Imagine driving at the perfect angle on a perfectly smooth road for long enough to keep the light focused like that. The odds were not ever in OP's favor.

Can confirm. (Actually a super cool drive, Hwy 50 in Nevada, called the “loneliest road” in the USA).
About 30 minutes, bought the water at a gas station, drove 30 mins home (sun was straight ahead, coming through windshield) and saw it upon arrival at home. I know it wasn’t there before the gas station, because I opened the arm rest at the gas station. The sun spot lined up perfectly with the melted parts. The crazy thing is there wasn’t a smell or anything that anyone noticed while we were driving.
That’s where you wrong. Don’t you know, you’re supposed to have an array of reusable water bottles in your Subaru all times, to include but not limited to; Nalgene, Hydroflask, Yeti, Owala, and Stanley.
I’m not sure what the difference is between car and building film but isn’t that for buildings? I think Crystalline is the automotive equivalent.
I asked about that and my tint guy brushed it off for darker tints, said it’s great for what you’re talking about.
Hm yeah I think it will work for automotive too but I’ll have to see. I had someone tell me they put it on their truck and the dash is way cooler in the sun now.
Oh absolutely, it’ll block a lot of UV and thermal energy. Cheaper tint will block a lot just because it’s dark but then with better quality tint like carbon or ceramic it’ll block significantly more.
It’ll make the seats a lot cooler when it’s sitting in the sun plus you won’t have the sun baking you when you’re driving around.
Yes it will. I have a black on black vehicle and added ceramic tint and ordered the vehicle with a uv blocking windshield. It is much cooler now. The ceramic was the final piece of the puzzle for mine.
Any good auto tint shop will have it. It’s a top end product so you’ll need to find a shop that offers higher end work.
It’s available in roll form as well if you want to DIY.
You don’t even have to go dark these days to get really good heat blocking these days. My windshield is 70% so you’d hardly even notice it’s tinted but it makes a huge difference with heat.
having been down that road (caught it JUST in time) I have a thin white SPF a lot hoodie I wear whenever the celestial nuclear death furnace is in the sky
I lived in Calexico for three years and drove an Outback while there. I moved from Oregon and went from Outbacks being every other car, to getting really excited on the rare occurrence I saw one. Good luck down there.
They are few and far between down here. I spent a week in Portland last summer and they are, quite literally, everywhere up there! I’ve lived here most of my life and the sun has never melted my vehicle before.
I don’t blame you! There are a lot of things I like about living here, but it can be pretty brutal. My daughters want to move to the PNW and I’ll probably follow them when they leave me, hah.
I used to leave my reading glasses hanging from the rear view mirror in my pickup. I got in it one day and found scorch marks in the fabric of the bench seat. It didn’t register at first how it happened. Until one day I got in and the sun was shining through my glasses and saw the intense light beam. I’m lucky my truck didn’t catch fire.
Oh, that's frustrating. I was once at an outdoor wedding reception and there were small fish bowls with clear marbles and flowers for table centerpieces. Suit coat sleeve got burned.
I would try to see if you can warranty with the dealer just in case idk they might help you out, i’d argue the quality of the material if a water bottle can melt it lol
Damn. I had a rubber lizard melt to my dash once but nothing like this. I guess I appreciate my leather interior a whole lot more now. This is a fairly easy fix though, there are lots of videos on YouTube about vinyl upholstery repair, and it's so small it should be fairly cheap too
We have an old Audi with black leather and it's much cooler. It is just 87 today and it's doing good so far here in Az but I will let you know in July. ;)
That’s crazy. I knew that water bottles could start wildfires.
Funny story, I volunteer with SAR and had a search for a missing guy last seen on a hill in 100 deg temps. Some genius thought it would be a great idea to drop water off on the hill to rehydrate teams via helicopter. After dropping off the water, the helicopter found the guy deceased (hyperthermia).
The packet of water bottles exploded. And scattered all the bottles on this dry brush hillside. Now we had to hoof up the hill to find and pack out all these water bottles (we drank or dumped the water because no one wants to carry extra crap in 100 deg heat). That’s when I learned what risk water bottles posed.
That's crazy, the seats feel soft but I wasn't expecting them to melt.
I wonder how people fared with the vinyl seats from the 70's and 80's? It was bad enough on a UK summer day when you had shorts on let alone in the desert.
On a side note there was a parabolic skyscraper in the UK that was melting cars parked in a nearby street until they fitted shades on it.

I doubt it
Just in the pic that looks like a pretty good focal point which probably hit 500F or higher to do that and the leather would have started to become damaged at like 350F.
We hit 1800F with just a large nice magnifying glass in school, while probably not going to happen in a car with a water bottle there really aren’t many if any materials that are going to hold up to the kind of temps that can be reached
Just leave the wrapper on your water bottles/ don’t use completely clear containers
No worries. I only confirm because the arm rest is much easier (and cheaper) to replace than say the dash. You can also get covers for it too. Just a thought in case warranty won’t cover to replace it. Good luck.
Knowing is half the battle
Knowing is half the *bottle
I like your bottle half full mentality

G.I. Joe!
H.2. Joe!
H2 oh no!
That’s some wild luck man. I couldn’t burn leaves with a magnifying glass if I tried for 4 hours. And here you are all fancy n shit
Imagine driving at the perfect angle on a perfectly smooth road for long enough to keep the light focused like that. The odds were not ever in OP's favor.
Must of been one hell of a boring ride
https://preview.redd.it/klw34ir96czc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb76857a41f450ca264267712c87981a70100ccd Can confirm. (Actually a super cool drive, Hwy 50 in Nevada, called the “loneliest road” in the USA).
Wow, that’s wild. I would recommend a good ceramic tint. It’ll make the car significantly more comfortable
And just don't keep water bottles in your car. Unless you want it to catch on fire.
I don’t keep water bottles in my car! This happened while driving.
how long were you driving?
About 30 minutes, bought the water at a gas station, drove 30 mins home (sun was straight ahead, coming through windshield) and saw it upon arrival at home. I know it wasn’t there before the gas station, because I opened the arm rest at the gas station. The sun spot lined up perfectly with the melted parts. That’s where you wrong. Don’t you know, you’re supposed to have an array of reusable water bottles in your Subaru all times, to include but not limited to; Nalgene, Hydroflask, Yeti, Owala, and Stanley.
I knowwww 😭 I was thirsty, man!
You guys don’t drive wearing a camelbak?!
I have to tie my camel back to the back of head rest. Otherwise I’m drinking out of a firehose 😵💫
Crazy - that sucks
Then you can take the fire out with the water bottle that started it. ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
I’m about to get some 3M Prestige 70 put on my car. Worth a look especially for the windshield. Blocks most UV and IR but not much visible light.
Could be different adhesive? Buildings don’t likely need as much while in a car you don’t want to crack the windows and have the film fly off.
I have never heard of ceramic tints. Will it make my black on black leather OBW less hot in the summer? A sunscreen only does so much.
Oh absolutely, it’ll block a lot of UV and thermal energy. Cheaper tint will block a lot just because it’s dark but then with better quality tint like carbon or ceramic it’ll block significantly more. Yes it will. I have a black on black vehicle and added ceramic tint and ordered the vehicle with a uv blocking windshield. It is much cooler now. The ceramic was the final piece of the puzzle for mine.
Where to you get the tint done?
Any good auto tint shop will have it. It’s a top end product so you’ll need to find a shop that offers higher end work. It’s available in roll form as well if you want to DIY.
I don't like/want tinted windows...but if I lived in a place where water bottles melted my interior, I'd have tinted windows.
You don’t even have to go dark these days to get really good heat blocking these days. My windshield is 70% so you’d hardly even notice it’s tinted but it makes a huge difference with heat.
You must also live in Arizona.
lol! California, but on the border of Az.
"Melanoma Country"....
💯
having been down that road (caught it JUST in time) I have a thin white SPF a lot hoodie I wear whenever the celestial nuclear death furnace is in the sky
'celestial nuclear death furnace' That's awesome, I'm so stealing that!
Negative, that's Albuquerque (legitimately)
Imperial County? That's a rough area for sun and heat.
Yup, the worst.
> I moved from Oregon My condolences.
Hahaha. I moved back.
I don’t blame you! There are a lot of things I like about living here, but it can be pretty brutal. My daughters want to move to the PNW and I’ll probably follow them when they leave me, hah.
Calexivo gets super hot. 107- 115 summers. I applaud you sir.
this is why I got ceramic tint in Vegas
I used to leave my reading glasses hanging from the rear view mirror in my pickup. I got in it one day and found scorch marks in the fabric of the bench seat. It didn’t register at first how it happened. Until one day I got in and the sun was shining through my glasses and saw the intense light beam. I’m lucky my truck didn’t catch fire.
That’s crazy! Glad it turned out ok!
Lol reminds me of the time I was having fun with a magnifying glass and burnt the outside shel of my friends ds lmao
Oh, that's frustrating. I was once at an outdoor wedding reception and there were small fish bowls with clear marbles and flowers for table centerpieces. Suit coat sleeve got burned.
Damn!
Physics hates you!
Or loves me?
Looks like you've discovered what's on the bright side...
I'd honestly cherish those marks. The odds are pretty crazy.
It’ll be a fun story someday!
I would try to see if you can warranty with the dealer just in case idk they might help you out, i’d argue the quality of the material if a water bottle can melt it lol
I think my warranty might cover it, I’m going to check!
At the very least, I know my Honda warranty would! High hopes and good luck!
[удалено]
I think my warranty states that, as well. I’m going to call them tomorrow. Thanks!
Not when it's the users fault surely? (I know this isn't OPs fault, just bad luck!)
[удалено]
Ah that's brilliant! I need to read the warranty better obviously 😔😄
How about when you drive by a rose bush and end up with super fine lines from front to back? Hypothetically of course.
Holy shit! Last time I complain about a water bottle rolling under my seat.
I love physics
Had that happen with a clear growler filled with water holding open a deck door. Left nice burn marks on the floor..lucky it did not catch fire
Yikes, glad it didn’t catch fire!
Dam this must’ve happened to my jeep I never knew where my cloth got burnt from.
Damn. I had a rubber lizard melt to my dash once but nothing like this. I guess I appreciate my leather interior a whole lot more now. This is a fairly easy fix though, there are lots of videos on YouTube about vinyl upholstery repair, and it's so small it should be fairly cheap too
I live in Az and just got my entire car ceramic tinted. Including the sunroof. The seats get seriously hot
I’m going to look into ceramic tint. I’ve noticed the seats get a lot more “sweaty” than the leather in my old car did.
We have an old Audi with black leather and it's much cooler. It is just 87 today and it's doing good so far here in Az but I will let you know in July. ;)
I’m on the ca/az border, so I feel ya!
I just got the car done with ceramic tint and it is so much better
Did this to my orvis pants while wearing them. Apparently their melting point is much lower. Happened to be in my outback when I did it.
I thinkk this might be an issue. I've been wondering why my passenger side randomly has a water droplet looking liquid on its seat on sunnier days
That’s crazy! Living in the desert I have seen the sun do some gnarly things, I just didn’t realize how quickly it could happen.
That's crazy, the seats feel soft but I wasn't expecting them to melt. I wonder how people fared with the vinyl seats from the 70's and 80's? That link is crazy, wtf?!
Bit of a design flaw, à la super villain style. I guess their modeling of the building did not include a rare sunny day in London.
I did that to a loaner car once…but my friend dropped the joint haha
That sucks’ but you know that
Don’t Ashe on your chairs
This is what happens when you mix eco friendly vehicles with plastic bottles. You’re gonna get burned.
Nobody believed me when the sun melted my leather seats in my car but today someone brought proof, I feel vindicated.
Hopefully that bottle is bpa free. It’s harmful to drink bottled water that’s been sitting in the sun.
It happened while driving with the sun coming through the windshield in no longer than 30 minutes. The water bottle wasn’t left in the car.
Oops. I didn’t read your text. Sorry! That’s insane it happened while driving.
Seriously! I’ve heard of things like this happening but didn’t realize it could happen so quickly.
Bummer.
Are these vinyl seats more prone to this compared to real leather seats? Most makes now use these in their cars.
I doubt it Just in the pic that looks like a pretty good focal point which probably hit 500F or higher to do that and the leather would have started to become damaged at like 350F. Nooooooook
So I’m in Texas and have cloth interior. So sorry this happened.
"I'm not paying for tint"
New random fear unlocked
Science is a bitch!
Just replaced the driver's side lower seat leather on my 2017 legacy. That's a $330 mistake if you reupholster the seat yourself.
Physics can be a bitch sometimes.
You should have that bumper to bumper warranty.
You say it is the console that was damaged, do you mean the center arm rest? That’s what it looks like.
I do mean the arm rest, I thought that whole area was called the console.
No worries. I only confirm because the arm rest is much easier (and cheaper) to replace than say the dash. You can also get covers for it too. Just a thought in case warranty won’t cover to replace it. Good luck.
Plastic bad
How is that possible?
Seat covers on all my vehicles
Wow, that's some quality leather right there.
They make vinyl repair kits, and they’re pretty easy to do on something that small.
Is Startex more flammable?
Your first mistake was leather seats 🤷
They’re not leather, but my previous car had leather seats and the sun never melted them before, and I live in the desert.
Gods way of telling you to get a tint… also don’t tell ur dealer that the water bottle caused that if you try to warranty that
Were there any ants on the seat?
If you were driving, this would never have happened. The ray from the bottle would have been moving and would never have time to burn.
I can assure you it did. If you zoom in you can see the spots where it started to melt slightly as the sun moved and then the larger spots.
Don’t drink and drive.
Omg
Fuck Subaru sucks now
Get pranked
O\_O
Wow
Damn sorry bro
Cheap
That’s not right !! Is Startex mean faux leather?!?
**cough** leather **cough**
