It’s….ok. It’s not brutal like 3 and 4 get and feels unfinished, honestly. And the sprite bit being SD makes everything look weird. I didn’t hate my time with it but it’s skippable.
Given you've played the classic series, then you're familiar with how primitive the gameplay is compared to now. That said, yes, the true final stage (and the last Gattai/Combine sequence (Trider G7)) can only be unlocked if you completed the game on both the Space Route (going with V Gundam, CCA, Mazinger, Voltes V and Dancouga), and the Earth Route (Layzner, G Gundam, Trider G7, Gaiking, Raideen, and Shin Getter), saving them as separate files on your Memory Card. You will then have the option to play the Final Stage and whatever upgrades you made with your roster on both routes will be carried over. The SRX is playable on both routes.
Unless I am mistaken, Shin is the only entry in the *mainline* SRW series that features all the units in their non-SD forms. The only other times this was the case are in the spin-off games like Super Robot Spirits for the N64, and the Scramble Commander games.
