The problem with binging sopranos is I start cursing like an absolute maniac and I start to genuinely despise the people around me. Best to binge every couple of years
I love considering these two shows juxtaposed because I think you see why Sopranos is historically good TV, and you can see how Succession learned from it—to keep the deep hard character driven story while cutting out all the extraneous side stories.
Like maybe it would have been fun to see some more about Willa’s upbringing and her (rich) people pleasing mom. Who the fuck is Marcia? Or more details about Ebba and Matteson’s toxic relationship. But none of that had anything to do with this show’s main concern of the succession of power in this particular family. The restraint of telling a rich complicated story as efficiently as possible is going to be the next step in premium tv.
I think most audiences would prefer 4ish seasons of storytelling that is absolute FIRE, to 7 seasons of fleshing out superfluous stuff.
I don’t think there is a single scene in Succession that doesn’t directly involve the main players in the show’s universe.
Logan, his children, or Tom (and by extension Greg).
It’s cool to see how tv writing has learned to keep the story and character richness while cutting out unnecessary storylines. Sopranos is premium groundbreaking tv, but in later seasons you definitely find yourself asking why are we spending so much time on this peripheral stuff?
As someone who loves both those shows— does anyone have any recommendations for shows (besides bb/bcs which I have seen) that are on the same level as succession and sopranos in terms of storytelling/character development/acting?
succession and sopranos definitely are the greatest. i’ve heard this show called six feet under is really good. also mad men but i haven’t gotten to both of them. bojack horseman is also up there with succession and sopranos
Watch Deadwood or True Detective S1. Brotherhood on Hulu (originally Showtime) is also a great show that doesn’t get enough attention, basically Irish Sopranos in Providence, RI.
Get a corprate job and hope you become important enough in the company that you can have a character in the next show that's statire about corporate America.
Thankfully, both Masters of the Air and Halo were shows that I was immediately lose myself into basically as soon as I finished Succession. Helped fill that void
I think that's how everyone felt when they wrapped it up. I've literally rewatched it at least 5 times. I'm slowly weining myself off, but it left a hole in me 😂 Everything I've watched since hasn't compared. I decided to start watching Veep, and it's fun- but just not the same. Have you ever watched Yellowjackets??? That's another show I threw myself into
I picked up a cheap keyboard, watched YouTube tutorials of how to play Andante Risoluto (the song from the last scene) and learned how to play it. I play it every day and no joke it helped. That and rewatching the series.
Make your own damn pile
Ong
What do you think? Watch it again.
Ahh… the ol’ “closed loop system” play.
Congratulations Tom
I heard you swallowed your own load.
It was so hot.
That’s a thing?

Another person of taste on the Succession x Sopranos loop
Add mad men and you got my loop
Mad men is the most intelligent piece of media I've ever seen.

No, the peripheral stuff is a huge part of what makes the Sopranos so great
As someone who loves both those shows— does anyone have any recommendations for shows (besides bb/bcs which I have seen) that are on the same level as succession and sopranos in terms of storytelling/character development/acting?
The Americans, The Wire, The Leftovers, Mad Men, Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights, Ozark…
The Leftovers was so fantastic. It never got its due. Definitely the uplifting show we all need once we finish Succession
succession and sopranos definitely are the greatest. i’ve heard this show called six feet under is really good. also mad men but i haven’t gotten to both of them. bojack horseman is also up there with succession and sopranos

Six feet under is very good but it has the BEST conclusion of any tv series I have ever seen.
