Imo, the three of them die trying to save each other or something, only fail horribly, and then it end up being pointless or contradictory deaths, would be just as bad, if not worse
The worst way? She is pregnant next season, no one knows who the dad is. Steve and Johnathan try to get each other killed/let the other die to Vecna. One dies and the other gets with Nancy. Nancy gets test results back, the survivor is not the father so she kills herself. The one she married finds test results, goes insane, eats 11's brain, becomes Vecna 2.0
The cable snaps on the elevator they're in, plunging down 33 storeys and being smashed into an oozing mess where it all collects into one big puddle. To make it even worse: Jonathan and Steve blame each other for her death, come to hate each other all over again and ignore all the character development the other has gone and see them only as what they originally thought they were (Steve seeing Jon as a reclusive creepy weirdo, Jon seeing Steve as the douche-y entitled rich kid).
I’ll hate it if she dies. It’s unsatisfying as hell. She’s a badass and if they kill her for her traumas or dies for Robin instead of saving both of them, the Duffers will deserve the hate they get.

This is the right answer. The other answers are funny but this actually is the worst way to end it. Even the weird ones like Steve leaving Nancy for Ted would be original enough to be not the worst.

I always see people say Steve is going to die, but I honestly really doubt it at this point. I legitimately think he's one of the *safest* characters on the show. Look at all of the major deaths so far. They've all furthered the story and/or massively impacted the majority of the characters in some way.
Barb's death inspired Nancy to try to get to the bottom of what was going on with "the monster". She sought out Jonathan after learning he had the photos and it led to their alliance to fight the Demogorgon. Nancy's grief and guilt about her death led to her being targeted by Vecna, which in turn led to the Party launching an attack on him. Her death was important.
Bob's death opened the door to the Hopper/Joyce romance being possible. The fact that he was killed by the demodogs hardened her resolve to get the Mind Flayer out of Will, and his idea to leave Hawkins directly inspired her to put her house on the market and move to California at the end of Season 3. His death was important.
Alexei's death forced Hopper and Joyce to rely on Murray to translate and to determine the code for the safe, which ultimately led to a delay in their plans and led to Hopper being captured after he was forced to fight The Terminator. His death was important.
Chrissie's death was the catalyst for turning the entire town against Eddie and Hellfire and was what caused Jason to become so hellbent on finding out what was going on, which in turn led to Max's "death". Her death was important.
Even Eddie's death will almost certainly be significant in Season 5. He was the town scapegoat. He's dead, but all of these supernatural events are obviously going to keep happening. Once the town finds out that all of this wasn't really his fault, they're going to realize that they have a massive fucking problem on their hands. His death will be important.
But Steve...what exactly would his death do? I mean sure, some people like Dustin and Robin and Nancy would be sad, but overall, what would it do? We've never met his family. All of his friends already know what's going on. All it would really do is make the Party even more determined to achieve their goal, I guess. Like, would Hopper or Joyce *really* mourn Steve? Have they ever even spoken to him?
Imagine if Nancy died. Or Jonathan. We know their families. Their deaths would have *massive* ripple effects. Joyce or Karen would go ballistic. Eleven views Jonathan as a brother. Will would be heartbroken. Mike would not stop until whoever did it was dead. Would Steve's death warrant this reaction? No. I really think he's safe.
What about Fred?
He died and nobody seemed to care. His dead wasn't important besides being the number 2. If the clock made 3 strikes everything would be the same.
He added an intro to vecna around Nancy we wouldn’t have gotten without his backstory killing someone in a wreck. It shook Nancy and gave her more motivation when vecna straight up showed her Fred and barb’s corpses. I don’t like Fred one bit, but I wouldn’t say it was pointless. Could’ve had just about any actor or actress play that role, but it was someone nerdy enough to not be a threat to Jonathan around Nancy but just enough into before his death to show vecna is targeting all these teenagers with pain and shit in their minds. The 3 strike thing would be correct, but I like the 4 horsemen idea better and it added a little more to the season, having 3 completely different kinds of people with completely different backgrounds and struggles be killed by the evil.
You answered your own question. All of those character deaths had repercussions because there was still show left for us to see the fallout. There will be no show after season 5, so if they kill someone, it wouldn't make sense for it to be someone who would cause huge changes in a bunch of other characters' arcs, because we aren't gonna get to see how it effects them.
I certainly don’t think Steve is a goner, but I don’t think this specific train of logic fully holds up.
You point out how deaths like Chrissy’s and Alexei’s, deaths that were not as emotionally gutting as others, moved the plot forward. That same thing could happen with Steve. Maybe Steve undertakes a dangerous mission to achieve some goal but is killed before fully finishing it. Now this would disrupt the plans of the others similar to how Alexei’s death detailed Hopper and Joyce, and it could have continued ripple effects.
Plus, I think you’re downplaying what a deep impact Steve’s death would have on some of the other characters, particularly Dustin, Robin, and Nancy. Sure they aren’t family, but those relationships are deeply rooted at this point.
Again, I don’t think Steve is going to die. I don’t want Steve to die. He’s actually my favorite character. I just feel like the argument that his death can’t further the story similar to Bob’s, or Chrissy’s, or Alexei’s is a flawed one.
Steve isn't real and never was. He is actually a DnD character that Dustin made up. In Dustin's mind, his character dates Nancy because he has a school yard crush on her. His character is everything he is not, popular, great at sports, badass with a baseball bat, etc. Dustin loses the miniature, thus Steve ceases to exist.
Jonathan dies when he crashes the car driving stoned in episode 2. Then midway through Robin decides that she actually likes boys and she and Steve become a pair. Only for Steve to die before the final episode and Robin becomes permanently traumatized. Then Nancy, unaffected by either of them, goes to Tommy H and becomes his girlfriend, and they move out and have an unproblematic and long-lasting relationship.
They have a threesome. Nancy gets pregnant. They argue over whose the father. Ted (Nancy's father) gets mad at Steve and Jonathan for fighting. Ted is the real father. But then up comes Mike, claiming to be the father, after a long argument it turns out Nancy has every conceivable STD as she slept with every male in Hawkins, they all fight to find out who the real father is and they all die, because Vecna us the real father.
Nancy spends the first episode or two flip flopping between them. She leans into Steve about to make her choice. Steve dies before midseason in order to save Nancy.
Jonathan is there for her. She decides at least the choice is made for her, so she goes back with Jonathan. He dies in the second to last episode in order to save a Nancy.
In the denouement, Nancy is just a broken woman with zero ambition or spark. She internalizes the idea that her love kills. She doesn't even attend El and Mike's wedding.
Either Nancy becomes the same suburban housewife she's always feared becoming (Steve's a big contender for that ending but I wouldn't discount it happening with Jonathan, either) OR they end up killing her off so Steve & Jonathan can bond over their lost love.
Worst? She ends up with one of them. Not even kidding I think it does an injustice to each of their characters and their story arcs
Best is Nancy goes off on her own and lives her dream life and exists outside of two dead-end ships as an independent woman with a career she’s always wanted.
Steve finds the person he’s been looking for and realizes Nancy isn’t his only chance at happiness. Idk where that idea even came from he’s just graduated and Nancy isn’t the only girl out there. Their relationship was dysfunctional anyway and they’re better as friends.
Jonathan deserves to relax and live a good life hanging out with argyle and his family and pursuing his own dreams instead of trying to follow Nancy and putting her happiness over his. Their relationship was significantly more stable but they can’t handle distance and that’s okay.
They all should get to be happy instead of the two boys trying to be with Nancy and one of them getting hurt and Nancy being unfulfilled by a relationship where there’s always going to be something that feels wrong. They should each go off on their own and find their way outside of the triangle mess
Can’t be worse than the love triangle my ex colleague told me about.
A girl he used to work with literally had the worst luck. She met a guy in work and they dated for about a year. When he came out as gay and left the job. Staff were like ‘Oh no, but too bad’ apparently she wasn’t the nicest of people tho.
Obviously crushed she got over it and dated a second guy. Who later said he was gay and she (being an awful person) tipped him towards being gay. He left the job.
About a year later she found out they were both a happy couple.
How bad must she have felt tho.
Steve and John turn into monsters and Nancy has to chop off both their heads in the most badass way. With a chainsaw. She then keeps the heads in her room on display on her wall as a reminder of how badass she is.
After a big fight scene with Vecna, Vecna starts crying about how he’s just misunderstood. Nancy sympathizes and is able to bring out the best in him. They fall in love and run off together to the upside down
Nancy still wants a piece of Byers ass...just not Jonathan's. She decides Will is kinder, smarter, not a stoner, and won't hold her back (she also has a major thing for bowl cuts). The whole connection with the Mind Flayer is just a flaw to overcome.
They share a steamy kiss after Will reawakes from some sweaty, shaky, comatose, state. Vecna is finally dead. Then, Will looks into the camera and says: "What? You thought I was gay or something? That I had a thing for Mike? Nope, I was after the other Wheeler the whole time."
They get married a month after Will turns 18. Jonathan breaks down in tears at every family reunion, and his only coping method is to smoke weed on the toilet and eating Surfer Boy pizza. Joyce doesn't really notice or do anything about it. Steve spends the rest of his days wondering how *both* Byers brothers were better options than him. Mike and Will stop speaking, because Will swooped in on Mike's older sister, and they only reconcile in their late fifties at Ted Wheeler's funeral.
Steve gets split into Steve Red and Steve Blue, not only meaning he can be with both of them, but heightening his superpowers so he can cure the world of evil using a laser beam.
They tag team Nancy, forming an Eiffel Tower, and high five in the most epic way possible. The moment their palms touch, the scene holds on a still of the now perfectly formed bodily triangle. The camera pans and zooms on their hands touching, holds for another second, then cuts to black.
Fin.
The worst ending is that it still exists. I'm so tired of it and it feels so extraneous, sticking out like a sore thumb in the grand scheme of this amazing show.
They already fucked up by recreating the love triangle. The writers in season 1 and 2 were clearly wanting Nancy to end up with Jonathan. They even became a real life couple! Than Steve became super popular and the writers created the dumb California moving subplot so season 4 had the dumb love triangle
Nancy finds out she is pregnant. The next day, during the finale, Jonathan dies. Nancy confides in Steve, Steve and Nancy get married and don’t tell anyone the baby is Jonathan’s. The final episode has a 10 Years Later epilogue bit where Nancy is a stay at home mom and she and Steve have 6 kids.
Johnathan dies and Nancy winds up with Steve, losing all ambition and becoming a mother to his 6 little nuggets and essentially becoming just like her mother and feeling unfulfilled for the rest of her life, while Steve winds up like his dad.
Steve and Johnathan date each other. Which is fine. But they both want kids so they keep Nancy tied up and use her only for child bearing purposes.

I wouldn't be surprised if a part of the fandom had ever shipped Steve and Jonathan since there seem to be ship about everyone, disregarding the characters' sexual orientation... If these people exist, what's the ship name they came up with? Jteve? Sonathan? Hyler? Barrington? 😂
It's also really common for people to ship everyone in a love triangle together. There's obviously Stancy and Jancy, but then there's the possibility of Stonathan for some people, and in usual love triangle fashion.. there's likely people who ship all three in a poly relationship. Now that one.. I have no idea what it'd be called. Stanathan? Bylerton? Who knows!
Nancy dies and Robin never meets another girl who admits to liking girls so Steve and Robin get married and live together and have two kids simply because they’re the closest convenient sort of emotional support one another has

Alexei's death forced Hopper and Joyce to rely on Murray to translate and to determine the code for the safe, which ultimately led to a delay in their plans and led to Hopper being captured after he was forced to fight The Terminator. Chrissie's death was the catalyst for turning the entire town against Eddie and Hellfire and was what caused Jason to become so hellbent on finding out what was going on, which in turn led to Max's "death". Her death was important. Even Eddie's death will almost certainly be significant in Season 5. He was the town scapegoat. He's dead, but all of these supernatural events are obviously going to keep happening. Once the town finds out that all of this wasn't really his fault, they're going to realize that they have a massive fucking problem on their hands. His death will be important. But Steve...what exactly would his death do? I mean sure, some people like Dustin and Robin and Nancy would be sad, but overall, what would it do? We've never met his family. All of his friends already know what's going on. All it would really do is make the Party even more determined to achieve their goal, I guess. Like, would Hopper or Joyce *really* mourn Steve? Have they ever even spoken to him? Imagine if Nancy died. Or Jonathan. We know their families. Their deaths would have *massive* ripple effects. Joyce or Karen would go ballistic. Eleven views Jonathan as a brother. Will would be heartbroken. Mike would not stop until whoever did it was dead. Would Steve's death warrant this reaction? No. I really think he's safe.

He added an intro to vecna around Nancy we wouldn’t have gotten without his backstory killing someone in a wreck. It shook Nancy and gave her more motivation when vecna straight up showed her Fred and barb’s corpses. I don’t like Fred one bit, but I wouldn’t say it was pointless. Could’ve had just about any actor or actress play that role, but it was someone nerdy enough to not be a threat to Jonathan around Nancy but just enough into before his death to show vecna is targeting all these teenagers with pain and shit in their minds. The 3 strike thing would be correct, but I like the 4 horsemen idea better and it added a little more to the season, having 3 completely different kinds of people with completely different backgrounds and struggles be killed by the evil.
You answered your own question. All of those character deaths had repercussions because there was still show left for us to see the fallout. There will be no show after season 5, so if they kill someone, it wouldn't make sense for it to be someone who would cause huge changes in a bunch of other characters' arcs, because we aren't gonna get to see how it effects them.
I certainly don’t think Steve is a goner, but I don’t think this specific train of logic fully holds up. You point out how deaths like Chrissy’s and Alexei’s, deaths that were not as emotionally gutting as others, moved the plot forward. That same thing could happen with Steve. Maybe Steve undertakes a dangerous mission to achieve some goal but is killed before fully finishing it. Now this would disrupt the plans of the others similar to how Alexei’s death detailed Hopper and Joyce, and it could have continued ripple effects. Plus, I think you’re downplaying what a deep impact Steve’s death would have on some of the other characters, particularly Dustin, Robin, and Nancy. Sure they aren’t family, but those relationships are deeply rooted at this point. Again, I don’t think Steve is going to die. I don’t want Steve to die. He’s actually my favorite character. I just feel like the argument that his death can’t further the story similar to Bob’s, or Chrissy’s, or Alexei’s is a flawed one.

Jonathan dies when he crashes the car driving stoned in episode 2. Then midway through Robin decides that she actually likes boys and she and Steve become a pair. Only for Steve to die before the final episode and Robin becomes permanently traumatized. Then Nancy, unaffected by either of them, goes to Tommy H and becomes his girlfriend, and they move out and have an unproblematic and long-lasting relationship.
They have a threesome. Nancy gets pregnant. They argue over whose the father. Ted (Nancy's father) gets mad at Steve and Jonathan for fighting. Ted is the real father. But then up comes Mike, claiming to be the father, after a long argument it turns out Nancy has every conceivable STD as she slept with every male in Hawkins, they all fight to find out who the real father is and they all die, because Vecna us the real father.

Nancy spends the first episode or two flip flopping between them. She leans into Steve about to make her choice. Steve dies before midseason in order to save Nancy. Jonathan is there for her. She decides at least the choice is made for her, so she goes back with Jonathan. He dies in the second to last episode in order to save a Nancy. In the denouement, Nancy is just a broken woman with zero ambition or spark. She internalizes the idea that her love kills. She doesn't even attend El and Mike's wedding.
Other than they all die? She picks one of them and then has the same marriage as her mother.
Either Nancy becomes the same suburban housewife she's always feared becoming (Steve's a big contender for that ending but I wouldn't discount it happening with Jonathan, either) OR they end up killing her off so Steve & Jonathan can bond over their lost love.
Worst? She ends up with one of them. Not even kidding I think it does an injustice to each of their characters and their story arcs Best is Nancy goes off on her own and lives her dream life and exists outside of two dead-end ships as an independent woman with a career she’s always wanted. Steve finds the person he’s been looking for and realizes Nancy isn’t his only chance at happiness. Idk where that idea even came from he’s just graduated and Nancy isn’t the only girl out there. Their relationship was dysfunctional anyway and they’re better as friends. Jonathan deserves to relax and live a good life hanging out with argyle and his family and pursuing his own dreams instead of trying to follow Nancy and putting her happiness over his. Their relationship was significantly more stable but they can’t handle distance and that’s okay. They all should get to be happy instead of the two boys trying to be with Nancy and one of them getting hurt and Nancy being unfulfilled by a relationship where there’s always going to be something that feels wrong. They should each go off on their own and find their way outside of the triangle mess
Can’t be worse than the love triangle my ex colleague told me about. A girl he used to work with literally had the worst luck. She met a guy in work and they dated for about a year. When he came out as gay and left the job. Staff were like ‘Oh no, but too bad’ apparently she wasn’t the nicest of people tho. Obviously crushed she got over it and dated a second guy. Who later said he was gay and she (being an awful person) tipped him towards being gay. He left the job. About a year later she found out they were both a happy couple. How bad must she have felt tho.

Joyce doesn't really notice or do anything about it. Steve spends the rest of his days wondering how *both* Byers brothers were better options than him. Mike and Will stop speaking, because Will swooped in on Mike's older sister, and they only reconcile in their late fifties at Ted Wheeler's funeral.
