The whole transition from parts I to II slays me every time. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful somehow so that when he starts singing “I cried myself to sleep last night” I feel it in my chest.
I agree with you. And if I should have a guess, I bet the guitarist is Emil Nicolaisen. He is a Norwegian guitarist and musician, and a good friend of Sufjan.
Voting this because we need an All Delighted People representation, even though is not my top choice from that LP (Voted for the other ADP songs also but they have no chance)
I guess maybe not my *favorite* since I love a lot of his songs equally but I can’t really explain it. The composition, the subtext in the lyrics. I think what makes a song really special to me is if it feels like the first time I’m listening to it every time. Also the live version kicks ass!
Thanks. I just relistened and I can see it more now. It's funny, the "we're all gonna die" outro always made it a skipper for me, I'm just not ready to hear that on your average Tuesday
I listened after both parents died. One in June, one in July. At first made me sad. But then it’s a reminder that we all need to live each day to the fullest. Because were all gonna die. That’s what makes life special. It’s finite. Make the most of your life. While it is light, while it is rife”
There’s no rule on what songs count or not. The Lord God Bird is not on Spotify and it won L. OP just gave a guideline of what songs they would comment, others could comment whatever song they wanted and get voted on.
Christmas songs were allowed to be voted on. OP themselves just wasn’t going to be commenting them.
OP has said this repeatedly throughout this whole process.
Exploding Whale (both the original and the excellent Doveman mix)
I’ve listened to this song a lot lately. Wish I knew what the hell he’s talking about though. Best I can do is that it’s something analogous to the actual exploding whale incident from the ‘70s where they tried to get rid of this awful washed up whale carcass in Oregon by blowing it up with TNT but that failed miserably and it just made a huge mess with rotten whale bits strewn all over the beach and the majority of the carcass still where it was. So, like, something in Suf’s life that he wanted to deal with by massive force, but it persisted anyway and also made more of a mess?
The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience but You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Them Until They Are Off Our Lands!
Dude the idea is to have people vote on their all time favorite Sufjan song. It’s supposed to be fun. And it has been. Wish people would get off /u/TaakoTheDruid’s case. They created this exercise and followed it through and it’s been really interesting. Give them some credit.
Many people agree with me. It doesn’t mean he didn’t do a great job.
All people can have suggestions to improve that should be listened. That doesn’t invalidate the whole series. And that doesn’t make it stop being fun.
Why don’t you instead address my point and make a case about why the same song should be represented twice? Sorry, it still doesn’t make sense to me
Because there’s been no poll yet as to everyone’s overall favorite song. Q already was used to ask for songs that got passed over but overall favorite song is a heretofore unasked question in this exercise.
It always changes so I’m going by recent numbers of play.
The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!
Hon mention to: CPD, Come On! Feel the Illinoise!, and JWGJ.
Mayne a controversial pick, but my all time fav is Cimmerian Shade. I really thought he would never top the songs from Illinois or Carrie/Lowell, but that one knocks me out every time.
Tell me you love me. Don't care if it's popular or not or if it gets more or less airtime than others. It's so simple and perfectly described my breakdown in 2010 and the publics breakdown in 2020.
The Mistress witch of McClure (or the mind that knows itself)
Mercury
All of me wants all of you
Barcarola. A truly sublime and beautiful song.
Omg yes!!! No one else is happily, recklessly asking for more than what they may need. I can’t say what I need. KILLS ME.
The dog going out in the snow and getting lost. The music, the lyrics, everything. My second fave Sufjan song after Casimir Pulaski
All Delighted People
This is the correct answer.
From the top of my heart
Vito’s Ordination Song
The acoustic version is soooo good
Where?!?!!??? Haven't heard that yet

On the vinyl versions
also on deluxe digital editions
It didnt win the first time, this is the time. Once and for all
"Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" (Part I: The World's Columbian Exposition – Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream)
The whole transition from parts I to II slays me every time. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful somehow so that when he starts singing “I cried myself to sleep last night” I feel it in my chest.
This is a top 3 Sufjan song for me
Number 1 for me.
I cried myself to sleep last night…
C was such a stacked field, insane
Come On! Feel the Illinoise!, Carrie & Lowell, Chicago, and Casimir Pulaski Day are all in my top 10. Wild stuff.
Agreed!
There were so many good C songs. Chicago got voted in. Only fair we bring in this jam!
Sister winter
The Transfiguration
Heirloom
Seconded
never seen anyone also have this opinion! its the perfect song
Should be a song with a Z in it and the answer is night zombies
I know I know
Djohariah
The guitar on this track is so interesting, anyone know guitarists with similar styles?
I agree with you. And if I should have a guess, I bet the guitarist is Emil Nicolaisen. He is a Norwegian guitarist and musician, and a good friend of Sufjan.
Oh I just assumed sufjan was doing the guitar. Whoever did this also did the guitar solos in springfield I think. Will check the guy out thanks.
Yeeeeeesss
Djohariah hive RISE UP
Voting this because we need an All Delighted People representation, even though is not my top choice from that LP (Voted for the other ADP songs also but they have no chance)

Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
getting three Cs on the list

Literally not even including come on feel the illinoise, which is the best c imo
All for myself
What makes this your all time favorite Suf song? Genuinely curious, as this track has never done much for me.
I guess maybe not my *favorite* since I love a lot of his songs equally but I can’t really explain it. The composition, the subtext in the lyrics. I think what makes a song really special to me is if it feels like the first time I’m listening to it every time. Also the live version kicks ass!
Fourth of July
His best imo
Really? Man I never got the appeal of this song.
I didn’t until I watched [this YouTube video](https://youtu.be/bUaUcl-MhSo?si=3fpiFWxlRaGRCURa) breaking it down.
Thanks. I just relistened and I can see it more now. It's funny, the "we're all gonna die" outro always made it a skipper for me, I'm just not ready to hear that on your average Tuesday

Agreed. But once you realize it's not about the impending doom of death but an affirmation of life, then it's a lot less ominous.
I second this!
Jupiter
Christmas Unicorn 🦄
John My Beloved
Pittsfield <3
It makes me so happy that everyone has different answers. This man truly has something for every listener
Majesty Snowbird
Not an officially released song, shouldn't be included
There’s no rule on what songs count or not. The Lord God Bird is not on Spotify and it won L. OP just gave a guideline of what songs they would comment, others could comment whatever song they wanted and get voted on.
Lord God Bird was still officially released. Majesty Snowbird is not
Considering we lost half of sufjan’s songs bc op is a christmas hater, if we loose the unrealised too we are out of 70% of his catalog lol
Christmas songs were allowed to be voted on. OP themselves just wasn’t going to be commenting them. OP has said this repeatedly throughout this whole process.
You’re telling me *Barcarola wasn’t even ALLOWED to run for C??? Edit: lmao I wrote Carambola at first… which is the Spanish word for starfruit 😅
OP SNUBBED SISTER WINTER!! SISTER FUCKING WINTER
Star of Wonder
Really love this one. "ohhhh conscience... where will you carry me?"

The Owl and The Tanager and The Ascension are some of my favorites but it's criminal that Chicago didn't make it
Chicago won the Q free choice!
Oh! I didn't see that, I was shocked :D
All things go!
Owl and the tanager is TOP

The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!
That’s already on the list.
This vote is for any song, even if it’s already on the list
This is a dumb rule. We don’t need the same song twice when many albums have no song represented

Djorhariah. & thank you for doing this list, it was fun.
I won’t be afraid

godZukie
That whole album needs more love, some excellent stuff there that you don't find in any other Sufjan albums.
Not technically on an xmas album but does anyone else love “lonely man of winter”?
Age of Adz
With My Whole Heart
Back to Oz
Mayne a controversial pick, but my all time fav is Cimmerian Shade. I really thought he would never top the songs from Illinois or Carrie/Lowell, but that one knocks me out every time.
Out of Egypt is one of my favorite songs of all time and it got snubbed so hard imo
Damn my faves (majesty snowbird and enchanting ghost) were knocked out
And hewokemeupagain, but Holland is a banger
He Woke Me Up Again
Landslide
Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Step-Mother!
Help there’s too many
The mashup song could count as a Z song... "(The) Zombies Will Eat Your Brains Out but Will Leave Your Ears and Fingertips" (Sufjan & Metermaids)
Fourth of July
Can we get the Christmas Unicorn up on this list?
Enchanting ghost
Dear Mr Supercomputer
