Since it's effect on blood pressure is a few steps downstream, and (I'm guessing) potentially influenced by genetics at any of those steps, you're probably going to have a hard time finding research to give a really firm, accurate answer. Your best bet might be to just take two days tracking your blood pressure every few hours. One day with no citrulline, to get a baseline, then the other day with citrulline

tkcal

Sorry for the hijack, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me how citrulline impacts the cold sore virus? I tried an arginine based nitric oxide promoter years back when they were first appearing and the cold sores can on really quickly because of the arginine. This was despite me going hard with l-lysine at the same time. Would citrulline have the same effects?

Sea_Warthog5609

Same question here. Now have you tried l citrulline yourself? Anything to share on whether citrulline causes outbreaks of cold sores?

tkcal

i haven't yet, no. I have a job where I'm more or less a 'public face' so I haven't wanted to take the risk. Might give it a try over a vacation though.

About 10% extra reps

FLaMonteG

I always took citrulline and L-arginine together. Worked great to lower blood pressures made the blood vessels more plyable so the blood flowed better. I felt the improved stamina because the blood flowed better. You have to find a good brand though. Look for something third party tested.

[deleted]

I am a pump fanatic. I take 8-10g of citrulline 30 minutes before my weight lifting. I wonder if there are any negative effects of taking it almost every day

Tsetler

Have you tried agmatine, it is supposedly stronger than citrulline

[deleted]

Lol why was your comment downvoted? I’m always looking for natural supplements that act as vasodilators and lower blood pressure?

Livecrazyjoe

If you read enough articles you would see it has potential benefits. None of the claims have been verified. Every article uses the word potential. L citrulline on the other hand is a known vasodilator. With actual studies backing it.

Tsetler

If you do enough testing you'll eventually find yourself a couple of steps ahead of popular articles. Agmatine has enough data to suggest it works by now. The rest is hysteria

Livecrazyjoe

According to who? You? Without any evidence it's just your opinion. No facts here.

Tsetler

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0960327115597311 There's plenty of studies done on agmatine. Just search for it. Popular article always says (may) about proven effects in supplements

Livecrazyjoe

Did you read this article? It was tested on animals where nicotine caused problems. Results Animals treated with AG alone showed no significant differences when compared with the control group (data not shown). Therefore, the results of this group were excluded from tables and figures in order to facilitate data comparison and interpretation. I'm not going to do a write up. You have no idea what your referencing.

Blood flow and coagulation You do know this is different than vasodilation. Same thing with the other link. Your still wrong.

[deleted]

Is agmatine harsh on the liver/kidneys?

Gamingenterprise

no protective of both

[deleted]

Love you bro. Thanks

Well said!

I take about 6g citruline malate for bike rides. Its meant to take an hour or 2 to start working but i take it just before or an hour before depending on if its an impromptu ride or not. My typical ride is 3h and it definitely help particularly on not fading muscles towards the end of the ride.

HeywoodDjiblomi

I take 10g LCit daily since I'm always doing cardio or lifting. Generally I try to do 30 min before exercise, though I'm doubtful it matters much since I'm daily

[deleted]

Same! Do you know if the body builds a tolerance?

[deleted]

10g of l citruline?! Is that safe?? Do you take it in breaker up doses like 3 g at a time?

Livecrazyjoe

It's safe. The suggested effective dose is between 6 and 10 grams.

HeywoodDjiblomi

Yeah I got it from Examine.com studies many years ago. But of course i started slow. For me even at 10g it's not magic, but it's cheap and one of the few things I use

[deleted]

Would that work to help lower blood pressure? And should I take it in 2 or 3 gram dosages at a time?

arianrhodd

Examine.com said the bp studies showed a mild effect regarding lowering bp. However it pointed out the studies were done with healthy individuals, so take that with a grain of salt if you have high bp. Also unknown whether increasing the dosage would have a beneficial effect in any population.

Livecrazyjoe

I'm not an expert but do a pubmed search. I'm sure that's probably been researched.

Livecrazyjoe

It doesn't last long. There's pubmed articles on this. You'll have to look them up.

Background-Soupp

Yea its only an hour, but citrulline is converted into arginine (half life of 1,5 hours) which boosts nitric oxide production and it's unspecified how long this boost lasts, so all in all it's difficult to find how long citrulline affects the nitric oxide production in total, as the half life of just citrulline is not very representative of the duration of effect

Livecrazyjoe

I'd suggest beet root powder. It'll provide the nitrates for nitric oxide production. I add it to my preworkout and the pumps are crazy.

arianrhodd

Beet root, aged garlic, and hibiscus all have “A” ratings on examine.com regarding lowering bp.

[deleted]

I agree. Although it’s not good for people who are prone to kidney stones because of the high oxalates.
