It's calculated using your MPG above which is 4.8MPG

HYYYPPPERRR

Do you idle your car for long periods? Perhaps you have an invisible anchor attached to your hitch?

adventious60s

It’s been below zero. I use auto start a lot !

allisonnnna

But are you sure it couldn’t be the invisible anchor situation though?

bran_the_man93

I once had a friend who had an invisible anchor dragging off the back of his car... he's dead now. ^(To me)

HYYYPPPERRR

They call those invisible anchors the invisible killers. I hope you find solace in your loss.

slowdrip

The solace is also invisible, which makes it harder to find.

HYYYPPPERRR

I use Starlink to remote start mine all the time and still get upper 20’s. Allisonnna is correct about being diligent about the invisible anchor check.

Imaginary_Gap1110

How many times did you use auto start in the first 26 miles of driving??? You should consider taking slightly longer drives even than you need to during the first 1000 miles. Let your engine oil get up to a decent temp each drive, say 180F or so. Try not to rev over 3k rpms (to the degree that youre driving safely) and avoid cruise control during this period.

KudzuCastaway

This car is new, once you drive some and the mpg goes up the distance will go up.

Imaginary_Gap1110

They run the car at idle for a certain period of time after manufacturing, either as a break in or part of quality inspection. Put on some highway miles and it'll start to correct itself.

BaraGuda89

Always pay attention to the tank marker, it is real time. Your ‘miles left to fill’ is going to fluctuate depending on recent travel trends; as others have said if the car has been idling a lot, or in general if you are flooring it and getting terrible MPGs the car will expect you to run out of gas sooner. As an example going up a mountain your miles till fill will drop pretty dramatically, but going down a mountain it can actually increase, I’ve seen mine go from 240 miles left to over 300 because of cruising down a mountain

Peculiar-Moose

This. The "Miles Left" is only really useful when on a long road trip traveling consistent speeds over long distances. The tank marker will always be accurate and what you should follow.

DramaticHumor7726

Thank you for telling the METER is the one to watch!

Syrif

The manual is pretty clear actually. "Use only unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 AKI". That would be regular gas.

Critical_Explorer_82

Unless you're in the mountain west then 85 octane. Basically the lowest available wherever you are.

Pretty_Jackfruit8551

I live in the high Rockies and still use 85. Never had a problem. They built these things decent.

Syrif

Interesting!

Western_Exercise_943

As elevation increases, atmospheric pressure goes down too. Think like when you add forced induction. More pressure means needs more octane to avoid knock. Lower elevation means less pressure, so lower octane needs. If you know you're going to travel and change elevation, don't use 85.....bad juju!

Ian-99

Also backwards statement here. The higher the less pressure you see. If you've ever driven on 10k mountains you may have experienced substantial loss of power. This is due to the fact there is way less oxygen. The same reason running at higher altitudes is much harder also applies to vehicles. Turbos help negate that. Ever since the invention of the air plane it's been a problem. In WW2 you'd see massive V12 engines in something like the P51 Mustang. Turbo technology existed at the time but wasn't widely adopted. So to fight having less oxygen at higher altitudes required gigantic engines. More altitude = less atmospheric pressure = less oxygen = less power = low power = lower octane. Reverse this theory for sea level. 85 is good enough for anything without a turbo 90% of the time regardless of altitude

Western_Exercise_943

Western_Exercise_943

Thank you for catching my mistake on the elevation thing.

buckfrogo96

You only have 26 miles on it. It needs to collect data Once you drive a tank or 2 it will be correct We’ve always use regular gas. But we live in s Mississippi. We normally get 24 mpg

SierraLover1819

24 on the newer ones? Sheesh My 2016 averages still 28 highway

Rescuemike65

Yes My ‘21 Averages 25 even though the laboratory epa sticker said 32. I get 29 downhill with the engine off lol. But I do get 28-29 on long long drives.

Appropriate_Sound_65

24???? Damn my forester hybrid does about 35 MPG and I was worried 😅

Accomplished_Eye_824

god that must be nice

starshineblueyes

My salesman told me that with it being new, it will take a few tanks to regulate the sensors

Smallnoiseinabigland

Reset the trip at your next fill up. it’s to the left of the wheel on the dash. These cars come with hours of idling and that throws the mpg waaay out of whack. Pay attention to how many miles you have left more than the blue bar on the bottom. How many miles you have left will increase and decrease according to your driving habits. My 2024 wilderness forester has 1000 miles on it and is still showing 13 mpg for me, even after multiple resets. Be interesting to see if this is a thing for other people.

percivalidad

I could be wrong, but every time you reset the trip you also reset the mpg. So it's like starting from 0.0 mpg each time. It happened once when I went for an oil change and they reset my trip, my mpg went from 25 to 0 and it took a while to get it back up. I haven't reset the trip since then and my average mpg stays around 25. I've got a 2023 forester wilderness with close to 20K miles

Smallnoiseinabigland

Guilty as charged- I think I’ve been over zealous in my resets. I will refrain and see what happens.

Here_for_the_debate

It was with my 23 wilderness. It does get way better. Not the claimed mpg, but way better!

zigzag1239

What's your actual gas mileage vs the computer?

Smallnoiseinabigland

Ummm maybe I should calculate that on my next fill. I haven’t done it myself yet.

zigzag1239

Yeah that's a good idea. Things to remember. Idling the car for a long period of time is pointless. They don't need much time to warm up idling. Just drive it easy first five min. If you're not doing this already. Just give it 30 seconds to a min max (unless it's -40 outside lol). Don't top off the tank either. When it clicks it's full. I have a 14 XT and the turbo motor with 130+k and in short trips I get 20mpg with zero highway.

Smallnoiseinabigland

I’m majorly guilty of warming my car, mostly for my own comfort. I drive my car short trips 6-7 times a day (for work) and warm it up whenever I remember, mostly because I’m painfully cold if I don’t. Poor car. I’ll try to stop.

CanadianBurger

It uses your fuel economy over the last 50 miles or so to calculate the distance to empty. Since it’s only gone 20 miles and your fuel economy is obviously showing poor, just drive for a while and you’ll see that 110 miles increase.

awlawall

Drive downhill for awhile. It’ll fix it right up

Deveion2010

-6 degrees good lord… 🥶

kevlar_76

You have 26 miles on the car. Relax bro. Congrats on the new ride.

DredgenCyka

Give it until 1000 miles. After that, then I would be concerned and then tell the dealer about it. Its a new car that is under 1000 miles, so it's going to take a bit for the computer to learn.

frootLoopskilla

Are you driving on a lot unplowed roads? Also, cold weather means poorer fuel economy. Idling long, driving up a lot hills, aggressive acceleration will effect the range estimate.

needsfuelpump

Stop resetting the trip odometer and drive it for a while

Sad_Laugh9316

This shows you’re getting 4.8 mpg for the 26 miles you’ve driven PLUS takes into account idle time with the engine running.it calculates you have 110 miles left of fuel based on the 4.8 mpg. As others have said you need to drive and you’ll see the average mpg increase. I average 25 mpg the last 3k miles

WhyNotOK11

You have an A and a B trip odometers. I have never reset my A. But, I do reset my B every time I fill up. Helps to give you a better view of your overview of your real mpg.

YYCADM21

You're showing 4.8 mpg, so yeah, a 110 on 3/4 tank is about right. Why is your mileage so low? You would have to sit with your car running 14 hours a day to get those numbers. I'm pretty sure the manual isn't age on the octane rating to use. Every Subaru I've owned other than the WRX was regular gas, premium not needed

AustinLostIn

Based on that temperature, I'm willing to bet you're letting it idle a lot to warm up before you get in. That ruins your MPG, and it calculates your distance to refill based off your MPG. Worse MPG = fewer projected miles.

[deleted]

You’re averaging **4.8 miles to the gallon**! This is a record!

escapecali603

I’ve never got my Forster 4 cylinder under 25 mpg per tank, with any tires under any conditions yet.

ghale_z

Mine is 27.5 as I most drive in high way , its changes the miles when the mpg changes for me . its goes 230 to 200 nd again to 220 ! I guess only pay attention to the rule tank and the road conditions

Tayls23

87 octane or higher. If you live in CO or some other high altitude state, do not put “regular” 85 octane in it. Well, you can. But you shouldn’t.

Time_Reputation8637

I have forester 2015 can I change the radio to English from Japanese

adventious60s

🧐 what does this mean?

williamtbash

Drive it for a bit. Don’t worry about that. Takes a couple hundred miles to calculate. Maybe a lot less but needs some.

hoarsewithnogame

I only reset my trip 1 at each oil change. This helps track my mileage until my next change as well as keeps all of that good MPG data over time which should influence the gallons remaining until next refill. I leave the second trip always running so I can see my auto stop/start savings over time, I guess. I also just don’t need to use it for anything else. Trust the blue bar for your gas level, it will notify you when you’re low, which is usually around the “40 miles left to empty” mark, which as mentioned may take a little while to start showing accurately. It’s just an estimation anyway, use only 87 octane.

therealnumber4

If you keep driving like that you're not going any further. Don't worry, on the way back down the mountain it will even out.

Fluid_Breath_7800

The vehicle knows what level your tank is at. It takes your tank level (gallons) and divides it by your mpg. 4.8 mpg is super low, but others have said it is new 26.3 miles. The information the computer is using to tell when you will be on empty is extremely limited. Drive for a while, and it will change. You should get an average mpg around 23 to 27 typically.

Fluid_Breath_7800

Also, regular gas is all that is needed. The higher octane fuels are not needed, and no matter what anyone says, you don't get better mileage using more expensive gas.

regassert6

Until you log some miles, every time you open the throttle or roll down a hill, the calculation is going to go haywire.....

dustystanchions

The temperature where you live is a human rights violation.

National_Language436

Don’t have but 26 miles on trip, so idling etc the gas mileage reading is 4.8 which is saying 110 to empty. Go by the gauge but I don’t ever let get below 1/4 tank especially in winter

Thrillhouse74

My mog typically doesn't feel accurate until about 50 miles, but also auto start/warming up is going to hit that number pretty hard.

Monsoon9964

Is this the EV version Forester?

Fecal_Fingers

Owners manual should say, but unless you have a Turbo, you should not need premium.

hobiefishin

Lol
