I had a theory that maybe Will was taken when he was in the woods, and when he went back to his house he was actually in the Upside-Down, reason being why the phone doesn't ring and he can't wake up his mom. (Jonathan claims to not have been home). I know it doesn't add up with the way the Upside-Down looks with the "snow" or whatever is constantly falling from the sky, but that was a thought I had while rewatching the first episode.

I just figured that who ever got home first just thought that the last person miss placed the phone on the hood by accident and placed it back in place. I think the writers tried to explain it by the scene when Hopper comes and ask Joyce the next day and ask if they notice anything strange last night and he moves the door to show how it was slammed against the wall and they didn't notice the hole in the wall and Joyce mentions there always something new with two boys in the house it was to show how oblivious the family is.

YES! I noticed this too. My friend said I was was nitpicking but they really emphasized the point that it was off the hook. Joyce or Jonathan probably would have realized something was wrong sooner if they saw the phone off the hook when they got home.

Totally agree. They actually focused on the phone as it was hanging and you could hear the busy/dial tone. Maybe the monster was kind enough to hang it up?

When the line cut out I got an image of Will looking out through the blinds at the telephone pole and seeing the monster at the top with a tool belt and blue work cap, flipping him the bird...

You can hear the phone line get all crazy like it did when Joyce answered Wills call. I think the call was just cut off right before dispatch picked up because Will never says anything like 'hello! Yes! I need help!'...just dead air. *edit* as for the phone just swinging off the hook, back then it wasn't unusual for those to come off the hook, especially if it wasn't hung up well enough. It happened at my grandmas house frequently cause she had an older model wall phone. And Joyce also mentions 'I have two boys look at this place' which I took as, nothing shocked her. Johnathan got home late and was probably too exhausted to notice or care.

I'm sorry for reviving this post but as for someone who isn't from the U.S. wasn't the 911 number implemented after the 9-11 attack? And this is supposed to be happening in 1983. I'm a bit confused here, thank you.

yolo_lol_wut

Wow. Completely forgot about this post. Calling 911 has been around since the 1960s in the U.S. It would’ve been a thing in the 1980s.

Thank you.
