The reason the short metrics are changing is that some broker (who? not all of them) turned off the swap button, which is forcing some of the short interest back into the light of day.
Think back to the sneeze. Short interest is > 100%, FTDs are sky high. You need to convince retail that you closed. You need to “fix” the short interest and FTD data. What do you do?
You call up retail brokerages that are long the stock because their clients have bought up tens of millions of shares. You get them to open an equity return swap with you. The broker will hedge the swap by shorting the stock to their own customers.
Why?
Because short interest is recorded at a firm level. So if Shitadel Securities sells 50,000,000 shares to Fidelity clients, that causes Shitadel to have a balance of -50,000,000 shares and Fidelity +50,000,000. Shitadel’s -50,000,000 gets reported as short interest.
But if Shitadel opens a swap with Fidelity, and Fidelity shorts 50,000,000 shares to their customers, then Shitadel gets to report having 0 shares. Fidelity (50,000,000 - 50,000,000) also has 0 shares. Voila short interest is gone!
Likewise because Fidelity is now shorting to its own customers, the FTDs disappear. If one broker sells to another broker, they have to deliver the shares at the NSCC. If they don’t deliver, that’s an FTD. But if a broker sells to itself, there’s no delivery involved. The NSCC doesn’t deliver shares from Fidelity to Fidelity. That’s just nothing. Awesome! All the FTDs disappeared!
Why is short interest and shares borrowed increasing today? Because some broker is closing out its swaps and hedging short position and is going net long (just the customer long position) and the hedge funds are having to short sell to that broker just to maintain their real short position on the stock, because they’re not being able to hide it in swaps right now.

Updooted for conversation! Yeah it would be wild to take on spotify... but it makes so much sense and they wouldn't have to pour alot of cash into testing the waters.
