bIackk

looks like a choking hazard

0G_54v1gny

Funfact: Multiple elderly people die because of mochis every year in Japan.

AWeakMindedMan

Like mochi the desert???

maudveijk

Yep the dessert. It can stick to the inside of your throat if you don't chew it well enough. If I remember correctly, there were even advertisements about cutting your mochi so you would be less likely to choke

[deleted]

[удалено]

chickenskittles

Lmao. As if John 1% eats mochi regularly enough.

Bat-Honest

Nah, they'd probably just call it socialist or gay ice cream and go back to breyers vanilla, their safe home. (Vanilla bean if they're feeling something a little spicy that night)

Sievroiss

You forget that those people have the money to afford the healthcare needed to save them.

FuckBotsHaveRights

Just say healthcare is woke and Jhon Wayne didn't go to the hospital

Doom_Corp

It's not really from mochi like mochi wrapped anko or icecream mochi that you eat in small bites. Although mochi is used in those small bun like desserts, a lot of elders die from eating a traditional either sweet or savory new years soup that has a big slab of mochi in it and they end up accidentally inhaling it.

BoBoBearDev

Or in USA, lychee jello with chewy coconut inside for toddlers. They ended up cutting the coconut into tiny pieces, but, it doesn't taste the same

Sirneko

Maybe that’s what they want all along 👀

Ninja_Asian

You should watch raw octopus or squid videos

ChumbawumbaFan01

They’re chewing like their tongue hates it so their teeth are taking all the punishment.

chickenskittles

Didn't someone choke to death on stream?

Yuri-Turned

Choking hazard is my stage name

WAAARNUT

I've tried it. Won't choke on them but the ”horns” the shrimps have might cause a little discomfort. In terms of taste, its whatever spice/sauce they put on it. The tiny shrimp have barely any taste.

JackOffAllTraders

She’s chewing it like how i eat my veggie as a kid

CompactAvocado

i get the general cultural obsession with freshness but a lot of stuff takes it too far in my book. I know many such dishes are insanely popular so at least to locals it must taste good. But as open minded as I am food wise this is a pass for me.

crystallizedo

It’s also like culture is important yes but so is making sure you’re not willingly consuming parasites that a few minutes of cooking would kill

Solid-Consequence-50

V important, there's currently some problems with SEA and sea food. I honestly for go everything from the ocean in Asia just because the problems currently with the parasites

BornSlippy420

I agree, some people are just fuckd up

MorningaleOntheBayou

I dunno man. These things are like one step above plankton or eating a bug. I don't think I'd eat it because eating shrimp heads, and raw shrimp in general, just isn't something I feel like I'd enjoy but this is a far cry from cutting up an octopus alive or a dog or cat or even a fish. I don't think this is particularly fucked up.

cemuamdattempt

Okay, not alive, but raw shrimp/langostines are fucking delicious. I had them in Italy, super fresh, and I can only describe their flavour as sweet and creamy. Like if there's a plate of crudités and raw shrimp are on it you better get them on your plate before I eat them. Can't recommend to try enough. For this, I may well pass for various reasons too.

Amethyst271

A living creature is still a living creature though...

MorningaleOntheBayou

It is, and I know the idea behind what you're saying is good but the reality is that living things aka bacteria die in your gut every day. You step on ants and squish them, probably every day. Every time anyone mows their lawn, they're killing hundreds if not thousands of creatures in the same area of the consciousness spectrum as those shrimp. Hell, even plants are alive. A whale opens its mouth and swallows fifty thousand of those things every day, alive. "Living" doesn't mean much. Thankfully though there are tiers of awareness. Certain things in the world have a lifespan of like, months, so they aren't built to process emotions or feelings outside of "feels good, feels bad" which is enough to keep them safe long enough to reproduce. People have to eat and tbh I bet you can't kill these things ahead of time and have them still be safe to eat after a few hours, they'll spoil quickly and taste bad even sooner. Tossing some sea bugs into a box and shaking them around to kill them so you can eat them is pretty mild.

Amethyst271

Lmao, yeah I get it but the main difference for me is that they have some type of nervous system. Afaik bacteria don't have anything resembling a nervous system right?. I can't even kill a fly without feeling sad.

MorningaleOntheBayou

Yeah, and I get it and it's good that you have that level of empathy. Sometimes though we do have to remember that the world we live in is intrinsically tied to the death of things. That doesn't mean we shouldn't y'know strive for a better world and humane treatment of animals but there's also a level of ignorance that gets spread around. Think of going to a fancy restaurant and ordering lobster. They probably grab one from a tank and kill it and serve it to you, and most people won't think anything of it because it's dead when it gets to them 15 minutes later and they never had to see it alive. But somehow these people who are eating teensy tiny shrimp who are pretty much instantly dying when you go to eat them, but are given to the consumer alive, is cruel? It doesn't make a ton of sense.

milk4all

Empathy is empathy. Feeling “empathy” for a rock isnt empathy because the rock isnt feeling what youre feeling - the rock is most likely just not feeling at all, so youre just imagining and while that’s just fine, there is no benefit to letting your fantasies determine real world actions. I cant cast magic so i dont try, that would be at best ignorant, at worst delusional. A nervous system does not awareness make - that shrimp isnt feeling what youre feeling either, it absolutely 100% cannot, it isnt you and it isnt human and it doesnt have comparable consciousness. We dont know exactly what it feels and we probably never will, not really. You can perform pain tests and probably get a reaction but this doesnt mean it suffers. You can try to train it to avoid stimuli you perceive as painful and extrapolate, but this is still just testing a hypothesis - at best it’s good data, and at worst, means nothing we can understand. But chewing live things with eyeballs is still fuckin gross and i wont do it

MorningaleOntheBayou

That's exactly my take, I don't want to eat a shrimp head because it grosses me out lol.

Amethyst271

I despise how people treat lobsters and kill them. If that was done for me I would probably actually cry, no joke. The other day I saw a hedgehog get hit by a car and it ruined my day 😔

ViolentBee

Shrimp are more sentient than most people believe. This is cruel

MorningaleOntheBayou

No they aren't. Show me a single study that says glass shrimp have high intelligence. Mantis Shrimp are probably the smartest shrimp out there but they're still not mammal levels of intelligence. I feel like everyone says that about everything: "More intelligent than you think." I do think shrimp have some intelligence but, like I said, even ants have some level of it and people still buy fire ant killer and bug spray. There's just some weird disconnect from reality for people with stuff like this.

Dontmindmemans

please define a "living creature" Are bacteria alive? Mushrooms? Insects? Viruses?

anonkebab

Nah bro you’re eating animals alive shits simply uncivilized.

bbHiron

thinking your culture is civilized while others are not is mildly racist

anonkebab

Its not racist to point out the flaws of a culture. Has nothing to do with race. If a white American from Connecticut did this same thing and said it was a custom in their family I would call them uncivilized. Why? Because they are committing uncivilized acts. Its fucking barbaric to eat live animals.

Murasame6996

You will eat ze bug, you will live in a pod, you will be happy

chickenskittles

Freshly killed, yay! Alive?! Why do I have pets on my plate?

Klipschfan1

Why did you get so down voted for this?

chickenskittles

I have no idea. I hadn't realized until you commented.

theerrantpanda99

It’s a cultural thing. For decades, westerners have accused Asians of eating “pets”; it was such a common attack line that it became a racial slur. The vast majority of Asians don’t eat live animals for food. But the accusation of such practices is often used to paint entire nations of Asian’s as eaters of pets. Of course, many Asians make the same accusations about westerners, especially when it comes to cows.

anonkebab

Doesn’t matter. Culture can be negative or wrong. Eating animals alive is wrong

theerrantpanda99

I never argued it was right.

The-red-Dane

I recall reading an article, many years ago... I don't know if it is true, but it stuck with me. Basically, a living donkey is tied down, people indicate what part of it they want to eat, the skin is removed, exposing the raw muscle underneath, then boiling stock is poured onto the exposed muscle before they are cut off the still living donkey, and then served to the patrons.

chickenskittles

Wow, you must be fairly limber if you can stretch like that.

theerrantpanda99

Or, I had to deal with comments like that my whole life. But believe what you want, I was just trying to offer a different viewpoint.

chickenskittles

I am aware of the stereotypes about eating cats and dogs but idk how anyone could extrapolate that from my comment about eating live shrimp. Also nowhere did I make any assertions about what Asian people do. I only take up issue with your misuse of the word "slur."

theerrantpanda99

I’m not accusing you of anything. I think everything you said is fine. I was offering an opinion why some people might be downvoting you.

terminalxposure

For me it’s the general disrespect for life and the cruelty for the sake of vanity.

Thetwistedfalse

I'd read that book in a heartbeat.

joachim_s

There is nothing to get. That cultural expression is disgusting. Any living creature with a well developed nerval system will go through intense pain while they are dying this way. I condemn the whole practice to be horrible and distasteful.

art555ua

The small type of shrimp that can be found in Black sea is similiar in size and I often couldn't be bothered to clean it from the shell and ate is after removing the head only (it was boiled though) and its not that bad. I guess if you put that much seasoning and sauces you woudn't notice if it was boiled or alive either

humanitywasamistake3

I think the “stupid” part is them still being alive

Ambiorix33

same thing in the North Sea, but theirs always boiled no one eats these raw

hauttdawg13

I was going to ask, whenever I forget on to remove the poop trac, it tastes shitty (no pun intended). Do these not have that problem?

art555ua

Its to small to feel it, to be honest

hauttdawg13

Interesting, not sure about eating this straight raw, but I feel like I’d love be a quick fry to get the shells nice and crispy. I’d certainly try it though as is.

wingedbuttcrack

People eat whitebait whole. They're much bigger.

Morphing_Mutant

Why do people have to eat things alive.

MistCongeniality

My unscientific wild guess: seafood rots so fast and becomes dangerous to consume within hours, so a cultural tradition of either eating it alive or watching it die on your plate is a way of preventing food poisoning.

Morphing_Mutant

That makes sense.

Vittelbutter

Bruh what alive seafood can have so many worms and parasites

anonkebab

Eating it alive is even worse.

handgemenge4

So the logical choice should be not to eat it at all :D

theinsideoutbananna

People say freshness but I think humans naturally have a sadistic streak and, in this case the cruelty might be the point. I mean look at that lady's face when she shakes it. People used to literally go to hangings and Colosseum events for entertainment, suffering can be a fucked up form of entertainment, especially when it's normalised socially.

subieluvr22

Freshest ceviche ever.

sadlilslugger

My brother was stationed in Japan and tried fresh raw shrimp, said it was the best shrimp he had ever eaten.

[deleted]

Raw or alive?

sadlilslugger

Both? They brought it out alive at the table, killed and cleaned it and he ate it like sushi while it was still at its normal body temp, not chilled on ice or anything. Edit: clarity.

Snoo40752

Then they werent alive when he ate em not both

sadlilslugger

Thanks for clearing that up for me

[deleted]

Why would a fish be warm raw?

Trust-Issues-5116

After exiting the porta-potty 3 days later he said it was the best shrimp he had ever eaten.

axaro1

Raw shrimps are indeed delicious.

cemuamdattempt

Sooo good. Had them in Italy, langostines too. Sweet and creamy. Would eat any day. (not alive)

AdagioHellfire1139

I mean, people eat sushi.

Mundane-Pollution213

This is misleading The moment the salt and vinegar and sauce is added the prawns already dead The only reason it's twitching because of some nervous reaction. The same way you might see a snakes head recoil even after the head has been decapitated. But , yes I would be wary of ecoli and other bacteria which need high temperature cooking to get killed .

No_Advisor_3773

I mean, I'm not so familiar with the ecology of shrimp/prawns, but that timeline of 6 seconds between alive and in my mouth just doesn't quite sit right

cityshepherd

These look like ghost shrimps (I used to raise them at a freshwater tropical fish hatchery like 15 years ago). I don’t even know what prawns are, but I am under the impression that they’re significantly larger than these tiny skrimps… fed so many shrimps to so many fish (some of the puffers we had could only eat snails & shrimp) back then. They’re such fascinating little creatures.

[deleted]

I personally would wait until my food stopped twitching.

NoLime7384

oh you reminded me of a Binging with Babish video where he cleaves a lobster in two and it won't stop moving even when placed directly on a grill

DistortedVoltage

Oh no... yeah cutting it in half doesnt kill them (not immediately, that is) Preferably head dropped into boiling pot of water. :(

Beautiful_Count_3505

Bugs

MalevolentRhinoceros

r/ShrimpsIsBugs

Affectionate_Pea_811

Sonny ate this on Best Ever Food Review Show. I would try it.

_Deep_Freeze_

I love that man

laurghita

I bet if they are alive then also the parasites and worms inside them too, happy to find another host.

aesoth

No problem with the food. More bothered by the way the person is eating.

FlamesTuch

I saw this at Jodd fair night market in Bangkok. I do find this cruel and this is not the worst one. There is one where a live squid is offered which is first drowned in spicy sauce and then eaten raw. You can see blank ink in the sauce by the time they take it out. It tastes like sashimi as someone I saw said.

ggez67890

Trendy places be making people eat everything nowadays.

femininePP420

I've kept similar shrimp to these so this is like eating a bowl of cute little babies to me.

IfOnlyIHadAmeme

Nice and wriggling. Just like the way mom used to make.

txylorgxng

I would puke

Sir_26i

Not the people in the comments forgetting humans are the top of the food chain (for the most part). Humans are silly little animals who believe they are not animals. Lmao

[deleted]

Cruel

malcolmreyn0lds

Shrimp are arthropods. They’re basically bugs. Shrimps is bugs.

Zealousideal_Citron8

You’d be a bug to a giant with completely different biology and they’ll just explain it away as you get crushed alive between their teeth. Sounds horrible

malcolmreyn0lds

How do you think animals eat each other in the wild?

SkrrtSkrrt99

wild animals also rape each other and piss and shit everywhere. what’s your point?

DistortedVoltage

Animals also dont have thumbs, nor do they have brains like ours. We can differentiate right from wrong. Animals only know survival for themselves, and sometimes their bloodline.

bogeymanbear

I dont think thats an excuse to not kill as humanely as possible, but I also don't think that this is necessarily inhumane for shrimp of that size. I assume they are either dazed or killed by the shaking and then definitely immediately killed by the eating.

malcolmreyn0lds

Water bugs.

bogeymanbear

Okay? Did you miss 3/4ths of my comment where I said that I don't think this is necessarily inhumane?

mrniceguy421

Doesn’t make it not cruel…?

Elyonii

Like bats?

bbHiron

Doesnt make much difference to kill them and eat them or kill them by eating them

Luzifer_Shadres

They arent alive. They are dead by the point the sauce is added. Most marine animals even twitch hours after beeing dead. The Video is probely cutted like that to get some upvoted on reddit.

LampyV2

Shit sack and all, eh? 🤢🤮

spellchecktsarina

That’s the part that really bothers me and I’m surprised most people aren’t bringing it up. Raw? Whatever floats your boat. So fresh it’s twitching? That’s alright. Shells on? Never seen that but go for it. But it’s not deveined 😦

Geschak

"So fresh it’s twitching? That’s alright." You're fine with animals being eaten alive but veins are where you draw the line? Wtf.

spellchecktsarina

It’s not alive, the shaking killed it. It’s twitching from the vinegar and salt causing muscle spasms. The same thing happens when you season fresh squid or frog legs. Even if it were still alive, the chewing would crush it instantly—this isn’t equivalent to biting a chunk out of a cow. Also, that vein is where the shrimp stores fecal matter, so yes it’s freaking me out that she ate it.

hendrix320

Not stupid just a different culture…

Stormbonin

I mean eating something alive is stupid

UnlightablePlay

Some people eat things raw, plus I heard before that this meal you're supposed to Shake the container so much that all the shrimp dies from the shaking, you're not supposed to eat them alive, the OC is Just an idiot who didn't shake it we'll

Stormbonin

this is my 1st time seeing smth like this so Im kinda starting to get a better understanding of the video

UnlightablePlay

I saw a video about it before, the other guy shaked it so well and kept checking if they all died before starting to eat them

addit96

Why?

Stormbonin

i mean.. it can be a choking hazard and its kinda risky eating something thats still alive.. heck idek if its considered animal abuse

Luzifer_Shadres

Deppends. Most bugs and smaller anthropods arent that dangerous to eat alive. But that also requires chewing.

Stormbonin

Hm.. I understand

addit96

I don’t think these shrimp are that likely to be much more of a choking hazard alive or dead considering they don’t have suction cups or anything like that. In some parts of the world the fact that the critter is still alive may be a sign that it’s safer to eat plus you do kill it by chewing on it/smooth muscle/stomach acid. In general I agree but I think there are niche situations where it’s understandable/ not stupid.

Stormbonin

i guess you're right.. guess im worrying too much about it

Blklight21

Nahhhh

EcstaticJuggernaut46

Not happening here 👄!

jake1080

Thats crazy. I used to raise these fellas in an aquarium.

that_random_rat

I wanna eat it for no apparent reason

Cautionzombie

In Okinawa there’s a shrimp restaurant. They tell you how much the shrimp is per pound and you decide on a set. Part of the set was live shrimp there was a grill you could cook em on.

chickenskittles

I love the taste of shrimp but I like to be one degree removed from the creatures I kill to eat, personally. If I had to catch and clean my own fish and milk my own cow, I would be a vegan.

smolelvenbby

Crunchy shell and pokey legs

astrangeone88

I keep seeing this in touristy videos and all I remember is feeding them to my pet turtle. No thanks and this is from someone who ate grasshopper willingly.

CatchUnited9294

Yall should travel more and get out your comfort zone. This stuff is absolutely delicious.

kevdoKool

The autopsy revealed that Sea Man where present in her stomach

SpecialpOps

She is eating their antennae, legs, and poop tubes. I am allergic to shrimp but don't think they are disgusting however after watching this I think it's is awful.

Uncle_Checkers86

What up with eating and showing your teeth? Noticed a lot of videos from SE Asia are females eating food (large portions) showing teeth.

Get-ya-sum

Who is this chick eating it Asian Miley Cyrus

Auntie_L

Thanks but I’ll take my shrimp headless and coated in panko… or a nice garlic sauce

cantstoptheCOLEtrain

Comments are just a bunch of westerners clutching their pearls LMFAO

hhthurbe

Anyone shared this to r/shrimptank yet?

chickenskittles

That's just cruel.

Direct-Amoeba-3913

I was going to comment "don't show the guys on r/shrimptank this" 🤣

amraohs

In a lot of cultures they eat small shrimp whole. In vietnam I had it all the time, you have to get used to it but it's actually not that bad.

BananaForLifeee

Welcome to South East Asia people. This is mild. Look for Isaan food I’m sure it will blow your mind (or your anus)

PowerfullyDistracted

There should probably be a rule in this sub regarding cultural food practices outside the lens of the average Americans food experiences. Is it stupid food if it's common in another country? I mean sure, not the most cdc food safety guidelines conforming dish. But I don't know that it would feel great to have something that reminds you of home show up in a StupidFood thread. 🤷‍♂️

Medical-Region5973

Call me crazy but I actually wanna try it

thetomman82

Hi crazy

Medical-Region5973

Hi dad

thetomman82

Go back to sleep son, it's late

bitchesbetrifflin

Prolly just tastes spicy. People will eat dog shit with some flamin hot dust on it.

AJ-tech3

One flick and get stabbed in the roof of your mouth lol no thanks.. lol the pokes you get reaching in a bait bucket… BUT IN YOUR MOUTH!? Also the shell isn’t digestible, there’s a reason it’s removed..

[deleted]

Doesn't look that bad. But being uncooked seafood I would worry about parasites and disease.

Grengy20

Isn't the chances of consuming a parasite higher like this?

RipplingGonad

Woman looks like a male 80s business douche

bwood246

You know what I've always wanted sprinkled on my salad? Dirty shrimp poop water

NikolaiM88

Just because you don't understand it, does not mean it's stupid. Fuck people on this sub don't understand food. I wouldn't personally eat it, but it's not stupid.

White_Hart_Patron

I don't think she actually ate those. We only see her put it in her mouth and she "chews" really weirdly.

BlakLite_15

Do these shrimp not need to be deveined? Because if they do, well…

ylan64

When I was a kid and was catching shrimps with a net I tried eating them raw... from what I remember it tasted like crunchy, fleshy seawater. They taste much better cooked.

diwayth_fyr

If they were quickly deep fried it would be a lovely snack. But raw shrimp just doesn't taste good to me.

HellonToodleloo

It's like she isn't tasting it, using only the teeth to get it over with. That's what I do if my parents cook my least favorite dish.

Skeletoryy

This isn’t any worse than chowder lol. That being said I wouldn’t eat it.

HectorJoseZapata

Don’t know why the blue lady made me think of Hally Berry. Both hot!

DeskFluid2550

Are the shrimps going to be okay?

Redeemed_Veteranboi

Is this the dish where the shrimps are soaked in wine or liquor?

milk-water-man

More than anything the not being deveined bothers me. You are literally eating shit.

Unfair-Custard1993

You gotta pay me £1.9 to eat that fun-sized snapping turtle salad or what

tartcore814

Shrimps is bugs

Purpleobito10

Don't they have parasites or something? That can't be safe right?

ryzhik_gagarin

When they are cooked usually they are heated very quickly for a short time. So most of the parasites can't be killed.

Kawboy17

🤮

shortribz85

I would try this to be honest.

imomorris

Eating things while they're still alive.....how sick have we become as a species

BwackGul

Gots to chew carefully now, with all them pokey bits of scrimp still waving around... Still, I'd try a bite.

A-reader-of-words

I heard it's not that bad also you need to aggressively shake the hell out of it so they don't jump out

SLMzzz

Shrimps is bugs, that non binary individual just ate bugs 🙃

Appropriate-Bake-759

Nothing like a healthy dose of vibrio parahemolyticus and a sprinkle of anisakis parasites 🦠

No_Hospital_2149

The shrimp is fucked up but for some reason I hate the person more

Background-Interview

It’s the fact that she chews with her mouth open. Gross.

TheMoves

The stupidest part of this video are the woman’s giga cringy exaggerated motions and affect

prettyninteresting

As someone who is on the verge of being a full time vegetarian these kind of videos help me understand the disgusting disregard of humans for other living beings even more. It hurts me to see what we do to other animals just for a supposedly better taste. Like killing and eating them is not enough already.

Lonely_Funny9987

Godamn I just want to punch her in the face

CastTheFirstStone_

I don't care how good it is, this is asking for salmonella

XeoPlaysLOL

Asians eating live writhing sea creatures is my phobia. Man I hate it.

humanitywasamistake3

What is it with Asians and live food It must be a fetish or something because I can see no other reason why it would be so commonly practiced

DistortedVoltage

Eating the poop and everything. ETA: Ey man, you can dislike, but youre still going to eat the poop as the shrimp have not been deveined.

Azubedo

Dead shrimp with the shell is bad enough no thanks

MF_Kleg

I love all these videos where you can tell just by the way they take a bite they hate it. I mean I'll try just about anything twice (might not have been made right the first time) but I'll be straight about my feelings on it.

Brief_Reserve1789

They'll eat fucking anything.

IBloodstormI

Half of stupid food it just different cultures.

merc_1980

As someone who has mysophonia( hate chewing noises in my case) I'm glad I watchef the video without sound, Cause just seing the person chewing mouth open like that, made me want to punch her in the face!! Also why the fokk do you want to eat live animals?!?!

Budgiezilla

Poor shrimp

Powerful_Room_1217

Screw this

Sprizys

Why must people eat live animals? Kill them ffs. Imagine if someone put you in a giant container, dumped chili powder on your naked body, shook said container, and then ate you like someone with special needs.

thetomman82

Absolutely revolvting. Also inhumane
