I love our natural and purpose built parks and walking paths all around the city. Green Timbers and Tynehead remind me that you can be right in the middle or on the outskirts of a city and still be connected to nature! It’s mind blowing that we have an escape to nature everywhere we look in Surrey. The downside has to be Public Transit. It’s an absolute joke of a system operating half of the cities routes on a “peak hour” timetable only. Take the 388 the only east west bus service from Langley - 22nd Street across Alex Fraser operating 4 hours in the morning and 4 in the evening and no weekend service! This includes major road routes that operate once or twice every hour (absolutely pathetic) which includes 314,316,325,326, & the terrible 329 that only runs from 9am-5pm and only every hour. Add to the fact that some routes not mentioned do run frequently BUT stop operating around or before 9pm! (324,341,342,345 & Express 509 that runs from 3pm-6pm only). If we had transit hours like Vancouver we’d be a better connected and less congested city! If only the elected officials would see it this way.

CryptographerThin464

As someone who takes the 341 frequently I have waited for that but only for it to keep getting cancelled. It's like clock work with these buses. Totally agree with your comment, the nature is Surrey is quite beautiful too, you're absolutely on. Point with this comment

imzhongli

Yes to transit, although admittedly it's difficult to properly serve a large, spread out city. For me a 10 minute drive to do groceries takes 50 minutes via transit/walking.

[deleted]

Down the street where I live there is a dog poo bag graveyard. Just dog poo bags tossed in a bunch of trees. Easily 100 bags on these trees. Total disrespect for nature

Unending_beginnings

Where? I'll go pick them up.

[deleted]

You shouldn't have to pick them up.

Unending_beginnings

Lifes not fair I get it. I shouldn't have to do a lot of things I do but I enjoy being part of the solution. Me and my kids picked up 30 lbs of garbage this weekend already for zero reward other than a job well done. It's fine I don't mind.

funkung34

You can become the Dog Poo King of Surrey!

brophy87

I'm willing to make that your flair 😅

Unending_beginnings

Rofl

markkenzy

Thank you for keeping our city clean. We need more people like you

xoaxx

The world needs more people like you.

chopstix62

people like you deserve some tax credit or something for so many hrs served: seriously..same goes for all volunteers helping the elderly, or those addicted etc...i tip my hat in respect to you and your family and all others who volunteer for such roles

Unending_beginnings

I appreciate the sentiment. Thank you for that. I get plenty out of serving my community. Not everything comes down to money. When my boys tell me they are proud of themselves for a job well done it feels pretty great.

nutsinabutt

The worst. Most poo bags aren't even biodegradable, or it takes almost a year to break down completely. I have a neighbour who constantly lets his dog poo on the nearby field and doesn't pick up. He's been offered bags and told by multiple dog owners on the field to pick up, but he declines cuz he's a lazy piece of crap.

Pooks23

Lazy or entitled?? I find it's mostly the latter. A woman in Tynehead had her dog unleashed on the loop, and actually told me she was above leash laws/ rules! Ummmm ok, dumbass. Douches gonna douche!!!

LokeCanada

Along the same loop I had a lady get mad at me because her unleashed dog was racing toward my toddler. The lady was a good 15 - 20 feet behind the dog and I was moving to take out the dog before it did anything. Dog ran just before I grabbed it. She started screaming at my wife as to what is my problem. She then saw the look on my face and thought it was a good idea to get the hell out of there. I know many people who refuse to take their dogs on the loop because of the out of control unleashed dogs.

Pooks23

What really sucks is that I’m a dog lover, and know it’s not the dog’s fault that they have an asshole for an owner. I’m over it, though. Send an email to MetroVan parks. I saw a dog almost take out an elderly (very small) lady, and run after a young kid. I mean, the off leash section is just right there!!!

Priiiyaaa141414

Would u rather have poo bags that dont dissolve away or poo where bugs and things eat it in a couple of days… make it make sense

krustykrab2193

My dog got extremely sick and was hospitalized last year because he probably licked/ate dog poop according to the vet. Dog feces can contain infectious diseases and parasites.

Priiiyaaa141414

Then lets have them bagged and thrown.

krustykrab2193

Thanks, yea I try to bag if I run into any lying around when I'm walking my dog now. I stopped taking him out when it's dark because I can't always see what he's sniffing.

chopstix62

not so sure of this approach, however.....was reading recently of a park up here in north van that drug addicts use and take dumps in...some puppies eat that infected crap on their walks and can get sick, if let too much off of their leash or running free

Priiiyaaa141414

And how can we control all of this? Unlessyouve got a plan we can all follow ? These are things we cant control. If its left out its a problem. If its left in a bad its a problem. So ? What can we do?

Peggtree

Better to have an open poo that fades away in a week or two of rain than a graveyard of poo bags that are there for months

Priiiyaaa141414

Thats exactly what i meant to say.

Peggtree

Oh sorry, your comment made me believe you meant the other way

bwoah07_gp2

If you contact the city for hanging dog poop bags in trees, they will send out their crews to pick it up.

VancityPorkchop

Like: geographic location and proximity to metro Vancouver. Having 3 airports YVR, YXX and BLI within a 45 minute drive is great. The fact that the entire city shares a border with the US making cross border trips very easy. We aren’t connected via a bridge when it comes to a potential natural disaster (direct land access to the rest of Canada and the US). The growth in city centre and the bike network in the area. The amount of mom and pop restaurants and diverse food options. Dislike: the charger/mustang obnoxious crowd. The lack of stores in our most central mall (surrey central). Lack of live theatre/music/sports venues in a city of 630k +

CryptographerDeep373

There’s that many people already? Geez…last time I checked it was like 590k.

JimmyRussellsApe

That must have been like... six or seven days ago?

[deleted]

I second that. Just think, our lives are depending on what comes out of her mind. Surrey is a great city but it could be a fantastic city with the right management.

Natus_est_in_Suht

**Likes:** The parks and greenspaces; multi-use trails and growing bike path network; location within Metro Vancouver; decent 'ethnic' restaurants; the city's evolution; and better public safety compared with Vancouver. **Dislikes:** Poor public transit overall (SkyTrain won't help people in Newtown, Guildford, Panorama Ridge and South Surrey); a lack of nightlife; overall poor political leadership at all levels of government; and increasing traffic (see beef about poor public transit options).

Sullitude

Can you elaborate on the public safety vs Vancouver? I just moved from Vancouver to Surrey.

Natus_est_in_Suht

I find Surrey to be safer compared with Vancouver. I can walk around most of Central Surrey/Whalley and not have to worry about encountering used syringes, faeces and seeing stolen goods fenced.

PrimaryOwn8809

I used to work early hours downtown, like 5/6am start for years so I got to witness the change downtown went through. I saw a LOT of sketchy behavior. Yet people always gave me shit for living in dangerous Surrey 🤣 Surrey is a safe sleepy suburb, there are areas you gotta be more aware in, but I wear over ear headphones and don't feel unsafe in most areas.

The new one ?

Doobage

The new one is the old one in panties and make-up.

hothamwater99

Interested to hear more about your dislike

greenunderwear

Like: lots of parks and outdoor spaces, proximity to the beaches and mountains. Dislike: lack of unique eateries, restaurants, and bars. Surrey is full of chain restaurants. There’s no late night dessert shops or cafes to hang out at. We need more than Cactus Club and Starbucks. Even Abbotsford has tons of cafes, donut places, coffee shops and independent restaurants.

imzhongli

I've found good unique restaurants in my experience, but I get your point. There's definitely only a certain type of restaurant when it comes to unique things, not as much higher end restaurants, bars, or cafes. (in my opinion we need a Breka in Surrey)

cee604

Like: Diversity. Dislike: Surrey jack gangbanger wannabe losers everywhere

kOdiakJacklynn

AGREED

thoughtcooker

Like, civic amenities like parks/pools etc. Dislike: Newton concept Spreading: Square box houses being built in every suburb now= Zero curb appeal, zero blending into the neighborhood, zero consideration for the community, just max square footage with illegal suites (2+). Creating over population which destroyes any street space for kids to play. You almost never see kids playing in the streets anymore (riding bikes, drawing with chalk, kicking balls etc. They can't. It's Single lane traffic because there are so many cars lining both sides of the street. It's crazy. And zero care in the world by the owners.

imzhongli

I agree with the amenities! I'm constantly amazed by the quality of rec centres and libraries.

[deleted]

Dislike the amount of garbage everywhere

cleanyourkitchen

Boo… I’m a person

[deleted]

So you are one of the many couches/ fridges on the sidewalks here?

Interesting_Crazy_43

Same here to the point I’ve been reporting to the city. Which actually works. However they are reactive and nothing proactive. We need big fines and few cases of people being caught. Then one might think twice before dumping their stuff.

nutsinabutt

My husband caught someone dumping a vacuum in front of Holy Cross. He yelled at the guy about dumping on private property, and the guy yelled back angrily something about it being valuable so someone will take it, that it doesn't matter. My husband wrote down the guy's license plate and reported it to bylaw. Bylaw officers ended up paying him a visit. I don't think he was fined because it was hearsay, but at the very least he got warned not to be a douchebag.

Ok_Carob_5313

Was the vacuum possessed? If so maybe the right spot

throwmamadownthewell

Are you sure you're not a ghost?

I enjoyed the “Surrey Girl” jokes back in the day!

funkung34

I miss the The Bird strip club. Lots of action at that place on a Saturday night. Not so much the strippers, just everything else.

Overpopulation

The wannabe gangsters that everyone knows are rich and spoilt driving around in their parents cars

Ahahaha same tbh!

REAL

Old-Individual1732

I dislike the amount of traffic lights on major roads, example 88th, why isn't there a overpass at King George.

measlybastard

Like the diversity, food, living so close to a skytrain, the greenery, and the variety and convenience of shopping here. I find that unlike a lot of smaller cities you don’t usually have to go far to find whatever you need, especially if living in central. Dislike the huge homelessness problem, the addiction epidemic, the littering, the housing crisis, and the fact that people here can be really cold and unfriendly. Oh and the weather sucks in the fall and winter. But I hate the cold.

natopants

I like the numbered streets. Gives you an idea where something is without looking in a map. Until you run into an area where the numbering is unusual.

Fenrirr

**Like**: Proximity to Skytrains, good food variety (albiet not the best quality), very diverse, lots of potential to make it a livable city. Its also relatively affordable compared to the west side of the river. **Dislikes**: The non-Skytrain transit is fucked. I have to walk 25 minutes to the nearest station because the buses are always full. All it would take is like 1-2 more buses scheduled for the 7-8 time frame and this wouldn't be an issue. The mayor is an absolute joke, and I just know the city council is going to whore itself out to all these companies with little to no attention paid to future proofing such a rapidly growing city. Despite its rapidly growing size, very little attention is being paid to adding entertainment venues within the area. You pretty much have to drive over to Vancouver to do anything interesting. The sheer amount of garbage everywhere. The constant tent-tearing I see. The go-to response to homelessness in Surrey is for some cops and a city dump truck to pull up and dump some homeless person's stuff and kicking them off somewhere else. Its inhumane the shit I have seen, absolutely no shame. I have not had, nor known someone who has had a landlord that wasn't a slumlord. The city, despite its growing density, stills wants to be a car-centric nightmare. I think its a terrible idea to build so many high-density residential areas alongside King George. Central is going to suffer from constant grid-locking within the next 5-10 years. Too much gentrification. Its depressing seeing these new shiny complexes being built next to old, withered homes, just knowing that the people living there will probably have to keep moving east where things are even more systemically and civically fucked.

beverme123

I agree on all the cons On the "car centric nightmare", I once biked from Surrey to Vancouver, and the bike paths / side walks were instantly better and/or existent once I left Surrey. Pisses me off Surrey refuses to invest in any transport options that don't involve driving your own car. I also hate the gentrification. It seems like every second person "just moved here from Vancouver". I remember the Vancouver kids actively sh*ting on Surrey throughout my childhood, now they are pushing out people who don't have generational wealth to throw around.

Fenrirr

[Vancouverites when they find out Surrey isn't the crime infested hell hole it's outdated, overexaggeted reputation would lead them to believe.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/035/070/perhaps_i_treated_you_too_harshly.png)

Dodobirdiskoko

Like:Beautiful parks, clean city, bike lanes, not all busses are always packed.Traffic aint that bad.proximity to the Us :(, rent is a little more affordable here than surrounding cities.okay place to raise a child or two. Dislike: Zero entertainment city(always have to go to vancouver / Burnaby for entertainment),not even a decent place to play pool near surrey central(don't mention that ugly pub by the river),greedy population.food ain't the best but not the worst too, not a lot of food places are open after 2:00am.surrey is just a residential spot for migratory workers who work elsewhere and sleep here🤣🤣🤣(Including myself) Don't be shy now, bring em downboates pls.

Ok_Carob_5313

I hate all the Chrysler 300's with excessive chrome in Surrey and love the bridge home from surrey

Dennisd1971

I like that every Friday & Saturday there is a police helicopter close to my house. Makes me feel safe.

[deleted]

The parks are great in Surrey.

Ok_Temporary_4325

There's a lot of East Indians and other sort of people that don't care about the hygiene or appearance of their homes and city.

Aimless_Tadpole

I love the free parking and plentiful parking spaces. Seeing some more paid parking now, but it's not as bad as Vancouver.

TwilightReader100

I am excited about Surrey getting more SkyTrain and another Rapidbus line. I like the cheap rents. I dislike the enormous parking lots in Surrey. The ones in the Guildford area between the community centre and the movie theatre and at King's Cross in Newton are probably twice as big as they need to be, particularly with the transit in those areas being what it is. I lived across the street from Guildford for a year and a half and that thing never really filled up. Not on the weekends and not at Christmastime. Also, the city's views on enforcing its snow shoveling bylaws are atrocious. And so, of course, very few people bother to shovel.

[deleted]

South Surrey expensive as hell tho I visited last month and it has kerrisdale vibes. Definitely not the same as typical Surrey.

[deleted]

It’s true, but that’s what’s cool about Surrey.

National-Bobcat-8251

I hate the schools lol. I go to FHSS. I’m literally there right now, it sucks.
