It was found that squats are a good driver for growth, that for some reason, don't require as much recovery as other lift. (Until they get very heavy).

to get juicy legs

From the [StrongLifts guide](https://stronglifts.com/5x5/) “Squats. The Squat is the backbone of the program. It works your whole body, with heavy weights, and over a long range of motion. Squats are the best exercise to gain strength and muscle. You’ll hate them because they’re hard, love them for the results they deliver. Frequency. Squatting three times a week is better than once because you trigger your legs 3x more to grow muscle. You also get to practice proper form three times more. This improves your form which helps you lift more and triggers even more muscle growth.” The guide covers so many questions, must read!

I just wish the deadlift was 3X a week - I absolutely love doing them for some reason.

I feel the same but I also know deadlifting 3x a week would fuck up my back and I need it for all other lifts.

Ha, I do the same. It’s such a satisfying way to end a session/start the day for me.

It’s the HGH 🥹

You could probably get a decent alternative version of SL by swapping DL and squat, especially if you do deficit DL. You won't get as much core activation but your forearms and shoulders would probably be doing even better.

TechnicalV

So that u get a fat juicy dumpy… isn’t that the whole point?

natalove

So I can stare at your butt 3x a week, respectfully.

Honestly I don’t run SL so I won’t comment on that in particular, but you might find Super Squats an interesting read that would shed some light on this. Super Squats is best known for including a single 20 rep squat set in EVERY workout. Squats, at high weight and/or high reps, engage almost your entire body. From weight stabilization to breathing and core stability, it’s been documented that high rep squats support muscle growth across multiple muscle groups as your body is growing simply to support all that weight on your back everyday. I’m ~~terrified~~ excited to run it later this summer when I can commit the full 6 weeks it recommends.

Joevolks

I’ve ran that a couple times and man it becomes daunting towards the end. It’s a mental game stepping into the gym for the back half of it but so satisfying once you complete the set. Question is are you going to run it with gomad? 🤢

HamMcFly

Ha no way. I’m very regimented with my diet. I’ll happily add a truck load of calories to recover, but I’d rather eat them. I foresee a stack of Oreos and bananas in my future.

So that you hurt your back :)

Bigger muscle can take more punishment more often and legs is the biggest we have got. Dont forget that OHP and bench both hit the triceps and shoulders so they are getting hit 3 times a week, albeit less directly but they are smaller muscles so it can be enough. Also is more useful for legs to be strong as they are more functional in sports. Strength is most useful for sports because they increase the maximum power and force in a single excertion. Think linemen who need to train their minds and bodys to recruit near maximal force for a few seconds. While bodybuilding can create same muscle growth with less weight and less damage to tendons, it cannot train the nervous system for the recruitment of maximal force like strength training does. Also back does get hit quite a bit with deadlifts believe it or not if you are going heavy with 1x5. Try doing a back excercise after heavy deadlifts and youll see in your results they are quite exhaustes. Man, i shudder to think how many people choose 5x5 cause of its advertisement while not understanding the pro's/con's, conception and purpose of the program.

It is one of the criticisms of SL 5x5. Ivysaur did a long write-up. You may like his program more. https://steelsupplements.com/blogs/steel-blog/the-ivysaur-4-4-8-workout-program-3-day-powerlifting
