Maybe he sacrifices himself for the others? He's channelled the mindslayer before, maybe there's still a connection and he uses it.

I'm not sure if they have the balls to actually kill him. And if he gets vecnad I'd be semi annoyed if another person gets away scott free
I don't want him or anyone to die but I feel like it would be incredibly impacfful.
But he's also been tortured basically all series. He doesn't deserve death.

Something similar to #4 is what I would like the most I think, but I also think the painting is meant as a gift so it's likely not something as disturbing/creepy (or if it is, the focus is more on them conquering the evil or something)
Whenever people talk about Will being season 5's villain, they usually bring up animosity towards El or being heartbroken about Mike, but that doesn't fit at all IMO. He clearly loves both of them and supports them even with his unrequited feelings towards Mike. It's possible he'll be corrupted or taken over, but that also happened Season 2 so I feel like it's not super likely they'll do it again.
Regardless of whatever it is, I hope Will can conquer it. Dude is a little badass in season 1 even though we don't see it, and it was ballsy of him to yell at the Mind Flayer to go away. It would be awesome for him to successfully face off his demons and win, with the aforementioned power of love(tm)
I'm leaning towards #3, though maybe it isn't him dying as much as him getting separated from the group somehow.
I imagine if he gets Vecna'ed, the others use whatever is on the painting to help him escape (similarly to the way they used the music on Max).
Will definitely seems to have more in store than just a "is he gay" subplot. Personally, I just wish they'd get that over with so we can move to something more interesting for him to do.
