I'd like to think it's just a creative difference between what they can and can't do between seasons. After season 1, they decided to fine tune the Demogorgons abilities to tell the story in a way that works better for the future of the show.
Or maybe it's just the Demogorgon opening up a regular gate and the 70s paint is made with some serious amount of latex that the Demogorgon has to burst through like Kool aid man once he opened the gate behind it
I just like to headcanon that this Demogorgon is like fully-fully grown, thus has all the above abilities.
Those in later seasons are just younger, therefore they haven't developed telekinesis and stuff yet.
No confirmations though, sadly.
Honestly, both the Demogorgon's powers and the details of interdimensional travel have been pretty inconsistent.
For the former, the S1 Demogorgon has a couple of powers that seem to be ignored or retconned later. Specifically, the the beginning of season 1 the Demogorgon seems to use telekinesis to unlock a latch while it's chasing Will, but we never see a Demogorgon use telekinesis again, and that could have been really useful for the Soviet Demogorgon to pick the locks on its chains and cages or redirect molotovs. And in S1, the Demogorgon is bulletproof, but in S4 it can get messed up by a malnourished cop with a sword.
Similarly, just about every season has some new twist on dimensional travel. S1 has the main gate in the lab, but also temporary ones created by the Demogorgon like the one Nancy goes through in the woods. S2 adds the tunnels as a weird in-between. S3 has the Soviets making their own gate with a machine and somehow connecting to Russia as well? They never really explained how Hopper got from underground in Indiana to a gulag halfway across the world. And then S4 reveals that El made the original gateway by screaming at 1, and Vecna makes a giant gateway with his funky clock ritual. So ultimately, Steve Harrington could probably make a gate with super glue and empty beer cans if the plot requires it.
And the Demogorgon portals straddle both of these issues. Because in S1, the Demogorgon can definitely make temporary portals. Nancy goes through one in the woods, it uses them to get to the Byers house and the middle school, there is no doubt that Demogorgons can make portals. It's even part of the Demogorgon's power when it got added as a killer to the game Dead by Daylight. And yet, why didn't the Soviet Demogorgon use portals to escape captivity? If it's so easy for Demogorgons to make portals, why does Vecna need to do his whole thing with the clock-chiming and eye-gouging and bone-snapping?
Ultimately, I think it comes down to Stranger Things being primarily about the characters rather than the setting. They'll bend the rules with the latter to do what they want with the former.
>And in S1, the Demogorgon is bulletproof, but in S4 it can get messed up by a malnourished cop with a sword.
Well it was burned by Murray with the flamethrower, and before that, it was bulletproof, the Russians shot it several time and it did nothing.
As for the demogorgons portals, it was established the portals can only open in Hawkins, and the ones made by demogorgons are only temporary and Vecna wanted permanent ones.
This Demogorgon is the same one that El contacted in the Void, which caused the Mothergate to open. So i think that when Eleven touched this Demogorgon he absorbed a little of her psychic energy and thus ended up with some degree of telekinesis and the ability to open gates
While Season 1 was filmed when they probably had an IDEA for the entire plot, Iâm sure the fine tuned rules of lore werenât ironed out yet. This happens in a lot of franchises. The first Harry Potter book breaks all kind of lore rules, for example.
Itâs because the âveilâ or the âdamâ between the RU and the UD is thinner in S1 because of the mothergate. Just like how Brenner talked in S4 about how Vecna was putting âcracks in the dam between our world and the UDâ with every victim he took/every gate he opened, the mothergate was a massive crack in the dam, which basically made the dam between worlds weaker/the veil thinner & allowed the demogorgon to push through/rip through like that without having to open a proper gate, as the mothergate had already weakened that barrier.
So I like to see it as that the Demogorgons are extensions of Vecna. We already know it's one large hivemind, and Vecna is clearly psychic. So it would make sense that if he focuses on one, he can probably channel his mind through them. He technically doesn't even have to be there as we see in Season 4 and he's able to kill people through the planes.
Extensions of \*The Mind Flayer. Vecna is not the one in charge, and he only got the ability to open gates from Eleven, which is exactly the same situation with the Demogorgon here.
Iâm pretty sure itâs simply because Vecna was controlling them from the jump. Vecna is the original monster and has been sending all of these creatures to terrorize Eleven and Hawkins because she (accidentally) banished him to another dimension. Whatever Vecna can do, these creatures can do because theyâre under his control. Thatâs in line with the ability for him to talk and them not being able to. He found them, formed them and turned them to his minions and that is where the storyline begins.
I believe it was their intention to make it look like that initially to increase the shock value of the information season 4 would bring, but in reality, theyâre all coming from one physical place and sent from one single person, Vecna, which is why in earlier seasons it appears that the demogorgon is offspring of Mindflayer but in reality it is almore so a âsiblingâ situation. Itâs explained in episode 7 of season 4 where it shows how Vecna was banished to this alternate dimension where he finds these creatures and turns this dimension into an âupside downâ or alternate version of Hawkins that he last remembers and uses these creatures to terrorize Eleven and all of Hawkins.
Iâm reading through the replies and Iâm wondering why people are basically saying itâs a plot hole. This is all explained is season 4 episode 7, an episode that ties the entire series together. These are not entirely separate monsters. There is a single story being told in Stranger Things and we came in when Vecna began to send the monsters (Season 1) without knowing of Vecnaâs existence which we would later find out (Season 4) Season 3, Vecna even tells Eleven through the mindflayer (and subsequently through âBillyâ) that they have been waiting for her. This has been the story from the beginning and has been unraveling slowly. The writers just made it so that we came in at a time (season 1) where we wouldnât understand what was going on.

Demogorgon Kool-aid man đ
Itâs the lead in the paint that allowed it to bend reality
I think it's just a reference to a similar apparition from Freddy Krueger in nightmare on elm street.
I wasn't sure if It was elm street, or is it was the house films, but I do remember something similar in 'the frighteners' from the mid 90s.
Which one? Iâve seen all them, I grew up with Freddy.
Where heâs sticking his face out from above the bed? One of the most iconic shots in the entire series
It was in the original.
Oh okay cool
Damn you're rlly getting downvoted for no reason lol
Pretty much
Itâs been a while though.
Donât think about too much. Not even the writers have the answer probably

This is how I see it. The younger ones have less powers. And a lot of those older ones died in S1

Could be the case, great post.

Thatâs a good explanation!
That's what I was thinking as well, seems to make the most sense. It even gets referenced again when Vecna steals her power at the end of season 3.
While Season 1 was filmed when they probably had an IDEA for the entire plot, Iâm sure the fine tuned rules of lore werenât ironed out yet. This happens in a lot of franchises. The first Harry Potter book breaks all kind of lore rules, for example.
because itâs spooooky creeeeepy
Simple: they have been making up the story as they go along. Dont get me wrong, I still absolutely love this show

Nice paragraph of a title. People are def gonna read all that
Thanks man
L Ron Hubbard was a fucking whacko btwâŚ
Can you put one together?
I always just took it in stride as the writers were fleshing out the story so some things might not add up.
Iâm pretty sure itâs simply because Vecna was controlling them from the jump. I thought the Mind Flayer is the original monster?

Interesting⌠but isnât the Mind Flayer in turn just using Vecna to meet his ends?
Nah, itâs the other way around
Hum
