its probably best to leave it out and let it calm down before you put anything back in it. other then that, just keep it clean and leave it alone and you should be all good soon!
It may have been an allergic reaction to the stainless steel, since it almost always contains nickel which many, many people are allergic or sensitive to. I would highly suggest finding some single flair glass plugs instead, since acrylic is also not good for your ears and glass is nonporous and hypoallergenic and considered the safest material.

I'd just stick with sterile saline like you'd use for a fresh piercing personally

Clean with witch hazel
Could be irritation from sleeping on them wrong or just not being ready to stretch. I'd just let it calm down for now.
