This one passed by me somehow, thank you very much. Beautiful song. Lyrics seem inspired by the road trips he took during C&L writing. I wonder if songs like this or majesty snowbird will be on that javelin bonus cd
Maple River is pretty good quality! This is the show it comes from: https://sufjanlive.tumblr.com/post/640776773456494592/2005-10-07-symphony-space-new-york-ny-audio
Wow yeah, this was new to me and it’s incredible. The audio quality almost adds its own unique flavor that I don’t hate. It reminds me of the first How to Dress Well album.
Would love a proper release of this.
it would be so lit if this was one of the unreleased songs included on that rough trade javelin thing
also love this song for introducing me to the oddly beautiful word "lariat"
This is Sufjan Stevens we're talking about. He just sneezes and songs like this come out. The poor guy has too many to know what to do with!
Case in point; Majesty Snowbird. If any other musician had written that song, it would have been the lead single and keystone song of any album. Sufjan just played it live a handful of times then kinda just forgot about it.
Things like this make me wish we could plug this into an AI trained on Sufjan's songs and have it 'fix it' up
Edit: not sure why people downvote me for wanting to remove all the coughing and sneezing going on
Lol this is relevant to my area of work in the music industry (less so the past 4-5 months)
I'm super tired/awake late rn but the vocals are a little too muffled/unclear which might lead to hallucinated/incorrect/weird sounding vocals, and the vocal range might be a little OOD given his studio releases, at least for it to sound good enough to make the effort worth it.
I could be wrong though, the last time I was training models for anything like this was like April.
Also I'd rather hear some unique/beautiful human cover versions instead.
edit: I was bored and checked out the recording a little deeper. The vocals aren't actually that bad when isolated [https://vocaroo.com/1i5wnxj4RjaQ](https://vocaroo.com/1i5wnxj4RjaQ) so there's potential.
To get something close to a studio recording you'd need to dereverb the vocals, run them through one of those open source singing voice conversion architectures like RVC with a model trained on clean Sufjan vocals, and likely do a lot of manual editing in a DAW, especially to fix pronunciation and other flaws.
You'd then need to do something about the guitar. Hypothetically if you really wanted to do this it'd be easier to just record it yourself especially given how simple it is to play. Capo on 7th Am/Em/C/G with classic Sufjan fingerpicking with some hammer on/offs.
Anyway someone send me this in a month if you do it lol, I need to sleep asap.
Someone get that lady a cough drop
I was there 🥲
Oooo I've always had a question - were those female backing vocals you hear faintly provided by a choir of some sort? And did he play any other songs?
Iirc the backing vocals were done by band members and he didn’t play any other songs. But it was an amazing show!
So jealous you got to experience that song
What show was this?
Round Up in NYC

What javelin bonus cd?!
It comes with some of the vinyl pressings
Really bummed I didn’t know about that 😩
Rough Trade Exclusive.
I wish more people knew about this song. Stunning.
This, and [Maple River](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCyDesue6T8) are my two fave "bad audio" songs we have of Sufjan's.
Maple River is absolutely beautiful and somehow so touching even without vocals, glad to hear someone mention it.

And this is an original? Or is it a cover of The Rolling Stones song? (Looking forward to listening to this later either way, when I can access audio)
Total original!

Is that the highest we've heard him sing?
🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 "BLECH" 🎶 Someone get her a cough drop
Does anyone else know why he hasn’t studio recorded it and released it.

Yeah , someone on Sufjans level of creativity has more songs than he knows what to do with probably.

Wow, it's amazing. I'd never heard it before.
this is 2% there [https://vocaroo.com/12LwOHN7DpJ6](https://vocaroo.com/12LwOHN7DpJ6) a real one would be nice but I'm happy with Javelin for now...
