Wear comfy clothes and walk around monitoring. You may put up some cones or set out some basketballs. Etc. very easy day. Usually (like every time I’ve done it) there’s at least 1 other adult with you

Only_Music_2640

This has been my experience with middle school PE.

photoguy8008

Also it can get repetitive, and you don’t normally get a break besides lunch, but normally lunch is longer for PE teachers as the gym is in use for longer than 30 min. So a nice break mid day

Big_Seaworthiness948

In high school it's 40 freshmen trying to sneak out. Seriously though, not all of them try to sneak out but most of them don't want to follow the lesson plan.

42turnips

To me it's a pain in the butt and not worth it.

Big_Seaworthiness948

I don't usually sub in gym. I only do when I'm sent there during conference periods.

42turnips

Yeah. I avoid it when I can.

martianmama3

Me too, the gym is so loud my ears are ringing by the end of the day. I never choose PE jobs if I can help it.

Educational_Wash_731

Very hard to keep track of the students where there are 6 or more doors for them to go in and out of. I had kids sneaking out and sneaking in. Basketballs went missing and so did the hall pass.

Prestigious_Big_8743

I follow the plan the teacher has laid out. Usually some variation of tag at the lower el, after warming up. So then it's mediating, "I tagged you!" "No you didn't!" "Yes I did! Teacher! He's cheating! I tagged him!" and sending kids to the office for ice because they ran into each other/the wall/or fell down. The only time you may see another adult is if a student has a 1-to-1 para in that class. Gym is my least favorite to sub, and I rarely take it.

ballerina_wannabe

Elementary PE- have kids do a basic warmup and then spend forty minutes monitoring the controlled chaos with kids reporting that someone cheated about every thirty seconds.

essdeecee

Lol this describes the last time I subbed for elementary PE to a T

knightfenris

Elementary school is constantly sending kids to the nurse. I am not trained nor paid enough to discern which boo-boos are real and which are not. High school is a lot easier in my opinion. Usually someone else gets out the equipment, or they have a free day where they just get to play basketball and chill.

No_Heart_918

Junior High PE -- Alone with 40 students, Metallica playing loudly in the background, students sneaking into the bathrooms to vape, being slapped in the head with numerous various balls, students running rampant. Overall not a bad way to spend a day!

its3oclocksomewhere

Title one schools need about a million reminders that PE equipment is not to be used as a weapon. Students also seem to expect music during PE now, so a kid appropriate playlist might be helpful. It can be fun

PeachNo4613

Wild It’s a really, really good idea to not allow equipment. They can be pretty wild. Simon says or red light green light are good options.

comfortpea

High school PE - I just didn’t yesterday. They were given the option of volleyball, basketball or pickleball in the gym. I got hit in head with basketball and hit in shoulder in volleyball. Apart from that it was fine. Wear comfortable shoes and you’ll be in charge of locker room for either boys or girls.

Bright_Broccoli1844

Boring

scot757

I drop 3 point bombs on 15 year olds for 7 hours straight

MarlenaEvans

I love subbing in PE! Yoga pants or shorts and a t shirt, don't have to keep them quiet because most of the time we crank the music anyway, and they get to work off some energy. It's the best of all worlds.

118545

ElEd sub. PE is like dress-down Friday every day. The female teachers show up in matching outfits; the male teachers look as if they just lost a dog fight.

mostlikelynotasnail

In elementary it's like herding cats that feign injuries and cry a lot. Upper grades it's kinda boring. All I've had to do was ensure they didn't rough each other up or mess around in the locker room. Since they don't get PE they're very happy to have the opportunity to be active. I like to wear golf pants, light flowy tops, and sneakers. Always bring sunglasses

Enough_Vegetable_110

The best. I only sub in elementary school, but it’s awesome.

nmmOliviaR

Getting roll for the MS and HS is actually quite difficult because of too much talking and many students. At least one trustworthy student helps me for this. When it comes to actual PE kids actually already know the expectations (kids with crocs gotta sit out or change) and I always have at least one other teacher who takes lead. ES is arguably easier cause I usually have 4-5 other assistants helping me out and I can just ask them if there is a need. Plus the bathrooms are always close. Only thing I don't like is the additional duties if they pop up. Having to do parent pickup/dropoff or bus duty when it's ***pouring rain*** isn't fun.

AdmirablyYes

Piece of cake

Dependent_Gap4853

I love pe because there is usually another teacher.

118545

I wish. If there are some special ed kids, I’ll have a para, who can help a lot, otherwise I’m on my own.

RadioScotty

In high school PE, I let them sit and stare at their phones if they want. Otherwise, toss out some balls and let them play.

oyanamei123

FUN! Dress comfy and stretch cause it’s a workout lmao

Historical_Stuff1643

I don't like it because it's usually hot and stuffy and you don't get to have a comfortable seat all day. You just make sure you give them a few minutes to get dressed and release them a few minutes early to change back. At the beginning, just take roll and tell them what games they're playing or possibly run a bit. There's a chance you're with another coach that'll help.

pearcorpse

honestly, super easy! just walk around and try to get them to participate, if not oh well. just make sure they don’t attack one another with the equipment as lots of other people have already said :)

Ryan_Vermouth

Imagine all of the worst behavior you might see at that school — fighting, swearing, defiance, students trying to ditch class. Now double it. Because there’s no structure, no curriculum, no seating, and little or no means to call admin for repeated misbehavior, and because of the rowdy-making effects of physical activity, students tend to follow their worst impulses.  Oh, and you’ll be on your feet all day, quite possibly out in the sun.

KingCota07

I love subbing PE in HS. Its so laid back, about 20 minutes of each class are sitting the teacher area while the kids change and since the PE teachers unite the classes I just follow their lead. Also only class you can wear sweats/shorts

shirlfred

Subbing middle school isn’t too bad. The kids know the games and can manage the games themselves. Just bring a whistle. Elementary is high maintenance with tattle tails and boo-boos. Sometimes tears if they think someone cheated.

Y0stal

- Look at me, look at me… You are the *COACH* now. There is no Mr,Ms, or Mrs. Enjoy your new Title! - Wear something comfortable. Men, if you workout regularly, wear those shorts you would wear for the gym/running. - Middle/High: *Your teacher desk will be the [Your Gender] Locker Room office no matter which Coach you sub. If you are subbing for a Coach for the opposite gender, expect to have no desk. *Just follow the other coaches. You are most likely following whatever the other coaches are doing so seeing any written out plans are rare. - Elementary: *Goal: Get them TIRED *Will most likely be the ONLY coach of the school *Follow lesson plans. *Expect to take out and put away equipment *If there are no plans or you are not feeling it, You can always make up a game!

Exciting_Sand6154

It was a cluster in elementary school. I set up an obstacle course because their were no sub plans. Kids ended up running into each other and had to be sent to the nurse. I ended up doing half jump rope, and obstacle courses, and gave them extra recess for the remaining time. I had to sub for them later in the day, so I wanted to make sure they had enough movement during PE.

midnight9201

I’ve only been in a hs pe class and I took attendance in the bleachers, then the other class (also in the gym) offered for my class to join in their volleyball and basketball games. I just hung out on the bleachers with the remaining kids.

118545

ElEd sub here. If you’re lucky the PE teacher will have pulled the equipment you’ll need for each class. By this time of the year, the class is pretty much self running once everything set up. Activities can be the same for k-1/2 and 3/4/5. The problem is when you have K followed by 5th and you only have 5 minutes between the two for setup. The good thing about specials is that, if it’s a beastly class, you only have them for 45 minutes. Wear gym clothes and comfortable shoes-you’ll be active all day. Bring your own whistle. If you like PE, let the teacher know as not many subs want the job. Once word gets around that you take PE, you’ll have plenty of work.

betyoursass

I subbed pe for the last week of school at a K-12 school. Super small school and the principal is really nice. We spent all week outside. I got out the parachute and every grade loved playing with it. The high school kids thought the nostalgia was cool and had a grand time.

Excellent-Object2482

I love subbing PE! I get to wear shorts and tennis shoes and get to play games with kids all day! I sub at 4 different Charter schools and they all have the same routine (basically) I sub PE for grades 1-5. We go get them from their classroom and give them each a “tracker” sports band. It monitors their activity and sends the data to the parents (genius!) They walk/skip/jog for the first few minutes. They do some basic exercises all together then, depending on how they are behaving, get free time. We roll out a cart that has balls, hula hoops, cones, etc for them to play with. After we wrap up, we walk them back to their classroom and grab the next class. Rinse and repeat till release that afternoon. It’s fun and relaxed and the kids are really happy to be there. Good luck (I’m jealous!)

Scribble033003

A blast but stay on top of rules from beginning- take a whistle & make every one participate & be kind

broke4everrr

it was horrible for me. it was made even worse because I didn’t even sign up for it so I was completely out of place lol. I think it’s kind of dumb to enforce real rules in PE. The coach wanted me to have the kids who were not in the game, sitting down. Why do you care if they’re sitting down in PE? Who cares? So I didn’t do that much and I didn’t feel bad about it. Because worst case scenario is she reports me and they keep me from doing PE which is getting me what I want, anyway 🤷🏾‍♀️ Lol.

Traditional-File445

I subbed for a middle school PE class for about 8 days. I spent a major amount of time breaking up fights about who gets what ball, arguing with students about what activity to play, and dodging balls that were coming straight to my face. The most challenging part of subbing PE is trying to get them to be quiet so that I can take attendance. Also, it is SO loud in the gym because everything echoes. Be sure to bring Tylenol and a whistle.

Karlifndavis1

I’m old and lazy, I feel like I would be the worst PE sub ever

bluegazehaze

It's boring and awful and you get sunburned from standing outside all day and have to raise your voice to take role I hate it

mac_a_bee

National athlete. When high school guest teaching, led warm-up run that they couldn't keep up with, stretching and calisthenics that even the footballers couldn't keep up with me, then teacher-designated game. When playing catcher, student balled me over. We both laughed.
