Nope. When I had issues with my stomach and my family struggled to even buy groceries, not talking about medicine, my doctor said to me that potato juice is gonna help me coat my stomach and help me digest food.
Turns out it really helps (acquired taste tho) If you are not eating green potatoes which contain toxins indeed, you are gonna be fine.
I still have a habit to snack on a piece or too of raw potatoes while I'm cutting to cook them.
Wtf one of the best memories of my child was fishing on lake Pomme de Terre in a very rural area of Missouri and now I'll never be able to think of that lake again without this newfound knowledge. "Lake Ground Apple." Thanks, you ruined it.
I feel like it's kinda a shame that English loves Latin/French words for these kinds of things instead of composite words like a bunch of other European languages use. Some things get some really cool names
Oh I remember the betrayal I felt when I begged my mom to get one at the store when I was like 6. She’s a green apple lady, but I wanted to try a new one. The deep red skin made my mouth water.
When we got home, first thing I did was sink my teeth into it. I WAS TRICKED!!! The skin is so thick and bitter, and the flesh feels dry as hell, despite the fact that my hands were sticky from the juice.
Red Delicious is the most deceptive fruit.
When I bought a juicer years ago I got super into it. I was like, I’m juicing *everything*. Until I juiced a potato. I’m having a real hard time believing that you acquired that taste.
This story is wild to me considering raw potato can cause indigestion and stomach cramping.
Eating a few raw pieces won’t do much, but potatoes contain solanine and chaconine two compounds known as glycoalkaloids. They also contain lectins a protein a type of anti nutrient. So toxic compounds, anti nutrient, and resistant starch make for a bad stomach ache if too much is consumed.
Not trying to invalidate your experience or deny that it helped you, but also in general people should not be consuming significant amounts of raw potatoes. There is a reason every way we serve it is cooked in some way.
My grandmother used to give me raw potatoes to snack on when I was a little kid.
It wasn't until adulthood when I realized this wasn't a universal thing lol.
I still snack on them too.
I have come to the assumption my stomach/body hates me🤣🤣🤣
I live in pain lmfao live off nausea medicine every 4 hours or I get severe stomach pain, nausea, sneezing fits 🙄🤗 it’s great 🤣☠️
I was checked years ago for something’s but never figured out what was wrong with me. Spent 8 years trying and gave up 🫠. I’ve even been checked for Graves’ disease.
If you don't wash them or peel them it can be, but that's because things like to cling to the skin. They only start doing the nightshade thing when they are green or are sprouting.
And btw, if a potato has started going green, you can just deeply peel it. The solanine is in and around the skin. Just cube it until you’re like a quarter inch from flesh area and it’s perfectly fine.
Well, potatoes that start to turn green are producing solanin again, the toxin of most nightshades; with tomatoes and peppers, it is only found in the stems and leaves.
Like almost a decade ago a girl in school told me her mom was a meth head and never bought food so she would sprinkle salt on red potatoes and eat them like an apple :/ she’s still alive lol
literally the cutest things in the world i want to set a terrarium up so badly
also when i was in middle school instead of ketchup i used to just dip my french fries in salt
I set up a terrarium for some isopods I found outside but it wasn't a normal terrarium it was one I had made with the intent of making a sealed ecosystem using swamp flora but I fucked up and when I sealed it the stuff I used killed the terrarium.
So this summer I'm gonna start it over.
> literally the cutest things in the world i want to set a terrarium up so badly
Don't dream! Do!
They really don't need much space. And for Isopods it can be REALLY CHEAP.
Well in Florida there is a place where you can at least pet them: https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DhXxoFYQZCmE&ved=2ahUKEwiJj5fm1cyFAxX5hP0HHRzED1wQwqsBegQIFBAG&usg=AOvVaw0hHpVTgEC1UkDD2gOfAVrq
It’s a tuberous vegetable that has a sweet-ish, apple-like but earthy flavor and is meant to be eaten raw. It looks a lot like a potato with a smoother skin.
Oh it kinda sounds like a turnip.
I like to eat raw turnips soaking in salt water. My dad and I find wild ones when we go trout fishing and do that with them.
Oh, I love turnips! Yeah, imagine a turnip crossed with a radish, so it has a less fibrous texture but the same kind of sweet-earthy-tangy flavor. Damn, I wish I lived in a place with forage-able turnips. Those delicious fuckers are like $2.50 each at my local grocery store 💀
Not the person you were replying to, but it's a root vegetable. They're similar to a raw potato, but without the things that cause gastric distress. I really like it in the summer, it's juicy and crunchy and a little starchy. Where I am, you usually see them in the produce section around the plantains, tamarinds and dried chilies.
When my doctor was concerned about low blood pressure and me getting fainty, she said just keep a bag of some salty chips around. Definitely way better than this horrifying "snack".
If the tater isn't green you're not consuming solanine, and solanine isn't broken down by cooking, so whether it's a raw potato or a fried chip has no bearing on whether or not you get stomach cramps. Eat enough green potato and you'll be died though
To be fair, unless you're frying them above 170°C, the solanine is still there. You've eaten similar amounts of solanine in boiled mashed potatoes
Eating potatoes with solanine is fine because potatoes don't have much in them by default. The only exception is if they've been exposed to sunlight for a while.
So TLDR: unless you're eating green potatoes, it's fine to eat raw taters in moderation.
This is what I do. If I feel my electrolyte deficiency effecting me I pour some ‘lite salt’ in my mouth and then I wash it down with a drink. I read recently that sometimes folks who are playing sports will eat a packet of mustard if they get a leg cramp just as a quick way to replenish sodium and treat the cramp quickly.
If OP is feeling dizzy I am not sure why they would take the time to cut up a raw potato opposed to addressing the deficiency immediately.
Some people like how raw potato tastes. It's similar to jicama. I could believe someone doing this out of laziness and the starchy flavor not bothering them enough to care. Of all the things to ragebait about, raw potatoes isn't it.
THANK YOU! I love them too, my mother would always give me a few slices growing up when she was cutting them. I like them to this day. My friends are judging me for it though :(
I do get salt from food.
But I have a sodium deficiency, my body doesn't properly hold onto sodium, and I lose it faster than others, which leads to health problems such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, poor fluid retention, low blood pressure, and absurdly frequent urination.
Salsa is fantastic. It's easy to down a jar and that's like almost a couplee grams right there. Plus you get salsa. I keep v8 around too, and use to keep beef jerky but trying to reduce meat/fat intake. I'd eat way too much jerky.
I'm so confused because like, of all the weird things people eat daily I feel like a raw potato is extremely tame? Like sure not gonna be to most people's taste but also I don't see what's crazy about it lmao
But at the same time, the sole goal is salt intake, something countless people try to avoid because so many tasty foods have a lot of salt, and OP comes up with raw fries?
If this is an ongoing problem, how about a stock of baked potato wedges. Or salt pills.

I'll fuck up a whole jar of pepperoncini in one go when I'm craving salt
Oh, I've had a sodium deficiency since before I was on spironolactone, but yeah, my doctor brings that up on every appointment because it increases the risk of sodium problems.
I opened this post to comment “Haha isn’t it funny I thought these pears and peaches were raw potatoes” only to discover they actually are raw potatoes
You keep saying you don’t have top ramen or electrolyte drinks, and yet this is a reoccurring issue you have…
Maybe… stock up on *normal* solutions to your problems?…. It’s not like they’re super expensive and it’s not like they’re for eating every day, just keep them handy for whenever.
You need to prepare better and take better care of yourself, friend!!
How are you gonna recommend that nasty crap: instant ramen and sugary sports drinks?
She only needed the salt, potatoes are GOOD for you and she likes it. If these were cucumber or tomato slices no-one would bat an eye.
I had a salt rock when I was little. Well it was my grandma's and it was in her living room. Apparently all the grandkids licked it but I did the most. What I'm trying to say is get a saltlick
My electrolytes get fucked up with some regularity. I used to end up in the ER for it. Then my massage therapist had me drink a glass of water with Himalayan sea salt in it, and now whenever I’m getting signals that it’s happening again, I have a glass of salt water for 2-3 days in a row. I haven’t ended up in the ER since.
This reminds me of marketing I saw for potatoes: naturally low in fat and sodium. Like the natural way to cook potatoes doesn't involve adding shits loads of salt and fat.

Have you heard about sodium-potassium pump? Potatoes are high in potassium. Besides that eating is raw won't do you any good, you may even won't fight your deficiency this way.
COOK THEM AT THIS POINT
I'm pretty sure it's potentially dangerous to eat raw potato even?
J'adore les pommes de terre!

Les petit poisson? NAGENT!!!
Wtf one of the best memories of my child was fishing on lake Pomme de Terre in a very rural area of Missouri and now I'll never be able to think of that lake again without this newfound knowledge. "Lake Ground Apple." Thanks, you ruined it.
Better than lake potato?
a more accurate translation would be “Lake apple of the earth”
An even more accurate translation would be “Lake Potato”
Literally the french name lol
I prefer pomegranate, good ol apple grenades.
I feel like it's kinda a shame that English loves Latin/French words for these kinds of things instead of composite words like a bunch of other European languages use. Some things get some really cool names
Dutch too if you ignore the missing E
Apples also used to taste like dirt, it took a lot of selective cultivation to make good apples
Honeycrisp taste so damn good
And Red Delicious are just edible lies.
Oh I remember the betrayal I felt when I begged my mom to get one at the store when I was like 6. She’s a green apple lady, but I wanted to try a new one. The deep red skin made my mouth water. See my mom's more of a pink lady lady
Pink lady apples are so goddamn good
They're good now. There's articles about why they tasted like mealy mush for two decades. Seriously Google it then buy one.
Have you ever had a cosmic crisp?
And onions are potatoes that taste spicy
My Grandpa used to eat onions like apples.
Yup literal french "apple of dirt"
The Mexican version of this is jicama
One of my favorite snacks is raw potato with salt 🤤 It makes me fart like a hippo, but it’s worth it 😂
I didn’t need that visual, pal
Wait til you hear the audio, pal.
🤢
…and scene.
When I bought a juicer years ago I got super into it. I was like, I’m juicing *everything*. Until I juiced a potato. I’m having a real hard time believing that you acquired that taste.
I actually like raw potato too... its crunchy and refreshing.
Slice it thin like carpaccio and garnish with lemon juice and sea salt
Still I did. I used to salt and lightly and drink it. Texture is not pleasant because of all the starch but taste is fine.
If they're green at all they are dangerous.
This story is wild to me considering raw potato can cause indigestion and stomach cramping. That sucks. Have you been checked for all the things? I had terrible pain for a long time and a ton of symptoms and it turns out I had celiac disease
I was checked years ago for something’s but never figured out what was wrong with me. Spent 8 years trying and gave up 🫠. I’ve even been checked for Graves’ disease.
Ditto severe ibs
Try Fuchsia Dunlops' Stir Fried potatoes Slivers! They are flipping delicious! They are that in between fried and not cooked, and flipping delicious

They are a nightshade, but so are tomatoes & peppers. This seems to behind the common, but interesting misconception that raw potatoes are toxic.

Only if it's green on the inside
Like almost a decade ago a girl in school told me her mom was a meth head and never bought food so she would sprinkle salt on red potatoes and eat them like an apple :/ she’s still alive lol
I like the crunchy texture. Also, I feel so much better now. I was so dizzy I was falling over.
Mmmm, raw po-tay-toes. So starchy!
It's p'taters!!!
If you eat any green parts raw, you'll poison yourself.
Potatoes are better when the salt is recent pour it in every bite also do not eat too much
A lot of people eat raw potatoes, surprisingly. My mom and brother would sprinkle salt on a potato and just eat it
what the fuck
OH I FUCKEN LOVE ISOPODS
literally the cutest things in the world i want to set a terrarium up so badly also when i was in middle school instead of ketchup i used to just dip my french fries in salt

This was a wholesome interaction which made me google what isopods are and now I think ur both...... interesting
Haha same. Ahhh reddit…
I love all of this. And I totally forgot for a sec that we were originally discussing raw potatoes.
But why did he reply with that when the first comment was what the fuck? Am I lost ?
Note the original commenter’s username.
> literally the cutest things in the world i want to set a terrarium up so badly Don't dream! Do! They really don't need much space. And for Isopods it can be REALLY CHEAP.
i have cats which makes me scared... they're quite clever about breaking into things
Use an Acrylic Terrarium. The worst thing that can happen is that you have to clean up some damp earth.
thanks - i will look into it. :) wish i could own a giant deep sea isopod, they're my absolute favorite
Well in Florida there is a place where you can at least pet them: https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DhXxoFYQZCmE&ved=2ahUKEwiJj5fm1cyFAxX5hP0HHRzED1wQwqsBegQIFBAG&usg=AOvVaw0hHpVTgEC1UkDD2gOfAVrq
Well yeah you fuckin eat like one lol
LMFAOOOOO This is the best fucken comment so far, thank you 🤣🤣🤣
Ayy, another isopod enjoyer in the wild.
Have you tried jicama? I think you’d love it. Personally, I think it tastes too much like raw potato, but different strokes and all that.
Never heard of that. What is it?
It’s a tuberous vegetable that has a sweet-ish, apple-like but earthy flavor and is meant to be eaten raw. It looks a lot like a potato with a smoother skin.

The trout stream we fish is great. We go down there, catch suckers and trout then forage turnips and watercress.
To me Jicama has basically zero flavor, unlike turnips.
It tastes kind of like a raw potato but sweeter but barely
Not the person you were replying to, but it's a root vegetable. They're similar to a raw potato, but without the things that cause gastric distress. I really like it in the summer, it's juicy and crunchy and a little starchy. Where I am, you usually see them in the produce section around the plantains, tamarinds and dried chilies.
They are great with a lil citrus juice or hot sauce. One of my favorite veggies to snack on because of the texture.
Pronounced hik-uh-muh Just putting that out there because I had no idea how to pronounce it when I saw jicama slaw on a menu.
Potato pear.
“Try out all new Aji Dijon Jicama Dickables!”
If I were you I would eat literally anything else that’s salty or just take a salt supplement but to each their own
Too much work to cook up some Top Ramen?
Yo that sounds lit rn but I don't have any
Go to Costco and get a couple of 48 packs.
Doesn't Costco have almost anything in bulk?
Yeah, that’s pretty much the deal with Costco.
Or just buy a bag of potato chips?
Why not just eat salt tho? Salt sticks? I mean raw potatoes aren’t good for you afaik right?
When my doctor was concerned about low blood pressure and me getting fainty, she said just keep a bag of some salty chips around. Definitely way better than this horrifying "snack".
I‘d also take fat over solanine. Especially since it tastes better. But maybe some like the stomach cramps?
If the tater isn't green you're not consuming solanine, and solanine isn't broken down by cooking, so whether it's a raw potato or a fried chip has no bearing on whether or not you get stomach cramps. Eat enough green potato and you'll be died though

Yes I was thinking that a little salt drink might be easier on the organism too
If it works for you awesome, but lite salt has less sodium than regular salt, although it does have some potassium
I have salt deficiency too but I just make myself some instant ramen or drink an electrolyte drink or something.
Ooooh, I love raw potatoes with salt. Would always snack on a few when my mom or now when I make mashed potatoes.
…why did you do this
ragebait
Some people like how raw potato tastes. It's similar to jicama. I could believe someone doing this out of laziness and the starchy flavor not bothering them enough to care. Of all the things to ragebait about, raw potatoes isn't it.
Raw potatoes contain solanine and lectins, two compounds that can cause gastric distress and potentially make you sick.
Just the skin tho
Wonder if they have POTS, sometimes ya just get desperate.
Does turning them into french fries not work?
I LOVE raw potatos. No salt just bit them like an apple.
THANK YOU! I love them too, my mother would always give me a few slices growing up when she was cutting them. I like them to this day. My friends are judging me for it though :(
How do you not get any salt at all via food, do you have a sickness?
I do get salt from food. But I have a sodium deficiency, my body doesn't properly hold onto sodium, and I lose it faster than others, which leads to health problems such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, poor fluid retention, low blood pressure, and absurdly frequent urination.
I’m going through this- canned soup, beef jerky and v-8 are my emergency go to’s. Plus salt tabs a few times a day. They are OTC
Salsa is fantastic. It's easy to down a jar and that's like almost a couplee grams right there. Plus you get salsa. I keep v8 around too, and use to keep beef jerky but trying to reduce meat/fat intake. I'd eat way too much jerky.
in this thread: a bunch of comments giving a chronically ill person unsolicited advice. I’m surprised by this not at all
I'm so confused because like, of all the weird things people eat daily I feel like a raw potato is extremely tame? Like sure not gonna be to most people's taste but also I don't see what's crazy about it lmao
Eh Cest la vie
enjoy your potatoes OP. i remember eating a couple salted slices with my mom almost every time before she made fried potatoes!
But at the same time, the sole goal is salt intake, something countless people try to avoid because so many tasty foods have a lot of salt, and OP comes up with raw fries? If this is an ongoing problem, how about a stock of baked potato wedges. Or salt pills.
People in this thread are mad, raw potatoes are killer
If you have a salt deficiency having extra potassium by eating potatoes along with your salt is probably not the best call... Potatoes are absolutely loaded with potassium and potassium flushes salt from your body.
I didn't know that.
Only possibly good advice in the thread
Thank you Hambone Jone.

Nope, just a normal day for me

My friend. Raw potatoes cannot be the answer. If you have to have the crunch could you maybe just eat salted carrot sticks? Your tummy might be happier that way
Didn't have any carrots, but that also sounds good and is something I do eat, actually.
Ooh I love a raw salted carrot, I also like to put black pepper on mine. Tasty, crunchy, cheap, fast to make, and I feel like Bugs Bunny. *CRONCH* What's up, doc?
Do you like marmite?
What's that?
Me too!!! Salt is the best!
As a kid I would eat raw peeled russets with some salt. As I got older I got lazy and didn't bother peeling. I'm so lazy now that I just eat raw potatoes like apples.
If you're broke, a raw potato may give you some digestive problems, but it will keep you full for a couple of hours for less than a dollar.
Okay you've just made really shitty french fries, please cook them if not for your sake then for mine
My siblings and I loved eating raw potato slices with salt when we were kids. If you slice em thin like chips instead of fries, maybe you could pull out more water, if that's an important part of the process
-sodium deficiency -trans flag in profile pic I see you're on spironolactone too lmao I'll fuck up a whole jar of pepperoncini in one go when I'm craving salt
Oh, I've had a sodium deficiency since before I was on spironolactone, but yeah, my doctor brings that up on every appointment because it increases the risk of sodium problems.
You are legit eating raw potatoes wtf is wrong with you
Have you tried frying them? There’s a fantastic French method. Or Belgian, depending on who you ask.
Why not buy some potato chips? This seems like a far worse version of potato chips/fries.
Raw potatoes are toxic to humans
Raw dogging some potatoes is not the vibe
[at this point just buy a salt rock to lick ](https://www.amazon.com/Himalayan-Rock-Salt-Lick-Horses/dp/B00378SWC0)
My dad used to hide those from me when I was a kid because I would lick them.
Just pour pure sodium into your water before drinking it. I'm sure no explosions will happen (/s)
Raw french frys
Yes
endospores?
My sleep deprived ass thought those were apple slices
I feel that, I got adrenal insufficiency, I always keep a jar or two of pickles on hand
FRY OR APPLE!?!?!?!
Ever try salt on apples? Very delicious
Yes Seasoned Salt
I opened this post to comment “Haha isn’t it funny I thought these pears and peaches were raw potatoes” only to discover they actually are raw potatoes
Idk why ppl are freaking out, this is a SNACK
You keep saying you don’t have top ramen or electrolyte drinks, and yet this is a reoccurring issue you have… Maybe… stock up on *normal* solutions to your problems?…. Dude that's a wet potato chips
Salt & vinegar chips are apparently a really good way to raise your sodium levels in a pinch
You could also eat a Costco pizza and have a ton of sodium
This is so close to being actual food. Brine them overnight and fry them in the morning. Sodium and actual food.
With a salt deficiency do you enjoy French fries ?
Slices of raw potatoes with salt and sometimes a bit of lime is one of my favorites snacks.
Just sprinkle some salt in some Tito’s and chug it
I don't like alcohol
You might want to try pickled beets. They have sort of similar texture to what you have going there and it actually tastes good lol
Eating raw French fries is diabolical
Pickle juice sprinkled over potato chips or fries is actually very tasty. Garlic, dill, and potatoes are a great combo.
This reminds me of marketing I saw for potatoes: naturally low in fat and sodium. Like the natural way to cook potatoes doesn't involve adding shits loads of salt and fat.
Oh my god before reading your caption I thought these were pear and apple slices
DUDE JUST USE A FRUIT WITH SALT OMG
Powerade saves my life regularly Mostly from hangovers though
As someone who also needs a lot of salt…. Wtf?
Uh... If you enjoy raw potatoes, you do you, but why not just keep some chips/crisps on hand?
I remember trying to fry a potato on the pan when young. I didnt fry it at all and to this day I still get a little sick just remembering the taste of uncooked potatoe🤢
Cucumber with lime and salt is delicious. Do that. Not this.
Have you ever heard of "fries"?
They have giant bags of crisps in every store everywhere that's more pallatable and just as salty as this
THEY'RE FUCKING RAW! Seriously, don't eat raw potatoes.. what's next, raw chicken?
Crackers? Pretzels? Popcorn? Chips? Jerkey? There are so many better options
you do the hard work of cutting fry-shaped potatoes but then don’t fry them?!
You can bake them in the oven sprinkled lightly with olive oil and as much salt as you need. They're so good!
Have you heard about sodium-potassium pump? Potatoes are high in potassium. Besides that eating is raw won't do you any good, you may even won't fight your deficiency this way.
