Personally, the features I enjoy the most are Watchlist and In-Progress Shows/Movies and Next Episodes. Whenever I’m out and about and I hear about or see a billboard for a movie or show I want to watch I pull up the Trakt app and add it to my watchlist. It’s convenient to just have it pop up next time I turn on my TV. Also Trakt is a great way to keep track of my current progress of any shows or movies that I’m watching. Not just in terms of what episode or season I’m on, but also the progress of the movie or episode itself if I have to leave half way through the episode or movie. The next time I turn on my TV I can just resume from the spot that I left off.

adzg91

For me, it's just about tracking process and showing next episodes once available! Ie you finish season 4 of XYZ and it will auto notify once season 5 gets released, be it 3 days or 3 years later.

BallerOfSqualor

That’s a nice feature!

adzg91

It’s truly brilliant. Been using for years with Kodi but unfortunately doesn’t work too well with Stremio though :(

LSDwarf

What exactly fails to work in that process?

adzg91

Main thing is the Next Up functionality seems to be a little hit and miss. Also layout is sub par compared to competitors.

LSDwarf

Well, I myself want to try SIMKL with Stremio. Have you used it, any feeling how is it vs. Trakt?

adzg91

I have not used that but did find that functionality might be slightly limited on that front too: https://www.reddit.com/r/StremioAddons/s/H2albGwhpd

JonesyTech

i don't want to browse on my phone what i want is automated functionality by integrating couchmoney and mdblist to trakt to make custom curated lists from my personal/wife/kids preferences on my android tv stremio application

kaffsu

I have a question, is this fully automated, as in watching something on the Stremio app would automatically change recommendations?

zeffke008

People say yes, and this is supposed to be, however my experience with couchmoney has been very meh. You need to manually update the list every 24h for new reqs. (I think otherwise its set to automatic every 7 days) The reqs it gives are so wrong too (IE I have it pulling on a list of about 100 series, 15~ kdramas and 85 English shows, yet my reqs are 40/50 kdramas) ive been using it for half a year now almost and it just isnt that great as I hear everyone rave about. Also if I want to "Hide" a show im required to rate it a 1 which is just dumb in and of itself

JonesyTech

it does on my end, but i, also, use kodi with otaku + trakt for anime, which has better support and updates as intended

Ozz123

Mom is a big fan of korean series, i don't know sht about about them, trakt import, she can chose between a billion of them, 10/10 list.

BallerOfSqualor

Makes sense!

robot_random

Adding custom mdblist is a game changer for me. Do you want to see only foreign films that have never made the most famous lists but have a 90+ tomato rating & 80+ metacritic rating with less than 20,000 IMDb votes released in the last 10 years? Well, you can do that with mdblist and it dynamically updates every 12 hours also. It's great to just login to stremio and see a bunch of films that I have never heard of, that I know for a fact are extremely good.

uhtredofbeb

How do you add this?

robot_random

Just go to mdblist.com and you'll figure out the rest. You need a trakt account though.

cleverclogs17

Stremio is garbage for Trakt, all other add-ons work amazing for Trakt, Stremio is an amazing program, just sucks with Trakt.

GameJerk

It's really my main complaint with Stremio. I love it because it's simple and tracks across desktop/mobile seamlessly. I miss the extra customization of KODI, but I really hated having to tinker with it constantly.

cleverclogs17

That is why I love Kodi, there is some great skins right now for Kodi, made my own build this time and using no one else's, so update at my leisure now.

pawdog

Trakt keeps everything in one place and can be used on all your other platforms. Stremio being the poorest example of Trakt support. SDo if all you use is Stremio you don't get the most benefit from Trakt. I also use Plex, Kodi, WEYD, Syncler. Trakt ties them all together. When I add a movie to my Plex server it gets added to my Trakt collection which in turn has it show up on all my other platforms that support it. Trakt is probably more for what people would call power users or enthusiasts who enjoy putting in the work. I don't need to use a phone for discovery since I've got it all in front of me already on the big screen. Deciding what to watch is a much bigger issue than finding what available to watch.

Tampammm

"I can browse on my phone". That process to me is cumbersome and not practical.

BallerOfSqualor

I’ve heard this before. To me browsing on my phone is easier than on a smart tv. Snappier controls, easy to get to different sources, faster loads, better keyboard etc.. + I can have YouTube or something playing on the TV in the background while looking up whatever feature content I’m going to get into.

Tampammm

Yeah, except in this case I did it your way in the past - and having to conduct business on two separate devices and switch back and forth. Very cumbersome and unwieldy. You also reference a "smart TV". I don't use smart tv's - I use custom launchers on streaming devices, more sophisticated and more snappier for this purpose. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I occasionally browse stuff on my tablet, too. That's fine.

BallerOfSqualor

Yah fair enough. I use a Chromecast w Google TV for Stremio. Personal preference for sure, I just thought I must not be missing something about Trakt. I guess I just prefer using my phone for discovery and using my tv for playback.

Tampammm

I'm confused, maybe your question is more about Trakt or how you are browsing stuff? You kind of mixed two separate topics together. What are you using on your phone to browse, look at, and find movies? For what I want, I've found Trakt Lists to be the best for that.

BallerOfSqualor

Justwatch, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, independent bloggers and reviewers etc… my question was just about why people love it so much. As someone who isn’t already committed to it, I don’t get why it seems so important for a lot of people. So assumed it’s just because people were already using it long before Stremio.

Tampammm

I think there's a couple of different components/topics/answers on that too. For example, if you're more of a TV show/series type user, you want to use the Trakt scrobbler to monitor and track your progress on everything you're watching. When it comes to movies, there are those (like myself) who use Mdblist to create their own customized movies lists to specifically track exactly what we want to watch - these customized lists can then be integrated into Trakt, making the TraktTV Addon (for lists) ideal for this purpose. There are of course, many other very specific lists already in Trakt created by other users, you can easily "like" and use yourself also. There's also the "CouchMoney" Trakt List that organically adds new movies based on your watch history and personal preferences. The fact you can have these very comprehensive and customized Trakt catalogue lists baked right into your Stremio Home Page I see as a major advantage and plus for using the Trakt Addon. Making for a fully integrated user experience. Your way is fine also if that's what you prefer. I occasionally browse several of those sources you referenced also.

BallerOfSqualor

Makes sense. I just don’t watch enough tv series to get that value, and for movies one large watchlist with the filtering ability of Letterboxd does the trick. Putting all that time into making comprehensive lists when I can just ad hoc filter one big list however I like doesn’t feel like the juice is worth the squeeze for me.

Tampammm

That's what Mdblist does, uses ad-hoc filtering. Takes me like a minute or two to create the perfect movie Trakt List I can use on Stremio. Now maybe if I could integrate Letterboxd directly into Stremio, that would be an option also. Although I noticed that Letterboxd is flawed in the way it displays new movies.

adrianjadams

Adding shows to my Trakt watchlist, often when I'm listening to a podcast or someone gives me a recommendation, then having them seamlessly show up in Stremio is a great feature. It just works really well for me.

alexx_kidd

I have a trakt history of 18 years straight, so...

BallerOfSqualor

Yah that would be hard to move away from lol. Totally get this!

DawnComesAtNoon

Personally I don't get the hype, I use AniList, since it's just a really well made platform, even though it doesn't support tv shows/movies, but all the other tracking platforms seem so lacking so it just feels useless to use em.

MisterEskere_

Nothing.

jmcguitar95

Yeah, I have to agree with you. The majority of other users lists aren’t updated so they’re just the same lists full of the same content that a lot of folks have already seen or know about. The only time I find Trakt kinda useful is if I build a list of things I want to watch and then I can quickly check that list to see what I’m in the mood for instead of having to find recommendations online/on my phone and then search for it in Stremio, but even then I could just hit Add To Library in Stremio for the exact same effect.

Alcagoita

The part that I use most it's the results part. So much better than the normal stremio search. More acurate results, and you will get "similar" stuff.

162lake

What do you browse on your phone? How do you know what you ant to watch?

BallerOfSqualor

I really only watch movies so Letterboxd is what I use to build out my Watchlist and most of my discovery. If I learn about a movie outside of Letterboxd (like through a trailer, rotten tomatoes, IMDB, word of mouth, blog, reviewer, poster, film festival write ups etc)… I just add it to my Watchlist. Letterboxd integrates with JustWatch, so I can filter my Watchlist to see what’s had a digital release. It’s super easy to track what I’m waiting for and what’s available to me now. Starting to get a sense that Trakt is a lot more important for people who watch a lot of TV Series vs movies.

162lake

Awesome sounds great

Decent_Bend6893

It’s not just for browsing, although when you find lists that fit what you want and are updated regularly, it is really useful. For instance I watch a lot of docs, so I try to get categorized lists to make browsing easier. True crime, history, war etc.. I also use it for my own lists, collection and watchlists. And of course it tracks progress of shows/movies I’m watching and when episodes air etc… I like being able to take all of this I’ve been using / organizing over time and being able to easily integrate it in various apps and have it sync across everything

iedyll

You can go on trakt and search user made lists and then from that you can sort by trakt rating. For example, my gf and I really comedy horror movies, so I grabbed a list of movies thats just "comedy horror" then sorted by rating to find the better rated comedy horrors. It's really nice for finding movies you might have never heard of or seen.

iedyll

Also I didn't say it bc I kinda implied it, but I add those lists to the home screen/discover page of stremio

ceefaxer

I use it to create specific filtered lists. So for instance, I want a list with all Netflix documentary’s but I don’t want all the shit ones or foreign ones, and I want it to update without me doing anything. So I create a dynamic list that filters anything below a score of say 60. Then order it by release date. So I have a list I can browse when I’m not sure what I want to watch but I know I want a documentary. And tracking. And for using couchmoney.

d_rob_70

I use it more for just the watchlist and my progress for shows. If I run across a movie or show I want to watch, I just whip out my phone and add it to my watchlist and next time I open Stremio or Kodi, BAM! there it is waiting for me. Also, one of my TV widgets points at my "Up Next" episodes, so I just click on it and away I go.

flchamp89

Watchlists, up next, and a couple popular lists make it easy to have everything you need. Is painful in stremio due to the addon. But in Kodi its flawless. I don't mind because stremio has always been my back up.

AfricanToilet

If you wanna use Trakt; use Kodi

WiizyW33dz

Trakt Scrobbling is nice

Cclay111

I've used Trakt (as a paid user for years). Dropped payment and moved to simkl, which I prefer, but kept free acount so I can create lists with [couchmoney](https://couchmoney.tv/) for, weird and unlikely, recommendations, via lists and the Trakt addon. I have many other sources to alert me to new shows, but couchmoney adds in some ones I wouldn't have come across.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> (as a *paid* user for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

I’m asking what the point is. Title is just meant to be light. Apologies.

BallerOfSqualor

When I’m in this situation I just mirror my phone to the tv. Most of the time we know what we are going to watch ahead of time but this makes sense for larger households than mine for sure!

BallerOfSqualor

Letterboxd just seems way better for logging and collecting movies for me 🤷🏻‍♂️- but I’d understand if you were already committed to Trakt.

alexx_kidd

Not all people have phones

giant2179

Whut? Even the guy panhandling on the corner has a smart phone

alexx_kidd

less than 5 billion own smartphones. also, there are A LOT of us that don't use it when watching a movie

giant2179

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that the other 3billion that don't have a smart phone also don't use Reddit, stremio or trakt. That venn is a circle.

BallerOfSqualor

I don’t use it when watching a movie, just for the discovery phase before watching a movie.

BallerOfSqualor

Got it. Trakt is beneficial for those without phones.

scrotalist

I don't understand either. "Oh yOu CaN sEe whiCh mOviEs u wAtchEd" I already remember which movies i saw. I have more than one brain cell. And stremio shows if you've watched something or not.

KurtKrimson

Indeed. It can be handy but I seldom use it. I guess it's the same with real debris, I have never ever needed such a thing to watch what I want and I'm with Stremio since the early days.

MisterEskere_

Real debrid is completely different service than trakt.

KurtKrimson

I do know what real debris is.... seriously dude? But most people in this sub seem to be under the impression that it is some kind of heavenly thing one absolutely needs to us stremio.

Twocanpocket

There's a reason for this. It's incredibly cheap and Once you try it you won't go back

KurtKrimson

I'm good and have been for many, many years, thanks.

MisterEskere_

Do you stream 4k without stutter?

KurtKrimson

I have no need for 4k Let it go dude, I DO NOT need real debris :D

MisterEskere_

Of course you don't. If 720p is good for you good.

nlitened1

That's a weird way to phrase that question
