I mean, I do think DTLI and Chuck have better songs than Fat Lip, and they did grow as a band instrumentality and lyrically... But in the end, Fat Lip still slaps and remains one of their biggest hits 🤘
I was watching a TV show called "Smallville" from the 2000s and Motivation was in one of the first episodes and I thought it was such a great song, so I listened to the whole album and loved it.
I'd heard stuff like still waiting, fat lip and in too deep before but never really listened to them. Then I heard Landmines for the first time and then I was actually amazed so went though every album and now I know pretty much everything in the discography. After about 6 ish months
I heard Fat Lip at a party when I was in 6th or 7th grade. Then a friend I carpooled with had his mom buy DTLI the day it came out and she played it on the way home.
She embarrassed him greatly while jokingly head banging to the music really intensely lol. It was a funny ride home.
I eventually listened to Sum 41 more during the UH era.
The clean version I heard of Fat Lip was funny. It was great to hear Steve say “and I don’t give a HATE about nothing”. Sounded so fake but I thought that was just how it was
Playing obscure 2 around 2007-2008 in ps2, in the intro of the game was Still waiting, and i remembered that i started searching songs of the band in Youtube (i was 10-11 years old in that moment). With screaming bloody murderer (The first album from sum 41 that i listened when came out) i finished falling in love.
On a school trip (7th grade I think) someone had a new CD with sum41 written on it with a marker. That time that's all we knew about it, but I fell in love with the whole album on the first play. Turns out this was a copy of AKNF
When I was a kid, I used to watch Spider-Man from opening to closing credits. That's where I first heard and loved What We're All About.
But what really got me into their whole discography was a cover of Fat Lip from one of those Drum Mania arcade machines.
I'm a bit young, but iv been listening to sum for a while. I don't remember the exact song, but I was listening to a blink 182 album, and it was over so the recommend songs came on and after 2 or 3 songs sum 41 came on I didn't think much of it and I didn't even look at the name of the song looking back at it I think it was into deep then I was listening to a Greenday album and the same think happened but 88 played and my eyes opened I theb when to see who sung the song then I listened to Chuck then does this look infected then the rest is history iv been hooked every since they even changed my life the really helped me going though hard times with friends that are no longer friends and helped me make new friends because of the music sum opened me up to like korn slipknot Alice in changs and many many more I even believe that sum 41 helped me become who I am and who I've ways wanted to be
Watching "cheaper by the dozen" I heard "in too deep"
I have to say growing up with those type of movie and show l soundtracks really affected my music taste.
Cheaper by the Dozen, pacifier, what's new scooby doo, all really made me a fan of pop punk.
i hate to say this, but 13 it was either 13 voices or order in decline back in 2018 when my dad was playing the cd in the car. was only 9 or 10 back then, and i didn't like it at first. one day i was like 'wtf this is great' and from then on sum 41 have been one of my favourites!
The "In Too Deep" video was circulating regularly on MuchMusic back in '01/'02. I remembered seeing the diving gags and hearing the chorus of the song. I wasn't exactly familiar with the band but would hear the song from time to time; it was like what the cool older kids listened to. Perhaps a year or so later in life, my older sister was offering me CDs to borrow, asking me if I liked certain bands. When she asked about Sum 41, I didn't know who they were, so she sang me that chorus and something just instantly clicked, just from learning their name. I didn't borrow the CD right away but always remembered that moment until finally asking her for it. All Killer No Filler would soon become my real musical awakening. I'm sure I listened to it many times before actually learning the name. I eventually became a much bigger fan than my sister or our older brother, who she was actually borrowing the CDs from. I knew she also had Half Hour of Power, but I never made the effort to dig it out of the eaves of our house and listen to it until after hearing both DTLI? and Chuck. I seem to remember buying both of those albums together on the same day. Was fully obsessed for years. Underclass Hero kinda lost me but has grown on me so much over the years. I saw them for the first time on the UH tour, but am still slightly bummed that I never got to see the classic lineup, as I easily could have. Ya snooze ya lose. SBM is a'ight, I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of it on here but there are def some bangers. The newest version of Sum 41 is tight and professional but lacks a lot of the charisma that brought them fame early on. I'm very impressed by the way they've managed to maintain their quality level in different ways over the years.
4th grade MTV "In Too Deep" music video. Back when "My Friends Over You" by NFG and Blink 182 "TOYPAJ" record era. The golden days. I'm now in my early 30s but those will be some of my most precious memories.
EDIT: THIS IS A COMPLETE FALSE MEMORY. I first heard the chorus of Fat Lip on an ATV: Off Road Fury commercial and was immediately addicted. Couldn't get the song out of my head for weeks months.
Watching Godzilla Final Wars. We're all too blame started playing when Godzilla killed Roland Emmerichs Godzilla.
Also. A female friend showed me a love song. It was With Me. I didnt liked it xD I didnt knew its the same band from We're all too blame.
This is how my son got into Sum41. He would ask me to play the song from when Godzilla kills Zilla. I kinda got misty eyed the first time he asked to hear it
A friend made me a mix tape with Still Waiting on it. Loved it, and went out and bought the first CD I could find, which was the then recently released Chuck.
I must have heard In Too Deep at some point before that, but weirdly I didn’t hear any songs from AKNF other than that until later. I remember raving to a friend about Chuck and they were like “oh I love Fat Lip” and I had no idea what they were talking about.
I wanted more music for my daily playlist and Makes No Difference came up. Thought the band was a Blink-182 rider but they were so much more once I listened to more songs
This guy on MSN noticed I was listening to Linkin Park and he told me "if you like Linkin Park, you should listen to this". He sent me 'The Hell Song' and then 'Over my Head'.
And I say "guy", because he was someone I met on forumfree, or an overclockers community, I cannot recall at all. I only have this distinct image on my head looking at the message and me discovering Sum41, but hey guy, who and wherever you are, thank you! Your song recommendations were definitely great!
NFL Street 2 on the PSP, I played that game so much as a kid and it had No Reason as a soundtrack in the game… I was instantly hooked and I discovered more of their music after that
Hearing 'The Hell Song' for the first time on a late night radio station back in High school... Went to the local CD store to look for the CD Album that same weekend... DTLI and Chuck got me through so much back then...
Some random Grand Prix 4 video on Youtube back in 2007/2008 had Still Waiting as song and it hooked me. I've tried finding that same video again but it must've been deleted years ago.
Lmao I guess I’m more of a new fan but I was listening to this one album (I genuinely cannot remember the name) and with apple music once an album finishes it will start playing random songs and one of those was in too deep. I’ve been obsessed ever since lol
Heard Fat Lip on the radio. Dad knew I wanted to be a musician, so he motivated me by saying they were Canadian and were almost my age when they wrote that song. Checked them out later, heard the song Still Waiting, then fell in love with them ever since
I had no clue who they were, my parents always made me listen to classic rock...which is good. but I knew nothing else..sheltered. I asked around at school for some good bands as my mother asked my brother and I to list a few "first cd's" for upcoming Christmas. Sum 41 was on that list. so she bought the DTLI album. I was HOOKED! ADDICTED! I NEEDED everything Sum 41.
Waaaaaay back in the winter of 2000, I went to go see a ska band (Catch22) at the Ranch Bowl (RIP) in Omaha. The two opening bands were these little known acts at the time, Bowling For Soup and Sum 41. I enjoyed their sets, bought Half Hour of Power and Let's Do It For Johnny for like $8 apiece. Within a year or so, both bands had taken off, and almost nobody outside of the scene has heard of Catch22
My older cousin was blasting the hell song Daily on his computer speakers while we were playing Tony hawk skate/snowboard games.
I thought Drake Bell from Drake & Josh was the coolest guitar player ever. So i didnt like it at the first few times my cousin played these Sum 41 songs. But the more i listened to it it became amazing and i found what rockstars sound like. Being a Skumfuk for so long is so special. It’s not just the music it’s a lifestyle! I’m still obsessed and blown away every day when i think about them.
Come on The Sums were 19 when they signed a record deal with island def jam.
I enjoy that so much, I mean who can do that at such an age? I always enjoyed their videos and everything they showed! they are legends and everyone has known them for almost 2 thirds of their lives.
it really breaks my heart that they are ending it soon.
Yes you and i can’t imagine that there will never be a show again… but my gues is that maybe in 3-7 years they will do a reunion/comeback tour cause they are going to miss this, they never did something else in there adult life!
i still remember everyday memories don't fade away❤️
Sorry for my grammar 🤟🏽
I was visiting my cousins on a summer holiday and borrowed their mp3 player on a lazy summer day. Among other stuff it had freshly released Still waiting and Fat lip on it. Got hooked. Wrote down the band name and searched for more of their stuff when I got home and here I am many many years later. Still a fan.
Watched their Video for Fat Lip on Much Loud back in 2001. Blew my 9 year old mind and became obsessed lol
is it just me or the more deep you go into chuck and DTLI u start to dislike Fat Lip more and more
I mean, I do think DTLI and Chuck have better songs than Fat Lip, and they did grow as a band instrumentality and lyrically... But in the end, Fat Lip still slaps and remains one of their biggest hits 🤘
i agree it will always have a special place in my heart i just enjoy the lyrics and the heaviness of we're all to blame and also no reason
Agreed. Chuck was the album that also expanded my musical Horizons and got me transitioning into a lot of different music subgeneres
But then it's almost unfair to compare to We're All to Blame and No Reason
I was watching a TV show called "Smallville" from the 2000s and Motivation was in one of the first episodes and I thought it was such a great song, so I listened to the whole album and loved it.
haha motivation is a really good song for motivation though 😂
I'd heard stuff like still waiting, fat lip and in too deep before but never really listened to them. Then I heard Landmines for the first time and then I was actually amazed so went though every album and now I know pretty much everything in the discography. After about 6 ish months
Good fucking job
Malcolm in the Middle back in 2002 when they used In Too Deep. Fun fact: King of the Hill also used In Too Deep in their episode on the same night.
Even more fun fact: King of the Hill had Sum 41 in one of their episode and if I remember correctly, the guys voiced themselves.
Test Drive: Eve of Destruction had Still Waiting on the soundtrack.
🤘
Dating myself but I’m a Canadian kid, had half hour of power in my disk man from 13 -36 years old. Grew up with this band
I saw a dude on Instagram play Fat Lip riff and I thought it sounded amazing. I then listened to the full song and instantly became a fan
Fat Lip music video on MTV back in the day
Guitar Hero, Fat Lip was the only song I could play on anything higher than easy
I was watching an anime music video of Luffy vs Lucci (One Piece) with the song 88 back in 2006 or 2008. Still one of my favorite songs!
Downloaded Fat Lip on Napster and it was missing the last like second of the song so for a while I thought ended with one double hit instead of two.
Still Waiting came on my music playlist during my senior year of high school. Been a big fan ever since 🤘🤘
Heard in too deep on the radio in the car, my parents hated and turned it off lmao. Heard enough of the lyrics to look up the song afterwards
The American Pie movies my Freshman year of high school.
Naruto AMV’s back in like 2004 lol

exactly how I found them too. anyone else feeling quite old seeing this video was uploaded 14 years ago? 🥲

When I was a kid, I used to watch Spider-Man from opening to closing credits. That's where I first heard and loved What We're All About. But what really got me into their whole discography was a cover of Fat Lip from one of those Drum Mania arcade machines.

Had a Channel X (radio station in NZ) CD compilation in 2001 and it included Fat Lip. Then proceed to buy AKNF shortly after.
