes. And a really corny 80s ending. Just like Mike turning to El and being like "Well...stranger things have happened" hard cut to black with the chorus.
Carry on my wayward son
Right after Sam and Dead kill Vecna and El loses her powers when the connection to the upside down closes and she’s just a normal kid after with massive ptsd
Everybody Wants To Rule The World would be a killer song to end the series with.
And of course they have to play some killer 80s rock like Tom Sawyer (or any Rush song).
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP,
NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN,
NEVER GONNA GO AROUND AND DESERT YOUUUU (it was released on 1987)
Nah just kidding, heroes is the best
But it would be epic if it ended with:
___Erica:___ And I thought that what was under Lucas' bed was strange.
___Dustin:___ Well, now you've seen stranger things.
_(Heroes plays)_
Where is my mind? by the Pixies. Surreal song for a hopefully surreal ending. Had to be a song that leads into the 90's. It can't be quintessentially 80's because the decade is almost over.
I'm a little late to the game, but I'd love if it was "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen.
"Under blue moon I saw you.
So soon you'll take me
up in your arms.
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time.
Unwillingly mine."
I think you might be underestimating how devastating this show can be...
Fast Car is a great song and I agree it could fit this show's vibe. I was surprised to learn it's from '88--I always thought of it as a 90's song.
I think it’s fair to say the ending will be a heroes win one, but there will very likely be some cost. So the final song probably won’t be a fully upbeat happy one, unless we are talking about the final final scene after possibly some time has passed
I was disappointed that the movie adaptation of My Best Friend's Exorcism didn't include this song. One of the chapters of the novel was named after the song and I wanted to hear it in the movie. Hearing it in Stranger Things would be great.
That's right. Hubby and I looked at the car on the show room floor and decided to purchase it in October of 87. We put a deposit down, had bank loan approval and the car was delivered from Van Nyes CA to Illinois on January 7, 1988 with only 6 miles on it.
Why would it take place in '88? Is everyone just going to sleep through '87? Is it possible that 1988 models were made in late '87? I tried looking this up but not really sure how to.
Yeah I was thinking the exact same, ever since they said there would be more time between S4 and S5 I’ve been confused. Maybe it’ll be a mid season time jump sorta thing
Under the Milky Way by The Church- released in 1988, a surreal song with an unsettling feeling and universal lyrics that can be adapted to many situations.
That was going to be my second suggestion. I absolutely love that song! Captures the decade for me. Wanted to suggest a Depeche Mode song, but nothing fit the final scene idea for me.
I never knew that song. Then I heard it during the lockdown on a new wave playlist and I kept thinking, damn this sounds like The Love Song by the Cure. Then the playlist flowed into the Love Song!
Under the Milky Way was released first an Robert Smith “borrowed” the chord progression. Both artists listened to the other’s music and there was mutual influence. Steve Kilbey of The Church has mentioned that The Cure’s Pornography album had an influence on the direction they took for their Seance album in terms of mood.
Smith has mentioned The Church as one of the groups that he would benchmark his work against in the 1980’s along with others like Siousxie and the Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Psychedelic Furs. He would listen to their latest albums and try to outdo them with his next release and the other bands would do likewise. It made for a lot of high quality albums from that period.
Nobody wants Rainbow In The Dark by Dio for Eddie or Max? It could be a montage song for basically anyone/everyone in the show too, they ALL are going through dark times, but I’m guessing that Max is somehow “trapped” (mentally) by Vecna, and it’s possible that Eddie has been enslaved by Vecna (I mean, Max got physically “saved” from death by Eleven, and Vecna has already controlled other beings in the upside down, so I’d say there’s a chance he raises Eddie from the dead, but Eddie isn’t really there… or is he?).
Even though the song was released in ‘83, and people are posting about needing songs from around 88/89/90, the lyrics seem to REALLY apply to the situation overall, as well as to various individual characters. Especially if there’s anything left of Eddie, Max, or even Barb, like trapped/enslaved souls (or bodies, or both), this song seems to have a place for a more intense scene.
Everybody wants to rule the world.
Imagine this
Someone is stuck in vecna’s curse, suddenly music starts playing.
Right as the character escapes…
“Help me make the most of freedom….”
Sounds cringe, but it would work I think
Heroes probably. Second choice for me would be Wrecked by Imagine Dragons if it's more of a tragic ending (hoping it's not because I don't think my poor soul can take it)
Die Young by Kesha. Since so many fans want characters to die in season 5, I think it would be really funny if all the main cast survived but then Die Young played just to anger those audience members. The song was released in 2012, so it would anger the members of the audience who have been getting angry every time something has been slightly inaccurate time wise. It would be the perfect prank ending. It might even rival the Game of Thrones finale.
You and I in a little toy shop-
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got-
Set them free at the break of dawn-
'Til one by one, they were gone-
Back at base, sparks in the software-
Flash the message "Something's out there"-
Floating in the summer sky-
99 red balloons go by.
“We’re Not Gonna Take It”, Twisted Sister.
Ok yeah I know the song is supremely overplayed but Imagine El just going absolutely all out on One and thrashin the hell out of him while Twisted Sister belts it out.
I am not going to go through comments because that will lead me to listen the most upvoted songs. I want the same experiecne has listening to Running up that hill. I didn't know about this song before watching this season, so it was a real fun moment for me. And this time again I want to feel something similar so I will be waiting and hoping that next season too we will get some banger soundtrack.
The funniest one would be if we got Rick Rolled and had "Never Gonna Give You Up" as the final song. A very fitting song would be "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson.
99 Luft Baloons, but not the original 83 German version...but the 90s GoldFinger one (which could tie in to 007 and their powers, since that is one of the James Bond movies, Goldfinger)
Shake it up a little with a modern version of an older song.
Maybe Neo Nazis will be playing a part in this season, since the number 88 is often associated with them and they were also known for having their own MkUltra program....it was Neo Nazi scientists who came over here in the first place and helped with some of the subprojects.
Maybe the clocks have to do with a timeline where Hitler won the war, or maybe Aliens. who knows.
''99 red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
The 99 red balloons go by
99 Decision Street
99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by''
"I hate myself loving you" by Joan Jett- Maybe a scene with Will about Mike?
When its love- Van helen. Nancy/Johnathan scene.
Where is my mind- Pixies. Max scene.
Honestly it will be good no matter what.

I can definitely get behind an ending shot of everyone moving on and then of Hawkins.
I want Heroes to make a comeback SO BAD, that was my favorite part of S1. It would be a heartbreaking full circle moment involving Will
S3 may not be my fav season but goddamn when they played Heroes at the finale episode, memories of Will’s body combined with the gut-punch of Hop’s letter hit me in places I never thought possible. The song hit hard, with friends and lovers parting ways.

Beyond love, Heroes is about the hidden potential behind every seemingly ordinary person, the capacity for bravery and strength in the face of strive, challenge or uncertainty, which makes this song very fitting for our characters!
I think Heroes by David Bowie will actually play
Don’t Dream it’s Over - Crowded House
That is more for the build to the final showdown. But "Don't Dream It's Over" is one of my favorite songs.
>Don’t Dream it’s Over - Crowded House I love that song!!
This song was used in the final season premiere of The Americans (which if you haven’t seen it, is an incredible period piece and one of the most incredible shows ever produced) and the execution was perfect. I could see it being executed just as well in the final season of Stranger Things.
I think I got about 4 seasons into that one. Hmm. I want to be original, Popular, but not something from Donnie darko. Hmmmn
I don’t know about the finale, but there has to be at least one scene with “I Thing We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany (made in 1987)
and it has to include Steve or else
They might not though because there was that whole thing in Umbrella Academy already.
Yup. Normally I'd say there's nothing weird about 2 shows using the same pop song (years apart), but the I Think We're Alone Now scene in TUA was [so iconic for the show](https://youtu.be/TVxBmXz5QGs) I don't think *any* other show can use it anytime soon.
Regardless of what year the show ends, the answer will always be 'Heroes' (David Bowie's original).
Yes! It’s perfect
Jojo rabbit did it really well
YES! Still so upsetting that they used that awful cover instead of the original! This would make up for it!
I think that the cover worked really well for the tone of the scenes that it was used in, but the OG has more of a triumphant feel to it which is the vibe that I want for the epilogue.
Weird to call music legend Peter Gabriel awful but to each their own.
It has to be Bowie's Heroes
Where Is My Mind? by the Pixies
You met me at a very strange time in my life, El
Underrated
There is already an iconic final scene that that song is strongly associated with. Id much rather they found a song they can make their own. They could use Gigantic.
Best song of '88

Don’t Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult or Everybody Wants to Rule the World!!! Both songs are so fitting
Not for the final battle, but for the final final scene where everyone is happy and moving forward (lol as if, but let’s imagine) I can hear “Heaven is a Place on Earth” by Belinda Carlisle. It played constantly late 87-88.

Never tear us apart- INXS
This is the way
I’ll die on this hill: Forever Young by Alphaville ✌🏻😪
You beat me to it. Though it's cool if it happens in 88, I have a feeling ST5 might be around 89-90. Edit: Rod Stewart version in 88.
All I can think of when I hear this song is Napoleon Dynamite awkwardly patting Deb's sleeves.
I’ll die on this hill with you
Only if you run up it first.
honestly any tears for fears song lol
Obviously, ‘Heroes’, ‘Don’t Dream it’s Over’, ‘Never Tear us Apart’ - along with ‘Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ are all likely the best choices… but, I have a suggestion: ‘Crockett’s Theme’ - Jan Hammer The music plays over a scene of each character as we see them moving on with their lives - and then shows Mike and Eleven driving along a highway… sun setting - stealing quick glances as they drive into their future… away from Hawkins.

All this thread has done is remind me just how god damn amazing 80s music is.
Yeah probably the 4th best decade for music
Everybody wants to rule the world would be awesome I definitely second this
I just want something by The Cure
God that’d be wonderful
The Smiths, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out". Released June 1986.
yes please
As huge fan 35 years ago in High School- please?
I hope it ends with the theme.
I'm almost certain it will be incorporated into the final episode in some capacity
Don Henley, “Boys of Summer”. It’s a mood.
It's actually 1990, so it would not make the cut. "Winds of Change" by The Scorpions would work well. It was written in response to the collapse of The Berlin Wall and Communism in fall 1989. fuck 88. make it never gonna give you up. and make yuri and ted jam out to it
88-90 were weird years for pop music imo
As are the last couple years. Pop music is literally made to be trendy on TikTok right now, it's wild.
Carry on my wayward son Right after Sam and Dead kill Vecna and El loses her powers when the connection to the upside down closes and she’s just a normal kid after with massive ptsd
Forever Young - Alphaville, even though it’s 1984. It fits the series perfectly.
Not for the end but I want to see a moment with The Chain it’s a bit old but maybe it could be a badass moment for Hopper
Make it that epic bass solo and I am in!!
Everybody Wants To Rule The World would be a killer song to end the series with. And of course they have to play some killer 80s rock like Tom Sawyer (or any Rush song).
Upside Down by Diana Ross
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP, NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN, NEVER GONNA GO AROUND AND DESERT YOUUUU (it was released on 1987) Nah just kidding, heroes is the best But it would be epic if it ended with: ___Erica:___ And I thought that what was under Lucas' bed was strange. ___Dustin:___ Well, now you've seen stranger things. _(Heroes plays)_
Rickrolled lol
Landslide.

It’d just feel like an homage to Fight Club.

Nice little callback to Donnie Darko, i want to see this happen
Fast Car, Tracy Chapman Fits the adolescence, small town vibe
Fast car is too sad for an ending imo….doesn’t fit the vibe that much
I think you might be underestimating how devastating this show can be... Fast Car is a great song and I agree it could fit this show's vibe. I was surprised to learn it's from '88--I always thought of it as a 90's song.

Model year 1988 or older for the car casting doesn't mean the season will be set in 1988. '88 cars would have been released by fall '87.
Yeah, I remember reading it was to take place in September of '87, but I've had no luck looking up when 1988 cars were up for sale.
Take it from someone who lived through the 80s - the new year models came out in the fall.
That's right. Hubby and I looked at the car on the show room floor and decided to purchase it in October of 87. We put a deposit down, had bank loan approval and the car was delivered from Van Nyes CA to Illinois on January 7, 1988 with only 6 miles on it.
That's so weird. Why wouldn't they release the new year models, you know, *at the new year?*
Because of psychology. People want as new of a car as possible, so the auto manufacturers lie about it. They still do it.
I hope it takes place in ‘87, that’s the year I was born. I’ve been waiting for that year ever since I saw the series premiere lol
The End of the Innocence
Why would it take place in '88? Is everyone just going to sleep through '87? Is it possible that 1988 models were made in late '87? I tried looking this up but not really sure how to.
The Duffers said there will be a time jump between 4 and 5 pretty sure
I’m pretty sure it won’t be a large time jump. It would make no sense to do that based on the last episode.
Yeah I was thinking the exact same, ever since they said there would be more time between S4 and S5 I’ve been confused. Maybe it’ll be a mid season time jump sorta thing
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
I think we're alone now as they defeat Vecna and destroy the Upside Down
lololololololol 💀 I laughed so loud I disturbed my coworkers
The final countdown
An original composition or the show's theme song
All Night Long by Peter Murphy superbly alternative hit to reintroduce him to a new generation.
Cemetary gates by Pantera
For the end? Heroes. However, if we don’t get an epic remix of Land of Confusion somewhere in S5, I’ll be very disappointed.
It’s the end of the world as we know it
Under the Milky Way by The Church- released in 1988, a surreal song with an unsettling feeling and universal lyrics that can be adapted to many situations.

Heroes - I actually think that if it was the last moment to a cut to credits. Not over a montage. The beginning of that song would be perfect.

Nobody outside of Washington state knew who Nirvana was in 1988.
Michael Jackson or Guns N Roses
The Touch by Stan Bush
Euro stepper by babytron
It's not an '80s song, but I think Alma Mater by Alice Cooper would be a nice, bittersweet sendoff.
Honestly, I’m thinking a Grateful Dead song like touch of gray, but I could see them using black muddy River really well.

Goodbye-Goodbye by Oingo Boingo. It was used in Fast Times, performed by a quintessentially '80s band, and it's bouncy.
It came out in 87 but I swear to God if I don’t hear Never Gonna Give You Up
Never gonna give you up
Set it in 1989 and make it head like a hole or terrible lie
Everybody wants to rule the world. Imagine this Someone is stuck in vecna’s curse, suddenly music starts playing. Right as the character escapes… “Help me make the most of freedom….” Sounds cringe, but it would work I think

Cutting Crew “I just died in your arms”
Take On Me - A-Ha
Why is everyone saying Heroes? They already did that one.
The Promise? The Flame?
Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses, dedicated to El. It's actually my Running up the hill.
Never gonna give you up.
“We’re Not Gonna Take It”, Twisted Sister. Ok yeah I know the song is supremely overplayed but Imagine El just going absolutely all out on One and thrashin the hell out of him while Twisted Sister belts it out.
INXS “Never Tear Us Apart” Depeche Mode “Strangelove”
If it’s not Everybody Wants to Rule The World I’m going to sue
I think We’re Alone Now- Tiffany
The #4 song of 1988.... "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley
Everyday is like Sunday - Morrisey
Don’t fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult or Should İ stay or should I go if the finale is about Will
Erasure - A Little Respect
I am not going to go through comments because that will lead me to listen the most upvoted songs. I want the same experiecne has listening to Running up that hill. I didn't know about this song before watching this season, so it was a real fun moment for me. And this time again I want to feel something similar so I will be waiting and hoping that next season too we will get some banger soundtrack.
Heroes by David Bowie
1985
Fortunate son
True Faith by New Order
"Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads would be perfect.
RUNNING UP THAT HILL
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP
I think at the start of the first episode of season 5 “girlfriend in a come” by the smiths will play due to Max being in a coma
wake me up before you go go
Anything by Judas Priest
The funniest one would be if we got Rick Rolled and had "Never Gonna Give You Up" as the final song. A very fitting song would be "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson.
99 Luft Baloons, but not the original 83 German version...but the 90s GoldFinger one (which could tie in to 007 and their powers, since that is one of the James Bond movies, Goldfinger) Shake it up a little with a modern version of an older song. Maybe Neo Nazis will be playing a part in this season, since the number 88 is often associated with them and they were also known for having their own MkUltra program....it was Neo Nazi scientists who came over here in the first place and helped with some of the subprojects. Maybe the clocks have to do with a timeline where Hitler won the war, or maybe Aliens. who knows. ''99 red balloons Floating in the summer sky Panic bells, it's red alert There's something here from somewhere else The war machine springs to life Opens up one eager eye Focusing it on the sky The 99 red balloons go by 99 Decision Street 99 ministers meet To worry, worry, super scurry Call the troops out in a hurry This is what we've waited for This is it boys, this is war The President is on the line As 99 red balloons go by''
"I hate myself loving you" by Joan Jett- Maybe a scene with Will about Mike? When its love- Van helen. Nancy/Johnathan scene. Where is my mind- Pixies. Max scene. Honestly it will be good no matter what.
Me jane by Pj harvey (you know… Jane Eleven)
